[The Girls' School Teacher] (Episode 23, Chapter 11)

Chapter Eleven: The Opportunity for Rise

November 21st, Monday.

Before entering the train station, commuters usually buy one or two newspapers to pass the time during their one

or two- hour commute.

Japan has three best-selling newspapers: Asahi Shimbun, Sankei Shimbun, and Yomiuri Shimbun.

Statistics show that one in two newspaper buyers purchases

one of , demonstrating their significant influence in Japan.

Passengers on the train habitually pick up their newspapers to read, and occasional exclamations of surprise

attract the attention of those nearby who aren't reading, drawing their gaze to the pages being read.

Today, the entire second page of Japan's three major newspapers is dedicated to reporting on the same thing.

While differ, the meaning is the same—Walmart's Ambition.

All three newspapers cite Walmart's five development plans and purchasing and sales data; such clear

data makes it obvious that it's not fabricated.

Of course, besides Walmart's undisguised ambition, what truly shakes readers' heads is their plan

to drastically cut the salaries of their hardworking employees, even laying off high-paid staff, after achieving success,

all in the name of cost-cutting.

Upon seeing this plan, these people couldn't help but scoff, "Hmph, in Japan, some

things can't be cut."

Undoubtedly, they shared a common sense of indignation. Think about it:

if won't Hitachi Electric be next? Or Meiji Dairies?

Therefore, salary cuts are absolutely unacceptable. The vast majority of wage earners are the backbone of society; anyone who tries to harm their

interests is courting disaster.

Some might say that Walmart has already succeeded in cutting salaries in the US and other countries, so why

can't it do the same in Japan?

Explaining too much won't make these people understand, but every country has its own culture. In the East,

personal relationships always come first, surpassing the law.

Walmart's salary cuts in Japan aren't illegal, but they've lost the hearts of the people. In Eastern societies, losing

the hearts of the people is a hundred times more terrible than breaking the law.

From this point alone, readers of the newspapers felt aversion towards Walmart, considering whether

their wives should refrain from supporting the supermarket for its bargains, lest they be aiding and abetting wrongdoing.

Further down,

the plan to halt purchases from China and instead source goods from other countries with lower prices unsurprisingly went largely unnoticed.

The key point, however, was that besides the plan itself, the three major newspapers added commentaries,

echoing what I had discussed with Lily on Friday, extending the message to farmers and artisans.

Seeing that Walmart's prosperity was at such a high cost to Japan, leaving farmers and

artisans in such dire straits, ignited even stronger feelings of righteous indignation.

Laying off high-paid employees and reducing wages were, after all, internal matters for Walmart, and beyond offering support,

they couldn't interfere with Walmart's actions.

But the prospect of millions of Japanese farmers and artisans being left

destitute was simply intolerable.

Who doesn't have relatives in rural areas or engaged in handicrafts?

If Walmart continues down this path, cutting off the livelihoods of their loved ones and friends, that's absolutely unacceptable!

Besides what I've mentioned, the three major newspapers have drawn up many other comparisons.

For example, while Japanese vegetables, fruits, and meats are expensive, their quality is very reliable. Vegetables, fruits, and meats from countries like China and

the Philippines often use pesticides that don't meet Japanese food safety standards,

and their production and processing are not as reliable.

Another example is toys produced in Japan. While their price competitiveness is far inferior to those from Asian

countries, the world's manufacturing hubs, domestically produced toys, besides being of high quality, are crucial to the livelihoods of twelve partner manufacturers and

eight supply chain companies. If a toy factory goes bankrupt due to unsold inventory, not only

will the hundreds of employees in that factory lose their jobs, but also one or two thousand employees from the aforementioned twenty companies will face

unemployment , plus their families… at least tens of thousands will suffer.

And this is just one toy company; there are at least millions of other artisans. If they all lose

their what an astonishing number that would be! How much pressure would society face?

Japan greatly admires Western welfare systems, so even with its massive debt, it has always striven to ensure

the welfare of its citizens. The fact that so many people in Japan, the world's second-largest economy, are at risk of starvation is undoubtedly

a slap in the face to the Japanese government and social system .

As for other things reported in other newspapers, those are the underhanded matters I mentioned.

The Mainichi Shimbun revealed that their informant overheard a phone call from Walmart executives, who said that

within , they would have Japanese shipping and land transportation companies reduce transportation prices by 30% to 50%,

as this would further reduce costs and increase profits.

It's well known that the Japanese shipping industry, thanks to Walmart's large orders, has been a staunch

supporter, including members of the six major conglomerates such as Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Takkyubin.

This false information immediately sparked strong dissatisfaction, and calls to Bobby Ent's

office poured in.

NHK went even further, sending a mobile news van to Kanagawa, Saitama, and Tochigi prefectures near Tokyo

to explain Walmart's plans in detail to agricultural cooperatives.

Farmers generally have low levels of education, which is true everywhere. Moreover, their environment is relatively

simple they don't understand the complexities of scheming. Expecting them to be as patient and tolerant as urban office workers

is absolutely impossible!

Upon hearing that no one would buy their grains, fruits, vegetables, or meat anymore, they were immediately enraged

. Thousands of farmers stormed ward offices, prefectural councils, and other places, demanding explanations: was

Walmart trying to wipe them out?

In fact, Japanese farmers had long harbored resentment towards Walmart because Walmart never bought their agricultural products.

Even at Carrefour in Chiba, at least half of the agricultural products sold are from Japan.

Japanese agricultural products are of very high quality, so they believe that high quality and high price are synonymous

. The farmers felt insulted when Walmart didn't buy their produce: "You don't buy your good stuff

to sell, you only know how to pick up cheap stuff to sell, don't you know how to appreciate things?"

Of course, the farmers didn't get a response from the ward offices or prefectural councils. So, with the help of some people

, tens of thousands of farmers from several nearby prefectures boarded buses and stormed into every

Walmart , preparing to protest.

They also had a very loud banner with the slogan: "Defend Japan!"

This had escalated to the level of national and ethnic issues, and Walmart was suddenly struggling to cope.

Outside Bobby Ent's office, three female secretaries were constantly on the phone; he didn't need

to listen to the conversations to know what they were saying.

After learning that internal confidential documents had been leaked, he immediately summoned several

managers from the Satellite Systems Service Department, berated them severely, and ordered them to find the mole within 24 hours or be fired.

No wonder he was so furious. Walmart's own satellite logistics system operated on a satellite they

launched , and the effort and money invested were unimaginable to ordinary people.

Of course, the benefits they gained were also obvious. Walmart's rapid rise to become the world's

number one could largely be attributed to this satellite.

Now, this satellite, which belonged only to them and was their most confidential, had actually been used by someone to obtain the company's secret

information. How could he not be horrified?

And this was just a few plans and data sheets related to Japan. If other important information were to fall into

the hands ... what a disaster that would be!

However, this was not what pained him the most. What pained Bobby Ent the most was

the hundreds and thousands of farmers surrounding the eighteen branches in Tokyo and the Kanto region. These farmers sat quietly not far from the store entrances,

banners were everywhere... Bobby Ent admitted that after hearing what the banners said, he

immediately broke out in a cold sweat.

In addition to slogans that rose to the level of national and ethnic issues, there were even more shocking statistics.

"If you buy a box of pork at Walmart, Japanese farmers suffer no loss. But if 100,000 people each

buy a box, we'll have to slaughter 1,000 pigs and throw them away… If you buy a head of

cabbage , Japanese farmers suffer no loss. But if 100,000 people each buy a head, we'll have to

abandon 1,000 acres of land…"

Banners like these were large and eye-catching, visible to everyone entering the Walmart.

More and people approached the farmers to inquire, and many immediately turned and left, refusing to enter the Walmart

.

"Damn it, William, look at those people explaining things! Do they look like farmers? They're definitely shills from Ito-Yokado or some other

department store!"

Bobby Ent stood at the window, pointing at the people below, grumbling to his assistant.

"I didn't expect their reaction to be so intense!"

his assistant, William, said, also frowning.

"Oh, right, I told you to call the police. What did they say? Why haven't they arrived yet?"

Bobby Ent asked again, frowning.

"Don't even mention it,"

William shook his head. "I even called the deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Department, but no

one answered, let alone sent anyone."

"Hmph, is this how they treat businessmen investing in Japan? Is this how they treat companies from the

United States of ?"

Bobby Ent sneered. "Give me my phone. I need to speak with Ambassador Bonton. If we don't

put some pressure on them, will they treat us like Indians?"

*** *** *** ***

That evening, Lily's house was brightly lit.

Unlike the gloomy atmosphere among the Walmart executives, the beautiful young woman was in high spirits and had specially prepared

a feast for me:

spicy shredded chicken, stir-fried tender lamb with scallions, boiled beef, dry-fried spicy pork intestines, ginkgo and lettuce stew, and mushroom and chicken

soup .

When I walked in, delicious food was laid out on the table, and a beautiful young woman was swaying her alluring

body, taking a bottle of Moutai from the wine cabinet and walking towards the table.

"Hmm, why do the dishes taste so strong today?"

I said, after washing my hands and sitting down at the table, looking at the colorful and fragrant dishes.

Lily took out two small ceramic cups, opened a bottle of Moutai, and poured some in. "Don't you like spicy

food? Seeing how good your plan was, I'm treating you!"

I sighed. "I thought you wanted to take good care of your husband, but it turns out it's all about mutual benefit

!"

"Don't try to take advantage of me verbally!"

The beautiful young woman glared at me, a hint of resentment in her voice. "Would you be happy if you made me suffer

?"

"It's not that I'm forcing you, it's just that you won't face our feelings."

I stared seriously at the stunning beauty. "Since you're happy with me now, why can't you make

yourself even happier?"

"I can't argue with you..."

Lily pouted her pink lips and pushed a glass of wine towards me. "Come on, let's toast!"

"Cheers? That glass must cost at least five qian! Are you kidding me?"

I frowned, drank most of the wine in front of me, and then swapped my glass with hers.

"You drink this."

The beautiful young woman rolled her eyes at me, but still raised her glass, which was only a third full, and said gracefully,

"Junxiong... it's a cliché, but thank you anyway..."

"Clang..."

With a crisp clinking of glasses, we downed our drinks in one gulp.

Only after setting down our glasses did I smile slightly. "Why do I feel like you're gloating a little?"

"Really? It's so obvious!"

Lily stuck out her little tongue. "Oh, Junxiong, this Moutai makes me a little dizzy."

"If you can't drink it, why drink Moutai? Moutai is even more intoxicating than Wuliangye."

"I was thinking that since I made you spicy food today, you should naturally drink some high-proof Chinese liquor to

go with . It just so happens that a friend gave us some Moutai after returning from China, so I drank it."

Lily explained softly.

"If you can't drink it, then forget it. Go pour yourself a drink."

I took the bottle from her and poured myself another glass.

"Okay..."

Lily's alcohol tolerance was indeed not good, and she was also afraid that she would get drunk and lose control, which would be

a bit unfair to her sister, so she didn't insist. She went to the refrigerator, got a bottle of aloe vera juice, poured it

into another large glass, and drank a few sips before the dizziness subsided.

"Come on, try my cooking..."

Lily first put a few pieces of meat on my plate before smiling and saying, "Junxiong, you don't know! Walmart's

revenue today will be reduced by at least half, and the two stores in Edogawa Ward and Higashimurayama City will only be one-fifth of

what they were doing a while ago !"

"The effect is quite good,"

I said approvingly.

Eating the boiled beef that Lily made, I felt that the spiciness was still a bit weak.

She probably used chicken peppers, which have a moderate spiciness and a fragrant aroma, so they are occasionally used when making Sichuan

cuisine .

Authentic boiled beef is all about spiciness and freshness, with spiciness enhancing the freshness, so it's best

to use chili peppers from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to make it flavorful.

Actually, I've made boiled beef for my wives several times before. The first time, it really made them sick.

Haru and Eri drank several large glasses of ice water and almost got stomach aches. In the end, I had to press

my palms and use my inner energy to regulate their stomachs to calm them down.

Later, they learned that I shouldn't make it too spicy or too plentiful, and that's when they found it delicious.

Therefore, when cooking, one must consider the habits and tastes of the diners.

In this respect, Lily clearly hasn't done enough; after all, she rarely serves others. I believe that with my guidance

, she will definitely become a wonderful and obedient wife!

These thoughts flashed by, and after devouring several pieces of pork intestines, I praised the beautiful young woman's

cooking skills. Lily was delighted and kept putting food on my plate, but she didn't eat much herself, as if she was full if I

was .

It was currently evening news time, and Lily's TV had switched to NHK's evening news channel.

As expected, Sanada Rin had prepared a large amount of information and data, and with the speeches of many farmers and artisans appearing on the screen

, the aloof beauty sharply criticized Walmart's practices and actions,

almost directly calling Walmart a cancer in the Japanese supermarket industry.

Seeing the opponent's suffering brought her joy.

The beautiful young woman had been watching TV with a smile, but after a while, she looked at me somewhat embarrassedly:

"Junxiong... do you think I'm a very bad woman?"

"Hmm?" "

I introduced Walmart to Japan, and they helped me through a difficult time, but now I'm the one dealing with

them . It seems like I'm repaying kindness with enmity."

As she said this, a trace of distress appeared on the beautiful young woman's face.

"First of all, Walmart isn't a charity. They wouldn't help you for no reason.

They only cooperated to enter and dominate the Japanese market. Since

our relationship with Walmart is purely commercial, to paraphrase an American saying, business is business, and

everything else is secondary. In the business world, there are no permanent enemies or friends, only permanent interests. We're

just doing this for business's sake."

"Also, what do you think the betting agreement Walmart signed with you before meant? Do you think they'll

give up on acquiring SOGO just because you didn't resist? Finally, do you think that after Walmart brought down Ito-

Yokado and the others, they'll head south? Will they think we're acquaintances and let your SOGO off the hook then

?"

Lily put down her chopsticks, pondered for a moment, and looked up with a bitter smile: "So, it seems there will eventually be a battle between me and Walmart

."

"Not you, it's us. I'm with you."

I reached out and took her small hand. "As the saying goes, when husband and wife are united, they are invincible. What's

a Walmart? It's a piece of cake!"

"Bullshit..."

My words dispelled the slight worry that had been lingering in the beautiful young woman's heart.

Looking at me, Lily felt a surge of strength, and a smile unconsciously appeared on her lips.

"Oh, by the way, Walmart's response is very quick."

Lily picked up a piece of lettuce and chewed the food carefully, saying, "This afternoon, the US

ambassador, Bonton, called the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protest, claiming that if the government did not stop the behavior of these rioters and

create a good investment environment for Walmart, the US would not rule out suing the Japanese government for inaction at the United Nations

."

"Let him su. Anyway, the United Nations has always been ruled by the Americans."

I said dismissively, "It'll be a good opportunity for others to see how domineering Walmart is."

"But... what if the government really succumbs to the pressure from the United States?"

Lily was still a little worried.

"Then the only outcome is Mori Yoshiro's resignation."

"Oh?"

"No one dares to do something so offensive to the public. Anyone who dares to order the dispersal of demonstrators or

impose news censorship would become the enemy of over 30 million Japanese farmers and artisans. It wouldn't just be

him who suffers; even his political party would face immense and unbearable pressure… Since ignoring it is not

an option , and intervention is not permissible, what other choice does Mori Yoshiro, the prime minister of the ruling cabinet, have but to resign and apologize?"

"Hehe, that seems to be the case…"

"Since the conflict has already been brought to the fore, besides continuing to put pressure on Walmart, you …"

"There's one more thing we can do."

"What can we do?"

Looking at the beautiful young woman tilting her head, humbly asking for advice, I smiled faintly, "My dear Lily, do you

remember what I told you before? SOGO will rise soon, and now is a crucial opportunity!"

"Ah..."

Lily's eyes suddenly brightened.
