The Heroines of Water Margin - Hu Sanniang

Anyone who has read *Water Margin* knows the story of "Song Jiang's Three Attacks on the Zhu Family Village," and naturally, they also know that there was a female general at Liangshan Marsh named Hu Sanniang, nicknamed "One-Zhang-Qing" (meaning "One-Zhang Green"). Everyone knows she was beautiful and highly skilled in martial arts, but few know the reasons behind her skill or why she was called "One-Zhang-Qing."

In the past, martial artists traveling the world knew there were three types of people to avoid: monks, children, and women. Why? Monks often practiced magic, which ordinary people couldn't withstand; children and women were weaker, their physical strength no match for adult men. Yet, how did they manage to roam the world? Because they possessed extraordinary skills, such as using poison or hidden weapons. Hu Sanniang was skilled in hidden weapons. In terms of martial arts, among the three female generals, she couldn't compare to Sun Erniang, let alone other male heroes. If Wang Ying hadn't taken a liking to her and insisted on capturing her alive, Hu Sanniang might not have been able to capture him.

So what were Hu Sanniang's famous hidden weapons? She had three. First, there was the red velvet lasso, covered in iron hooks; once caught, it was impossible to remove. Second, there were throwing darts. Most people know these two, but few know the last one, which is the origin of her nickname, "One-Zhang-Green." It turns out that Hu Sanniang had something extraordinary about her: she had incredibly long hair. While most people's hair, even at its best, only reaches their knees, Hu Sanniang's hair was twelve feet long, hence the name "One-Zhang-Green." With this beautiful hair, Hu Sanniang mastered a unique skill. She braided her long hair into a large braid, concealing a willow-leaf steel dart within the loose ends. In combat, she would suddenly toss her head, whipping her braid up and sweeping it towards her opponent's vital points. Most people, unaware of this, wouldn't be able to dodge and thus fell victim to her attack.

But ultimately, these hidden weapons are, after all, an external skill, so they must be concealed. Once revealed, they become ineffective. If Hu Sanniang had only practiced these hidden weapons for self-defense, that would have been fine. But once she became a general and went to the battlefield, all her skills had to be used, and naturally, there were no secrets left to keep. If the enemy was prepared, the power would be much less. That's how Hu Sanniang lost her life.

Now, let's talk about Song Jiang's campaign against Fang La. The previous battles need not be detailed. Both sides were quite powerful rebel armies, and the fighting naturally resulted in mutual destruction. Although Song Jiang still had the advantage, he also suffered heavy losses and was in a sorry state. When they reached Wulong Ridge, the decisive battleground between the Fang and Song armies, the fighting became even more intense. Just when the battle was at a stalemate, a scout reported that Fang La's general, Fang Mian, was leading troops from Xianghuan to attack the Song army's flank. Song Jiang hurriedly dispatched the Dwarf Tiger Wang Ying and his wife to lead troops to meet the enemy.

As the art of war says, "Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will never be defeated." Fang Mian was Fang La's younger brother and was considered the foremost hero in Fang La's rebel army. Apart from Lu Junyi, the Jade Kirin, no one among the Liangshan generals could rival him. How could Wang Ying, a debauched man, possibly withstand him? The reasons for this were twofold: first, when Fang La raised his army, he had no equal, so his son, Fang Tianding, was the one who led the sieges and battles, while Fang Mian was kept in the background, and few knew he was the true leader of Fang La's army; second, the battle at Wulong Ridge was intense, and the battle lines were stretched thin. Lu Junyi and the Five Tiger Generals were each holding their own front and couldn't spare any troops, so they had to send Wang Ying and his wife from the reserves to fight Fang Mian.

Wang Ying's martial arts skills were mediocre, but he was arrogant and eager for glory. Upon arriving at the front, he charged into battle without considering the consequences, but his skills were nowhere near Fang Mian's, and he was killed in a single exchange. Hu Sanniang, nicknamed "One-Zhang-Qing," was not a careless person. Knowing Fang Mian's prowess, she should have formed a defensive formation early on, using arrows to block key routes and prevent Fang Mian from reinforcing Wulong Ridge. However, with Wang Ying's death, she lost her composure, only thinking of avenging her husband, completely forgetting that her martial arts skills were only about equal to Wang Ying's. She hastily spurred her horse into battle, wielding twin swords to fight Fang Mian.

Fang Mian, a man of wine and women, saw the beauty of "One-Zhang-Qing" and decided to capture her alive. So, even when their horses clashed, Fang Mian deliberately forwent any opportunity to kill his opponent, focusing solely on capturing her. Hu Sanniang, being the shrewd woman she was, could easily see through this. In fact, Hu Sanniang had always been known for her beauty, which prevented her opponents from killing her, thus giving her opportunities to use hidden weapons.

Seeing Fang Mian's ferocity and realizing she was no match, "One-Zhang-Qing" feigned a strike, turned her horse, and rode away, shouting coquettishly, "Fang Mian, you are quite formidable! I'm leaving, don't come after me!" The horse beneath her wouldn't actually move. Fang Mian thought to himself, "You want to use hidden weapons? I know that all too well. Watch me capture you!" He then gave chase. Seeing that the pursuer was closing in, Hu Sanniang held both knives on her Victory Hook, took out three steel darts from her left pouch, and took out a lasso in her right hand. With a twist of her slender waist, she shouted, "Take this!" The three darts in her left hand went first, two aimed at the eye, and one aimed straight for the throat—truly formidable.

But Fang Mian didn't move, his head didn't shake, and he parried with his broadsword: "Blow!" All three darts were knocked to the ground. At this moment, Hu Sanniang's lasso in her right hand arrived. The lasso was made of red velvet rope, with a loop at one end to hold the wrist, and the other end forming a slipknot that flew up and caught the person. It had a dozen or so barbed steel hooks on it; once the lasso was pulled, the steel hooks would snag on the clothing, armor, and flesh, making it impossible to remove. The lasso and steel dart were thrown one after the other, with few failures, but they were useless against Fang Mian. He simply swung his broadsword, threaded it through the lasso, and with a flick, the lasso became completely entangled in the hilt of the sword. He then pulled it towards his chest. Hu Sanniang, a woman, was no match for Fang Mian in terms of strength. The other end of the lasso was around her wrist, and she couldn't loosen it in time. She was pulled to the side and almost fell off her horse. She grabbed the saddle with both hands and clenched her mount tightly, trying to use the horse's strength to stabilize herself. While trying to retrieve the lasso, she also wanted to use her life-saving hidden weapon—the [One-Zhang-Green Hair Dart].

Fang Mian caught the "One-Zhang-Green" lasso, urging his mount to catch up while hanging up his sword. He then swung the lasso around a few times, still about twelve feet away from Hu Sanniang. Hu Sanniang, having anticipated this, tossed her head, and a long braid, like a monstrous python, swept towards Fang Mian's throat. Under normal circumstances, people wouldn't think this was a hidden weapon and wouldn't pay attention. But Hu Sanniang was famous for her darts, so how could anyone not be on guard? Those

with less skill might be too slow to dodge, but Fang Mian, a hero, naturally wouldn't fall for it. Seeing the hair brush against him, he leaned back, dodging the attack, and freed one hand to grab the braid.

This time, Hu Sanniang was in trouble. Once the braid was grabbed, her head was controlled, and the lasso, in her hand, controlled her right hand, forcing her to hold on tightly to the saddle, because if she let go, she would be pulled off the horse. Normally, with the Liangshan heroes providing support, they could rush to her rescue on horseback. But now, with no one to rely on, she felt both fear and despair. Fang Mian rode up to her, still tightly gripping the lasso to prevent Hu Sanniang from drawing her knife. He loosened his grip on the braid slightly, gave it a shake, and wrapped it around Hu Sanniang's neck before pulling. Hu Sanniang felt a sudden tightness around her neck and immediately felt suffocated. Her vision blurred, and her grip loosened, but Fang Mian, who had already reached her side, grabbed her around the waist, pulled her onto the horse, and dragged her away. It didn't look like capturing a general on the battlefield; it was more like a bride snatching on the grasslands.

With their commander dead and captured, before Fang Mian could even lead his troops to attack, the Song army scattered and disappeared without a trace.

Fang Mian pressed Hu Sanniang face down on the horse's back, then kicked his own feet out of the stirrups.

He used one leg to pin down Hu Sanniang's legs and the other to pin down her neck, forcing her to bend over and cling tightly to the horse's body. He then forcefully pulled her hands behind her back and placed them on her buttocks, binding her tightly with her lasso. He then released one of his legs, reached out and grabbed her narrow, bound feet, and tied the beautiful female general upside down with a rope. Only then did he put the stirrups back on and lead his army back to camp.

Upon arriving at the camp, Fang Mian ordered Hu Sanniang to be put in a prison cart and sent back to Xianghuan City. He then started a fire to cook, preparing to go to Wulong Ridge to reinforce it. However, a scout reported that Wulong Ridge had already fallen to Song Jiang, making Fang Mian's rescue pointless. He hurriedly led his army back to Xianghuan. While sending messengers to Fang La to report the victory over Wang Ying and the capture of Hu Sanniang,

Fang Mian awaited Fang La's further orders. Soon after, Fang La's order arrived, stating that Xianghuan was a crucial strategic location and could not be lost. He ordered Fang Mian to defend Xianghuan and execute Hu Sanniang on the spot to avenge the fallen soldiers.

As mentioned before, Fang Mian, like Wang Ying, was no saint. He had long harbored ill intentions upon seeing Hu Sanniang's beauty. Moreover, Liangshan and Fang La had once been fellow outlaws, yet Fang Mian had aided the court in harming his comrades—a practice most unacceptable in the martial world. Therefore, whatever means of revenge he used would not invite criticism.

Fang Mian ordered Hu Sanniang to be brought from prison and immediately brought to the tent. Although captured, Hu Sanniang possessed a naturally heroic nature; bound hand and foot, she stood upright and refused to kneel. Fang Mian was not angry with her, for he had not brought her for interrogation, but for execution.

【Yi Zhang Qing, you've been captured by me today. Do you submit or not?】

【It's just that my skills are inferior. Do as you please.】

【Do as you please? Fine. I've long heard of Yi Zhang Qing's beauty, enough to shame the moon and flowers. Seeing her today, I can attest to it. My Emperor has already decreed that you be torn to pieces, but before the execution, I'd like to properly enjoy this world-renowned Yi Zhang Qing.】

【Bah! You lecherous scoundrel, how dare you!】

【Now that you're in my hands, what wouldn't you dare?】

【Lecherous scoundrel, don't even think about it! I, Yi Zhang Qing, swear to die rather than be dishonored.】
