Searching for the Coastline: A Tale of Human Romance

God knows why I took a ship back home; otherwise, I wouldn't have encountered the storm. Losing my life is a small matter; the important thing is that I hadn't even had a chance to fully enjoy life, and I wasn't willing to give up.

The Pearl Cove wasn't one of those giant ships; it traveled between Japan and Hawaii. Since most travel agencies arranged for tourists to fly, there weren't many people on the ship. The ship, which could hold about two thousand passengers, was probably less than a third full, and I was one of those unlucky five hundred or so. Most of them were Chinese.

I don't know what went wrong, but shortly after the storm started, we were told the ship might sink, so in the overwhelming storm and huge waves, everyone frantically scrambled for the lifeboats.

I, on the other hand, remained unusually calm, only regretting that I shouldn't have taken the ship. Damn it, hadn't I had enough of riding in the Marines after four years? I don't know what I was thinking back then, but it was too late to regret it. I looked out the porthole and saw that the ship was already listing. However, based on my military training, I figured it would take some time before it sank, so I decided not to rush to the lifeboats.

I sat on my bunk, enjoying the thrill of being tossed around in the storm, and then calmly stuffed my waterproof backpack with clothes, shoes, medicine, food, water, and so on. It wasn't that I was pessimistic, just in case. When I went out of the cabin, I saw the backpack left by the Japanese couple on the next bunk, and after thinking about it, I took it too. The backpack was large, with plenty of room. I hesitated for a moment, then went to the storage compartment in the small dining room next door and filled it with canned food, biscuits, and bottled water.

Braving the downpour, I staggered to the deck, only to find that there was no one left on board except for some sailors. Looking out to sea, I could vaguely see some lifeboats rocking. Good heavens, all the lifeboats had been lowered! I was terrified and ran frantically towards the aft deck. Thankfully, there were still two lifeboats about to be launched into the sea.

"Wait for me!" I shouted as I ran, but a man on one of the lifeboats blocked my way: "There's no room. Go take that boat!" I looked at the other boat and saw that it was full of people in crew uniforms. Considering that each lifeboat had 30 seats, and thinking about the crew on the foredeck, it was already overcrowded. I looked at the boat the man in front of me was on; it wasn't even half full. So I pushed him aside and jumped on.

Several crew members began launching our small boat into the sea. One crew member took off his life jacket and threw it to me, then waved to us: "Good luck!"

By the time our boat was in the sea, the storm had almost subsided, and the waves had calmed down considerably. I felt extremely tired, so I hugged my backpack tightly and drifted off to sleep...

I don't know how long I slept, but I was awakened by the bright sunlight. I squinted and looked around. The sea was as calm as a sheet of glass… But where were the other ships? Why were we the only boat here…?

“Where am I?!” I panicked. Had we left the area where the ship wrecked? Or had the other ships left? “Where are the other ships? Why are we the only ones left…” I shouted.

“Tch…” A cold laugh came from behind me. I looked in the direction of the sound and saw the man who had stopped me from boarding the boat yesterday. A pretty woman was nestled tightly in his arms, looking at me with disdain.

“Speak up! Where are the other ships?” I continued to shout. “Have we left the area where the ship wrecked?”

No one answered me. I looked around at the people on the boat. There were eight women and three men, including myself. I remembered those who had gone missing in previous shipwrecks. It was because they left the area that the rescue teams could no longer find them. The currents of the Pacific Ocean could carry us hundreds of nautical miles away overnight! If that were the case, we would really be… [completely gone].

"Tell me! Tell me!" I almost cried. It seemed my appearance only made them more contemptuous; even the girl nestled in a young woman's arms looked at me with disdain.

I gave a bitter smile, knowing I had to find the answer myself. I went to the stern and touched the engine—it was scorching hot. I opened the fuel tank; it was empty. It seemed we had indeed left that area. Heaven knows how far we were from the crash site. I looked at the lifeboat's storage compartment; fresh water, biscuits, spare fuel, a GPS tracker, and the radio that should have been there were all gone. My body went limp. Was there nothing left on this lifeboat? [Full text]...

Suddenly, I noticed the man was holding a water bottle with the words "Pearl Bay" printed on it. I perked up and rushed over: "Where are the life-saving supplies on the boat?"

The man hid the water bottle behind his back: "Sorry, there's nothing."

"I don't want water, I want to know where everything went? The radio, the locator, the nautical charts, where did they all go?"

The man froze, his facial muscles twitching slightly: "You mean... those things were in that box?"

"What, you know? Where's that box?"

"I... I thought it was all useless... I threw it all away..."

I felt utterly hopeless, my body limp as I scrambled back to the stern and sat down, hugging my knees: "[Full text]... [Full text]..."

Just like before, the boat was calm, except everyone's face was deathly pale. I weakly looked up and asked: "Who's driving the boat?"

"It's... it's me..." another man answered softly.

"How long have you been sailing?"

"I don't know... Yesterday someone tried to climb onto our boat... The ship is sinking... I just kept sailing until we ran out of fuel." They

're just waiting to die. I had nothing more to say, and I didn't want to stay with these foolish men and women, so I sat alone at the stern, draped a garment over my head, and closed my eyes to rest. I don't know how much time passed, but I heard the sounds of chewing and drinking. I opened my eyes and saw these people eating and drinking. Seeing me open my eyes, each of them turned slightly, clutching their food and water tightly, as if afraid I would take them. I sneered and closed my eyes again.

I had food and fresh water in my backpack, but I could hold on for now; I wouldn't touch these life-saving supplies until the very last moment. With their unrestrained eating and drinking, they wouldn't last long [the rest of the text is missing], and then they'd just be waiting to die. Thinking about how people can go crazy for survival, I secretly pulled out the M9 (a standard US military bayonet) I'd bought in Honolulu from my backpack and tucked it into my coat. Damn it, I wouldn't hesitate to kill if necessary.

I was unbearably thirsty and took my first sip of water in the middle of the night, knowing their fresh water and food were almost gone.

The next day, no one uttered a word. Seeing me lying motionless like a dead man at the stern, no one paid me any attention, no one offered me a drop of water or a bite to eat. I sneered, thinking, "This is human nature. When it comes to their own fundamental interests, no one cares about the lives of others." By nightfall, their water and food were gone.

On the third day, everyone looked weak and listless, lying there suffering from hunger and thirst. I also endured my thirst, only eating a little and drinking a sip of water when they weren't looking.

On the morning of the fourth day, I secretly ate my third biscuit and drank some water to moisten my throat. Just as I was about to close my eyes and rest again, the man who had thrown away his life jacket suddenly lunged at me: "He has water!"

This caused chaos on the boat; another man and several women who looked extremely vicious also joined the fray. I kicked the guy in the stomach, then pulled my M9 from my pocket and pointed it at his throat: "You want to die?!"

Another young man, seemingly driven mad by thirst, lunged forward despite the threat of the bayonet. I showed no mercy, plunging my knife into his thigh. Amidst the two men's piercing screams, the others retreated, obediently returning to their original positions, watching the two howling, struggling men in horror.

I tore a strip of cloth from the stabbed man's clothes and tied it around his groin, then took out a bottle of styptic medicine from my bag, poured some onto his wound, bandaged it, and returned to the stern to sit down again: "Don't mess with me, damn it, why didn't you remember me when you were dividing the spoils?"

Just then, a hoarse voice came: "Mom… I'm thirsty…" I looked over; it was the girl who had been huddled in the young woman's arms. Her lips were cracked, and she looked extremely weak, while the beautiful young woman didn't seem much better.

A pang of pity struck me. Considering they hadn't tried to attack me, I decided to help them; after all, I still had plenty of water. Thinking of this, I beckoned to the two women, "Come here."

The young woman's face turned deathly pale at my call, as if she thought I was going to rape them. I shook my head, "Here's some water for you. Bring the bottle over." The young woman perked up at this and hurriedly dragged the girl over.

I had them sit down beside me, then took the bottle from their hands, poured some water from my kettle into it, and gave them some biscuits. The young woman took the bottle, drank a swig herself, and then handed the bottle to the girl, who took it and drank it down in large gulps. I snatched the bottle away, "If you keep drinking like this, you won't last long." Then I gave the bottle to the young woman, "Drink only when you really can't take it anymore. Just drink a little at a time to moisten your throat, otherwise you and your daughter won't live much longer."

The young woman nodded, "Thank you... thank you." I glanced at the others whose eyes showed greed and despair, thinking it best to be careful. After tightly binding my hands and the dagger together with a strip of cloth, I closed my eyes to rest again.

"What are you doing?!" I was startled awake by the noise and saw the man who had dropped his life-saving equipment snatching the water bottle from the young woman's hand and gulping it down. The young woman beside him was scratching at his body and face like a madwoman: "Give me back my water!!"

The man's female companion clung tightly to his arm: "Hui...please give me a sip, I'm dying of thirst..."

The man kicked both women away: "Get out!! Get out!!"
