Fudan University professor promotes polygamy (one wife, two husbands)

A Fudan University professor suggested a "one wife, multiple husbands" system to solve the problem of 30 million bachelors. Is this feasible?

(Original emotional essay by Hu Yang Yingyue, published on
DaYuhao , 7 hours ago) China, with its millennia-old Confucian culture as its foundation, has deeply ingrained concepts of propriety, righteousness, integrity, and shame in its people. Furthermore, the traditional view that only boys can "carry on the family line" has a profound influence, leading to today's gender imbalance. According to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics, by the end of 2019, China's (mainland) total population had exceeded 1.4 billion. Of these, 715.27 million were male and 684.78 million were female. Clearly, there are 30 million more men than women. This means that under the current "one husband, one wife" marriage system, finding wives will become a significant challenge for these 30 million men. Given this severe gender imbalance, Huang Youguang, a distinguished professor at the School of Economics of Fudan University and an academician of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences, proposed implementing a polyandrous system to address the potential problem of 30 million men not being able to find wives in the future. This suggestion immediately sparked a huge controversy online. There were supporters and opponents, but the opposition clearly constituted the vast majority. Personally, I also oppose it! I wonder if Professor Huang considered this question when proposing this suggestion: If this suggestion were adopted, where would our "moral values" be placed? Admittedly, we see that there are still countries in the world with polyandrous systems. For example, India, Nepal, Uganda, and Libya still have this marriage system. Even the recently deceased Macau gambling tycoon Stanley Ho had four wives. However, these are all outdated phenomena of social progress! Although some countries maintain a polyandrous marriage system, and this system is indeed used in these countries to address the practical problem of a male-dominated society where men cannot find wives. However, we should also recognize that the vast majority of countries worldwide practice monogamy, including China, Japan, South Korea, and economically developed Western countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Is polyandry truly feasible in China? Is it grounded in reality? Does it contradict our cultural heritage? Has the cultural context of Confucianism been considered? Has the moral compass of our people been taken into account? China is a land of etiquette and morality. Since ancient times, the uniqueness of love has been a source of reverence for love and marriage in the hearts of the Chinese people. Whether man or woman, almost everyone in China believes that love is selfish; no one truly wants to share their lover—this has become a hallmark of our Chinese civilization! Furthermore, for women, polyandry would be disrespectful, and they would not accept being reduced to a tool for physical needs. For men, due to our traditional culture, very few would accept such a marriage system. Furthermore, this could potentially lead to even more social problems. Moreover, even if a polyandrous marriage system were implemented, it might not truly solve China's gender imbalance problem—the prevailing notion that men are solely responsible for carrying on the family line remains unchanged, and the desire to have sons will perpetually perpetuate the gender imbalance with more men than women. Therefore, using a polyandrous marriage system to address the impending problem of 30 million single men is clearly a superficial solution and not advisable. Regarding the gender imbalance, economist Ren Zeping has proposed a solution: "Prioritize the introduction of young, single foreign women to solve China's gender imbalance problem." I agree with this suggestion. In recent years, we have observed an increasing number of women from Vietnam, Myanmar, and even Ukraine marrying Chinese men. Everyone knows that Ukraine is known for its beautiful women, and that there are more women than men in the country. Why not consider inter-national marriages? This could solve China's problem of 30 million single men and potentially foster closer ties between nations—a win-win situation!
