The Sorrow of Peonies

I've been in Luoyang for many days now, and I've long heard of the city's renowned peonies. Today, I finally had the chance to visit. However, when I arrived at the peony garden, I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. The ground was covered with withered petals, like willows swaying in the breeze, mingled with raindrops; only the green leaves still exuded the vitality of spring. It seems I came at the wrong time, which is quite a regret.
According to historical records, peonies were introduced to the Central Plains during the Wei and Jin dynasties, developed during the Sui dynasty, flourished during the Tang dynasty, and reached their peak during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong. They were first planted in Heze and later cultivated in Luoyang, but it seems the connection between peonies and Luoyang is greater than that of Heze. The peonies' fame is largely attributed to the Tang dynasty, and it has a significant connection with Empress Wu Zetian. Legend has it that Empress Wu Zetian once wanted to visit the Imperial Garden, so she issued a special decree: "Tomorrow I will visit the Imperial Garden; urgently inform spring! The flowers must bloom overnight, lest the morning breeze blow them away." It was the dead of winter, and faced with Empress Wu Zetian's rather domineering decree, the "Fairy of a Hundred Flowers" obeyed and quickly prepared. The next day, when Empress Wu Zetian toured the garden, she saw that all the flowers were in full bloom, except for one flowerbed where no flowers were blooming. Upon inquiry, she learned that the peony had disobeyed her orders. Enraged, Wu Zetian ordered the flowers and trees to be burned and banished the peony from Chang'an to Luoyang. Surprisingly, these charred branches blossomed with vibrant flowers, and the flower fairies were filled with admiration, thus honoring the peony as the "Queen of Flowers." The "Charred Bone Peony" got its name from this, which is today's "Luoyang Red."
It is said that some have suggested making the peony China's national flower, but I believe that the peony is too opulent, giving a sense of extravagance. Our nation is one that lacks a sense of crisis; wouldn't this lead us to a feeling of extravagance, like "treating Hangzhou as Bianzhou"? In that case, the peony would be greatly disgraced. I don't have much knowledge about flowers. The ancients wrote poems about plum blossoms to express their will, chrysanthemums to express their purity, and lotuses to express their elegance. Few wrote about peonies, which is perhaps a kind of tragedy for the peony.
Leaving the Shenzhou Peony Garden, I couldn't help but feel a little lost. Although life is made more perfect by its regrets, it's best to have as few regrets as possible.
