May this love last forever. (Part 3)

My
father helped me complete the enrollment procedures and then prepared to go back home, as he still couldn't leave his business. Before
leaving, he didn't say anything, but left the car with me and took out a Nokia
8250 and a bank card from his bag, saying, "Take care of yourself. Call me if you run out of money."
I nonchalantly took the car keys, phone, and bank card, ignoring his words. He sighed and
walked away silently, occasionally turning back to look at me. At that moment, I suddenly felt a little sorry for him; he
hadn't enjoyed any family happiness all these years. But thinking that he had brought all this on himself, I hardened my heart and ignored
him, turning instead to find the student dormitory where I might stay for three years.
It was my first time leaving home, and I was filled with unease. When I arrived at
the dormitory door, as described in the information I received from the registration office, I found someone already inside, so I gently knocked on the door.
"Coming!" someone answered, quickly opening the door. Seeing my bags,
he smiled and said, "You're in this dorm too, right? We'll be roommates from now on, come on in!" He then helped me
with a bag and went into the room first.
I went inside; only he was in the four beds. Luckily, I arrived early. He said to
me, "Choose a bed yourself; there are three more beds available." The four beds were the usual
layout: a desk underneath and a bed on top. The school had already provided bedding, so
I chose a bed near the balcony facing east, right opposite him.
During our conversation, I learned he was from Nantong, Jiangsu. Strangely, we weren't in the same department
, yet we were assigned to share a room. Soon after, another guy arrived—a fellow townsman of mine! But this guy
looked like a complete idiot, so I ignored him and didn't bother talking to him. Only
that guy from Nantong was really good-natured; he even joked with him, seemingly accommodating him. I just plugged my CD player into my headphones
and ignored everything else.
The last bed next to mine remained unoccupied until the start of the semester, so I knew it
was just the three of us in the dorm. After attending the opening ceremony and a few classes, my old boredom flared up again, and I
started plotting how to skip class.
On the afternoon of the first day of class, I found an opportunity to sneak out of the classroom. But our school was located
in a very remote suburb, and considering it was a half-hour drive from the city, I wasn't ready to leave
school to go out and have fun. I just bought a pack of cigarettes at the supermarket and smoked them while looking around.
"Huang Tao!" In this unfamiliar environment, I actually heard someone call my name.
I was stunned for a moment. I looked towards the source of the voice and was overjoyed. I shouted, "Zhang Jian! What are you doing here!" It
's true what they say, life is full of unexpected encounters. After not seeing each other for three years, we actually met again in this unfamiliar school
. Zhang Jian was much stronger and taller than he was in junior high school, a head taller than me.
Seeing each other again in a different place, we naturally greeted each other warmly. After handing him a cigarette, I asked, "You must
have skipped class too, right? We really are destined to meet. How have you been these past few years?" Zhang Jian lit
his cigarette, took a drag, exhaled a smoke ring, and looked at me with a smile, saying, "Not bad, brother. How are you doing?
"
I gave a wry smile and replied, "Just so-so. I feel like I wasted three years. But you still managed
to get into university, that's impressive. I underestimated you." "Where?" He said self-deprecatingly, "My dad paid to get me in
! I could never dream of getting into university on my own." Sure enough, he was just like me. After I told him about my situation
, we both burst into laughter.
"Huang Tao, how are things between you and Ding Ling?" He actually remembered my relationship with Ding Ling.
The joy of being rejected by Ding Ling two months ago and reuniting with Zhang Jian had faded somewhat. I took a deep drag of my cigarette and replied, "There's nothing between us
, maybe we're just not meant to be. Never mind, let's not talk about her."
Unexpectedly, he looked at me strangely and asked doubtfully, "I thought she came to this school with you.
She has nothing to do with you? With such good grades and attending a top-tier high school, how come she's at this lousy
school?"
"What?" I exclaimed in surprise, so much so that I didn't even notice my cigarette falling from my hand. "You mean…she's at this
school too?"
"Yes!" Zhang Jian looked at me strangely. "You didn't know? I thought you came together."
At that moment, my heart was in turmoil. I quickly grabbed his hand and asked, "Which department is she in? What's her major?
Tell me quickly!"
Zhang Jian laughed at my eagerness and said… "You're still so obsessed with your girlfriend
, huh? I don't know either, we just bumped into each other yesterday and exchanged a few words. Ding Ling is
a real beauty now, you'd better hurry up and get her. University isn't like before, you might lose her to someone else someday
."
Not getting the answer I wanted from Zhang Jian, I reluctantly let go of his arm and lit another
cigarette. Seeing my bad mood, he patted my shoulder and said, "What are you worried about? Since we're in the same school, you
're bound to see each other. A beauty like Ding Ling definitely won't be unknown. Just relax." I thought he
was
right, so I relaxed a little and chatted with Zhang Jian again. Soon the students
started leaving class, and I said to him, "Let's go eat out. It's rare for us to meet, brother, my treat
, let's have a good drink." Actually, I'm a little allergic to alcohol and have a very low alcohol tolerance; I claim I'll be knocked out after one bottle of beer, but in my excitement,
I didn't care.
Zhang Jian was naturally delighted and said, "Okay, but wait a moment, I'll call someone." "Hmm? Who is it?" I asked curiously .i=64> Oh, could it be that we have some acquaintances here? That's too much of a coincidence, how come they're all gathered together? Actually, what I didn't know was that because this school has a so-called "cooperative" relationship with my local labor bureau, quite a few people from my hometown got into this school through special channels.

When Zhang Jian heard my question, he seemed a little shy and replied, "My girlfriend." Wow, this guy already has a girlfriend
! I naturally grabbed his neck and began a brutal interrogation: "Tell me honestly, where did you get this
girlfriend? Damn it, I'm still single, and you've got a hottie to keep you company!" Zhang Jian resisted while
retorting, "Stop, you son of a bitch! What business is it of yours if I'm chasing girls? If you're jealous, go get your
Ding Ling, why are you taking it out on me?"
Hearing his words, I stopped, somewhat annoyed. Perhaps he realized he had said something wrong, and
said embarrassedly, "Brother, with your looks, you're not afraid of not finding a woman? Don't even think about it! As for me, actually, I went
to study in another city with my dad in my second year of high school. I met my girlfriend at school, we'll talk about it when you see her."
He even pulled out a pager, ready to call his girlfriend. I awkwardly handed him my phone, saying, "You know
her dorm number, right? Use this to call, hurry up." "Wow!" Zhang Jian exclaimed. "Kid, you're a big shot
! You're even using a Nokia!" He took the phone without ceremony and started examining it.
I looked at him speechlessly. I wondered
what his reaction would be if he knew my old man had even prepared a car for me. This city isn't like big cities like Shanghai; there aren't many wealthy students. As far as I
know, besides me, there's only one other local student who drives to school.
The call connected quickly. After he finished talking to his girlfriend, he dragged me to the ground floor of the girls' dormitory, Building 3,
to wait. Watching the girls coming and going, I, who had never seen anything like this before, felt a little uncomfortable, while Zhang Jian, who
had probably been through this a few times, seemed more composed.
A few minutes later, a girl with a ponytail walked towards us with a smile. I carefully examined
my brother's woman. She was a tall and slender woman. Although her face wasn't particularly beautiful, her advantage
lay in her figure. Without wearing high heels, she was probably over 1.65 meters tall. She wore a t-shirt
and jeans, and there wasn't an ounce of excess fat on her exposed body. At that moment, she had a smile on her face, giving off a
girl-next-door vibe.
"Zhang Jian, who is this?" the girl asked Zhang Jian, looking at me with a puzzled expression.
"Let me introduce you." Zhang Jian casually took the girl's hand and said, "This is my good brother,
Huang Tao! This is my girlfriend, Zhu Lin!" (Some people may have noticed that she shares
the same name as the female lead in Liao Liao's famous work, but I can't help it. When I saw Liao Liao's work, I also thought it was a coincidence, but Zhu Lin is
her real name, so I didn't change it.)
Zhu Lin generously extended her hand and smiled at me, "Huang Tao, hello! Since you're Zhang Jian's good brother, you're naturally
my good friend too. It's a pleasure to meet you!" I was a little embarrassed and quickly reached out to hold her small hand, saying repeatedly
, "Hello, hello, you're so beautiful, Zhang Jian is so lucky." "Bullshit!" Zhang Jian said unhappily,
"You can praise me, but don't belittle me at the same time, okay?" Zhu Lin chuckled to herself, enviously saying, " "You two have such a
great relationship! I heard you were old classmates, right?"
Zhang Jian quickly agreed. I thought to myself, annoyed, "More than old classmates, my woman has been with your boyfriend
before I even had her! Damn it!" But on the surface, I naturally had to save face for my brother, so I said to the two of them, "
Let's go first, or there won't be any seats later. We can talk while we eat at the restaurant."
Zhu Lin hesitated and said, "Forget it? How about we just eat at the school cafeteria? It's
such a waste to eat out." I naturally refused, "No way! It's not easy for us brothers to get together again, so we should
celebrate properly. I promised to treat you, don't try to save me money, let's go!" After saying that, I took the lead and walked towards the school gate
. Zhu Lin had no choice but to follow us.
We found a restaurant that looked relatively clean and pushed open the door. But to my surprise, the business
was booming, and the outdoor hall was already full.
Seeing this, Zhu Lin whispered, "Since there are no seats, why don't we go back?" I, however, stopped
the proprietress who was serving dishes and said, "Boss, do you have any private rooms? Please give us one." The proprietress looked at the three of us and
said, "We do, but only large private rooms are available. There are only three of you, so you might not have ordered enough food, as there's a minimum
charge." I nonchalantly asked, "How much?" "Two hundred," the proprietress replied.
Zhu Lin tugged at Zhang Jian's sleeve and whispered, "Let's forget about Huang Tao. We can't afford two hundred yuan worth of food.
Let's go somewhere else." My husband had left me ten thousand yuan in his card, so I was still financially comfortable. I
said to the proprietress, "Okay, lead the way." Seeing that she couldn't persuade me otherwise, Zhu Lin didn't say anything more.
Led by the proprietress, the three of us entered a large private room. The room could seat ten people, but with only three, it felt a bit empty.
I picked up the menu and handed it to Zhu Lin, saying, "Ladies first, you order first! Don't be shy, order whatever you want
."
Zhu Lin was from Xuzhou and seemed to be able to handle spicy food quite well; she ordered spicy chicken and boiled fish. Suddenly remembering we might
not eat spicy food, she hurriedly asked, "Sorry, I forgot you probably don't eat spicy food. We'd better not order anything,
you guys order." "Who said we don't eat spicy food?" Although I'd never eaten Sichuan food before, how could I object to a beautiful
woman's order? I quickly told Zhang Jian it was okay, we both love spicy food…
Zhu Lin still handed the menu back to me. Looking at the menu, it really was mostly Sichuan cuisine, so I
ordered things like shredded pork with garlic sauce and braised pork tenderloin—dishes that seemed more palatable. I ordered about ten dishes, until
they both said they'd had enough. Then I called the owner in, handed her the order, and added, "Bring
a case of beer first… plus two large Sprites."After the proprietress left, I chatted with Zhang Jian and his girlfriend. Zhang Jian told me how he and Zhu Lin met, and their tacit understanding made me quite envious. Still single, I increasingly wanted to find a relationship in university. I also thought of Ding Ling, who was in the same school but I never saw her. If I pursued her again , would she be with me? The food arrived quickly, and Zhang Jian and I each poured a glass of wine, ready to down it in one gulp, when unexpectedly, Zhu Lin...

She hadn't even opened the Sprite she'd prepared, but poured herself a full glass of beer and said to me, "Huang Tao, today is our first
meeting, so let me toast you first. Zhang Jian is a bit impulsive, so I'll have to rely on you, my brother, to take care of me for the next four years of university
. I'll drink this first." Without waiting for my reply, she downed her glass in one gulp.
I stared in disbelief. These glasses weren't small; two glasses made up a bottle. With my capacity for one bottle,
it seemed I was in serious trouble. But the girl had already drunk, so I couldn't back down. I reluctantly raised
my glass and downed mine as well.
Zhang Jian chuckled and said, "Brother, we haven't seen each other for so many years, you should at least have a drink with me, right? I'll do what
my wife does and drink this first. You can drink whatever you want if you can't." Zhang Jian had drunk with me a few times in middle school and knew
I couldn't hold my liquor. He wasn't really up to any good this time. After watching him down his full glass,
I could only smile wryly and refill my glass, then tilt my head back and down it as well.
After two glasses, I'm almost at the end of the bottle. I'm so frustrated I could cry. I'm reaching my limit so quickly.
Since we're all on the same side anyway, I quickly pushed aside the bottle of liquor, opened a bottle of Sprite, and
poured myself some, saying, "You two are too ruthless! Are you trying to get me drunk? Fine, I'm not going to keep you company. I'll just have a soft drink."
Zhu Lin seemed surprised that I gave in so quickly; we'd only just started drinking. Zhang Jian whispered
something in her ear, and she suddenly realized what was going on, saying apologetically, "Sorry, Huang
Tao. I didn't know you...can't hold your liquor. It's okay, just have a soft drink." Zhang Jian seized the opportunity to tease me, saying, "
Are you even a man? My wife's drinking beer, and you're just sitting there pretending to be dead with a Sprite. Show some manly spirit
!"
"Get lost!" I wasn't going to mince words with him. "You're just good at exposing my weaknesses. If you're so tough, try drinking Coke with me.
I'm all for it. You know I can't drink and you're still singing. It would be an idiot for me to even bother with you
." No matter how he tried to discourage me, I calmly continued drinking my Sprite. I must say, Zhu Lin was
really impressive; she drank six or seven bottles of beer by herself, even more than Zhang Jian. As a complete novice at drinking
, I secretly admired her. If I had to drink that much, I would have collapsed on the floor long ago.
The meal lasted over an hour, and the two of them finished off the entire case of beer—twelve bottles in total, with the exception of me, who drank most of it.
When the bill came, it was almost 200 yuan. The proprietress smiled and said it was fine since it was my first time there, and I should patronize
her business again. Actually, I was thinking that prices here were really low; back home, a meal like that would easily cost over 300 yuan
.
I could tell Zhu Lin was a little worried about the money. These days, a college student's monthly allowance is at most
four or five hundred yuan. She pulled Zhang Jian over, indicating she would pay half for me, but I stopped her. Zhang Jian, standing beside me, laughed and said, "This
kid's family's rich, and he's a bit dim-witted. Don't be polite with him." I rolled my eyes at him, cursed a few times, and casually pulled out
some bills to pay for the meal. Zhu Lin, seeing that I was actually quite well-off, gave up the idea of splitting the bill.
After we were full, the three of us took a walk around the school to help digest. After chatting for a while, Zhang Jian said he would take Zhu
Lin back, so I said goodbye to them and headed towards the dormitory.
Although I only drank most of a bottle of wine, my alcohol tolerance is really poor. After drinking, I felt extremely
sleepy and just wanted to go to bed early. As I walked straight towards the dormitory, I unexpectedly saw a figure in the distance that looked a lot like
Ding Ling, whom I had been longing for. I was overjoyed and quickly went over to get a closer look, but then I saw a man coming from in front of me
. He walked up to her, took her hand, and the two of them walked hand in hand towards the supermarket.
When the woman turned her head, I immediately recognized her as Ding Ling. She was quietly holding the man's
hand and walking beside him. What was going on? I was completely stunned. How could she be so intimate with a man
?
Having had a few drinks, I rushed over and shouted before I even got close, "Ding Ling!" She heard me and
turned around blankly. When she saw me, she clearly looked incredulous. It seemed she didn't know I
was in the same school as her. The man also looked at me strangely, seemingly asking her in a low voice who I was.
I rushed to her side, looking at their tightly clasped hands, and felt a pang of unease.
"Who is he?" I asked, panting and staring intently at Ding Ling.
The man glared at me and yelled, "Hey, kid! Who I am is none of your business! Ding
Ling, who is this idiot? He comes in like this right off the bat." Ding Ling didn't answer, still looking at me with a complicated
expression. In a moment of impulsiveness, I yelled, "I asked you to be my girlfriend and you wouldn't agree, but now
you're with another guy. What do you mean by that?" My yelling immediately made the guy realize what was going on. He
looked at me with a mocking gaze, saying nothing, just watching how Ding Ling would react.
"I'm sorry…" Ding Ling whispered to me, "I already have a boyfriend. Please don't bother me anymore
." I couldn't believe she'd already ruled me out so quickly. The guy laughed arrogantly, "
Did you hear that? You better get lost, or I'll be ruthless if you bother us again." I wanted to rush up and
beat this jerk to a pulp, but seeing Ding Ling's uneasy eyes, I lost the courage. Ding Ling tugged at
the man, and the two of them turned and left without paying me any attention. The guy even gave me a contemptuous smile as he left, making me almost
explode, but in the end, I just silently watched their backs disappear into the distance.
My mind was in a daze the whole way back to my dorm. Ding Ling, who had rejected me, was already with
another man so quickly. Why? Did she really have no feelings for me anymore? But I could still see in her eyes that
she still cared about me. Why was this happening?
The inner turmoil and pain almost drove me crazy. Because I hadn't asked Zhang Jian for his dorm number, I borrowed my
friend's pager from Nantong and paged him. He called back, puzzled, asking, "What's up? Didn't we just break up
? Something wrong?" I said directly, "Come keep me company, bring a case of liquor." Zhang Jian asked, puzzled:i=62> "What are you doing? Are you crazy? Didn't we just finish drinking? Why are you asking me to drink again?" "Never mind that." I shouted angrily, "Are you coming or not? If not, I'll find someone else." "..." Zhang Jian probably realized something was wrong too: "Come on, let's..."

"You just wait!" I said, then hung up.
My roommates noticed something was off and came to ask what was wrong. I told them it was nothing and they didn't need to worry about me.
The guy from the same city muttered a few curses, something about me being arrogant and ungrateful, but I
ignored him.
A while later, Zhang Jian arrived, barking angrily as he walked in, "Damn it, I almost got
kicked out by that aunt downstairs carrying a case of beer. It was a struggle to get up here. You better give me a reason today, or I'm not letting
you off the hook!" I ripped open the cardboard box, pulled out a bottle of beer, opened it on the corner of the table, and drank it down in one gulp. I drank too
fast and choked, tears streaming down my face.
"What's wrong?" Zhang Jian snatched the bottle from my hand and asked, "You've only been gone a little while. What happened?
Tell me, how will I know why if you don't tell me?" I took a breath and gritted my teeth, saying, "I ran into Ding
Ling." He noticed the change in my tone and asked, "What happened to her? What made you like this?
" I replied with a wry smile, "She's with a man." Zhang Jian looked at me for a while, then burst out laughing,
"Damn, I thought something serious happened. Turns out it's just that you broke up with your boyfriend."
I didn't answer, but just snatched the beer from his hand and continued chugging. This time he didn't stop me, but
opened a bottle for himself and said, "Okay, buddy, I'll drink with you." That night, I, who never drank more than one bottle, probably
downed seven or eight bottles of liquor. I only remember drinking until I vomited, then drinking again, then vomiting again. I
can't even remember how many times I vomited; I only remember that feeling of being worse than dead. Finally, I went on a drunken rampage,
shouting Ding Ling's name and trying to jump off the second-floor balcony. Even people from other dorm rooms came out to watch my performance.
Zhang Jian and that guy from Nantong finally managed to pull me back down. After a long commotion, I finally fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night
and vomited twice more. Zhang Jian was worried about me, so he stayed on the empty bed... He settled in, and thankfully, September wasn't too cold;
he just found something to cover himself with for the night.
For the next few days, I was very depressed, and naturally, I had no interest in going to class. Zhang Jian, however,
often brought Zhu Lin to see me, probably trying to distract me.
After a few days, my mood calmed down a bit. Actually, I had this thought in my mind: I refuse to believe that without
Ding Ling, I wouldn't be able to find a girlfriend in the next three years. I have a car and money; finding someone prettier than her will
be a piece of cake.
One day, Zhang Jian suddenly ran up to me, grabbed me, and shouted, "Come on, let's go out and play!" I instinctively
followed him, asking, "What's up? Why the rush?" Zhang Jian chuckled and said, "Let's play online games!"
"Online games—the term wasn't that popular in the early 21st century. It was the Stone Age era.
I'd seen those games before; it was all about AFK (away from keyboard) gameplay, and I had absolutely no interest in them.
Hearing that Zhang Jian wanted to invite me to play online games, I lost interest even more and said, 'What's so fun about that?
If you want to play games, I'll lend you my PS2.' 'No!' Zhang Jian explained, 'A new
game just came out called Legend. Almost everyone in my class is playing it. They say it's really fun. Why don't you come play with me
?'" Hearing it was a new game piqued my interest slightly, but I didn't have high hopes. So, with a "let's see"
attitude, I followed Zhang Jian to the internet cafe outside the school.
Our school was next to a rural area, and the internet cafe was run by someone renting a farmer's abandoned
house. It was quite a long walk from the school gate to there; the path had a small reservoir on one side
and a steep slope on the other. Essentially, we were walking on a dam, then down
the slope via a small path to reach the village. At night, the path was pitch black without any streetlights,
and when it rained, it became muddy. Following Zhang Jian into this illegal internet cafe, which probably didn't even have a license, even though it was still
during class time...
Most of the seats were occupied, and I secretly rejoiced that I wasn't the only one skipping class; there were a whole
bunch of them here. We randomly picked two computers, and Zhang Jian and I sat down to try out this so-called masterpiece, Legend of Mir.
It was still in open beta, and the servers were incredibly unstable. I logged in several times before finally getting in. When I saw the interface
, I was stunned. This was so unreliable! Having grown accustomed to the dazzling graphics of games like Final Fantasy X, seeing Legend of Mir with
graphics comparable to the Super Nintendo was simply unacceptable. I started to wonder if
the players around me, engrossed in their games, had never played games before; how could they not complain about such terrible graphics?
I looked at Zhang Jian suspiciously. He was also somewhat taken aback, but still scratched his head and said, "A friend in our class
recommended it, saying it's super fun. Why don't we give it a try? Some games have bad graphics, but as long as they're fun, that's all that matters
." Although the graphics were beyond my tolerance, since I was already there, I figured I might
as well give it a try. I reluctantly chose a warrior and, after teaming up with Zhang Jian's mage, began my
journey battling chickens and deer.
At first, I didn't find it particularly fun, but after reaching level ten or so and teaming up with a few newbies
to enter the Skeleton Cave, I started to appreciate the game's charm. Back then, there was no candle-free patch
, so in the game, all the caves were pitch black without candles or torches.
Our group of newbies didn't last long before we scattered... Well, Zhang Jian and I were a little better off, sitting next to
each other and able to see each other's coordinates at any time. But later, when the candles ran out, the tension became palpable.
Unfortunately, we both met our demise soon after , dying in the game.
That night, we jumped on the bandwagon and stayed up all night. From then on, Zhang Jian and I immersed ourselves
in the virtual world of Legend. Legend had a world of martial arts and chivalry. As I gradually felt the charm of online games
, I slowly grew to love it too. Zhang Jian was even more addicted than me, to the point that he spent seven consecutive nights in internet cafes the previous week
, not even going back when Zhu Lin found us.That's when I saw Zhu Lin's great side as a woman. Most girlfriends, seeing their boyfriends in internet cafes , unkempt and engrossed in games, ignoring them, would probably have already exploded. But Zhu Lin was different; she simply...

She quietly bought breakfast and late-night snacks for her boyfriend, silently stayed by his side watching him play.
When she was exhausted, she would lean her head on Zhang Jian's lap and take a nap. Even I benefited from it. After a night of gaming,
the feeling of receiving the hot milk and breakfast brought by Zhu Lin made me truly understand the warmth of being cared for by my girlfriend, and I
was infinitely envious of Zhang Jian's good fortune.
At that time, everyone in the internet cafe thought Zhu Lin was too good, too good, to the point that they secretly called
her a woman like a bodhisattva. But Zhang Jian, who was completely absorbed in the game, didn't care much about Zhu Lin's feelings
. Even I was a little annoyed, but I didn't say anything. After all, he was my brother, and
I shouldn't interfere in his personal affairs. It was a case of one willing to give and the other willing to receive.
I only stayed up with Zhang Jian for half a month before I couldn't stand the all-nighters anymore, even with one all-nighter followed by one day
of rest. The amazing tenacity Zhang Jian showed in the internet cafe almost terrified me. Because I often spent time at internet cafes and
sometimes missed the dormitory closing time, I gritted my teeth and rented an apartment on campus. I
was lucky; because it was in the suburbs, the school had provided housing for some teachers, but not
all of them used it. So I was fortunate enough to rent a two-bedroom apartment. The first year it cost 400 yuan a
month, and later it went up to 500.
With this apartment, Zhang Jian basically stopped going back to the dormitory. He would ask me for the key and often play games until he was exhausted
before bringing Zhu Lin here to rest. Sometimes he wouldn't care that I was in the next room and would do *
that* with Zhu Lin, making me incredibly sad to hear their sounds. Sometimes I couldn't resist and masturbated quite a bit
.
Zhu Lin usually cleaned the living room, kitchen, and their bedroom by herself. She suggested that since they weren't paying
rent, she should be responsible for cleaning. I figured she could let it go; if I refused, she might
feel uncomfortable. But when she offered to clean my room and even wash my clothes
, I refused. I can't accept exposing my privacy to outsiders, even if it's my brother's
wife. Besides, there are some things in the room that I shouldn't let women see.
I can wash my clothes at the school's laundry room for a little money; there's no need for Zhu Lin to help. Seeing my firm stance, Zhu Lin didn't press me.
My first semester of university passed in this legendary way. Although I'd seen Ding Ling a few times from afar,
I didn't take the initiative to greet her. She seemed a little awkward when she saw me, at most nodding in acknowledgment, which
I pretended not to see and ignored.
As the holidays approached, a heavy snowfall occurred that year. I had never seen such a heavy snowfall before, and I was incredibly excited.
The heaviest snowfall I'd ever experienced in my hometown was
nothing compared to this. Scenes just a few meters away were almost completely obscured by the swirling snow. I even took a rare walk around the school grounds just to admire the snowscape.
In the snow, I unexpectedly spotted Ding Ling perched on the second-floor railing of the teaching building. She looked incredibly
forlorn and lonely. She reached out to catch snowflakes, watching them slowly melt in her hand. At that moment, I suddenly realized
Ding Ling wasn't happy. I gazed at her delicate face, somewhat mesmerized, until a thick
layer of snow piled up on me. I quickly shook off the snow, composed myself, and turned to leave, heading towards the internet cafe.
Inside, Zhang Jian was controlling his little mage, battling against black and red pigs, while Zhu Lin was beside him,
asking him to come with her to see the snow. Zhang Jian readily agreed but kept dragging his feet, making Zhu Lin pout in frustration
. I wasn't in the mood for games at the time, so seeing this, I pressed the reset button on his computer and
ran away amidst Zhang Jian's angry roar.
Only then was he forced to come out with us to see the first snow. He, too, had never seen heavy snow before and was equally stunned by the pristine white world outside. Zhu Lin laughed and suggested a snowball fight
, so we played like children in the small village. Zhu Lin's laughter was infectious, and I
stopped thinking about Ding Ling. We played until we were tired, then I suggested treating everyone to a hot pot meal
.
Knowing I wasn't short of money, neither of them objected, so we went out for hot pot.
Soon after, the holidays began, and I planned to walk home from Shanghai. Zhang Jian naturally hitched a ride with me.
Zhu Lin said goodbye to Zhang Jian with tears in her eyes, and even I, standing beside them, felt a little teary-eyed from their parting atmosphere. In the end,
Zhang Jian laughed it off, saying, "What's going on? It's only a month, don't act like it's some big deal
." So Zhang Jian and I returned to our hometown. After parting, I went back to the cold, impersonal house I remembered.
Unexpectedly, my father and stepmother were already there, having prepared a meal for me.
I had never imagined such a scene.
Although my stepmother wasn't as excited as my father, she still politely asked me a few words of concern. Naturally, I
couldn't refuse her kindness, and out of respect for my father, I was a little more polite to her.
Looking at the gray hair at my father's temples and his caring eyes, I realized that my father had grown old.
He, who had always had a cold expression, had struggled his whole life, and even he needed the care of his family. But long-held attitudes aren't something that can be changed overnight.
I couldn't simply abandon my pride all at once; I could only soften my tone and be more proactive in my actions.
Even so, he smiled with satisfaction, saying his son had finally grown up and become sensible, which made me feel a little ashamed.
This year, my father put aside his business to stay home with me for the New Year, but I wasn't really focused on
home. Plus, Zhang Jian came to see me directly, so we went to an internet cafe to play Legend of Mir. Even back home
, this game was incredibly popular; most people in the internet cafe weren't playing it, just some girls
chatting on QQ.
On New Year's Eve, Zhang Jian and I were also in an internet cafe. It was almost midnight when I finally logged off
to go home. I asked Zhang Jian, and he said he'd booked the whole night. I was speechless and had to go home alone
.
When I got home, my father didn't say anything, but smiled and said he wanted to take my stepmother and me to a Buddhist temple to pay our respects to the Bodhisattva for the New
Year. Business people often believe in this, and although I'm an atheist, I couldn't ignore it, so I accompanied him on
this trip.
The destination was the largest temple in the city. On the way there, my father drove past Ding Ling's apartment building.
I glanced instinctively into her room and saw the light was on. My father saw me, smiled slightly, patted my
shoulder, but said nothing.
Soon after the New Year, I had to return to school. This time, my father didn't plan to take me; he just handed
me a black bag. I opened it and saw an IBM T30. My father smiled and said, "
You'll need it when you study. Take it with you." I didn't stand on ceremony. Although it probably cost over ten thousand yuan, it wasn't much to him
. I tossed it into the car, contacted Zhang Jian, and drove towards school
.
