Chapter Ten: The Fleeting Love is Too Absurd – Dreams of Truth and Falsehood, the Mortal World is Full of Changes, Pity for the Dead and Pity for the Living. It is said that Emperor Shao requested Yan Daoyu to meet the Golden Mother of the Nine Heavens in a dream. Daoyu replied, “Your Majesty has commanded, and I, your humble servant, shall comply. I only hope that Your Majesty will stay alone in the palace, not allowing anyone to linger, lest you offend the Golden Mother, and I will suffer the consequences.” Seeing Daoyu’s unwavering refusal, Emperor Shao was overjoyed and said, “Tonight, thanks to the divine power of the Master, I was able to meet the Golden Mother of the Nine Heavens in a dream. I will reward you handsomely.” Daoyu then seized the opportunity to ask, “I dare not accept any other treasures or gold and silver. I only ask that Your Majesty bestow upon me a pair of bright jade lions that will last all night. I will already be deeply grateful.” Emperor Shao granted Daoyu’s request, and then, with the parrot, withdrew from the Zhengqian Taoist Temple, left the Imperial Garden, and returned to the palace. Emperor Shao wished night would fall immediately. Finally, as the sun began to set and the moon rose, he entered his bedchamber alone, forbidding all palace maids and eunuchs from attending to him. He climbed onto his dragon bed, fully clothed, and closed his eyes, hoping to fall asleep immediately. However, the more he tried to sleep, the more restless he became. He tossed and turned, unable to close his eyes, his heart filled with anxiety, unable to find rest. He heard the palace drums beat loudly for the second time, and the moon, seemingly affectionate, seemed to want to sneak in and spy on him. Emperor Shao couldn't help but sigh, "The tale of the goddess meeting King Xiang, the lovemaking at Wushan, is probably just talk." He lingered in despair for a while, gradually becoming somewhat delirious.
In his dazed state, he suddenly felt a rich fragrance, neither orchid nor musk, wafting directly to his head. Emperor Shao's thoughts grew increasingly hazy. Suddenly, he heard a cry of "Your Majesty has arrived!" Opening his eyes, he saw before the dragon bed a graceful figure with eyebrows like spring mountains, eyes like autumn waters, a slender waist, and jet-black hair. A hint of red peeked from beneath her skirt, and she held a cloud-shaped whisk in her hand—the Nine Heavens Golden Mother Goddess. She smiled, revealing two dimples, and emitted a strange fragrance that was intoxicating. At that moment, the lustful and womanizing Emperor Shao was completely aroused, unable to sit up. The Golden Mother Goddess parted her lips slightly and said, "Master Yan, in your ritual, earnestly requested that Emperor Liu Shao of Song sincerely wish to meet me. I already knew of this. Normally, humans and gods are separated, and I should not easily descend to the mortal realm, lest I incur divine punishment. However, because you and I share a predestined encounter, I have answered your call tonight. After this, we will have no further chance to meet. I hope you will instruct Master Yan not to request me again. If he disobeys, he will surely be punished by heaven." Having said this, she gracefully sat on the dragon bed. Emperor Shao kowtowed on his pillow, saying, "Once is too much; how can it be repeated? I will respectfully obey your decree and dare not offend Your Majesty again." The Golden Mother Goddess of the Nine Heavens chuckled softly, then embraced him, ending the predestined encounter she spoke of. I won't go into detail about her and Emperor Shao's amorous encounter; I'll just use the old cliché of "like fish in water" and "
inseparable as glue" to describe it briefly. The readers are all discerning; they already know that the goddess of this night's passionate encounter wasn't some celestial mother, but rather Yan Daoyu's goddaughter. However, this daughter's origins need some explanation. It turns out that the imposter goddess's surname was Lu, and her name was Qinghong. Originally from Yangzhou, she was only eighteen years old, possessing a captivating and alluring beauty. Her alluring figure was considered the most beautiful in Yangzhou, enough to bewitch any playboy. Her father was Lu Bingnan, and her mother, Wu, had long since passed away. Bingnan didn't remarry and raised Qinghong until she was fifteen, when he too died. His beautiful daughter was then sold into a brothel by a distant, rogue uncle. Qinghong had no choice but to endure the hardships, learning to play the pipa and sing beautifully. Her beauty was already striking, and coupled with her talent for playing musical instruments and singing, how could she not be captivating? Before long, the area under the cherry blossoms was teeming with courtesans, attracting the attention of the entire prefecture. However, she remained chaste, refusing to allow any advances to cross her path. The madam, relying on her as a source of income, dared not pressure her, allowing her to choose her ideal husband first.
One day, a young gentleman arrived. Following custom, he described this man as handsome as Pan An, with the spirit of Song Yu, and possessing a gentle and refined character, free from any airs of nobility. Upon seeing him, Qinghong was immediately smitten; this was the man she could entrust her life to. She
immediately treated him with great hospitality and flattery. Inquiring about his family background, she learned his surname was Sima, his given name was Jing, and he was a distant descendant of the fallen Jin dynasty emperor. Qinghong felt an extraordinary tenderness towards him and kept the young master Sima that very night. Their love was sealed in a single night, a vow made for three lifetimes.
Soon after, Sima Jing removed Qinghong from her social status and took her home. However, Sima Jing already had a first wife, Liu, who was a notorious womanizer. Sima Jing, however, treated her like a concubine. Once in his home, Qinghong suffered daily abuse from Liu. Unable to endure the torment, Qinghong secretly escaped. Poor little girl with bound feet, she couldn't possibly travel such a long distance. Reaching a large river, she considered jumping in. But in a flash, her slender waist was grabbed by two hands. Turning around, she saw another woman.
Seeing Qinghong's beautiful appearance, the woman felt great pity and said, "Young lady, how can you bear to die as a fish? If you have any grievances, tell me. We are both women, so it's alright to talk. Perhaps I can help you." Qinghong thanked her tearfully, and they sat together on the riverbank, where she recounted her story. The woman laughed heartily, "Young lady, you are mistaken. If this place doesn't take you, there are plenty of other places that will. With your beautiful face, it would be a waste for you to jump into the river. My name is Yan Daoyu. If you don't mind my humble name, why not become my goddaughter?" Qinghong had heard that Yan Daoyu was a famous witch, and now that she had nowhere to turn, she heard that she was willing to be taken in as a goddaughter. So she knelt down and called out sweetly, "Godmother!" Daoyu was overjoyed and took her home. That's how Qinghong came to be.
Now, let's get back to the original text. That night, Emperor Shao entered his bedchamber, but the parrot grew anxious and rushed to Yan Daoyu, asking, "Old woman, what kind of magic have you used to allow His Majesty to meet with the Golden Mother of the Nine Heavens?" Daoyu didn't hide anything from the parrot and told her everything. Daoyu's initial intention was to allow Qinghong to meet with Emperor Shao frequently, but the parrot objected, only allowing it once and forbidding it from happening again. Daoyu knew the parrot was jealous and feared Emperor Shao would bewitch Qinghong, causing her to fall out of favor, so Daoyu had no choice but to reluctantly agree.
He then taught Qinghong a magic spell, promising only a one-night stand, thus preventing trouble for Emperor Shao and avoiding the parrot's displeasure. That night, Qinghong dressed up, and around midnight, she and Yan Daoyu quietly slipped into the bedchamber. Daoyu used a secret, bewitching incense to diffuse the scent—the same strong fragrance Emperor Shao had initially smelled. Emperor Shao was in a daze, as if in a dream. This act was to make him believe it was a dream rendezvous. After Emperor Shao and Qinghong had enjoyed a blissful moment together, Emperor Shao, exhausted, fell into a deep sleep. Qinghong, however, quietly got up and left the bedchamber. When Emperor Shao awoke from his dream, the goddess beside him had vanished without a trace, further convincing him it was a dream rendezvous. Upon getting up, Daoyu asked, "Your Majesty, did you meet the Nine Heavens Golden Mother Goddess last night?" Emperor Shao laughed and said, "The divine master's magic is indeed powerful." He then recounted everything the goddess had said. Daoyu feigned surprise and said, "It seems I must be more careful in the future." Emperor Shao then bestowed a pair of bright jade lions upon Daoyu as a reward for his service. Thus, Emperor Shao never realized the truth of the matter, while they secretly laughed at him behind his back—but that's another story.
Now, let's talk about Qinghong. She originally intended to rely on her beauty to gain favor and become a favored concubine.
However, Daoyu, fearing that the parrot would expose his true intentions and backfire, allowed Qinghong to have a night of pleasure with him. At the time, Qinghong was only acting out of consideration for her godmother; a woman's heart is ultimately much narrower. Afterwards, Qinghong reflected on it and became increasingly resentful, harboring hatred for the parrot. She frequently expressed her grievances to Daoyu. Daoyu knew Qinghong was wronged, but since she and the parrot were like arms linked, he couldn't help Qinghong or overthrow the parrot. He could only offer empty words of comfort, telling her to be patient and that they would discuss things further when the opportunity arose.
Qinghong, being so clever, saw through Daoyu's intentions. She thought to herself, "If my godmother won't help me, surely I can figure something out myself! I won't let this lowly parrot get away with this!" However, being young and inexperienced, Qinghong lacked shrewdness and her thoughts often slipped out. Soon, the parrot overheard this and flew into a rage, demanding that Daoyu immediately banish Qinghong from the palace. Seeing the parrot's genuine anger, Daoyu found herself in a difficult position. If she obeyed and banished Qinghong, there was no guarantee she wouldn't expose their affair. If she refused, she feared further trouble. Therefore, Daoyu was speechless upon hearing the parrot's words. Seeing Daoyu's expression, the parrot became even more displeased and said, "I understand now. She's your goddaughter. I've come to the wrong place; I shouldn't have told you." Daoyu, realizing the parrot had misunderstood her, quickly explained her predicament. The parrot listened and, finding it plausible, pondered for a moment before saying, "You said you'd expel her, fearing she'd expose our secret. But given her behavior these past few days, isn't there any danger in keeping her in the palace?" This remark reminded Daoyu, who frowned and said, "This child, I've spoiled her for nothing. If it's for our safety, we can't keep her." The parrot clapped her hands and said, "You're awake now! We shouldn't ruin our years of friendship for her sake." Provoked by the parrot, Daoyu resolutely said, "I can't worry about her anymore. I have my own way of dealing with her." She then whispered something in her ear, and the parrot left happily.
That evening, Daoyu summoned Qinghong to her bedroom and said, "Congratulations, goddaughter." Qinghong was quite surprised and said, "Godmother, have you gone mad? What is there to congratulate me on?" Daoyu laughed and said, "Silly child, you don't know the truth. His Majesty listened to what Consort Parrot said and is going to bestow upon you the title of Consort. Tonight, His Majesty will be making love with you again." Qinghong felt ashamed upon hearing this, but still refused to believe it: "The parrot is wary of me. How could she say anything about me in front of His Majesty? Godmother must be joking with me." Daoyu said seriously, "It is indeed true, not a joke. Tonight at the second watch, you can still dress up as the Nine Heavens Golden Mother and go to the bedchamber. His Majesty will still be waiting for you there alone." Qinghong, unaware of the trap, was overjoyed. At the second watch of the night, she disguised herself as the Golden Mother Goddess and went to the imperial bedchamber. Sure enough, she saw Emperor Shao sitting swaying on the dragon bed. Qinghong walked gracefully over, but when Emperor Shao saw her approaching, he roared and with a flick of his wrist, a Longquan sword had already slashed across Qinghong's fair neck, and the beautiful woman died instantly.
That night, when Emperor Shao returned to the palace, the parrot told him, "The divine master instructed me to inform Your Majesty that last night she dreamt of the Golden Mother of the Nine Heavens, who told her, 'At the second watch tonight, a demon will transform into my form to bewitch the Song Emperor. You should inform Liu Shao and tell him to wait for the demon to arrive and then kill him unexpectedly to prevent future troubles.' Therefore, the divine master told me this and instructed me to inform Your Majesty to be careful tonight." Emperor Shao was furious upon hearing this and said, "What kind of demon dares to transform into the Golden Mother of the Nine Heavens and try to bewitch me? I will not rest until I kill it!" Emperor Shao then secretly hid the Longquan sword in his bedchamber to await the demon's arrival. Poor Qinghong, she never imagined in her dream that her godmother, who had saved her life, would still take her own. Truly, love can make one wish for life, and hatred can make one wish for death. Even Emperor Shao remained completely unaware, never imagining that the demon he had slain was none other than the Nine Heavens Golden Mother Goddess he had met in his dream. Both sides had fallen for Dao Yu and the parrot's treacherous scheme. Truly: "Before the rain and dew fall, the arrow dies; often, beauty's tears fill her lapel."
