【Youthful Days】(4)

IV. Yuan Ziyi

Having just experienced the thrill of romantic love, Wang Feng was abruptly devastated, leaving him listless

and dispirited. It took him two weeks to recover.

He began preparing for the first year of high school, tutored Li Wen'er, and his life gradually returned to normal. During this time, Wang Feng attended

several reunions with his junior high school classmates. Occasionally, classmates would mention Zhao Rui's trip abroad, even mocking her

unusual clothing at school. Though they meant no harm, they were unaware of the

brief but intense romance between Wang Feng and Zhao Rui. Feeling depressed, Wang Feng decided to stop attending junior high reunions.

Time flew by. September 1st marked the start of the new school year. Registration, receiving books, confirming seats—the new environment and new

classmates left Wang Feng no time for nostalgia. He threw himself into high school studies.

The provincial key high school was indeed different from other schools; the academic workload was extremely heavy. However, the summer's preparation gave

Wang Feng immense confidence and freedom, allowing him to focus his energy on a deeper understanding of the material. In the first

midterm exam, Wang Feng achieved the highest total score in the entire grade, especially in physics, where he scored

a perfect score, which impressed everyone. Wang Feng's physics teacher, a highly experienced veteran, saw his

strong foundation in physics and quick thinking, so he encouraged him to participate in the physics competition and tutored him on competition

problems in his spare time.

As a result, Wang Feng's days were completely filled. Before he knew it, December arrived, and under the physics teacher's

guidance , Wang Feng and two other selected students participated in the provincial high school physics competition. The results

were announced immediately, and this time Wang Feng performed exceptionally well, winning first place in both the team and individual

categories . On the way back, the physics teacher was overjoyed, praising Wang Feng as a physics genius and

encouraging him and his classmates to continue participating in the national and even international physics Olympiads for high school students.

However, Wang Feng was somewhat uninterested. He felt that the competition had cost him too much; he had barely touched his beloved

soccer six months of high school, had no independent time each day, and it had almost

affected his tutoring work with Li Wen'er. Looking at the competition questions, they were all tricky and bizarre, purely a

cat-and-mouse game between teachers and students. Participating once in a while was fine, but there was really no need to continue.

So, without even considering the physics teacher's expression, he firmly rejected the suggestion.

It was already the weekend when he got home, and Wang Feng went straight to sleep, sleeping for a whole day to finally recover his energy.

The next morning, Wang Feng got up early, intending to review

the lessons . Suddenly, he heard a knock at the door. Opening it, he saw Sun Nan. Sun Nan was his classmate and

had represented the school in the physics competition with him. Although his results weren't the best, he hadn't dragged the team down.

Sun Nan was chubby, easy-going, and talkative. Wang Feng usually enjoyed spending time with him and occasionally invited Sun Nan over for dinner

on weekends .

"Wang Feng, what are you doing at home?" Sun Nan

asked with a smile as he squeezed through the door.

"What else could I be doing? Eating and sleeping, of course,"

Wang Feng laughed.

"Brother, you're just like me!"

Sun Nan said. "I lost several pounds for this competition. I immediately ate several meals to make up for it when I got back. You can imagine

how hard it was for me."

Wang Feng laughed and said, "If you keep eating like that, you'll turn into a pig!"

"Being a pig is great! Eat and sleep, sleep and eat, never have to think about those physics problems, never have to take exams,"

Sun Nan said. "By the way, I came to invite you to our victory celebration party. We were able to

achieve entirely thanks to you."

"What credit? Just luck,"

Wang Feng said. "Who's coming to the party?"

"Don't worry, no teachers,"

Sun Nan said. "Just a few of us who participated in the competition together, and a few

classmates . No outsiders."

"Great! When?"

"Now."

"Huh?"

"What? You're not telling me you haven't brushed your teeth yet, are you?"

Sun Nan urged, "Let's go, let's go."

Wang Feng was dragged out by Sun Nan, and the two took a bus to Central Park. Sun Nan said, "This is it."

Wang Feng asked curiously, "Here? We're not going to eat flowers and plants, are we?"

Sun Nan laughed, "What? Isn't there a barbecue area in the park? We're having a barbecue today."

When they arrived at the barbecue area, there was already a man and two women sitting around the grill. Wang Feng recognized them immediately. The male classmate

was Qian Qiming from Class 3, who was also Wang Feng's classmate in the physics competition. The other two female classmates were a

tall , beautiful woman with short hair, whose personality was as straightforward as her hair. She was

Xia Shaoying, a classmate. The other was the complete opposite of Xia Shaoying, with long, flowing hair, a petite figure, and a gentle

personality . She was Qin Hairong from Class 4. Seeing Wang Feng and Sun Nan arrive, the group stood up to offer them seats.

"Oh my, we finally managed to invite our school's hero, Sun Nan! You deserve all the credit!"

Xia Shaoying, always outspoken, didn't forget to tease Sun Nan this time.

Sun Nan laughed heartily, "Little Xia has good taste! You must grill a couple more chicken legs for me this time."

Qin Hairong, standing next to him, chuckled and covered her mouth, "Still eating? Sun Nan, don't you think that's a bit of a waste of food?" Sun Nan glared at her, "You guys

are the ones wasting food! I can eat as much as I want and I don't gain weight. " Qian Qiming laughed, "Stop teasing Sun Nan about his flabby body; he always takes things the wrong way." After a few more rounds of banter, everyone took their seats. Wang Feng saw that the fire in the barbecue grill was already lit, the charcoal glowing red in the grill—perfect for grilling meat. Beside the grill were plates of skewered chicken legs, chicken wings, lamb skewers, sausages, vegetables, and various condiment bottles—quite a complete preparation. "Sorry I'm late, everyone has been waiting," Wang Feng said. "You're not the last one, there are still people who haven't arrived," Qin Hairong said. Before Wang Feng could ask who it was, Xia Shaoying quickly said, "Yuan Ziyi hasn't arrived yet." Sun Nan's eyes lit up as he asked, "Is she really coming?"

Xia Shaoying rolled her eyes at Sun Nan and said, "If she says she'll come, she definitely will. She never goes back on her word."

"Is it Yuan Ziyi from our class?"

Wang Feng asked.

"Yes, it's her,"

Sun Nan said.

Seeing everyone's serious expressions, Wang Feng was quite puzzled. He hadn't had much contact with Yuan Ziyi, but in his vague impression

, she was slender, fair-skinned, and seemed rather aloof, rarely speaking to others in class.

Judging from everyone's expressions, it seemed that Yuan Ziyi's presence was very important. He wanted to ask why, but swallowed the words

back.

Xia Shaoying, seeing this, couldn't help but laugh, "Wang Feng, you really are oblivious to everything else, only focused

on your studies. You probably don't know how famous Yuan Ziyi is in our school, do you?"

Qian Qiming and Sun Nan, upon hearing this, simultaneously cast disdainful glances at Wang Feng, making him feel uneasy.

"Don't make things difficult for Wang Feng. Don't you see how hard he studies every day? He doesn't have time to care about

anything ,"

Qin Hairong tried to smooth things over for Wang Feng.

"That's true,"

Sun Nan nodded. "You guys didn't know, did you? Wang Feng is still tutoring."

"Really?"

Everyone became interested and started asking questions all at once.

It's no wonder they were surprised. It's rare for high school freshmen to work part-time, especially since these

students from the city's No. 1 High School are the best students selected from the entire city and surrounding counties. Once they get into No. 1 High School, they're basically on their way to

a top university. So, which family doesn't have to sell everything they own to support their education? Let alone working part-time,

even doing extra housework is unheard of. Wang Feng's situation is truly rare.

Wang Feng repeatedly begged for mercy, briefly explaining the situation to satisfy everyone's curiosity before asking, "Why is

Yuan Ziyi so famous? I really don't know, can you enlighten me?"

"Wang Feng, you can't do that. You need to pay more attention to the people around you,"

Sun Nan said, feigning expertise. "Speaking of Yuan Ziyi, she's incredibly famous. She

published short essays and poems in several magazines during junior high, and recently published an essay, 'Autumn Colors,' in Reader's Digest

. She has countless fans among her peers and is a renowned talented woman in our school."

Wang Feng gasped, "So impressive!"

"Yes. Think about it, Reader's Digest is the magazine with the highest circulation in the country," Qian Qiming continued. "

Moreover, Yuan Ziyi has a proud personality and often doesn't mince words with people; she's known as the 'Cold-Faced Talent.'"

Wang Feng nodded repeatedly, "You're right to look down on me. I really didn't know that. I'm definitely out of touch."

"The key is that Yuan Ziyi doesn't usually participate in activities with classmates, so I was a little

skeptical when I heard she could come,"

Qian Qiming said. "Qin Hairong, you're closest to her.

What did she say when you invited her to this gathering?"

"She didn't say anything,"

Qin Hairong said. "She just said it was to celebrate the achievements of you physics geniuses, and she asked who was there and then

nodded ."

"But the gathering has been going on for 10 minutes, and she still hasn't arrived. Is she going to stand us up?"

Sun Nan asked, glancing at his watch.

Just then, a soft voice came from behind: "Sorry I'm late."

Everyone turned around and

saw Yuan Ziyi standing behind them. She was wearing a beige dress with a wool mesh shawl draped over her shoulders, her shoulder-length hair

simply tied back with a headband. Her deep, dark eyes seemed to see right through people. Her skin was snow-white but almost bloodless, making her slender frame stand out. Was n't she the epitome

of "beautiful flowers that can't withstand the rain" ? Wang Feng was secretly puzzled. She was so beautiful; how come he hadn't noticed before? "Yuan Ziyi, what brings you here? Ah, no, I mean..." Sun Nan stammered, unable to speak coherently. Yuan Ziyi said calmly, "I was stuck in traffic, so I'm late. I'm sorry." "Ziyi, come, sit here." Qin Hairong pulled Yuan Ziyi to sit between her and Xia Shaoying. Sun Nan slumped down and sat down. Qian Qiming laughed loudly, "It's rare to see Sun Nan get his comeuppance." Everyone laughed. "Since everyone's here, let's begin," Qin Hairong said. Everyone picked up their favorite foods and put them on the grill. Wang Feng saw Yuan Ziyi pick up a sausage and casually place it on the grill, knowing she didn't care what she wanted to eat. So he skewered three chicken wings, skillfully brushed them with cooking oil and spices, placed them on the grill and rotated them until half-cooked, then took them off, brushed them with honey, and put them back on the grill. Soon, three golden-yellow chicken wings were grilled and placed on the plates of the three girls, with the words, "Ladies first." Xia Shaoying took the chicken wing from Wang Feng, then stared in astonishment at the charred chicken leg in her hand, saying, "How did you grill this?" Sun Nan, slightly recovered, glanced at the charred chicken leg in Xia Shaoying's hand and said, "You didn't grill a chicken leg, you grilled loneliness." This earned him a glare from Xia Shaoying. Qin Hairong thanked him, put down her meat skewers, and started eating the chicken wing Wang Feng had offered. Yuan Ziyi picked up a chicken wing, smelled it, and said, "I wasn't planning on eating anything, but your cooking is so good. It smells wonderful, it would be a shame not to eat it. Thank you." She then ate it politely. As the chicken wings grilled, everyone's spirits gradually rose, and they became more talkative. Sun Nan recounted their experiences participating in the competition, occasionally interjecting with jokes that made everyone laugh heartily. But Wang Feng noticed that no matter what, Yuan Ziyi would only give a faint smile, truly living up to her title of "Iceberg Talent." Unconsciously, the conversation shifted to the eternal theme of the college entrance examination. Sun Nan said casually, "I'm definitely going to Tsinghua or Peking University, there's no question about it." Qian Qiming said, "I want to go to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, I've wanted to go to Shanghai for a long time." Xia Shaoying smiled and said, "Perhaps you want to be closer to home? I'm planning to go somewhere farther away, like Sichuan..."

"Great! By then, the emperor will be far away, and I'll be free to roam!"

Sun Nan muttered. "Watch out for the shotgun

." Xia Shaoying raised her chicken wing as if to shoot, and Sun Nan pretended to run away with his head in his hands.

Qin Hairong continued, "I want to apply to the Normal University in D City."

Wang Feng said, "That school is also good; it's one of the top normal universities in the city. I want to apply to

H University in this city."

Seeing that everyone had shared their ideals, Yuan Ziyi put down her meat skewers and said, "I want to apply to the Chinese Department of Peking University,

but that goal is a bit difficult."

"Why?" Qin Hairong asked curiously.

"You know I've been in poor health since I was little, and I always lack energy when studying. Humanities are fine, but

science will drag me down; I'm too unbalanced in my studies,"

Yuan Ziyi said.

"That's easy!"

Xia Shaoying exclaimed upon hearing this. "There are several science geniuses here right now; any one of them

could tutor you."

Yuan Ziyi shook her head, saying, "I heard you're going to participate in the national competition later. How can you possibly find the time?

This is the foundation-building stage. If you fall behind now, you'll never catch up, especially in your senior year. Who can take care of anyone

else then?"

Everyone fell silent. Wang Feng suddenly said, "I don't plan to continue participating in the physics competition."

Everyone was extremely surprised and hurriedly asked why. Wang Feng explained his thoughts, and everyone

was speechless . Yuan Ziyi looked at Wang Feng carefully with bright eyes and sighed, "You're really a decisive person."

Xia Shaoying clapped her hands and said, "Isn't that solved? Wang Feng will have time if he doesn't participate in the competition, and he also has

tutoring experience, so he can tutor Ziyi."

"Tutoring experience?"

Yuan Ziyi asked curiously.

Everyone then told her about Wang Feng's tutoring work.

Yuan Ziyi smiled and said, "In that case, I'll have to trouble Wang Feng from now on."

Wang Feng repeatedly said he didn't deserve it. The group then chatted and ate, finishing every last bite of food before heading home satisfied.

On their way out of the park, Yuan Ziyi said to Wang Feng, "Wang Feng, I wasn't joking earlier, can you really

tutor me in science?"

"Of course,"

Wang Feng said. "Actually, I really hope I can tutor you."

Yuan Ziyi was taken aback and asked, "Why?"

"Tutoring you will also help me solidify my own knowledge; it's a win-win situation, so of course I'd be

happy to."

"I see,"

Yuan Ziyi smiled, "Your ideas are always different from others."

They discussed the time and place for tutoring and discovered that their homes weren't far apart. So Yuan Ziyi

suggested tutoring at Wang Feng's house for half a day every weekend morning.

Thus, Wang Feng gained another "student." On the weekend, Wang Feng got up early to do housework and prepare

tutoring materials. At nine o'clock sharp, Yuan Ziyi arrived as promised.

Wang Feng first looked at the midterm exam papers in math and physics that Yuan Ziyi had brought. Her scores in these two subjects were indeed

average , 72 in one and only 64 in the other. He first analyzed the papers,

helping her analyze the questions she got wrong from different angles, and then used several problem-solving techniques to verify them. Yuan Ziyi

benefited greatly from his advice.

However, her health was indeed very poor; she asked to rest for a while every hour or so, and even took out

some traditional Chinese medicine in between. Wang Feng secretly gave her a nickname: "Sickly Xi Shi" (

a reference to seemed quite different to Wang Feng; he felt she was actually very easy to get along with.

At noon, Wang Feng suggested that she eat before going back. Yuan Ziyi felt bad, saying that it was fine to ask him

to tutor her, but it was really inappropriate for her to ask him to eat as well.

After several interactions, Wang Feng also knew that Yuan Ziyi had a strong and proud personality, and too much help might

increase her mental burden. So he suggested that since his literary knowledge was relatively weak, perhaps she could tutor him in

some literature in the future. Yuan Ziyi readily agreed.

So, in addition to tutoring Wang Feng in math and physics, she would sometimes read him

modern poetry, sometimes explain the techniques of famous paintings from a picture book, and sometimes explain

the works of literary masters and the stories behind them, which greatly benefited Wang Feng.

He was secretly amazed to discover her wide range of interests. One day, when he casually asked her about it, Yuan Ziyi said,

"Life is short. Wealth, status, and fame are all illusions; only experience and memory truly belong to you. Therefore, I

strive to learn about various fields to enrich myself, so that my life is not in vain."

This attitude towards life immediately filled Wang Feng with respect.

Two months later, the final exams came out. Yuan Ziyi scored

over , and given her already strong performance in humanities subjects, she ranked among the top ten in her class. Wang Feng, however, remained at

the top of the grade with the highest total score.

Several classmates who were close to Yuan Ziyi knew why her grades had improved so rapidly, and Sun Nan and others

insisted that she host a "thank-you banquet" for Wang Feng.

This social nicety left Yuan Ziyi unsure how to handle the situation. Finally, Sun Nan "volunteered" to find a restaurant near

Wang Feng's house and invited Qian Qiming, Xia Shaoying, and Qin Hairong—the same six

people from the previous barbecue—to eat together.

At the table, Sun Nan and Xia Shaoying frequently raised their glasses, pressuring Wang Feng to drink. Wang Feng, who had a

low . When he tried to refuse, Sun Nan got angry, patting his chest and saying, "It's

so close to your house, what's wrong with drinking a little more? I'll just take you home."

Wang Feng thought about it and agreed, remembering that Li Wen'er's final exam results were also out, and her scores had improved significantly.

Li Wen'er's mother had even given him a large red envelope for this, which made Wang Feng somewhat proud.

He decided to drink freely and started drinking, but before the banquet was even over, he was so drunk he was slumped over the table, unable to get up.

Yuan Ziyi hadn't drunk any alcohol, and seeing everyone enjoying themselves, she didn't stop them. But when she saw Wang Feng was really drunk,

she panicked and quickly paid the bill. Seeing that Xia Shaoying had also drunk quite a bit, she had Qian Qiming and Qin Hairong escort her

home, while she and Sun Nan helped Wang Feng home.

Unexpectedly, Sun Nan's alcohol tolerance wasn't very high either. Stepping out of the restaurant and into the wind, his legs went weak. He

staggered and helped Wang Feng to the elevator at his apartment building, then collapsed to the ground, refusing to get up.

Yuan Ziyi was both angry and anxious. Having no other choice, she abandoned Sun Nan and struggled to help Wang Feng up the elevator. Reaching Wang Feng's

door, she took the keys from his pocket, opened the door, and practically dragged him inside.

Wang Feng was already completely drunk. After this ordeal, he bent over and vomited

all over the floor as soon as he entered, then collapsed. Yuan Ziyi couldn't hold him back and could only watch helplessly as he lay on the floor where

he had just vomited.

Seeing Wang Feng so disheveled, she couldn't just leave. Reluctantly, Yuan Ziyi took off Wang Feng's soiled outer garment and

struggled to pull him up, dragging him to the bedroom bed. Then she noticed his pants were also stained with vomit, so she

took those off as well. She stripped him down to his underwear, hesitated for a moment, then, thinking no one would see, simply took it

all off .

Seeing Wang Feng's penis, Yuan Ziyi blushed crimson. She patted her chest to

compose herself, then fetched a damp towel from the bathroom and carefully wiped the grime from his face and body.

When she got to his crotch, she hesitated, only wiping the outer edge. Unexpectedly, Wang Feng, due to the alcohol,

was full of energy, and stimulated, his penis became erect.

Yuan Ziyi panicked and turned her head away, but after a while, she regained her composure and looked again, only to see his penis still

hard and erect. She steeled herself, roughly wiped him with the towel, then

rummaged for new underwear to change him into. She then cleaned the mess on the floor, threw the dirty clothes into the washing machine, and

started washing.

Exhausted from her busy work, Yuan Ziyi was drenched in sweat. After checking the room to make sure nothing was missing, she turned

off the lights and went downstairs.

Back downstairs, she found Sun Nan still slumped on the floor near the elevator, head tilted to one side, fast asleep. Frustrated

and angry, she slapped him a few times, which actually brought him back to consciousness. Yuan Ziyi helped him to the security guard's

office, borrowed a strong cup of tea for him, and Sun Nan finally woke up

. Seeing that Yuan Ziyi had taken care of him, he felt extremely embarrassed and insisted that she go home first.

Seeing that Sun Nan was alright, Yuan Ziyi left with peace of mind. Sun Nan rested in the security guard's office for a while before

taking a taxi home.
