Lifestyle - Partner Swapping

I. Translation and Definition of English Terminology
In English literature, mate swapping or swinging is more appropriately translated as "换偶" (huànǒu). Previous expressions like "***" (mào yǒu) are inaccurate because both partners participate in the swapping activity, and "***" reflects the male's dominant and controlling perspective.
German sexologist Heinrich Heinrich defines swapping as: "'Swingers' are adults who mutually consent to share sexual activity for recreational purposes. In practice, this means two or more heterosexual couples mutually consenting to have sexual intercourse with each other's partners, or sharing sexual partners at home, in special clubs, or other meeting places."
Swapping has emerged in Chinese society in recent years, but academic surveys and research on it are completely lacking. Research on swapping in Western societies reached its peak in the 1960s and 70s. Although culturally different, Chinese and Western swappers share a fundamental commonality—swapping. This article reviews English-language research on swapping to provide some understanding of this group and related research.
II. Swapping and its Rules
During the height of the sexual revolution in the West in the 1960s, swapping became a social phenomenon. In American studies, Bartell estimated in 1971 that 1% of the total population participated in swapping (Bartell, 1971), while Hunt estimated in 1974 that 2% of men and less than 2% of women had consented to it (Hunt, 1974). In 1997, scholars conducted telephone interviews with members of the North American Swapping Club Alliance and found a significant increase in swappers over the past decade; the alliance had 12,000 members in 1987 and 30,000 in 1997. The number of swappers continues to grow, and the internet has greatly facilitated this group. Previously, they mainly obtained information by purchasing swapping magazines, but now they can conveniently access the information they need online from home without having to go to a bookstore.
Swapping partners have their own organizations, such as the North American Swing Club Association (NASCA) and the Equal Opportunity Lifestyle Organization (EOLO), among other well-known groups. Their membership is open to all races. Surveys show that there were 200 swinging clubs in the US in the late 1980s, and 400 in the late 1990s. These clubs are more active in their services and activities, advertising and offering a variety of services to their members. Different
clubs have different rules. Some are only open to couples. Some are open to couples and selected singles. Some are open to single women, some to singles over 21, and some require single men to be over 21 and single women and couples to be over 18. Some require membership, some do not. Some clubs only accept single men when hosting salons in their own homes. Some clubs are open to singles on certain days and only to couples on others. Some of these clubs, founded in the 1960s, are still active today.
There are also some well-known social events in the swapping community, where couples can meet and develop relationships. For example, the "Lifestyles Convention," which held its first event in 1973 with over 200 participants, had grown to over 6,000 by its 28th edition. Held annually in the summer, it is the world's largest and most famous swapping convention. This convention is only open to legally married couples. The North American Swapping Clubs Association's annual meeting attracts 900-1000 couples from across the country, and this number continues to grow. Such events alone brought in $1.6 million in local revenue for Chicago in 1997 (Richard J Jenks, 1998: 518-519). Similar events exist elsewhere, such as "Miami in May," which attracts three to four hundred participants each time. Other well-known swinger events include: N'awlinsin November, Canana's international XXX-tasy convention, The Chicago adventure & erotic fair, Enticeconvention, Annual swinging campouts, etc.
III. Forms of Swapping
: Open Swapping: Sexual intercourse occurs in the same room, usually involving two or three couples, and may also include single individuals. Participants enjoy seeing their spouse having sex with others, and also having themselves and their spouses seen by others, finding it very exciting. It is even more popular if the woman is bisexual, as she can have sex with everyone present simultaneously. Swappers encourage women to be bisexual.
Closed Swapping: Exchanging partners and having sex in different rooms. This is more relaxing, as one doesn't have to watch their partner have sex with others. This isolation is especially beneficial when there is jealousy.
Group Swapping: Three or more couples have sex together, usually in one or two rooms. Some people really enjoy seeing themselves satisfy multiple people in one night.
Soft swinging: Participants enjoy watching other couples have sex, or allowing others to see them having sex with their spouse, without necessarily engaging in sexual intercourse with other spouses present. This also includes mutual masturbation or oral sex with others present, but at least some do not have sexual intercourse. Especially under the threat of AIDS, this method is seen as a way to share sexual passion with many people without directly engaging in intercourse, thus avoiding the risk of AIDS.
Swinging single: One spouse engages in sex with another person, while the other spouse does not participate. However, the other spouse is aware of the entire situation. Some may feel it is more like open marriage. Sometimes one spouse has a physiological problem, sometimes one spouse is not interested, especially the wife, who agrees to her husband's participation. (Patti Thomas, 1997: 19-21)
As we mentioned earlier, bisexual women are common and welcome in swinging. However, bisexual husbands can be a problem. These bisexual men also crave to see or touch other men's bodies, and many couples refuse to participate upon learning that the other spouse's husband is bisexual. (Patti Thomas, 1997: 27-31) This is clearly because men's fear of homosexuality is far greater than women's, and women are more accepting of same-sex intimacy.
Some women also want to be the center of attention for many men, which leads to some single women joining swapping, but their numbers are very small, although they are very popular, especially bisexual single women. In many Western countries, swapping magazines are usually placed in adult bookstores, which women rarely visit, which may be one reason why single women are less likely to join swapping. The widespread use of the internet has changed this to some extent.
There are many single men who desire to engage in sexual relationships with other couples, partly because many men cannot persuade their wives to participate in such activities, and partly because many men have double standards: they can be promiscuous outside the marriage, while their wives must remain chaste at home. Even the thought that their wives might have such desires feels like an insult to them. Some men participate in swapping themselves, but on the other hand, they consider women who swap partners to be promiscuous. Single men who want to participate in swapping are relatively easy to find, so the competition is fierce, and when couples want to accept single men, they will carefully select them. One unwritten rule among partner swappers is that if a single man is chosen, he must be extra careful to manage his relationship with the husband in the other couple. He should respect the husband and follow his lead in the bedroom.
Swappers are not open to sexual relationships with just anyone; they are selective. They primarily meet like-minded individuals through advertisements and by posting their own. They carefully select potential partners, excluding single individuals, and clearly state their requirements. In the United States, many newspapers and magazines offer this service, and there are also dedicated swapping magazines.
