The Story of Rongrong and Her Godfather (Part 1)

The
term "godfather" has a long history, dating back to the time of King Wen of Zhou, even before the Spring and Autumn Period. The first recorded godfather was King Wen, and the first godson was the well-known Lei Zhenzi. Generally, we use terms associated with royalty and nobility for simple reasons: the lower classes had limited exposure and didn't readily develop such advanced and widespread vocabulary in their daily lives. We won't delve into the origins of the term, but the word "godfather" is now very common; almost everyone can have one. My protagonist, Rongrong, has a godfather—a very good one to her. Yes, Rongrong has agreed to let me write about her story.
Typically, godfathers are good friends with their goddaughter's father or mother (like Liu Yifei, I've only heard rumors), and Rongrong's situation is no exception. How good are these godfather and goddaughter friends? They're so good they'd raid bird nests together, poke bees, and even share a bed after getting drunk at their wedding. Rongrong's father and godfather were childhood friends from the same village. China was still very backward in their time. They used kerosene lamps, lived in thatched houses, and had little cultural or entertainment activity. The only entertainment for young people was their intimate moments after the kerosene lamps were blown out at night. Of course, getting married was a luxury in the countryside back then. Rongrong's godfather wasn't so lucky; he was over 30 and still unmarried. Rongrong's father, on the other hand, was relatively well-off, so he married Rongrong's mother.
The story begins on Rongrong's father's wedding day. Of course, Rongrong's godfather was there to help with the chores. Rural weddings are usually held in the village, with guests staying at nearby neighbors' homes. A large kitchen was set up in one of the homes, and Rongrong's godfather was in charge of the kitchen. He entertained the guests at noon, and the evening was for the traditional wedding night games. A wedding in the countryside was a major event in the village, not only because of the food but also because of the fun and games. The wedding night customs in rural areas are familiar to most people. With the internet so developed now, the more explicit wedding night pranks in rural areas are widely known. Back then, these pranks were even more elaborate, but people weren't aware of them because the media wasn't as developed. Many people would secretly hide in corners of the room or outside at night to watch the newlyweds consummate their marriage. Rongrong's godfather was responsible for clearing everyone out, but after everyone was gone, he stayed behind. Actually, he didn't stay intentionally; he had simply drunk too much and fallen asleep on the floor.
The wedding night was quiet because Rongrong's family was quite influential in the village, and they treated everyone to a very good banquet. In the countryside, plenty of alcohol is everything, and that night there was plenty of alcohol, so Rongrong's godfather also got drunk. After clearing everyone out, he collapsed in the wedding room, but in a corner, unnoticed by everyone who had been drinking. At midnight, what we call early morning, the godfather was awakened by a series of curses.
"You shameless woman, you're four months pregnant, why did you marry me?"
"I had no choice, if you hadn't saved me, I would have died!"
"No, I can't have you, you shameless woman!"
"But I have to do this for my child, please have pity on me! I beg you, my child and I will do anything for you!"
"No, how can I face anyone after this?"
"Then just kill us, we're going to die anyway."
"Sigh, just leave first thing tomorrow morning, pretend nothing happened."
"Letting us go is worse than killing us, we'll still die anyway, since you saved us, we might as well die here!"
"I only wanted to save you, I didn't expect you to..."
"I had no choice, I want to die too, but I can't die for my child!"
"I was trying to help you, why did you hurt me?"

"I had no other choice, at this moment you are my only hope!"
"But you know, if word gets out, how can our family hold our heads high in the village?"
Rongrong's godfather, listening to their conversation from the corner, understood the situation, but had no chance to leave. He had no choice but to wait until they fell asleep before sneaking out.
However, they showed no signs of sleeping. Rongrong's godfather huddled in the corner like an ant on a hot pan, unsure what to do. Rongrong's parents, or more precisely, Rongrong's mother and adoptive father, were still haggling.
"If all else fails, you can take my daughter as a child bride, and we'll take care of you together after she comes of age!"
Even with such a offer, Rongrong's adoptive father still hesitated. Ah, how to put it? The famous management scholar Yu Shiwei once said, "Details determine success or failure," and indeed, this small detail determined whether Rongrong's life could continue. Rongrong's godfather couldn't help but fart. This tiny detail saved a life. That's why Rongrong often said later, "Life is just a fart!" There were only three people in the room. Anyone with decent hearing could tell where the sound was coming from; the godfather had been discovered.
"Who's there? Come out!" Rongrong's adoptive father called out.
"Brother, it's me."
"Jin Xing, what are you still doing here?"
"I drank too much and overslept. Sorry, I'm going home now!"
"Wait, don't go yet!"
"I just woke up, I didn't hear anything." Rongrong's godfather was just that honest; he'd be better off saying nothing. Rongrong's adoptive father wasn't one to back down.
"Since you're still here, let's have a few more drinks. You've helped so much today!"
"It's nothing, we're brothers, it's only right. It's so late, I'm sorry to disturb your rest!"
"You heard everything about what happened, right?" Rongrong's adoptive father asked.
"This…"
"Have a drink, let's see if there's a better solution!"
Seeing that things had come to this, Rongrong's godfather had no choice but to stay.
"This brother of mine has always been good to our family. If you want to stay, you can serve him tonight too!" Rongrong's adoptive father said coldly to Rongrong's mother. Normally, a woman wouldn't agree to such an excessive request, but in those times, helpless women often had no choice but to agree. Rongrong's godfather, faced with this unexpected opportunity, was at a loss. Agreeing was problematic, refusing was equally unacceptable, because he knew that if he wanted to live that night, he couldn't leave this house.
In those days in rural areas, being cuckolded meant losing face and family honor, and many died for it. It's just that technology and human rights weren't as advanced then, so no one pursued the matter. Actually, China's household registration system was quite comprehensive, originating in the Qin Dynasty, during the time of Shang Yang's reforms. Shang Yang can be considered the first Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission in Chinese history; he established China's household registration system. It is said that after Shang Yang's reforms, the previous king died, and the royal family and nobles were hunted down. They were required to register their ID cards when checking into inns, otherwise they couldn't stay. Shang Yang could only lament that he never expected to die at his own hands. Rongrong's godfather also experienced this firsthand, never imagining he would almost lose his life so inexplicably.
Ultimately, Rongrong's mother made a very difficult decision for her daughter's sake. At the time, she may not have even known it was her daughter, but on her wedding night, she had to serve two men simultaneously. Although neither man was the father of her child, she had no choice. Like Nie Xiaoqian, who, despite having her own ideas, had to obey her grandmother's orders, or Ning Caichen would die.
At midnight, in the early autumn air, the night in Qingdao felt particularly cool and desolate. At least, that's how Rongrong's mother felt. But she also felt a strange warmth, not because of the alcohol. As Gu Long said, "The more wine you drink, the warmer you feel; the more water you drink, the colder you feel." At this moment, in Rongrong's mother's world, as long as her child had hope, her world was warm. (To be continued…)
