Rainy Night Butcher

Sixteen years ago, taxi driver Lam Kwok-wan was involved in a horrific case of dismembering and raping multiple women. The details are as follows:

At 4:00 AM on February 3, 1982, a light drizzle was falling. The nightlife in Tsim Sha Tsui was winding down, but the neon signs of shops around the Miramar Hotel remained brightly lit, as if hoping to linger a little longer.

A row of night taxis waited for departing passengers to return home.

Raindrops pattered on the windshields, reflecting the crimson neon lights like drops of blood.

The water wipers on the taxis, like a murderer erasing evidence, quickly wiped away the "blood" before anyone could see it clearly.

Twenty-seven-year-old Chan Fung-lan, the manager of the Tai Wah Ballroom, emerged from a nightclub at the intersection of Carnarvon Road and Kimberley Road.

Chen Fenglan, who had frequented brothels since her teens, was having a wild night with her two "sisters" tonight, drinking heartily. How many days of pleasure could one have in life? What would the future hold? Who could predict? Right now, she had wealthy patrons and enough money to drink fine wine like water. The ugly reality of laughing at poverty but not at prostitution—hadn't she known all these years?

Staggering, the three women laughed loudly and huddled together, but no one paid them much attention. In this decadent district, as dawn approached, three heavily made-up women walked drunkenly through the streets, flirting with each other. Everyone knew who they were.

Partly sober, Chen Fenglan told her two sisters, who were about as drunk as her, that she didn't need them to see her off, as she could find a taxi near the Miramar Hotel to get home.

She then staggered off down her own path—a path leading to her death.

Despite her barely perceptible drunken state, Chen Fenglan hadn't gone astray on the familiar route she took every morning. However, when she reached the taxi queue near the Miramar Hotel, three taxi drivers refused to take her. No one knew if she would become completely intoxicated upon boarding, unable to even state her destination, or if she could, no one could guarantee she would know how to pay and get out. But

there are always exceptions. While the first three taxis in the queue refused her, the fourth driver let her open the door and sit down next to him.

Chen Fenglan could state her destination, but no one knew why she, whose home was in Yau Ma Tei, asked the driver to go to Kwun Tong.

The driver ignored all this and quickly drove towards Kwun Tong in the rain.

Thus began the most sensational "Rainy Night Butcher Case" in Hong Kong's over 100-year history. Chen Fenglan became the first victim, and the 28-year-old driver, Lin Guoyun, discovered he had a killing addiction after this incident.

When Lam Kwok-wan drove Chan Fung-lan to a roundabout in Kwun Tong, Chan Fung-lan suddenly felt the effects of alcohol. She instinctively sat up straight, stuck her head out of the car, and vomited violently. Lam Kwok-wan quickly pulled her back into the car and asked her where she wanted to go in Kwun Tong

. Reeking of alcohol, Chan Fung-lan then asked Lam Kwok-wan to take her to Ngau Chi Wan.

What could a taxi driver do with such an intoxicated passenger? Take her to the police station? That would only create more trouble. Push her out of the car? He'd lose all his money. He had no choice but to take her to Ngau Chi Wan and see what she did.

When they arrived at the Ngau Chi Wan fire station, Chan Fung-lan was woken up. She was asked where she wanted to get out. She slightly opened her drunken eyes and mumbled that she wanted to go back to Austin Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.

This was infuriating.

Lam Kwok-wan remained silent, driving along the quiet road, turning, taking detours, and then stopping the car.

But this wasn't the brightly lit Tsim Sha Tsui, but the dimly lit, quiet roadside in front of No. 4 Kwai Chung, To Kwa Wan.

Chan Fung-lan had no idea where she was; along the way, she only occasionally mumbled incomprehensible drunken ramblings.

The car stopped, but she remained fast asleep, unaware that Lam Kwok-wan had gotten out.

Lam Kwok-wan, having gotten out, entered the On Hing Building. Passing the brightly lit management office, he saw no administrator, but the elevator door was open. He went inside, pressed the button for the second floor. Although he didn't recognize Chan Fung-lan in the car, he felt an immense hatred for her. Was it because Chan Fung-lan had arranged for him to drive his taxi around so recklessly? Was it because Chan Fung-lan's vomiting made him feel nauseous? He didn't even know.

The elevator stopped on the second floor. He took out his key and opened the front door.

It was nearly five in the morning, and his family was enjoying their deepest sleep before dawn. No one knew he had returned. He took an electric cord, quietly closed the door, took the elevator down to the ground floor, and then got back into a taxi.

Chen Fenglan didn't wake up. She leaned her head against the car door glass, completely unguarded. No one else was around at the taxi stand. Lin Guoyun stared at the sleeping Chen Fenglan, his hands twirling the ends of the electrical wire, pulling hard to test its strength to strangle the woman he loathed.

He had initially considered using a knife, but that method was too cruel and would soil the car, so he decided the wire was more ideal.

Lin Guoyun wrapped the wire around Chen Fenglan's neck, checked its length, and quickly glanced around the front and back of the car. Seeing no one, he suddenly tightened the wire, pulling Chen Fenglan's body down.

Aside from instinctively shifting her limbs slightly as she fell, Chen Fenglan offered no resistance. She was too drunk to even feel the urge to resist. Her body went limp, and she fell silent.

Lin Guoyun half-carried, half-supported the lifeless Chen Fenglan, and before anyone could see from the management office, he carried her body into the elevator and back to his room at home.

He opened the door and found his younger brother, sleeping in the upper bunk, still asleep. He carefully placed the body under his own bed, concealing it slightly.

He wasn't worried about his brother discovering the secret, as they had an agreement not to touch each other's things, an agreement his brother had always upheld.

He was even less worried about his father, sister, and brother-in-law finding out, because their rooms were separated by a large partition; they wouldn't hear anything, and rarely would they enter his room.

Once everything was settled, Lin Guoyun returned to his car and quickly drove to Mei Foo, handing the car back to the day-shift driver.

The day-shift driver took the taxi as usual, finding nothing amiss. He noticed nothing unusual in Lin Guoyun's expression or speech, as he rarely spoke to anyone.

In fact, Lam Kwok-wan wouldn't show any unusual behavior, because he felt no guilt whatsoever about what had just happened. He had simply removed something he loathed, and felt a strange sense of pleasure.

After the night watch, Lam Kwok-wan returned home as usual. The people in the house had just gotten up and hadn't gone out yet, but as usual, they didn't pay any special attention to him.

He went back to his room, lay on the bed, closed his eyes, and listened to the sounds outside.

A naked body, at his mercy, was presented before him. Lam Kwok-wan carefully examined it, considering how to position it so that he could take a picture of genitals like those in a foreign nude magazine.
