Before Chapter Two: The Original Intention of Rewriting the Lin Chong Chapter of Water Margin

This article aims to unravel a "hidden plot" in Water Margin.

Water Margin is another masterpiece by Luo Guanzhong after Romance of the Three Kingdoms (I have always believed that the original author was not Shi Shi,
but Luo Guanzhong). It contains many allusions to romantic relationships, the most famous being Pan Jinlian and Ximen Qing,
Yan Poxi and Zhang Wenyuan, Pan Qiaoyun and Pei Ruhai, and Li Shishi and Yan Qing. Behind almost every hero is
a story of internal strife. From this, we can infer that in Luo Guanzhong's eyes, women have always been the source
of trouble and chaos. Those who do not associate with women are heroes, while those who associate with women are villains.

Even in *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*,
this meaning is subtly revealed in the characters of Diao Chan, Zou Shi, and Xiao Qiao ("To embrace the two Qiaos in the southeast, to enjoy them day and night"). However, looking at *Water Margin*, there seems to be an exception:
Lin Chong's wife. Logically, the author should have lavishly praised such an exception, but in the original text, apart from
a few brief descriptions, there seems to be no praise for Lin's wife, not even her full name is given to
posterity, leaving one puzzled.

In fact, regarding Lin's wife herself, the original text seems to have intentionally planted many mysteries.

The first mystery is the scene at the Five Sacred Mountains Tower where Gao Yanei harasses Lin's wife. This scene comes and goes quickly
; before the reader can understand what happened, it's over, as if the author only wanted the reader to know that Lin's
wife was harassed by Gao Yanei. But what actually happened during the time Jin'er delivered the message?

The original text reads: "Lin Chong bid farewell to Zhishen, hurriedly leaped over the broken wall, and rushed with Jin'er to the Yue Temple;
when they reached the Five Sacred Mountains Tower..." Adding the time it took Jin'er to deliver the message, it must have been quite a while. However, when Lin Chong arrived, Gao Yanei
's tone was as if he had just spoken his first words to Lin's wife: "Don't go, let me talk to you."
Lin's wife blushed and said, "In this peaceful world, what kind of logic is this, to tease a good man!" Lin's wife's words are very intriguing
...

because "Don't go, let me talk to you" doesn't imply any teasing, while "tease a good man"
clearly suggests that teasing had already occurred. As for how the teasing took place during that time, the author deliberately leaves it unwritten. Later,
after everything was settled, Lu Zhishen rushed over with his men. This shows that the vegetable garden was
not close to the Five Sacred Mountains Temple. This period was ample time for Gao Yanei to harass and tease her, and groping and touching were almost inevitable.

The second point of suspicion is that Lu Qian, the Marquis of Lu, agreed to help Gao Yanei obtain Lin Chong's wife. The author
glosses over this point: "The next day, after discussing the plan, Lu Qian readily agreed, having no other choice. As long as the young master
was happy, he didn't care about friendship." According to Fu An, Lu Qian and Lin Chong were best friends, practically brothers, but
even a close brother "quit readily agreed, having no other choice"—this friend betrayed
him too quickly. With such a despicable character, how could Lin Chong be best friends with Lu Qian? Is there a hidden story? How could Lu Qian have "no other choice"? We don't
know.

The third and most significant point of suspicion is the drama at the Lu residence.

The original text reads: Lin Chong came downstairs, left the inn, went into the alley to wash his hands, and turned back to exit the alley.
There he saw the maid Jin'er calling out, "My lord, I've been looking for you! Here you are!"

Lin Chong hurriedly asked, "What is it?"

Jin'er said, "My lord and Lu Qian went out, and less than half an hour later, a man rushed into our house in a panic
, saying to my wife, 'I am Lu Qian's neighbor. Your instructor and Lu Qian were drinking, and then the instructor
suddenly collapsed!' He told my wife to come quickly and see what was wrong. My wife heard this and immediately asked the neighbor, Wang Po, to watch the house. She and I
went with the man. We arrived at a house in the alley in front of the Grand Commandant's mansion. We went upstairs and saw some food and wine on the table, but
my lord was nowhere to be seen." Just as she was about to go downstairs, she saw the young man who had been making a scene at the Yue Temple the other day come out and say, "Lady, please sit for a moment,
your husband is here."

Jin'er hurriedly went downstairs, only to hear her wife shouting from upstairs, "Murder!" Therefore, I searched everywhere for my
husband but couldn't find him. Just then, I bumped into Mr. Zhang, the medicine seller, who said, "I passed by Fanlou and saw the instructor and someone go in to drink."
So I rushed here. Hurry, sir!"

Lin Chong, upon hearing this, was startled. Ignoring his maid Jin'er, he ran three steps at a time to Lu Qianhou's house; he rushed to
the top of the stairs, but the door was locked. He heard his wife shout, "In this peaceful world, how can you lock my good husband up here
!" Then he heard Gao Yanei say, "Lady, have pity on me! Even a heart of stone would be moved!"

Lin Chong, standing on the stairs, called out, "Sister-in-law! Open the door!" The woman, hearing her husband's voice, rushed to open
the door. Gao Yanei was startled, opened the window, and jumped over the wall to escape. Lin Chong went upstairs but couldn't find Gao Yanei.
He asked his wife, "Has this scoundrel defiled you?" His wife replied, "No." Lin Chong smashed Lu Qianhou's house to pieces
, then took his wife downstairs. When they went outside, they saw that all the neighbors' doors were closed. The maid Jin'er met them, and the three of them
went home together.

It was Jin'er again! Jin'er had already informed them last time; hadn't Gao Yanei learned his lesson?

"My lord, I've searched so hard for you! And here you are!"

Clearly, Jin'er had been looking for Lin Chong for a long time! As Jin'er hurriedly went downstairs, she heard her wife shout from upstairs,
"Murder!" This "Murder!" clearly indicates that the rape had already begun when Jin'er came downstairs, and it's very likely that
Gao Yanei was threatening Lin's wife with a knife, hence the "murder!"

"I searched the whole city for my husband but couldn't find him," this "whole city" indicates that Jin'er had
searched every corner of the capital! The largest city in the country! Therefore, Jin'er must have spent a very, very long time, at least no less than an
hour! Add to that the time it took for Wenren and Lin Chong to get to the Lu family, alas, it's likely the deed was already done!

When Lin Chong arrived at the Lu family, Lin's wife's initial shouts of "Murder!" changed to only hearing her cry:
"In this peaceful world, how can you imprison my good husband here!" The situation seemed to have changed from extremely serious to simply being
imprisoned here. During this long period, Gao Yanei had been abusing her from the beginning, so why did the two of them speak
as if nothing had happened?

Then, the author suddenly used the term "that woman"! You should know that in *Water Margin*, "that woman"...
The term of address is very disrespectful to married women, generally used to address women who have committed adultery.

Afterwards, Gao Yanei "opened the window and jumped over the wall," and "both neighbors closed their doors." Connecting this
to the earlier mention of "asking Wang Po, the neighbor, to watch over the house" (note the recurring mention of Wang Po), these scenes
bear a striking resemblance to the scene of Wu Dalang catching his wife in adultery!

Finally, Lin Chong asked, "Hasn't this scoundrel defiled you?" Why did Lin Chong ask this? It indicates that he also suspected
his wife of having lost her virginity, and the only proof that Lin Niangzi hadn't is her own statement, "No." This seems
rather weak.

The fourth point of doubt, see the original text: Lu Yuhou and Fu An came to the mansion to look at Yanei and saw that he looked unwell and
haggard. Lu Qian asked, "Why do you seem so listless, young master?" The young master replied, "To tell you the truth, I
've been unable to have my way with that Lin family man twice, and the shock he gave me has worsened my illness. I only have six months or three
months left, and my life is in danger!" The two men said, "Young master, please don't worry. We'll do our best to be with him
; unless he hangs himself, then we'll be fine."

Many people believe that the two failed attempts to have her prove that Lin Niangzi was not defiled, but in reality, failing to
have her also implies failing to win her heart. Moreover, what Gao Yanei told Lu Qian and Fu An
may not have been the truth. It's more likely that Gao Yanei had tasted the sweetness of success and was unwilling to stop there. If Lin Niangzi were truly
unwavering, Gao Yanei should have known about her strong-willed nature during the Lu family's violence.

Therefore, the subtext here is: "I want to be her husband forever!" This is
exactly the same idea as Ximen Qing's. Didn't Ximen Qing also tell Wang Po that he wanted to "completely marry" Pan Jinlian after he got her?

The fifth point of doubt is Lin Chong's divorce. Logically speaking, Lin Chong shouldn't have divorced his wife! This is clearly pushing his wife into the fire,
unless he had some suspicions about her.

Secondly, Lin's wife's reaction was a bit excessive. When she heard that Lin Chong wanted to divorce her, she "wailed and cried to the heavens." Why
didn't she "wailed and cried to the heavens" when Lin Chong was imprisoned and his life was in danger? Was her husband's life more important than being divorced
? It can be seen that Lin's wife was a person who cared a lot about her reputation, and it is not surprising that a person who cares a lot about her reputation would say, "Husband! I have never
done anything wrong, how can you divorce me?"

Lin Chong's reply is even more intriguing: "My wife, I mean well. I'm afraid we might both end up misunderstanding each other in the future, and I'll only hurt you."
Misunderstand each other in the future? With whom? Is it Lin's wife and Gao Yanei who are misunderstanding each other, or Lin's wife and Lin Chong? This
statement has a slightly sour tone. If it's with Gao Yanei, Lin Chong is jealous; if it's with himself,
it's a declaration to Lin's wife: I'll find someone else in the future, don't hold me back.

"Upon hearing this, the wife choked with emotion; upon seeing the letter, she burst into tears." She had initially been wailing, but
after hearing Lin Chong's words, she should have cried even harder, yet she only cried for a moment, seemingly tacitly agreeing to Lin Chong's words.

The one who truly and resolutely disagreed with Lin Chong divorcing his wife was Lin Chong's father-in-law, Instructor Zhang! But Instructor Zhang told Lin Chong,
"If you have anyone who can help, please send me letters frequently!" Lin Chong didn't even agree to this, and indeed, he never wrote
a letter afterward. It seemed he was determined to have no further connection with the Zhang family! This is unreasonable and incomprehensible. Only
after joining Chao Gai did he suddenly think of his wife in the capital, her fate uncertain, and asked Chao Gai to inquire.

Later, he only heard that "his wife had been forced into marriage by Grand Commandant Gao and hanged herself, and had been dead for half a year."
Whether she truly died after being "hanged" is questionable. If she did indeed "hang herself,"
shouldn't the author have praised such a virtuous woman throughout history? Why was the author so stingy with ink on Lin Chong's wife?

Therefore, there is much to write about regarding Gao Yanei and Lin Chong's wife. In fact, there are many other women in *Water Margin* who are worthy of being written about
. How did Hu Sanniang end up marrying Wang Ai Hu so inexplicably? Liangshan killed her entire family.
What was her relationship with Song Jiang, and why did she obey him so readily? I'll write about Song Jiang and Hu
Sanniang's story another time.

Actually, many romantic entanglements in *Water Margin* are similar, each featuring a weak or outwardly strong
but inwardly weak husband, such as Wu Da, Song Jiang, and Yang Xiong. Even more ridiculous, Emperor Huizong of Song was cuckolded
, showing Luo Guanzhong's strong infatuation with cuckoldry. Lin Chong was also weak and shouldn't be
an exception. Perhaps Luo Guanzhong was influenced by Shi Nai'an and abandoned his own desires for the sake of the plot.

Chapter Two: Zhang Ruoyun Seeks Official Position for Her Husband, Lu Mansion Offers Himself to Gao Yanei
It is said that
Gao Yanei, having gathered a group of idle men, was captivated by Lin Chong's wife after seeing her and being distracted by her. He was quite infatuated and unhappy. Returning to his mansion, he was puzzled, spending his days playing with Lin Chong's wife's underwear, finding it so fragrant and alluring
, his desire unbearable.

Two days later, many idle men came to serve him; seeing that Yanei was anxious and hadn't made any moves, they dispersed.

Among them was a henchman called "Dry Bird Head" Fu An, who understood Gao Yanei's intentions. He went alone to
the mansion to wait for him, finding Yanei sitting idly in the study.

Fu An approached and said, "Young Master, you look pale and listless lately; something must be bothering you."

Young Master Gao asked, "How do you know?"

Fu An replied, "I can guess right away."

Young Master Gao asked, "What do you think is bothering me?"

Fu An said, "You're thinking about those 'two trees.' How about that?" "

You guessed right," said the young master. "But there's no way to get her."

Fu An said, "What's so difficult about that! You're afraid Lin is a good man and won't dare to bully him. That's fine; he sees that he's under your command
and receives great favors, so how could he dare to offend the Grand Commandant? At best, he'll be exiled, at worst, his life will be taken. I've
thought of a plan that will allow you to get her."

Upon hearing this, the young master said, "I've seen many beautiful women, but for some reason, I only love her. I'm infatuated and depressed
. What advice do you have? If you can get her, I'll reward you handsomely."

Fu An said, "My trusted confidant, Lu Qian, is very close to Lin Chong. Tomorrow, you can hide in
the deep pavilion upstairs at Lu Qian's place, set out wine and food, and then have Lu Qian invite Lin Chong out for a
drink Wine. Xiao Xian then went to his house and told Lin Chong's wife, "Your husband, Instructor, was drinking with Lu Qian, and in a fit of anger, he collapsed."
"Upstairs, tell my wife to go see!" This lured her upstairs. Women are easily swayed; seeing such a charming young
man as the magistrate, and with a few sweet words to entice him, she couldn't resist. "What do you think of this plan, Xiao Xian?" The young master Gao exclaimed,
"Excellent plan! I'll personally go and summon Lu Yu Hou tonight to give you instructions."

It turned out that Lu Yu Hou's house was just in the alley next to Gao Taiwei's.

Immediately, Gao Yanei, along with Fu An, rushed to Lu's house. On the way, Gao Yanei suddenly asked Fu An, "I've long heard that the instructor of the 800,000 Imperial Guards
is exceptionally skilled in martial arts. I wonder what his personality is like. If he's hot-tempered, even if Lu Qian intervenes, it will be troublesome." Fu An
laughed, "How could a mere instructor possibly offend you, young master? I've also heard that although Leopard Head is skilled in martial arts,

a dog bites him, he'll ask who its master is before daring to cause trouble. What is there for you, young master, to fear?"

Gao Yanei sneered, "You're quite bold, comparing me to a dog." Fu An trembled with fear and slapped himself, saying,
"Young master, I would never dare, but it's true that there's such a saying in the court. Lin Chong is afraid of trouble and would never dare to offend you, young master."
Gao Yanei said, "That's for the best. For that young lady, I'm not afraid of anything."

As they spoke, the two arrived at the Lu family's residence, where they saw a dilapidated three-story courtyard with a pair of large "double
happiness" characters on the main gate. Gao Yanei asked, "This is Lu Qian's house? Why is it so dilapidated, yet they've put up 'double happiness' characters?"

Fu An replied, "Do you know why Lu Qian is the Grand Commandant's trusted confidant?
It's because he failed the martial arts examination two years ago and ended up destitute on the streets. Unexpectedly, the Grand Commandant took pity on him and took him under his wing. However, due to his humble origins, he hasn't yet received any important positions. He's
staying here temporarily, and he just got married three months ago, hence the 'double happiness' characters ." Gao Yanei

asked, "Why is he so close to that fellow Lin Chong?"

Fu An said, "He studied under Lin's father, Lin Tixia, and he and Lin Chong were fellow disciples since childhood. Lin Chong
followed in his father's footsteps and became an instructor, while Lu Qian could only rely on his own abilities to pass the martial arts examination. Because he lacked money and power, he
failed He was quite envious of Lin Chong. "There's something I need to tell you, sir,"

Lu Qian opened the door to welcome the guest, and was overwhelmed with gratitude to see Gao Yanei personally visiting. Over the years, although Lu
Qian followed Grand Commandant Gao, he rarely obeyed him and was very frustrated. Others thought he was just unappreciated and rarely visited him.
Seeing the young master's sudden arrival, Gao was somewhat at a loss for words and hurriedly bowed, saying, "Young master, you flatter me. What
brings you here in person?"

Gao sized up Lu Qian, noting his short stature, fair complexion, and lack of beard; he appeared to be in his thirties,
his face full of flattery. Gao thought, "This man is capable." He then said, "Are you Lu Yuhou?"

Lu Qian bowed deeply, saying, "Indeed, it is I."

Fu An said, "Young master, you have come today with important matters to discuss."

Lu Qian said, "Just give the order, young master. There's no need for such trouble. Please come inside and rest."

The three entered the second-floor reception hall. Lu Qian personally helped Gao to his seat. The playboy then said, "Today,
Fu An mentioned Yuhou's wedding. I was busy the other day and didn't have time to present a gift. I'm making up for it today, though it's late." He
then took out a five-tael gold ingot from his sleeve and handed it to Lu Qian.

Lu Qian exclaimed in surprise, "I absolutely dare not accept this! It's already a small favor that you, young master, have come to my humble abode
. How could I accept

such a generous gift?" Fu An replied, "You're too kind, sir. Young master treats money like dirt, and is known for his generosity. This magnanimity shows
his high regard for you. Surely you don't want to embarrass him?"

Lu Qian then accepted the gift and said, "I'll have my wife arrange a feast. Please rest for a moment, young master."

With that, he went into the inner hall on the third floor.

Inside, Lu Qian told his wife, Zhang Ruoyun, about Young Master Gao's personal visit. Seeing her husband's overjoyed
expression, Ruoyun blushed and said happily, "Look at you, just a couple of days ago you were lamenting your bad luck, but today,
with the young master's arrival, you're so happy! Go and entertain the guest; I'll go buy some fruit, vegetables, wine, and food." Lu Qian said,
"Before leaving, go and pay your respects to the young master; don't be impolite." Ruoyun smiled and said, "I understand."

Lu Qian went downstairs and quickly poured fragrant tea for the young master. Then Fu'an asked, "Does the officer know
why the young master has come today?"

Lu Qian bowed and said, "I was just about to ask you, Brother Fu'an, to explain."

Fu'an said, "Besides congratulating you, the young master has an important matter to discuss with you today, and he needs your help.
" " It's the young master's order, I really have no choice..." Just as he was about to continue, a woman with small, delicate feet
descended from the third-floor pavilion. Approaching, she gave a soft greeting and said in a sweet voice, "This humble woman is Zhang, I was unaware of your arrival, young master
, and apologize for my lateness."

Young Master Gao heard this nightingale-like voice, identical to that of Madam Lin. He felt his whole body go weak, as if he had drunk fine
wine. Looking up, he saw a stunningly beautiful woman standing before him.

This young lady was indeed born of the same mother as Madam Lin, bearing an eight or nine-tenths resemblance—truly a remarkable woman!
She had a rosy face and a slender figure, her long, black hair styled at her waist. Her slender waist was graceful, and her curvaceous figure and full
breasts were particularly eye-catching, her breasts exceptionally firm and high, exuding a fiery allure. Her alluring almond-shaped eyes
always held a faint, hazy quality, like pools of autumn water. Her delicate eyebrows and small, red lips were always slightly parted, a half-smile
playing on her lips. Her face was fair, her features exquisitely sculpted, radiant and captivating.

Xiangmei's hair was styled in a bun, adorned with a gold hairpin with a phoenix pendant, and below that, a jade hairpin carved
with a phoenix, both shimmering with gold and possessing the serene beauty of jade—truly irresistible. She dressed meticulously, wearing a
round-necked long gown with a pink base embroidered with numerous pink peach blossoms. The pale color and loose fit easily concealed
her mature and voluptuous figure.

Her fair face was flushed, exuding the unique charm of a young woman. Her eyes seemed to hold pools of autumn water, and
a faint smile always played at the corners of her lips. Her phoenix eyes, bright as stars,
reflected sunlight subtly in their black irises, captivating the soul. Her mouth, neither too large nor too small, was pink, delicate and elegant, revealing a
row of pearly white teeth.

Gao Yanei stared intently at this celestial beauty, momentarily mistaking her for Lin Niangzi herself, completely
mesmerized. He thought to himself, "Her sister is more beautiful than a celestial being, while I am simply a celestial being descended to earth!" In terms of
the difference between her and her sister, Zhang Ruoyun was only slightly shorter than Lin Chong's wife.

Lu Qian, seeing Gao Yanei's lustful eyes fixed on his wife, smiled slightly. His wife was a celestial beauty;
in the capital, besides her own sister, Zhang Ruozhen, the wife of his senior brother, she was undoubtedly

Gao Yanei waved his hand at Fu An. Fu An then recounted how Gao Yanei had met Madam Lin on the road, how Lin Chong had ruined
his plans, how he missed her so much and was determined to have her, and how he planned to have Lu Qian devise a scheme to lure Madam Lin into his trap

Lu Qian broke out in a cold sweat! He knew Gao Yanei's nickname was "Playboy," but he never expected him to have his eye
