Warmth Encourages - Chapter 40: Does This Matter?

Gu Nuanxin ran very fast, leaping over several steps at a time. She felt sad and heartbroken for either of the two people in the flower hall, no matter who was hurt or saddened.
She had just reached the bottom of the stairs and was about to run towards the flower hall when she tripped over the rolled-up carpet and fell hard to the ground. Her knees stung and burned, bringing tears to her eyes. Before she could even get up, Gu's father's furious roar echoed from the flower hall:
"The traitor! The traitor!..."
Then came another ear-piercing sound of shattering porcelain, followed by Gu's father's furious roar: "...How could you do such a thing...She's your sister..."
The sound came through the heavy, carved wooden door, a muffled sound, but some of the words were indistinct. Gu Nuanxin quickly got up and ran to the door, only to find that it had been locked from the inside.
She pressed her face against the door, trying to peek through the crack. The narrow crack was pitch black, with only a few rays of light occasionally filtering through, making it impossible to see clearly.
"...What kind of woman don't you want? Why do you have to seduce your sister? Have you thought about her future!" The voice was much clearer as he stood by the door.
Gu Nuanxin frowned. She couldn't hear what Gu Yihuai was saying, but from her father's words, it seemed that he was taking all the blame upon himself.
“…How could I have raised a son like you? Disobeying your father, committing adultery with your own sister…” Each of Gu’s father’s shouts was accompanied by a dull thud, like a stick pounding into a thick quilt.
Gu Nuan's heart skipped a beat. She pounded on the door and cried out, "Dad, my brother didn't tempt me... Please let me explain, it's not what you think..."
The two people inside must have heard what she said, because they suddenly fell silent.
A moment later, the door opened with a "snap," and Gu Yihuai was standing behind it, backlit, with blood seeping from his forehead.
“Brother…” Gu Nuanxin couldn’t help but tear up when she saw him. When had someone who was usually so gentle and refined ever been so disheveled?
“…Why are you crying? It’s okay, brother.” He reached out and gently wiped away her tears, patted the top of her head, and took her hand as he led her toward the stairs.
Gu Nuanxin turned around and looked back. Her father was standing in the flower hall, leaning on his cane and staring at the two of them with a gloomy expression. When he saw her looking over, he sighed deeply, turned around, and slowly walked back to the sofa.
Gu Nuanxin stopped and tugged at Gu Yihuai's hand, which was holding hers: "I'll go explain to my father."
Gu Yihuai turned to look at her and smiled gently: "No need, I've already said that." He then led her upstairs.
"...Why are you taking all the blame on yourself? It was clearly me..." Gu Nuanxin choked up. She was the one who seduced him first, the one who dragged him into this endless abyss, but now he was taking all the responsibility on her.
"Anuan, is this important?" He stopped and looked down at her, his eyes clear as a spring.
"It's important...it's very important..." Her eyes were full of tears, and she could understand why he did this.
Gu Yihuai had never disobeyed his father and had always been the Gu family's expectation and pride. Now that he had taken all the blame upon himself, not only would his father be more lenient towards her, but if their relationship were ever exposed, she would only be seen as a "victim" in the eyes of the world and would receive sympathy, while he would bear the infamy of seducing his younger sister and disregarding human ethics, and would be ridiculed and insulted by the world.
She didn't expect him to tell his father the truth, but at least they should share the burden. She never imagined he would decide to bear all of this alone...
“Anuan…” Gu Yihuai sighed and cupped her tear-stained face in his hands: “No matter how we started, or who started first, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that we’re together now, and that’s enough…” Actually, he loved her much longer than she knew it, and his desire for her had been there for a long time, so did it really matter who started first?
escape route
Gu Yihuai led her back to the room and had her sit on the edge of the bed while he went to the bathroom to find a clean towel. Her eyes were completely swollen, and she was still crying incessantly, no amount of comforting could soothe her. She had fallen to the ground earlier, and her hands were covered in dust, which she then smeared all over her face while crying, leaving her with streaks that made her look like a little kitten.
“…I can do it myself.” Gu Nuanxin choked back tears as she reached out to take the towel from Gu Yihuai’s hand. She didn’t want to do this, but she couldn’t stop the tears. She realized that she had been taking everything for granted. Her initial carelessness had made him bear the consequences.
"Don't move." He avoided her hand and carefully wiped the marks off her face. The cool towel he placed on her burning eyelids helped clear her mind.
She looked at Gu Yihuai before her. The wound on his forehead was still red, and the blood that had seeped out earlier had dried. His suit jacket was stained with tea, probably from when his father had hit him with a teacup in his anger. Despite his disheveled state, he was still bending down to carefully wipe her face.
Gu Nuanxin felt extremely distressed. She grabbed the towel from his hand and quickly wiped her face.
"Sit down quickly!" She stood up, pressed Gu Yihuai onto the bed, and ran to her cabinet to find some ointment. She used to be playful and often got hurt, so her father kept a first-aid kit in her room for emergencies. But after her rebirth, she became much more mature, and hadn't used the kit for a long time, so she couldn't find it for the time being.
Gu Yihuai sat on the edge of the bed, watching her rummage through the cabinet while muttering to herself. His mood, which had been low due to the argument with his father, improved considerably as she talked.
He had expected his father to react so strongly to this matter. After all, his father came from the late Qing Dynasty and valued social customs and etiquette highly. Even knowing that they were not related by blood, he would not allow the family to be tainted in the slightest. However, even though he was prepared, his father's angry words still saddened him.
Gu Yihuai watched Gu Nuanxin's retreating figure and pondered: If everything is unavoidable, then let her bear less pressure. She's too young, and he's always worried that she might want to get close to him because of her naivety. If she changes her mind one day, at least he'll have a way out.
Gu Nuanxin found the ointment, returned to the bedside, and reached out to help him take off his dirty coat. Gu Yihuai smiled and held her hand: "Just apply the ointment, I'll go upstairs and change in a bit."
She lowered her eyes. She had clearly heard the sound of sticks outside the flower hall, but now Gu Yihuai wouldn't let her see...
Did Daddy hit you just now?
"Hmm..." He smiled and pointed to his forehead: "Isn't this...?"
Gu Nuanxin knew perfectly well that he was avoiding the main point. The more he refused to talk about it and the less he wanted her to see it, the more worried she became.
"Let me see, okay? I promise I won't cry..."
The two stared at each other for a moment, but Gu Yihuai finally gave in to her increasingly reddening eyes. He sighed, raised his hand to unbutton his shirt, and while the white shirt underneath looked normal, Gu Nuanxin still gasped when his bare back was revealed.
Several faint bluish-purple marks were etched on his honey-colored skin, barely visible against his well-defined back. Although there was no bleeding, there was already some swelling. The raised areas were quite noticeable to the touch. How hard must he have been hit to leave these marks on his thick back muscles?
Gu Nuanxin remembered she couldn't cry, so she sniffled. She turned and went back to the bathroom to wash her hands, then found a clean handkerchief and returned to the bedside to clean his wounds. She comforted him like a child:
"It might hurt a little, just bear with it..." She took a dollop of ointment and gently applied it to his wound, breathing on it as she did so, afraid of hurting him.
Looking at her, Gu Yihuai's heart suddenly softened like a ball of cotton. He hooked his arms around her neck and lowered his head to cover her red lips with his own…
No matter what the future holds, as long as she loves him now and is willing to stay by his side, that's enough...
Several weeks have passed, and the atmosphere at home has become quite cold. Although Gu's father no longer bothers Gu Yihuai, he also ignores him. The most uncomfortable moments are at the dinner table. Gu's father doesn't want to talk to either of them, and Gu Yihuai doesn't want to speak either. Gu Nuanxin looks at this awkward atmosphere, wondering when it will end.
The unexpected turn of events occurred on a Monday morning a month later. Gu Yihuai was called early in the morning and rushed to the office before he even had time to eat breakfast.
Gu Nuanxin was a little puzzled, wondering what could be so urgent. She didn't see the article in the newspaper until the afternoon.
The author of the article was a writer who was somewhat well-known in the literary world. To Gu Nuanxin's surprise, the content of the article was actually a denunciation of Gu Yihuai!
Heartache
This article, published in Ta Kung Pao, was short but occupied a prominent section of the newspaper.
The article details Gu Yihuai's major political achievements since he entered politics and points out that the purpose of implementing these policies was to serve his personal interests.
The author cites examples of his encouragement of the development of private banks, stating that Gu Yihuai used his position as a central bank manager to develop private banks because he held shares in these private banks, and the development of private banks made it easier for him to amass wealth.
Gu Nuanxin read the article and felt both angry and amused. This person had no evidence whatsoever, yet he was spouting nonsense and slandering Gu Yihuai in such a well-known newspaper.
However, upon further reflection, he became worried. This article was full of flaws, yet it was published in Ta Kung Pao and even occupied a prominent position on the front page. It was impossible for a writer without connections to do this; there must have been someone behind him who instructed him.
This had never happened in her previous life, Gu Nuanxin frowned. Could it be because they were together that this happened? In other words, someone discovered they were together, but was unhappy about it and deliberately messed with Gu Yihuai.
Thinking about it, Gu Nuanxin broke out in a cold sweat. This person couldn't be her father. No matter how dissatisfied he was, he wouldn't intentionally hurt his own son. So who else besides her father knew about this?
Gu Nuanxin was restless all day until Gu Yihuai came home in the middle of the night and found her asleep in his bed.
He walked quietly to the bedside, sat on the edge of the bed, and looked down at her.
Even in her sleep, her brows were furrowed, and Gu Yihuai sighed. He knew she had been worried lately because of her father, but this wasn't something that could be resolved in a short time.
“…Brother?” Gu Nuanxin opened her eyes and saw Gu Yihuai sitting by the bed. The light above was too bright for her to adjust to, so she raised the back of her hand to shield her eyes and sat up.
Gu Yihuai turned slightly and pulled her into his arms: "Did I disturb you?" He shielded her eyes with his large hand, protecting her from the light.
Gu Nuanxin shook her head, wrapped her slender arms around his waist, and buried herself even deeper: "Is the matter resolved?"
Gu Yihuai glanced at the newspaper still spread out beside the bed and said softly, "It's nothing, don't worry..."
She was silent for a moment, then asked him somewhat nervously, "Who's behind this? Have you found out, brother?"
"It's probably just a difference of opinion, it's nothing to worry about." A dark glint flashed in Gu Yihuai's eyes, but he comforted her with his words.
It's true that political opponents might do such a thing, but Gu Nuanxin was still uneasy, vaguely sensing that something was wrong. She hesitated for a moment and asked, "...Besides Dad, is there anyone else who knows we're together?"
Gu Yihuai raised an eyebrow and pulled her out of his arms: "Don't take the blame on yourself. This has nothing to do with you. Don't overthink it..." As he spoke, he gently tapped her forehead.
Gu Nuanxin looked up at him. His chin was covered in bruises and his beard had grown out. The wound on his forehead had almost healed, but it was still slightly red.
"Brother, I'm willing to share everything with you. I don't want to see you bear all this alone; it breaks my heart..."
After being scolded by her father in the flower hall that day, Gu Nuanxin repeatedly tried to explain to her father that it wasn't Gu Yihuai who seduced her, but that she herself couldn't control herself and tempted her brother. But she didn't know what Gu Yihuai had said to her father that night, and no matter what she said, her father was convinced that she was completely infatuated with her brother and was willing to take the blame for him, and he refused to believe her.
Gu Nuanxin's words softened Gu Yihuai's heart, and all his weariness vanished at her tenderness. He smiled, lifted her chin, and lowered his head to kiss her red lips, his voice low and seductive:
"Now there's something I need Ah Nuan to share with me..."
