Bar Scammers (Part 1)
In the autumn of 2013, at the urging of my classmate and good friend Lei Zi, my girlfriend Xiao Xue and I left school and went to a city in Jiangsu Province to work as bar scammers with him!
Some people may not know what bar scammers are. Baidu Encyclopedia says that bar scammers are "service personnel" who, under the instruction of others or spontaneously, chat with people online under the pretense of making friends, and lure others to bars to consume expensive drinks.
Before going, I had never even heard of such an industry. For the first few days, Xiao Xue and I just worked as waitresses and did odd jobs in the shop to familiarize ourselves with the work environment. Every afternoon around two or three o'clock, several pretty girls would bring one customer after another to our coffee shop, including Lei Zi's girlfriend Fang Fang.
The main source of income for bar scammers is to trick customers into spending money in the shop and earn commissions. The main way to increase spending is by selling alcohol. A bottle of fake red wine that costs only a few yuan to produce can be sold for hundreds or even thousands of yuan in the shop. On her second day at work, Fangfang landed a big order. The customer she brought looked old enough to be her father. After opening four bottles of red wine in a booth, Fangfang called for help. The three women and the customer spent over 8,000 yuan. Although the wine was counterfeit, they drank a lot, and later, the man, drunk, became increasingly unruly, groping Fangfang and taking advantage of her. Meanwhile, Lei Zi pretended not to see when he refilled their drinks!
A few days later, Xiaoxue joined Fangfang and her friends. Their income was indeed tempting; their wages were settled daily, amounting to four figures, which was very attractive to us fresh out of school!
High income meant high effort. First, their clothes had to be attractive to men, and some physical contact with customers was unavoidable, especially with big orders. For example, Fangfang was once groped and hugged. Although she tried to stop the man's advances, he still kissed her and touched her breasts. Lei Zi saw this but could only pretend not to know anything!
Xiaoxue, when she first started, didn't have much experience, so she mostly did small orders. Even when we moved locations at the end of the year, Xiaoxue still hadn't landed any big orders; her highest spending was only a little over three thousand. And I got used to seeing Xiaoxue walking in and out of front of me every day, arm in arm with one man after another!
