January 24th, Lunar New Year's Eve

This morning, I was woken by that familiar ringing of the phone. I answered Dingding's call while still half asleep. She's currently in quarantine at the railway vocational training base, having her temperature checked twice a day, and her meals delivered to her dormitory by the canteen… She said on the phone that her cousin's group should also arrive for quarantine this afternoon—what a mess! What a holiday!
After hanging up with Dingding, I called my mom and video-chatted with my child. They're both doing well, which at least gave me some comfort.
Perhaps that's just life.
After getting up, I saw my sister-in-law sitting on the sofa in the living room, her eyes red. She must have been crying sometime during the day. Ever since I told her about these changes last night, she's been crying non-stop. She tried to call her cousin, but he couldn't get through. I thought it wouldn't be good for her to go home alone in her condition, so with Dingding's permission, I let her sleep in her daughter's room.
I told my sister-in-law that Dingding had called and that her cousin was doing well. He said his group would arrive at the vocational training base for unified quarantine around noon, and the siblings would be together, so she shouldn't worry. My sister-in-law nodded. It turned out she had been talking to her cousin since early morning. Yesterday, his car came from the west, passing through many tunnels, so the cell phone signal was consistently poor. He had told her about this and agreed to spend New Year's Eve at my house before going back to her parents' home, until he was released from quarantine and came to pick her up.
Since it was New Year's, even though it was just the two of us, we decided to cook something, at least some dumplings. My sister-in-law is about 165cm tall and weighs less than 100 pounds; she doesn't usually eat much meat. Since we had meat filling at home, we decided to go out and buy some mushrooms and wood ear fungus to make some vegetarian dumplings.
The streets were still quite lively; it seemed our area wasn't too affected by the epidemic. There were vendors selling Spring Festival couplets along the roadside, a vibrant red. Although there were no firecrackers, the festive atmosphere was still palpable. But when we passed the pharmacy, there were long lines; without asking, they were definitely buying disinfectant and masks.
Back home, we both got busy. I told my sister-in-law that I never imagined we'd be spending Chinese New Year under the same roof. As soon as the words left my mouth, I realized how impolite I'd been, and the seemingly peaceful atmosphere had become somewhat ambiguous.
My sister-in-law watched me while kneading dough, her face expressionless. It made me quite awkward. Just then, her WeChat video call came in!
It was my cousin!
