Alibuda Chronicles Part 1: Volume 9, Chapter 6

Chapter Six: Soaring High

Before meeting him in person, any sexual fantasies were futile, and we could no longer muddle through. Leng Linglan, having finished her work, had returned angrily from outside the city. Seeing the two of us standing together talking, she was first taken aback, then walked over. During

my conversation with Mao Yan'an, he leaned against the wall, while I gestured wildly and cursed at him. To onlookers, it seemed like we were arguing fiercely, all for the sake of this final, furious shout.

"Let me tell you, I don't care how famous you are, or who you really are, just remember this: don't think you're anything special, and don't think that no one in Alibuda is invincible. I advise you to open your eyes and not underestimate the soldiers of Alibuda."

These words were utterly insincere, but they were extremely pleasing to the ears of all the soldiers present, managing to garner some goodwill for this infamous scoundrel.

Mao Yan'an, ever the opportunist, remained unperturbed by my outburst, simply saying, "A young hero, your reputation is well-deserved."

As the saying goes, favors are bestowed upon those who help them, and Mao Yan'an's timely words were a perfect complement. As I turned and passed Leng Linglan, striding away, soldiers nearby applauded and cheered, pleased that I had thwarted this arrogant guest and greatly restored the prestige of the Alibuda army. They figured this would save me some trouble in the future.

When I passed Leng Linglan, she seemed about to say something, but ultimately remained silent, continuing her aloof walk towards Mao Yan'an. What they said was of no concern to me.

This deliberately staged performance had its effect the very next day. Some officers who had previously kept their distance began to gather around, praising my abilities and expressing friendliness. I naturally went along with them, joining in the scathing criticism of Mao Yan'an and, incidentally, speaking ill of the Second Princess.

Having Mao Yan'an in this position is indeed a great help to me, but I've long since made up my mind that if his misdeeds are exposed and his identity revealed, I will not only deny all ties with him, but I will even take the initiative to kick him while he's down to prove my innocence. After all, he often says that he was born for art, so he must be mentally prepared to one day die for art.

To entertain the distinguished guests from various countries, especially President Ryan, the reception work was just as important as security. The most luxurious residence in Sarane was repainted and renovated to accommodate the envoys and dignitaries from various countries. A luxurious manor was even specially built for President Ryan and his entourage, magnificent and elegant, costing a huge amount of manpower and resources.

And when all this was ready, our long-awaited delegation finally arrived.

The grandeur upon entering the city was truly indescribable. To show our welcome, the city gates of Sarane were wide open, allowing the delegation to see the royal palace at the end of the street at a glance, and then slowly walk along this wide street, which stretched for miles, towards the palace.

To maintain national dignity, the group of pedantic ministers ultimately decided that His Majesty the King should greet the distinguished guests from various countries at the main gate of the palace, neither inside nor outside.

Such a grand political event, as usual, should have been welcomed by the people lining the streets. Naturally, none of these high-ranking officials and nobles considered the common people's desire to stay home and rest, advocating for an order for all citizens to come out and welcome them.

However, this time it was unnecessary. Upon hearing that Princess Yueying, whom they hadn't seen for a long time, was returning, along with President Ryan, the Special Envoy of Ishtar, and other internationally renowned figures, the people of Sara went mad. They lined up outside the palace the night before, forming long queues, hoping to catch a glimpse of these celebrities.

The next day, we had to mobilize troops to maintain order. There were as many as seventeen powerful groups, large and small, participating in the meeting. Among them, five countries, including my own Alibuda, possessed the power to influence the entire continent's affairs.

The Golden Flower Federation, as the host and chairperson of the meeting, comprised 242 people, including the president and his entourage. Compared to President Ryan's entourage at home, this was a deliberately reduced number, done to save face for us.

The elven superpower, Solancia, currently maintains peaceful relations with us and showed some sincerity this time, with a delegation of 33 people, including the special envoy.

Rosetta also observed proper etiquette, with a delegation of only a few dozen people, which wasn't excessive.

As for the Black Magic Nation of Ishtar, which has frequently clashed with us, it seemed like a deliberate provocation. Their delegation totaled over 1200 people, of whom only 500 were cavalry. The rest were either skilled in martial arts or exuded magical energy; clearly, they were not ordinary people. If anything happened, this would be tantamount to inviting an armed force into the country.

Normally, we would never allow the Ishtar people to enter so ostentatiously, and of course, the Ishtar people would never agree to enter the capital of an enemy nation. The reason this grand event was made possible was entirely due to the strong support of the Golden Flower Federation and the Cihang Temple.

Although the Golden Flower Federation is the world's leading power, it alone is not enough to generate such influence. However, the Cihang Temple is the center of faith on Earth, and all priests, monks, and clergy are under its command and appointment. Its influence extends across the globe, and every major power must be wary of it.

This time, President Ryan visited friendly countries under the guise of a pre-term vacation. Because of the "pleasant talks," he invited them to travel with him, and as a result, like a snowball rolling downhill, a large entourage arrived in Sara. In name, this was still a simple private visit, but in reality, it had become the grandest summit on Earth in nearly fifty years.

Actually, I really don't understand what those high-ranking officials were thinking. For some strange, even ridiculous, ideology, when it's just a matter of everyone smiling and shaking hands, they insisted on wearing gloves or using fake hands to shake hands.

But... no matter how much I disapprove, the Temple of Light did indeed facilitate this summit in this way, and I was fortunate enough to participate and witness this historic moment. I would rather have bought a ticket to attend than been unlucky enough to shoulder the security duties for this historic event.

Mao Yan'an was truly at home in this setting. I think even if you searched all of Alibuda, you would find it difficult to find a traveler as knowledgeable as him, especially given his experience working for the Golden Flower Federation and his familiarity with political figures from various countries. As we stood on high ground, looking down at the people entering the city, Mao Yan'an pointed out the names of each person, identifying them by their respective countries. He even recognized some individuals who had deliberately disguised themselves as guards and whose names weren't on the visitor list.

Regardless of his pointing out the flaws in the security work, his keen eye alone was enough to impress. I saw Leng Linglan glare fiercely at the officer beside her, because our intelligence agencies hadn't obtained so much information. If Mao Yan'an hadn't recognized these people, they would have returned home believing that Alibuda had no capable people, and our military would have become a laughing stock.

Looking down from the city wall, with so many carriages and so many important figures, I could clearly feel the tension, pressing down on me, yet also a sense of exhilaration.

Even an unknown soldier, if he could make a name for himself at this grand event, leaving a deep impression on the dignitaries of various countries, would not only become an international celebrity overnight but also be remembered in history. That feeling of having the world at my fingertips easily transformed into a raging fire that could consume all reason.

"Hmph, what's so great about these guys down there? Ishtar's swine can only be arrogant for a while, because from this day forward, this is my era."

Turning back to coldly glance at the few officers who had originally been about to flatter me but were now stunned in place, I said in a disdainful tone, "And my legend begins today."

Suddenly uttering such a bold statement, those around me naturally thought I had gone mad, most thought I had become arrogant, and as for that extremely harsh snort, it was naturally Princess Leng Linglan, who despised me to the core.

It felt pretty good to make a stunning statement, but if I continued, I'd get into trouble. I'm not the kind of person who doesn't know my own abilities, at least not like these fools next to me who clearly think I'm talking nonsense but still flatter me by calling it lofty ambitions.

"Go away, you idiots, do you think I'm bragging? Do you think I'm that shameless?"

I deliberately spoke loudly, respectfully gesturing to the side, and smiled, "What I just said was all on behalf of Her Highness the Second Princess. After this grand event, everyone on earth will know that my Alibuda has such a pillar of strength."

As soon as I said this, a chorus of praise filled the air. All the officers, regardless of faction, nodded in agreement. A few quick-witted ones were already scrambling to flatter Leng Linglan, who seemed to be taken aback by my sudden change in attitude. The beauty gave a slight snort of anger, "Nonsense," and then fell silent.

Others might have thought she was furious, but I was confident that her words just now were her true feelings—things she couldn't say to anyone else, yet I had spoken them aloud in public, and she couldn't easily lash out. Even the most guarded woman would be affected.

That provocation was enough; I had no intention of further provoke Leng Linglan. So, when the group had entered the city, and Leng Linglan rode down from the city wall, asking if I, the second-in-command, wanted to go to the palace banquet, I politely declined, saying it would be easier to supervise from the city wall. Leng Linglan didn't waste any more words, pulled on the reins, and led the group away.

I had seen through Leng Linglan's intentions. It had been quite satisfying to play tricks on her earlier, but karma came quickly. After she left, someone came looking for me.

"Nephew, why aren't you going?"

"The banquet is too crowded and noisy, and it's full of refined scoundrels like you. I don't want to join the fun. I'll just stay here and look at the stars. The banquet? I'll go after it's over."

"What a pity! What you just said sounded very impressive. Do you dare say there wasn't a bit of sincerity in those words? There are many distinguished guests at this welcome banquet. You're a rising star in Alibuda, and you're acquainted with Lady Yueying. Go and show your face, gain some recognition; it will benefit you greatly in the future. Why hide on this desolate city wall?"

"Hey uncle, what are you trying to do to stir things up again? You've done too many bad things; you won't be able to hide your true colors anymore."

Hearing me say that, Mao Yan'an seemed at a loss. He waved his hands and sat down next to me, saying, "I'm not that bad. I just feel sorry for you, such a good young man. Even if you're not interested in the banquet, I heard from Xue'er that you and Lady Yueying have a very good relationship. After so long apart, don't you want to see her? Maybe… no, she definitely wants to see you too."

"Uncle, if someone else said these things, I would consider it, but coming from you… hehe, let's sit here together."

I knew how important the banquet being held in the palace was, but I didn't want to get close, didn't want to touch that world.

Sister Yueying… does she miss me too?

This thought did give me an irresistible urge, but I held back.

Uncle is undoubtedly resourceful, but things don't always go his way. —Actually, I really want to see Sister Yueying.

People always say that one feels timid when nearing home, but I never imagined that I would be the one filled with fear when a long-lost friend returned. I had been looking forward to this moment, but when it arrived, I faced it with retreat.

Deep down, I was truly afraid. After more than a decade apart, had Sister Yueying changed? Was I no longer the stubborn boy who needed pity? Was she still the same gentle and lovely older sister?

I didn't know these things, and subconsciously, I didn't want to know, so I adopted this approach. Unfortunately, although I avoided trouble, it still found its way to me.

The next day, we continued our patrol from the city walls, remotely monitoring President Ryan's residence, while also analyzing the information we had received over the past few days. When I returned to Sara that day, I was immediately assassinated. Although the assassins were all killed on the spot by Leng Linglan, the military still did not give up investigating the source.

The most likely sources of the assassins were Ishtar, whom I killed the Great Spirit Witch; Solancia, who breached the fortress; and the Black Dragon Society, whose evil mask I exposed…

Of the three, the Black Dragon Society is the most worrisome, because this peace talk is very likely to discuss how to deal with the Black Dragon Society. Who knows if they will send more people to assassinate important figures and create chaos in the process? Because of this concern, we kept speculating how we would act if we were assassins.

"President Ryan's residence is in a good location, heavily guarded, and there are almost no blind spots around it. If we want to attack, we can only take advantage of his usual outings." "

So, when President Ryan returns to the residence, the only way to assassinate him is to sneak in, not to launch a strong attack from the outside."

"If we can't find him on all four sides, what about diagonally above?"

Halfway through the discussion, I frowned and suddenly interjected, catching everyone off guard. After a while, someone finally understood and answered.

"From diagonally above? That's difficult, isn't it? For safety, there aren't any nearby buildings around the manor. The enemy..."

"But, doesn't the lack of cover mean the manor's terrain is open and easy to attack? The enemy doesn't even need to use experts; just a few heavy weapons would be enough."

"Lord Farrell, we can't agree to that. To attack the manor from the outer buildings, do you know how many heavy weapons you'd need at that distance? This is the capital, after all. Do you think we'd let the enemy so brazenly set up heavy weapons nearby?"

Leng Linglan wasn't there, but her subordinates still looked down on me, speaking arrogantly and treating me like an incompetent fool like themselves.

"It doesn't need to be huge, a few heavy crossbows will suffice. I used to be in the Imperial Guard, my knowledge of weapons and weaponry is no less than yours. Don't lump me in with those idle noble soldiers." "

Nephew, what kind of heavy crossbow do you mean?"

"Um... I mean, Uncle Oren, we're busy, please don't interrupt."

"Hey, is it detachable, with four wheels at the bottom, a triangular crossbow frame, firing eighteen bolts at a time, and capable of rapid fire..."

"Sounds quite plausible. Eighteen bolts at once, that's the latest model on the black market, Uncle, where did you see the image?"

“Eighteen crossbows, and there are scratches on the crossbow mounts. Looks like they weren’t handled carefully during transport… Ouch! That guy was really careless; his foot got run over by the wheels. It must hurt a lot.”

Mao Yan’an had been standing behind us, not participating in the discussion, but upon hearing these words, everyone knew something was wrong. They quickly turned around to look. They saw Mao Yan’an leaning on his sword with one hand and holding a telescope in the other, gazing westward. Following his gaze, they could vaguely see a heavy crossbow mounted on a building several hundred feet away, aimed at the residence below.

“How could there be something like that there?”

“Take it down! This must be a conspiracy by some foreign agents!”

“Luckily, we discovered it early; it’s not too late…”

Just as these useless people were scrambling to find fault and shifting blame, Mao Yan’an pointed, shattering their hopes once again. There were voices in the courtyard of the mansion. More than a dozen people came out to arrange the carriages. It was clear that President Ryan and his wife were about to leave the mansion. A dozen people appeared next to the heavy crossbow. They were agile and adjusted the crossbow, ready to launch an assassination attack.

In this critical moment, chaos erupted instantly. Sending someone to warn them wouldn't even get them there before the crossbow bolts were fired; shouting here wouldn't get a response from the inn; and as for attacking the crossbows directly from our position, unfortunately, none of us seemed to have the skill.

The situation was so chaotic that nothing could be done. These useless fools, who usually complained about being ruled by women, refused to contribute when faced with a crisis, only thinking of the foolish method of immediately seeking the Second Princess's help.

If it had only been the neighboring country's president who died, I wouldn't have cared so much, but thinking of Sister Yueying also facing danger, in my anxiety, I drew my sword and wounded a few of the irrational good-for-nothings, stabilizing the situation.

"That's right, our skills are insufficient, but Mr. Oren is a top expert. With his help, he can definitely destroy the crossbows,"

a few of the guys said after calming down. Logically, it was indeed a brilliant plan, but unfortunately, Mr. Oren was a weak and charlatan, so they were immediately outmaneuvered.

"It's my duty, but I have a better idea."

Mao Yan'an's idea sounded like it was a recipe for disaster. To celebrate the arrival of our distinguished guests, Sarah had recently released many large hot air balloons, which were floating in the sky. We happened to have a few above us. Mao Yan'an's idea was to form a strike team, with each person tied to a rope around their waist, then using bows and arrows to attach the ropes to the balloons and move them there.

If they could stop the assassination attempt, it would be a tremendous achievement, and they would become internationally famous. If President Ryan were to be assassinated, the security personnel would definitely be held accountable, especially those without powerful backers. So this was essentially a choice with no other option, not to mention the threat of my sword.

The assault team was quickly assembled. As they pulled the ropes and fired arrows at the largest balloon in the sky, I stood beside Mao Yan'an and sneered, "How despicable, uncle! What kind of assault team is this? This kind of shoddy tactic is just a suicide squad tricking people into dying. Aren't you afraid these people will come after you?"

As expected, in this situation, it's not easy to entangle the balloon with arrows, but the chance of piercing it is very high. A balloon with a hole in it is more terrifying than a mad horse, hurtling off at high speed. If they're lucky, they can land accurately and fight the enemy; if they're unlucky, for those on the ground, this string of things drifting and shooting wildly in the sky is a more effective warning sign than fireworks.

And watching that string of people spinning rapidly in the air, emitting extremely shrill screams, it's clear they were used more as fireworks than as an assault team.

"Hehe, I lied with immense courage, but you're quite bold, nephew."

"I've always been incredibly bold. Which one are you referring to?"

"It's nothing really. I'm just curious. Your feet are clearly wrapped in ropes, almost to the point of death. Why are you so calm?"

"What feet? What ropes? What wraps? Wait… Oh! No!"

The ropes shooting into the sky, their ends dragging on the ground, suddenly wrapped around my right leg. Before I could do anything, I was lifted up by those damned ropes and flung wildly through the air.

Compared to the center of the spin, I was at the very end, experiencing the most intense swaying, like clinging to the tail of a raging dragon, being tossed around. All I could hear were screams and howling wind. In no time, I felt dizzy and started vomiting in mid-air.

Sometimes, even I hated myself for calculating so precisely, because being in mid-air made us the most obvious targets. The agents next to the heavy crossbow, seeing us flying in that direction, immediately turned the crossbow and started firing wildly at us.

In this situation, being at the back was a blessing, because being tossed around like that made it the hardest to aim, and I unknowingly dodged several stray arrows. Meanwhile, the officers huddled together above were unfortunately turned into meat skewers amidst their dying screams.

This was definitely going to be the end, I prayed haphazardly to the gods, but I was dizzy and couldn't remember any of the prayers. I could only shout in my heart that if it could save me, I would hold onto even the devil's hand tightly.

Strangely enough, just as I had this thought, we, who were being tossed around by the punctured balloon, suddenly regained our direction and then, as if possessed, crashed into the crossbow.

The enemy fired several arrows in this direction, but those who were already dead felt no pain even with several large holes in their corpses. The crossbow bolts were ineffective in intercepting them; the balloon's final impact was fierce and powerful. Although the string of people behind it was already dead, it was like a giant hammer, slamming heavily onto the crossbow.

With a loud crash, the crossbow was mostly destroyed. I was secretly pleased, and as I was being dragged over, I kicked it hard, smashing the crossbow into pieces of iron and wood, thus averting the assassination attempt.

(Success!

Joy came with pain. As my speed slowed due to kicking the crossbow mechanism, an enemy beside me slashed at my back, the pain excruciating.

Dizzy from the earlier swaying, I couldn't control the pain and vomited on the enemy's face. Taking advantage of his filthy face and his screams, I drew my Hyakkimaru and killed him with a single blow.

"Boy! You…"

His accomplice drew his sword, but I was pulled away by the ropes on my feet, dodging the attack and flying off the roof, plummeting straight down.

Before falling, I heard a series of screams and caught a glimpse of a tall man in brocade robes wielding a crescent-shaped blade with a string of bells hanging from the hilt. Amidst the jingling bells, his swordsmanship was lightning-fast, swiftly killing the assassin on the roof.)

(What kind of expert is this? Amazing!

The man's attire isn't Alibuda's military uniform; I wonder which country he's from. Is he here to kill the assassin? Or to silence his accomplice who failed in his mission? I only had time to witness this before I was dragged off the balloon by the rope.

The situation was truly dire. If I continued to be carried through the air by this broken balloon, I would surely break my bones in no time. Although I had my sword in hand and could cut the rope, falling from this height was tantamount to suicide.)

(Phoenix, you filthy bitch, you rotten saleswoman, where were you when I needed your help?)

Dizzy and disoriented in mid-air, I suddenly found myself above the manor, with a pond below—likely my last chance to escape. Without hesitation, I aimed and slashed the ropes binding my legs with my sword.

I expected to fall awkwardly into the pond and save my life, but a gust of wind blew me down, and my landing spot became a large banyan tree.

"Ouch! Damn it!"

With that cry, I crashed into the banyan tree's branches, making a series of crackling sounds. My whole body ached terribly; I don't even know how many branches I broke before I finally emerged from the other side.

"Ahhhhhh!"

Dizzy and disoriented, I was utterly dazed. Even the loudest scream wouldn't have been an exaggeration. Tragically, the scream didn't come from me, but from a female official carrying a tea set, who had been crushed by my fall through the tree.

"A lecherous thief! A lecherous thief! Help!"

In my haste, I only vaguely saw her delicate features and some beauty, but my mind quickly cleared. I knew these female officials were from the Golden Flower Federation, and might even have connections to the Palace of Light. Not wanting to offend them, I quickly got up and frantically explained, my mind still foggy.

"Hey! Look carefully, I didn't..."

The moment I stood up, the buttons on my clothes suddenly tightened, followed by the sound of tearing fabric. When I finally saw clearly, I saw a female official pinned beneath me, her legs spread apart by my knees, her skirt lifted—a position that would easily be misinterpreted. Worse still, her upper garment was completely torn, revealing a light blue lace bra and most of her snow-white, round breast.

"Miss, actually I just wanted to..."

"Ah, you lecher!"

If these screams attracted attention, things would be very bad. Therefore, I didn't hesitate to take a risk, covering the female official's mouth with one hand and pressing the Hyakkimaru against her throat.

"Shut up! If you utter another sound, I'll slit your throat right now."

With her mouth covered, the female official couldn't scream, only letting out soft whimpers. I pressed my advantage, threatening, "Don't scream! Let me tell you, there are only the two of us here. Even if you scream your lungs out, no one will hear you."

For a repeat rapist with a long criminal record, these lines were lines I'd said countless times before; I almost let out a sinister grin. The female official, intimidated by my ferocious appearance, dared not scream again, only timidly pointing to her right.

My perverted father once said: bad luck and stupidity are incurable. Just when I had finally, with a near-death experience, bravely dealt with the assassin, I found myself in this awkward situation.

When I turned my head to the right in the direction she was pointing, well… I probably wouldn't have had the chance to open my mouth that wide in my entire life.

Not far to our right, a dozen or so guests, all important figures and ministers from different countries, were picnicking and conversing, carrying silver tableware, accompanied by hundreds of servants and guards. This large group stared at me in utter disbelief, including our King, whose jaw dropped, his astonishment no less than mine. It was only

after a long while that a thunderous roar finally erupted.

"Farrell, what are you doing…you actually…you actually…you traitor to this country! I will have you skinned alive!"

The commander of ten thousand cavalry of a nation had dared to barge in so rudely during the elegant breakfast conversation of ministers from various countries, and even more brazenly, publicly raped and defiled a court lady from a friendly nation… That's a pretty cool charge, isn't it?
