In Hippocrates' view, sexual intercourse is much like brewing a cappuccino—semen is produced in the brain, flows through the ears into the spinal cord and waist, and is stored there. The friction of intercourse generates heat, churning the body fluids and forming foam.
Needless to say, semen is just those foamy components, like the milk foam on a cappuccino. He even believes that women also produce semen: "During intercourse, a woman's genitals are rubbed, and the uterus moves. I think the movement of the uterus causes a kind of itch that spreads pleasure and heat to other parts of the body."
So, during orgasm, which party experiences greater pleasure, the man or the woman? In Greek mythology, there's a story about a dispute between Zeus and his wife Hera. The reason was that both believed the other derived greater pleasure from sexual intercourse. Tiresis, who had been a woman for a time and then a man again, was summoned to Mount Olympus to judge. His answer was: the woman experiences approximately nine to ten times the pleasure of the man. This answer inevitably brings to mind a related bawdy joke: when picking your ear with your finger, is it more comfortable, your finger or your ear?
Why do women need to experience sexual orgasm?
Desmond Morris believed that women's ability to experience orgasm stemmed from human bipedalism. If a woman did not experience orgasm after sex, and thus lacked the resulting satisfaction and fatigue, and simply left immediately after intercourse, then semen would flow out of the vagina. This is because in bipedal women, the vagina points vertically downwards; while in quadrupedal animals, the vagina is horizontal. Therefore, female animals do not require orgasm.
This statement seems reasonable, but it is actually wrong. First, it has now been proven that after a man ejaculates, enough semen is sprayed directly onto the cervix, so even if the woman stands up immediately after intercourse, the conception rate will not be significantly reduced. Second, it has now been found that about half of female primates also experience sexual pleasure, and some can even have orgasms.
To explore the true reasons behind female orgasms, we might as well think in reverse and ask ourselves a question: If female orgasms are something useful, then why can't women have orgasms every time they have sex, just like men?
