Alibuda Chronicles Part 1: Volume 9, Chapter 5

Chapter Five: The Heroic Oren

was enjoying his time with both Ah Xue and Zhi Zhi, but I still had my daily work to do. Throughout the security process, besides repeated inspections, I could only perform monotonous paperwork. Because of this, I had to enter the palace every one or two days to report to His Majesty the King.

President Ryan and his entourage were on their way to our country, and the latest intelligence on their journey was constantly being sent over. This day, the latest intelligence arrived. Since I was patrolling outside the city, I received it first and, coincidentally, needed to enter the palace immediately to report, so I was responsible for delivering it.

Since my perverted father left Sara, I hadn't entered or left the palace as many times in the past month as I had in the last ten years.

Our esteemed King Leng Qiji only works in the mornings. On afternoons like this, his schedule should be for a nap. However, when I requested an audience with His Majesty under the pretext of urgent military intelligence and obtained permission from the palace officials to enter the back garden, I discovered that the reality was clearly not like that.

"Your Majesty, is it comfortable?"

"Nonsense, nonsense, nonsense! You bunch of sluts, shake your asses harder, give me some more pleasure."

"Hehehe~~ Your Majesty! Your Majesty! Should I bring you a few more elixirs of immortality to enhance your pleasure?"

"Hehehehe, I'm going to have sex with ten more palace maids later."

Even while still in the corridor, the faint sounds of men and women indulging in unrestrained passion drifted from the back garden. Without needing to imagine how wild the sounds were, just listening to the words revealed how exciting His Majesty's afternoon nap was, and if I were foolish enough to go in and report military matters at this time, my life would be more precarious than a candle flickering in the wind.

However, it's rather amusing. When did His Majesty begin to adopt the defiant spirit of the southern barbarians? Starting to shout the language of the strong during intercourse? Does he think it gives him more of a powerful aura?

Waiting for someone to finish having sex from afar was truly a chore, especially with the constant lewd sounds and moans, making me feel like a perverted lecherous insect eavesdropping.

Fortunately, the wait wasn't long. It seemed someone reminded His Majesty, so after about fifteen minutes of standing, His Majesty summoned me to the Imperial Study.

Naturally, His Majesty appeared before me impeccably dressed, sitting upright, exuding a regal aura, showing no trace of the absurdity of his lunch break earlier.

I reported the news I had received. President Ryan's itinerary was progressing smoothly; he had already entered Alibuda and was expected to arrive in Sara in two days. However, today, among the distinguished guests accompanying President Ryan, representatives from Ishtar were added.

Although President Ryan's trip abroad was in his personal capacity, it received the full support of the Temple of Light, who hoped to leverage his twelve years of accumulated connections to unite the forces of various nations, hold a far-reaching summit, and conclude a peace treaty.

Ishtar, the premier nation of dark magic, is frequently at war with our country. Two years ago, the Blood Nightmare Great Spirit Wizard led an elite force in a surprise attack, only to suffer a complete annihilation. They will send envoys, ostensibly to appease the enemy, but no one believes the matter is so simple. A fierce power struggle is likely inevitable.

Diplomatic battles are not like battlefield victories; sometimes, subduing the enemy without fighting is more important than a spectacular victory. Are our current talents sufficient to handle this? Even I doubt it. Therefore, after I finished my briefing in a very formulaic manner, His Majesty issued an order to the military.

"I have recently heard that the renowned swordsman of the North, the legendary strongest guard, Mr. Oren, has arrived in Alibuda. Some have seen him in Sara. If we can obtain his assistance, it will greatly benefit our country. Order the military to find Mr. Oren at all costs."

The legendary guard? Mr. Oren? I felt the name sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn't quite place it. Anyway, the order was to be given to all the soldiers of Alibuda, not just me. So I mumbled a few "Long live the Emperor!" and kowtowed before leaving.

It was still quite early; I wondered if His Majesty would go back to sleep. To be fair, he lacked ability. While he wouldn't be considered a tyrant, he simply lacked the courage. As for not becoming a foolish ruler, it was because he was lucky enough to have two daughters who profoundly influenced the fate of Alibuda.

Without Yueying's twelve-year political marriage, Alibuda wouldn't be so triumphant today; and if Leng Linglan hadn't kept the military in check and repeatedly resisted foreign aggression, Alibuda, even if it hadn't been invaded by foreigners, would probably have long since fallen into a state of warlordism and division.

I had no interest in browsing the palace and was about to leave when I unexpectedly ran into Leng Linglan, who was being escorted in by a group of officers, right at the palace gate. We both paused, and while there wasn't any real animosity, the atmosphere wasn't exactly friendly either.

I briefly explained His Majesty's decree, and Leng Linglan frowned. I knew this second princess didn't particularly like wandering martial artists and swordsmen of unknown origin, believing that employing too many of them would only destabilize the military. Moreover, as the commander of the Imperial Guard, responsible for security, how could she possibly save face if His Majesty wanted to bring back some inexplicable bodyguard?

After giving my instructions, I was about to leave when the group of flies eager to flatter the beauty began to mock me. I was too lazy to say anything. Leng Linglan, citing the need for harmony within the military, feigned a few reprimands, but ultimately couldn't control her emotions and glared at me, saying, "I don't know what you're thinking, sister... I don't know what Madam Yueying is thinking, actually letting scumbags participate in such important security work..."

Hearing this, I quickly nodded and said, "I feel the same way. Madam Yueying's thinking is truly strange, actually letting so many scumbags work as security guards. It's really unbelievable."

Such obvious mockery, if Leng Linglan didn't react, something would be wrong. So I was already on guard, and when I felt two hidden forces attacking my waist, I reacted immediately. Leng Linglan

's swordsmanship was indeed superb. She attacked without warning, even with someone in between, at close range, accurately targeting her target. If I hadn't been on guard, I would definitely have had my belt cut off again, exposing my genitals and making a fool of myself once more.

However, while the experience of the Southern Barbarian journey didn't improve my martial arts skills, it greatly enhanced my eyesight and reflexes. Being on guard, I feigned a fall the moment I sensed something, pushing several nearby officers.

This move caught Leng Linglan completely off guard. Having misjudged my abilities, she hastily withdrew her attack, but at such close range, it was impossible to completely dissipate the force. A chorus of screams and cries of pain erupted as several officers' trousers were mysteriously ripped open, leaving them drenched in cold sweat. The unluckiest officer even suffered a severed thigh wound, bleeding profusely and screaming in agony.

"John Farrell!"

Having suffered a setback, Leng Linglan quickly pushed aside the crowd and rushed out, but I also took advantage of the chaos to escape through the palace gates, laughing loudly as I made my escape.

"Those who do security work are scum, and what kind of crazy woman is she, randomly slashing men's trouser legs with a knife? Hahaha..."

Offending Leng Linglan didn't have any lasting consequences. Anyway, she originally wanted to dismember me, and now, although she's even angrier, she can't do anything to me until she finds a legitimate reason. On the contrary, the other task is really annoying.

The clever talkers do the talking, the fools do the work—this seems to be an unchanging rule. His Majesty the King's words became an order weighing heavily on us. Sara's military and police were mobilized in large numbers, searching the streets and alleys for the legendary guard, Mr. Oren.

President Ryan and his entourage entered our country from the border. Due to their admiration for my perverted father's reputation, they stayed at his fortress? The Third New Tokyo City for a day before departing the next day. According to the itinerary, they will enter Sara the day after tomorrow.

Inside the palace, some courtiers believed His Majesty should go out of the city to greet the guest, while others thought it would be beneath the dignity of the state, arguing that even a distinguished guest should be greeted within the city walls. This trivial matter of ideology caused a heated debate among the courtiers; meanwhile, our military was simultaneously burdened with heavy security duties and ordered to search the streets and alleys for the person

His Majesty had specifically requested, a truly agonizing situation. I initially didn't know who His Majesty was looking for, but later learned from some colleagues that this Mr. Oren was a renowned swordsman from the north, specializing in bodyguard work, traveling among the various kingdoms, occasionally employed by kings and nobles, but most of the time, he wielded his sword to uphold justice and chivalry, earning the deep respect of the common people of the northern kingdoms.

He had been famous for a long time, but because he spent most of his life in the north and rarely went south,

his name was not well-known in Alibuda. It was only in recent years, after our country won several battles and signed several trade contracts with the northern countries, that northern merchants came south to trade, bringing his legendary story to our country. "His deeds are so numerous that they could not be counted for three days and three nights. He slew dragons and tigers. The legendary strongest bodyguard is this one."

Bodyguarding is a specialized job with special skills. If it is done by experienced professionals, it will be twice as effective with half the effort. In case of emergencies, they are more efficient than a bunch of panicked regular soldiers.

President Ryan is of such a noble status that His Majesty, for the sake of caution, immediately issued an order to find him after hearing that this extraordinary bodyguard had come to our country, regardless of the embarrassment it would cause his daughter.

A friend who used to be in the Imperial Guard and is now an intelligence officer in the military revealed a secret to me.

"I heard that President Ryan personally sent a letter this time, saying that he received news that Mr. Oren was traveling in Sara and hoped to have the opportunity to meet Mr. Oren after arriving in Sara. His Majesty went along with it and issued an order to search for him."

"It doesn't matter, anyway, I'm not in charge of finding him. Let that woman be angry to death."

Walls have ears, so you still have to be careful when talking about Leng Linglan, otherwise just this one sentence is enough to cause trouble.

"By the way, the military has so many people searching everywhere, they've dragged even a rat out of its hole, let alone a person. Where on earth has Mr. Oren gone? They haven't been able to find him for so long!"

"I also find it strange. Someone clearly said they saw him in Sara's restaurant, but he's suddenly disappeared these past two days."

"Enough of this digression, what does Mr. Oren look like?"

"Well, he should be easy to recognize. A middle-aged man, with a dignified yet gentle appearance, a short beard, sunglasses, and a long, wide red and black robe, with a wine gourd hanging from his waist..."

Hearing this, my heart skipped a beat, and I almost spat out the wine in my mouth. After finally calming myself down, I hurriedly asked, "Does Mr. Oren also carry a sword, a black greatsword, longer than usual?"

"Yes? That's what the official documents say. You haven't seen it, have you?"

"This black greatsword is usually carried on the shoulder, and it smells incredibly bad?"

"Uh, I don't know about that. It's not mentioned in the official documents. Where did you get this information from?"

Hearing this, I felt a cold sweat break out on my back. This Mr. Oren's attire sounded exactly like Mao Yan'an's. This wicked middle-aged man, full of bad intentions, wouldn't he be plotting something bad again? He's currently staying at the Duke's mansion. If anything happens to him, I certainly won't be able to escape responsibility.

Thinking about it this way, it's no wonder that as soon as he entered Sara, he was busy wandering around, just to spread the news and let people know that "he" had arrived. And once that effect was achieved, he hid in the Duke's mansion and hasn't come out for the past two days. The military has only been able to search in various hotels and homes, so of course they can't find any trace of him.

But what exactly is he doing this for? I really can't figure it out. I was just about to go back and ask when I heard people in the street making a fuss, shouting that they had found Mr. Oren.

I peeked out and saw a red-robed swordsman carrying a black greatsword, striding confidently towards the palace, surrounded by a crowd. It was none other than Mao Yan'an. He saw me from afar and even raised his hand, seemingly greeting me casually.

"Damn it, I've been screwed over by that old man again..."

I muttered to myself. I knew that once His Majesty found the man, he would immediately summon the relevant military personnel to adjust the security arrangements, so my immediate reaction was to rush back to the manor, ignoring everything else, and instructing Uncle Fu to tell anyone who came looking for me that I was completely drunk and unconscious. Then I indulged in a wild party with Ah Xue until late at night, completely oblivious to what Mao Yan'an had been doing outside.

When I finally woke up, I patted Ah Xue's round, white bottom, covered her with a blanket, and slipped out to question Uncle Fu, trying to get to the bottom of what had happened that afternoon.

First, His Majesty sent messengers to summon me twice, but upon hearing that I was too drunk to be questioned, they left disappointed.

Meanwhile, news from the palace indicated that after His Majesty's meeting with Mao Yan'an, the uncle, with his eloquence and insight, quickly won the unanimous favor of the entire court. People even forgot to test his martial arts skills, believing his identity to be genuine and treating him as an honored guest, preparing to arrange a meeting between the two when President Ryan arrives.

The uncle also offered suggestions on the current security arrangements, stating that during his tour of Sara, he observed that while the military's deployment was good, there were several shortcomings that needed improvement, otherwise it would become a weakness in security.

Regardless of whether his suggestions were right or wrong, His Majesty reprimanded the Second Princess in court for her negligence, advising her to learn more from distinguished guests. Although the tone wasn't harsh, it was a great insult to Leng Linglan, who was known for her strong sense of pride. It's said that Leng Linglan turned pale with anger on the spot, even crushing the silver cup in her hand.

Although I still don't know why the uncle did this, given the current outcome, I really want to say, "Uncle, you did a great job."

That night, Mao Yan'an didn't return, which wasn't unexpected. The next day, I returned to the security work site and didn't see Leng Linglan. I learned that she had been so angry with Mao Yan'an the day before that she had gone to revise the security measures early that morning and wouldn't be back before dark.

Mao Yan'an, who had been appointed by His Majesty the King to assist Leng Linglan and me, was dressed like a swordsman, standing quietly in the corner.

If he continued to carry that black greatsword, accidentally cutting someone while turning around wouldn't be a problem, but if people discovered the sword's material was wrong, it would be a big problem. Therefore, Mao Yan'an leaned on the sword, his hands on the hilt, his calm gaze silently monitoring the entire scene through his sunglasses.

Although he stood in the corner, the presence of such an important figure naturally became the focus of attention for the officers and soldiers on site, who frequently turned to look at him.

As soon as I appeared, several officers who were usually on good terms with me stepped forward to explain why there were extra people around, given that I had supposedly died drunk at home the day before. I waved them away, leaving myself alone to confront Mao Yan'an, furious and shouting,

"Hey! Who the hell are you? Is this a place for outsiders to just walk in?"

Because it was a corner, with a blind spot and a distance from the others, they could only see the heated argument on our side, not our expressions. I deliberately shouted loudly, adding gestures to make the soldiers in the distance think we were arguing, thus creating a completely different conversation.

"Uncle, what's this Mr. Oren? You've been pretending all this time, why are you disguising yourself here this time?"

"I have my reasons for coming. Nobody knows we know each other now, so you can quietly make a fortune. You'll get your share later."

"I wouldn't dare take your benefits. Don't you think about it? This Oren is supposedly the strongest bodyguard in history. If he discovers someone impersonating him, do you think you'll survive?"

"You don't need to worry about this problem, because this Mr. Oren simply doesn't exist. The title of 'strongest bodyguard in history' is just a myth."

"What?"

Shocked, I shouted a little too loudly, drawing the attention of many who thought a violent scene was about to unfold. Mao Yan'an raised his hand and waved it a few times, calming the unease and making them turn away. Realizing my lapse, I quickly lowered my voice.

"How could that be? Legend has it he's very famous in the North, slaying dragons and tigers, and I've heard he's killed many powerful masters and sorcerers. Every battle is recorded; how could it be false?"

"He is indeed very famous, but there are many ways to become famous..."

Beneath his sunglasses, Mao Yan'an winked slyly and explained slowly.

In the northern kingdoms, there is indeed a famous and legendary hero named Oren. Everyone knows his exploits and legends. However, precisely because he is so legendary…

“Nephew, don’t you find it strange when you hear about him? If someone can be so legendary, is he even human? Even if he’s some kind of elf or orc, if he were truly that strong, wouldn’t he have already become one of the five strongest beings?”

“Hmm, that makes sense.”

“So, this strongest guard in history simply doesn’t exist.”

Mao Yan’an said with a low laugh. The northern kingdoms are frequently ravaged by war, and both soldiers and civilians love to hear legendary stories. The storytellers and bards there have created all sorts of legends, some based on real epics, others featuring completely fictional characters. Mr. Oren is one such example.

"Because the story was so captivating, it was passed down orally and gradually spread to other parts of the land. However, with so many people and so many stories, the narrative became increasingly distorted. Eventually, this fictional character seemed to become a real person. People in the south only knew that he was famous in the north, but they didn't know that although the story was well-known, this person never actually existed."

The land was home to numerous nations, and distance, coupled with war and isolationist policies, severely hampered information flow. At most, they could obtain news from neighboring countries. For those thousands of miles away, separated by two or three countries, it was like another world entirely. Some people in remote areas never even left their villages their entire lives.

Because of this, and the spread of misinformation, a fictional character from an adventure story in the north could come to life in a foreign land. Of course, unless one was a traveler like Mao Yan'an, who had traveled extensively and possessed boundless knowledge, it was difficult for ordinary people to know these stories and utilize them.

"You changed into this outfit when you were in the Southern Barbarian lands. What was your purpose?"

"Oh, this outfit is quite famous. I don't have the Stone Hat anymore, so of course I have to find another way to save my life and escape."

"Save your life and escape? But you were able to prepare a set of clothes so quickly. Don't you think that's a bit..."

"Clothes are nothing. The trouble is the sword in my hand, because according to the latest version, Oren is wielding a large black sword."

"How do you even know that?"

"Of course I know, because I wrote this work."

Mao Yan'an raised his eyebrows, pulled something out of his pocket in a flash, and then put it back. Although it was only for a short time, I could see that it was a manuscript-like thing, with the words "Final Fantasy X" written on the page.

"Huh? You wrote Final Fantasy? No way?"

Mao Yan'an smiled mysteriously, made a victory sign, and whispered, "X-2 is currently a bestseller. If you'd like, buy a copy too."

"..."

"Why aren't you saying anything?"

"Uncle, I really admire you. You're a traveling illustrator, a comic book assistant, a clothing designer, a rock star in the South, and now a novelist. Which other follower can be as multi-talented as you?"

"A scholar is useless, and I don't have any unparalleled martial arts skills. How can I make a living without some skills?"

His words were utterly self-righteous and even made some sense. When I asked him why he had infiltrated this place, Mao Yan'an chuckled, "I'm a professional painter, after all. Besides landscapes and cultural relics, I also chase after heroes and beauties. This Peace Summit will be a historic event; how could I not secretly paint a few pictures? Besides, three of the ten beauties will be attending at the same time; how could I not sneak in?"

I originally wanted to say that with his past connections in the Golden Flower Federation, participating as a guest shouldn't be a problem, so why resort to such underhanded tactics? But his words completely drew my attention.

Spring Breeze, Summer Flowers, Autumn Moon, Winter Snow—the Four Heavenly Maidens are known as celestial beauties. As for the remaining seven famous flowers, I had seen most of them, but I had still missed some.

The Crimson Plum Blossom. I didn't know how Sister Dragon Girl got this title before, but after hearing Mao Yan'an talk about her training process that day, I completely understood.

Twin Rainbows. Of these twin sisters, Yu Hong has already been won over. Although I really hope to get my hands on Yu Ni as well, fulfilling my dream of having two at once, it seems unlikely. I hope both sisters can reach the East Sea safely.

Frosty Ice Orchid. This Princess Ling Lan now works with me, and we see each other every day. Although I fully appreciate her charm as an ice queen, just the thought of her stabbing me is enough to extinguish any desire I might have.

Yellow Spring Chrysanthemum. Ghostly Evening, as the Black Dragon Society's number one assassin, would certainly not be a good thing if she appeared before me. Since I fled to the Southern Barbarian Lands, the Black Dragon Society has given up on hunting me down, so I don't think I'll have any chance to meet her now, and I hope we never see each other again.

Drunken Immortal Poppy. I don't know her name, nor have I ever seen her. It's said that very few people in the world have seen her. This beauty, supposedly a powerful figure in the Black Dragon Society, I really doubt whether she got into the top ten beauties through bribery or vote rigging.

Besides these five flowers, I previously thought the long-lost Evil Lotus was also one, but after asking Mao Yan'an, I confirmed that it wasn't. As for the remaining two famous flowers, I still don't know who they are.

Now, Uncle says that three of the ten beauties will appear at this peace talks: Sister Yueying and Linglan the stinky bitch. Those two are definitely there, but who is the remaining one? Is it someone I know? Or is someone from the other two famous flowers I don't know about accompanying us?

"Uncle, stop keeping me in suspense. Besides our two princesses, who else is there?"

"Hmm, as one of the security leaders, how can you not know at all? The royal family of Ishtar, the top performer of the Zhumofang Opera Troupe, the Purple Narcissus among the seven famous flowers, Narcissus."

On the land, besides bards, there are also some performance troupes composed of artists, some exclusive to one place, others traveling to various countries to perform at invited locations. Unfortunately, despite their popularity, their social status wasn't necessarily much higher than that of prostitutes. In fact, it was not uncommon for small and medium-sized performance troupes to secretly engage in itinerant prostitution for economic reasons.

Large performance troupes, however, were different. With thousands of members, long processions, and even their own armed forces for protection, they formed a formidable force.

Internal struggles within these troupes were extremely fierce, but they were also the perfect place for women with natural beauty to rise to the top. The glamorous costumes, acting skills, and singing amplified their beauty, captivating the wealthy and powerful in the audience, who vied for their affections and spent lavishly.

I knew of many famous women who rose to prominence this way. Later, I heard from elders in the military that some large song and dance troupes were funded and operated by foreign powers, and the beautiful performers were actually trained intelligence agents who used their travels to various countries to gather intelligence and conduct their work.

However, it's an undeniable fact that such an organization contains beautiful women, and even a group of them. I'm not surprised that one of the seven beauties comes from there. The only thing I can't understand is how a member of the royal family, with such a noble status, could participate in the work of an actress, which is considered lowly?

Narcissus... what a beautiful name! Just hearing about her status as a top performer and imagining her royal lineage is exciting. I wonder what it will be like to see her in person.
