However, since it hadn't been discussed in terms of marriage, he dared not casually approach her. He feared that a merchant from afar, even if cured, might only offer money and silk, not necessarily his daughter. Therefore, he kept his plans secret, quietly considering the matter. Indeed, the illness remained uncured, and the notice was changed, now offering a cure and a son-in-law.
Cheng Feng clapped his hands and exclaimed, "This time, I've got my wife!" He immediately went to tear down the notice at the door, claiming he could cure her.
The gatekeeper, hearing this, dared not delay and immediately rushed in to greet him. Zhang Shaoqing came out to meet Cheng Feng and, seeing his unusual appearance, was immediately taken aback. He then asked, "What miraculous remedy do you have? Can it cure this?"
Cheng Feng replied, "I am not a physician by profession, but I once encountered a strange person who gave me a miraculous herb that can cure leprosy. It can cure the disease instantly. However, I am not interested in money or wealth; I only wish to fulfill the promise made on the list. I will certainly do my best."
Zhang Shaoqing said, "I have only this beloved daughter, who is virtuous and beautiful. Unfortunately, she suddenly contracted this disease and has become a cripple.
If I could use my miraculous skills to bring her back to life, how could I possibly live up to the promise made on the list? I would gladly offer my daughter to serve me for the rest of my life."
Cheng Feng said, "I am a traveler from Zhejiang, far from home, and a merchant. I am not versed in Confucian studies. I am afraid of being implicated in her family's ways. I was willing to give her my daughter away so easily because she recovered from her illness. If she were to recover and restore the family's health, I might regret it." "My hopes, my humble servant, are surely dashed by this fleeting moment. There's no need to explain further."
Shaoqing said, "Jiangsu and Zhejiang are renowned lands, not foreign places. Doing business here is a virtuous profession, not the work of thieves. Judging from your appearance, you are not of lowly status. Moreover, as I have already stated, I have no regard for social standing or rank. As long as you can cure her, I will respectfully serve you. How could I possibly do anything untrustworthy for a sick girl? Please just use the medicine and do not doubt me!"
Seeing that what Cheng Feng said was true, he ordered the bundle of herbs to be boiled into a decoction for the young lady to bathe in. The young lady smelled the fragrance of the herbs and felt refreshed. When she entered the bathtub and bathed her whole body, the heat was intense, but wherever the water touched, the pain and itching disappeared, leaving a refreshing coolness that penetrated to the bone.
The young lady washed away the pus and grime, and after stepping out of the bath, she felt half-relieved. Zhang Shaoqing was overjoyed and inquired about Cheng Feng's whereabouts. It turned out he was staying at his family's inn. He immediately sent someone to invite Cheng Feng to his home, cleaned his study for him, and arranged for the young lady to marry him on an auspicious day.
Cheng Feng was overjoyed and moved his belongings from the large inn to the study, awaiting the auspicious day. The young lady was grateful to Cheng Feng for curing her illness. Hearing that she was to marry him, she was willing, but wondered what kind of person he was. So she asked her maid, Meixiang, to inquire.
She discovered that he was the owner of a silk shop that had once sold silk to her family, and she recognized him. He was handsome, and she felt reassured. The auspicious day arrived, and Zhang Shaoqing, true to his word, insisted on the marriage.
Both young men were beautiful, and it goes without saying that they were attracted to each other. However, before Cheng Feng was married, a fox spirit disguised herself as him, and after spending a lot of time with her, she turned out to be someone he knew well.
One day, Miss Zhang said, "You're from somewhere else, what power do you have to come to my house? Heaven caused me to fall ill, and to bring about this marriage, that magic remedy; it was the matchmaker who gave it to you, don't forget."
Cheng Feng said, "There was a matchmaker, but I haven't thanked anyone else yet."
Miss Zhang said, "Tell me who it was? Where is she now?"
Cheng Feng couldn't say it was a fox spirit, so he lied and said, "I once glimpsed your beautiful face, and I longed for you day and night, losing my appetite and sleep. My sincerity moved a fairy who impersonated you and visited me for a long time. Later, I saw through her, and she just said that she wasn't the real you, and that you were in trouble. She gave me a bundle of grass to save you, saying that we were destined to be together. Now it has come true, isn't she a matchmaker?"
Miss Zhang said, "No wonder you seem like an old acquaintance. So someone impersonated me, where is she now?"
Cheng Feng said, "She was a fairy. Once she was exposed, she stopped coming.

Chapter Eleven: Suffering in the Cold Night for the Sake of Livelihood. The poem reads:

Now, Zhang Shaoqing's daughter, Zhang Yunrong, was cured by Cheng Feng, and they were thus betrothed. Miss Yunrong was overjoyed and deeply grateful to the fairy who acted as matchmaker, saying, "She has ruined my reputation. Yet, she saved my life and brought us together; I am now her benefactor."

Miss Yunrong said, "Husband and wife shouldn't speak like that. Saying I am a dying person, and that your miraculous healing is a great kindness, is something I should do to serve my husband. I have no regrets!"
Cheng Feng's companions, hearing that he had married into Zhang Shaoqing's family, were mostly unaware of the reason. Only Xia Liangce had heard Cheng Feng speak of Miss Zhang, later saying it was a demon's imposter, but now seeing him truly as a son-in-law, he still didn't understand the details.

The Cheng brothers, having lost their capital, feared being ridiculed upon their return. Ashamed and weeping, they had no face to see their elders in Jiangdong and abandoned their homeland.
In Huizhou, there were ordinary merchants who ran large shops in Liaoyang. The Cheng brothers, being seasoned businessmen, were skilled in accounting and calculating profits and losses—abilities most valuable to merchants. Lacking
their own capital, they were hired by someone to manage the accounts. The people of Huizhou called them "Second Masters of Accounting." The brothers, being merchants, worked in the shop during the day, but slept in their rented quarters at night.
The quarters consisted of two rooms, one for each brother, separated only by a single plank wall. Living outside was cramped, like innkeeping; what comfort was there? But they had no choice but to make do.
Cheng Feng, while conducting business, also traveled to and from the Zhang family, and would occasionally spend several days with Yun Rong.
Several years passed in this way. That year, in the autumn of the year Wuyin, the weather in the border region was already cold. One night, a sudden frost struck. Cheng Feng and his brother, each in their own room, were wrapped in blankets on their beds, ready to lie down.
Because of the pervasive cold, Cheng Feng couldn't sleep, tossing and turning, his longing for home growing stronger. He could only put his clothes back on, sit on the bed, and sigh several times, thinking that in such a desolate state, it would be better to die sooner rather than later.
At this time, the lamp and candle had gone out, and there was no moon; he was suffering in the cold darkness. Suddenly, the room was filled with light, as if it were daytime, and every detail of the objects in the room was clearly visible.
Cheng Feng was puzzled, but then he smelled a strange fragrance that filled the room, and there was no sound of wind or rain; it was suddenly warm, like the weather in Jiangnan in February or March.
Cheng Feng became more and more alarmed, thinking, "Could I be dreaming?" He couldn't help but go outside to see what was going on.
He had his clothes on, and he quickly jumped out of bed, went to the door, and opened it to look. He saw that it was windy and rainy outside, and unbearably cold. He hurriedly ran out, and as soon as he opened the door, it was the same scene as before: the room was dark, a completely different place.
Cheng Feng said, "This must be strange." He was terrified and dared not move, only shouting loudly from his bed. His brother, Duan Jianzhi, was separated by a wall; no matter how loudly he shouted, he wouldn't be allowed a sound.

We were once in the same boat in Wu and Yue, yet I still yearn for her;
how much more so when I meet a celestial being separated by a brocade screen; if only we could meet in the Jade Capital, I would follow the phoenix and crane into the azure sky." Now, Cheng Feng's room suddenly became incredibly warm. Terrified, he panicked and, having no other choice, burrowed under the covers, pulling them tightly over his head, and lay facing the wall to avoid seeing anything. Even
so, he was fully aware and could hear the distant sounds of carriages and horses, and the continuous playing of string and wind instruments, coming from the southwest.
They approached, and in a short while, they entered the room. Cheng Feng quietly lifted the corner of the quilt, peeking out with his eyes. He saw three beautiful women, with rosy cheeks and green hair, bright eyes and white teeth, adorned in elaborate headdresses and robes, resembling imperial concubines in a painting. They were covered in gold, jade, and pearls, their brilliance dazzling. Their beauty and grace were such that one was like a celestial being, unlike any mortal, and they appeared to be only in their early twenties.
He also saw several maids in front and behind, all exceptionally beautiful, each with their own duties and lined up in their respective groups. Some
carried stoves, some waved fans; some held canopies, some wielded swords; some held scepters, some carried zithers; some held candles, some carried books; some carried jewels, some carried banners; some wrapped quilts around their waists, some held towels; some served dishes, some held ruyi scepters; some held combs, some arranged screens; some set up tables and mats, some played music.
Although they were numerous and varied, they remained solemn and unified. In this single room, there were hundreds of attendants.
"You're mistaken, sir. How big can this empty room be to hold hundreds of people? If everyone walked out through this door, it would take one or two rows of people to get through, and the room would collapse from the crowd. But
, dear reader, is that not the case? Have you ever read the Vimalakirti Sutra? When Vimalakirti arrived at the celestial realm, all the great beings were inside, and it could even hold 108,000 lions. Could it be that the central area could see everything? It was nothing more than a manifestation of supernatural powers. Now, this room is limited, but the darkness within is endless. It's like a mirror—how big can it be? It reflects endless phenomena. This is just an illusion, which is why nine hundred groups can be present all at once. They didn't actually leave one or two at a time through the door.
Enough of this digression, let's get to the point." One of the three beauties, the more cunning one, walked to the bedside, stroked Cheng Feng's body for a while, and then spoke softly, "Is he really fast asleep? I have no intention of harming anyone."

collapsed hearth, a row of broken bottles and jars; it resembled an ancient temple without incense, or a dirty prison cell.
Cheng Feng, bewildered, exclaimed, "Could it be a dream?" He focused his gaze, recalling the exquisite food and drink, the pleasures of their union, and the vows made—all vividly present, clearly not a dream. He felt a mixture of joy and doubt.
Before long, dawn broke. Cheng Feng pondered, "This is fresh, just like it was picked from the tree. They say its flavor is only comparable to the bayberries of Jiangnan. There was a branch of bayberries hanging before me, with over twenty thousand of them, exceptionally sweet.
It's already deep winter, and neither of these two things are from the north. I wonder where they came from." Another night, thinking of parrots, Cheng Feng said, "I've heard that you have white ones, but I've never seen one." Just then, several more parrots flew up, some white, some multicolored, some reciting Buddhist scriptures, some singing poems, all in the Mandarin of the Central Plains.
One day, Cheng Feng saw a wealthy merchant in the market selling two gemstones, called "Bianhong," the color of peach blossoms, the size of a thumb, priced at a hundred taels of gold.
Cheng Feng told his beautiful wife about it, marveling at their rarity. His wife clapped her hands and laughed, "My lord, your vision is so limited! You can't talk about ice with a summer insect! Let me show you!" "Having said this, the room was filled with rare treasures: corals over ten feet tall, pearls the size of chicken roosters, and five-colored gemstones the size of oranges, all dazzling and radiant, too bright to look directly at.
Cheng Feng thought to himself, 'At night I am indulging in such pleasures, yet by day I am still a servant. How could this beauty know my true feelings!' He then recounted how he had lost thousands of taels of gold in trade over the years, leading to his current predicament, and sighed deeply.
The beauty clapped her hands and laughed loudly, 'In the midst of our joy, you suddenly think of such mundane matters. How carefree you are! Although this is your original intention, don't blame me. I'll show you another sight.'
With that, gold and silver filled the room, piled from the ground to the roof beams, countless in number.
The beauty pointed and asked Cheng Feng, 'Do you want some?'" "

Cheng Feng said, 'That's good enough.' " "Actually, it was early summer of the year Ji-Mao. A merchant who sold medicinal herbs came to Liaodong. Most of the herbs were sold out, except for two herbs, Phellodendron bark and rhubarb, which were unsold. There were about a thousand catties of each left. These were cheap goods and not worth much. The merchant saw that no one was buying them and thought about throwing them away.
The beauty said to Cheng Feng, 'You can go and buy them. There is a great profit to be made outside.'" "Cheng Feng went to inquire about the price, but the seller was so eager to sell that he was willing to take whatever he could get.
Cheng Feng firmly believed the beauty's words, thinking they must be true, and he had about ten taels of silver saved up. He bought it all.

Cheng Feng had just released the silks, and less than a month later, Prince Ning of Jiangxi, Chen Hao, rebelled, killing Governor Sun and Deputy Envoy Xu.

Cheng Feng sold his six thousand bolts for another three or four thousand taels. Such things were done whenever they came along, and they were always rare and wonderful." He profited immensely, but could not recall the exact amount.
In four or five years, he amassed fifty to seventy thousand taels of silver, dozens of times more than what he had lost in previous years. It was truly a case of:
what others discard, I seize; a windfall is easily attainable.
Even with divine intervention, one must not be recklessly greedy.
Meanwhile, in Liaodong, when news of the Prince of Ning's rebellion spread, the people were terrified, and rumors circulated wildly. Some said he had ascended the throne in Nanjing; others said his army had crossed the Huai River. Some said he had already reached Linqing and Dezhou.
Several reports were exchanged daily, making it difficult to discern the truth. Cheng Qian, longing for his hometown, was quite uneasy. Privately, he asked his concubine, "What is the truth about that rebellion?"
His concubine smiled faintly and said, "The true emperor is in Hunan and Hubei; what does it have to do with him? He's courting death, hence his arrogance. He'll be captured soon; there's no need for falsehoods. " "

Indeed:
of all the sorrows in the world, none surpass the pain of death and separation.
Even the longest of days has an end, but this sorrow has a finite limit.
Suddenly, the neighboring roosters crowed, the maidservants urged her on, and she prepared to depart. The beauty glanced back three or four times, for all she had seen was silence. Only the
mournful chirping of crickets, the solitary lamp casting a long shadow, the whistling of a mournful wind, and the clanging of iron horses. The dawn star rose in the east, the Milky Way turned in the west.
In an instant, it felt like a lifetime had passed.
Overwhelmed with grief, Cheng Feng gazed at the sky and could only manage a few sobs
