7. Yanzi's new roommate

Time flew by, and the year drew to a close. With fewer overseas orders at the end of the year, Yanzi went home early for the Spring Festival. I, on the other hand, didn't return to my hometown until a few days before the New Year. We had agreed to visit her parents during the Spring Festival to formally meet them; after all, we had

both graduated from university and were working, so dating was a normal thing. On the third day of the Lunar New Year, I went to Yanzi's house and bought two bottles of Moutai, several boxes of tea, and some local specialties for my future father-in-law. Her parents were very easygoing and polite to me. Later, I heard from Yanzi that her parents were quite satisfied with me and didn't object to us continuing our relationship.

After the Spring Festival, we both returned to Shanghai to continue working. Yanzi's company was usually less busy at this time, so she left work early. I happened to see a sales position available within the company, so I switched there and started from the most basic sales role. I realized that in the long run, sales would pay much more than technical work. Around March or April of 2010, Yanzi's company moved, and our apartment was quite far from the new address, so we moved to a small two-bedroom apartment. There was one room on each side, with a small living room, kitchen, and bathroom in the middle. We had initially wanted to find a one-bedroom apartment but couldn't find anything suitable. This apartment had a good location and wasn't much more expensive, so we rented it.

We lived in the east-facing room, and the small west-facing room was empty. Yanzi, being quick-witted, suggested to me that we rent out the small room to save a few hundred yuan each month. I naturally had no objection and left the matter to Yanzi. She posted an ad online for subletting the small room, and we started getting calls. However, our requirements were clear: we could only accept young women. After all, we couldn't let a grown man live with us; that would be like inviting a wolf into the house.

One Sunday, I went on a business trip to visit clients, all of whom were in the south. I traveled to several cities, spending almost a week there, and didn't return to Shanghai until the following Saturday. Surprisingly, Yanzi had already found a suitable young woman to rent out the small room on the west side. The utilities and internet were all on us; the young woman would only have to pay a few hundred yuan a month in rent.

I didn't see her when I returned. I only heard from Yanzi that her roommate's name was Liu Xin, and she had just moved in. She worked at a nearby travel agency, and because the agency had many hotlines, Liu Xin sometimes had to work overtime or night shifts. I didn't think much of it at the time.

The next morning, I got up early and went out to buy breakfast for Yanzi. Then I noticed a pair of women's shoes by the door; they weren't Yanzi's, but I guessed they belonged to my new roommate. So I bought an extra breakfast, but when I came back, the small room on the west side was still closed, so I didn't think much of it.

It wasn't until almost lunchtime, when I was cooking in the kitchen, that I saw a girl with long hair, sleepy eyes, and a fairly pretty face come out of the small room. Liu Xin was a straightforward person; after tidying herself up, she quickly greeted me. I introduced myself and asked if I wanted to have lunch together. Liu Xin said she had a date with a classmate, then ate some of the breakfast I had bought earlier and went out. I didn't think much of it; we were strangers, everyone lived their own lives, and there was no connection between us.
