【Youthful Days】(12)

12. A Visit to His Hometown

The heavy workload of studying made the days fly by, and in the blink of an eye, the last mock exam before the actual exam was over

. Xia Shaoying's math and physics scores improved by more than 30 points compared to the last mock exam. Her homeroom teacher,

Mr. Fan, was amazed and also learned about Wang Feng's review experience, even having him share it with the whole class.

The day Xia Shaoying received her mock exam paper, she went straight to Wang Feng's house after school to ask him to analyze it.

Wang Feng spent several hours analyzing it for her, highlighting several key points for review before she excitedly left. The college

entrance exam, which determines the fate of countless people, took place as scheduled. Wang Feng performed as expected. Based on the post-exam answer

key , his estimated score far exceeded the previous year's cutoff score for the Computer Science major at H University,

which he had listed as his application. Attending H University was a certainty.

Therefore, Wang Feng began planning to find a place to rent near H University.

He would need to stay in the university dormitory, but he planned to stay outside on weekends. Tutoring and part-time jobs had irregular hours,

so staying outside would be more convenient.

The new campus of H University used to be located in the suburbs, but it has now been designated as a development zone, making it much more lively. However, the population

density is still lower than in the city center, and the rent is significantly cheaper than in Wang Feng's current neighborhood. Wang Feng quickly

found a suitable apartment near H University. It was a multi-story residential area built five years ago, and the overall environment was well-

maintained . There were also small apartments available, one-bedroom units of about 40 square meters.

After viewing the apartment through a real estate agent, Wang Feng was satisfied. Although the agent was only renting on behalf of the landlord, they kept urging

Wang Feng to buy it. Wang Feng said he was just a student, but the agent, with persuasive words, said: "Buying a house shouldn't be about whether you have money,

but about whether it has investment value. This area is home to many universities and high-tech companies, with huge appreciation potential.

After you graduate in four years, if you sell the apartment, you could probably earn back your tuition fees for those four years of university .

" Wang Feng was tempted. Although the apartment was on a high floor, the seventh floor, the landlord

only wanted a little over 2,000 yuan per square meter, bringing the total price to just over 100,000 yuan, which was enough for his current savings. However,

if you add in the agency fee, transaction tax, etc., it still seems a little short.

Seeing Wang Feng's hesitation, the agent pulled out their trump card—a discount. After calculation,

including all the costs of buying the house, Wang Feng's savings were not only enough, but the remaining money was enough to cover a semester's tuition and living expenses at H University.

So the purchase was settled. Signing the contract, paying the deposit, meeting with the landlord

to complete took a whole week. Once all the formalities were completed, Wang Feng realized a serious problem:

what if he didn't get into H University? Although his score was definitely high enough, it was not uncommon for students to be admitted to

their first-choice .

Wang Feng, who had originally planned to move in as soon as possible, immediately abandoned the idea and decided to wait for the admission notice.

If he really couldn't get into H University, he would have to sell the house; as for the losses from all this trouble, he didn't need to mention them.

While anxiously waiting, the exam results came out, 3 points higher than Wang Feng's estimated score.

Soon after, calls came from classmates, sharing updates—some excited, some disappointed, but

most had performed reasonably well. Sun Nan had also done well; when he called, he was already

on his way to Tibet. Xia Shaoying called excitedly to tell him that her score was above last year's

cutoff , and barring any unforeseen circumstances, she should be accepted.

Then the cutoff scores were released, and students began receiving their acceptance letters. When Wang Feng received

his long-awaited letter, he finally felt relieved. He no longer felt the urge to move immediately; instead, he took

the letter and boarded a long-distance bus back to his old town to share the good news with his grandmother. She had called several times to inquire about his exams

, and she would be overjoyed to see him again.

On the way, Wang Feng received a call from Xia Shaoying.

"Wang Feng! I received my acceptance letter! To the School of Media Studies at H University!"

Xia Shaoying's excitement was palpable.

"That's wonderful, congratulations!"

Wang Feng replied sincerely.

"I'm so happy! I never thought I could get into H University. Thank you so much, I wouldn't

have made it ..."

"Uh, it's all thanks to your hard work."

"No, no, it's all thanks to you, without you there would be no me."

Xia Shaoying was almost incoherent: "Where are you? I'll come find you."

"Uh? I'm not in the city anymore, I went home to see my grandma."

"What? When did you leave? You didn't even tell me."

Xia Shaoying said disappointedly, "Oh, I almost forgot, did you receive your acceptance letter from H University?"

"Yes."

Wang Feng said.

"That's great, we'll be classmates again. By the way, where does your grandma live?"

"Ancient town."

"Hmm, I think I've heard you mention it. Well then, I'll come over now, I really want to thank you in person."

Xia Shaoying said.

"Don't."

Wang Feng was startled and said, "It's so far, let me go back first."

"How can I not come? I have to."

Xia Shaoying's straightforward temper flared up again.

Wang Feng felt a terrible headache coming on. He said, "Okay, I'll go home to visit Grandma and go back in two weeks.

Besides, H University will be starting soon, so I need to make some preparations, right? And how can your parents let you go

so far away alone?"

"Hmm... alright then. You must call me when you get back."

Xia Shaoying finally gave in.

"Okay, I'll contact you when I get back."

After hanging up, Wang Feng shook his head helplessly.

The long-distance bus arrived at the ancient town. Grandma's house wasn't far from the station; it was only a 10-minute walk.

When they arrived home, Grandma was overjoyed to see her grandson. When she learned that he had been admitted to H University, she was even happier

and hurriedly went out to make some delicious food for her grandson.

Wang Feng was worried about Grandma going out alone, so he put down his bag and quickly followed her out.

Along the way, Grandma would say to acquaintances, "This is my grandson. He got into university; he's a university student now." Wang Feng could only put on a well-behaved smile and accept the blessings from uncles, aunts, grandfathers, and grandmothers

he had met before and those he hadn't .

Grandma took Wang Feng to the market to buy fish, meat, and vegetables, which Wang Feng carried home. Before they even reached the door,

he received another call, this time from Xia Shaoying.

"Wang Feng! Where are you? I'm at the ancient town's long-distance bus station."

"Wow!"

Wang Feng was stunned. "How did you get here so quickly?"

"Yes! I just came. Come pick me up!"

Xia Shaoying said smugly on the phone and hung up immediately.

"Who's here?"

Grandma, sharp of hearing, asked.

"My classmate. She also got into H University. She said she wanted to come visit, but I didn't agree. But she just came anyway...

"

Wang Feng said.

"Your classmate? She's a university student now. Where is she? Go pick her up quickly!"

Grandma said.

Wang Feng sighed and helped Grandma turn around and head back to the station.

When they arrived at the station, they saw Xia Shaoying standing at the exit with a small bag on her back. Xia Shaoying

saw , and waved to him with a grin. She ran over and went straight to her grandmother's other side, taking her

arm and saying with a smile, "Are you Grandma? I'm Xia Shaoying, Wang Feng's classmate."

"Oh, hello, Xia! What a pretty girl!"

Grandma said with a smile.

"Grandma, you're so healthy! Wang Feng always mentions you at school,"

Xia Shaoying said.

"Really? Honestly, why would he mention a useless old woman like me?"

Grandma's face lit up with a smile.

"Not at all. Your grandson is the best student in our school, isn't it all thanks to your excellent parenting?"

Xia Shaoying said with a smile.

Xia Shaoying's sweet words made Grandma happier and happier, and she found him more and more pleasing to the eye, completely ignoring her serious grandson, Wang Feng

.

As Xia Shaoying spoke, she would occasionally glance at Wang Feng, her face full of smugness, leaving Wang Feng speechless.

Back home, Grandma busied herself preparing dinner, and Xia Shaoying rolled up her sleeves to help, while Wang Feng picked up a broom

and cleaned the house. Grandma lived a simple and hardworking life, yet her home was always spotless.

After dinner, Grandma asked where Xia Shaoying was staying. Knowing she hadn't found a place yet, she quickly said, "

Just stay at home, there are plenty of rooms."

So Wang Feng's room was vacated, and he moved into his father's old room.

That evening, Wang Feng went to say goodnight to Grandma. Grandma took Wang Feng's hand and whispered, "This girl

is really pleasing to the eye, is she really your classmate?"

Wang Feng quickly replied, "Grandma, don't overthink it, she really is my classmate."

Grandma said, "Grandson, you're a college student now, not a child anymore. You'll have to take responsibility if anything happens

."

Wang Feng repeatedly agreed and fled back to his room.

Nothing more was said that night.

The next day, Wang Feng got up. He found Xia Shaoying already up, sitting in the living room chatting with Grandma.

After breakfast, Grandma urged Wang Feng to take Xia Shaoying out to play.

Xia Shaoying went back to her room to change first. She emerged a short while later, already dressed in light-colored long-sleeved quick-drying

clothes , hiking boots, and a sun hat—she looked vibrant, healthy, and radiant.

As soon as she came out, Wang Feng was about to ask her where she planned to go.

Xia Shaoying smiled first, "I'm sorry, Wang Feng. I'm sorry for the sudden visit and the trouble I've caused you and your grandmother."

Wang Feng replied, "Not at all, I just didn't expect you to come so suddenly. Actually, after the college entrance exam, I should relax

a bit ."

"Oh, right,"

Wang Feng suddenly remembered a serious question and hurriedly asked, "Do your family know you're coming?"

Xia Shaoying smiled, "I told them I was going to visit a classmate in the ancient town."

Wang Feng waited a while but didn't hear anything further, so he couldn't help but ask again, "And then? Did your parents agree?"

"Of course!"

Xia Shaoying said, "They rarely interfere in my affairs. I basically travel independently every summer vacation, so they

trust me completely."

Wang Feng exclaimed in surprise, "That's amazing! Where have you been?"

"Lijiang, Huangshan, Zhangjiajie, Guilin..."

Xia Shaoying counted on her fingers, rattling off the names of more than a dozen places in one breath, and finally said proudly to Wang Feng:

"How about it? Scared by me, huh?"

Wang Feng cupped his hands in a gesture of respect and said, "Impressive, impressive. Since you've been to so many famous mountains and rivers, this little ancient town

is nothing to you. But even a small place has its charms. Let me take you to a few places..."

The ancient town was his hometown, so he knew exactly where to go and what to do.

Wang Feng decided to take her to the mountains outside the town first. There was a mountain spring on the mountain, its water overflowing to form a

stream that flowed through the forest and over a small, secluded slope. Unidentified wildflowers and grasses grew on the slope.

Because of its high elevation, it offered a panoramic view of the town and was quiet and deserted, making it an excellent place to relax.

When he was a child, Wang Feng used to keep this place as his secret spot and often played here alone.

Although he hadn't been here for a long time, Wang Feng still remembered the way. He led Xia Shaoying through the forest, winding east and

west along the paths for about an hour, finally arriving after passing a section of cliff that was thrilling but safe.

Turning the corner of the mountain wall, a breathtaking view suddenly opened up before them. The scenery here was just as beautiful and tranquil as before.

"Wow! It's so beautiful!"

Xia Shaoying exclaimed excitedly, sometimes standing on tiptoe to gaze at the distant town, sometimes

bending down to pluck an unnamed wildflower to admire, and sometimes squatting by the stream to scoop up a handful of water,

never stopping for a moment.

Wang Feng found a rock by the stream to sit down and rest, watching Xia Shaoying wander around with a smile.

"It's so beautiful!"

Xia Shaoying, who hadn't noticed Wang Feng's presence for a while, jumped to his side and asked, "How did you find such a

place?"

"When I was little, I was playing around and once went upstream, and I accidentally discovered this place,"

Wang Feng said with a smile. "Later, when I was feeling down, I would come here to sit for a while."

"Yes, in such a beautiful place, no bad mood can be dispelled,"

Xia Shaoying waved her hand and then sat down next to Wang Feng.

The summer heat, coupled with her busy schedule, left Xia Shaoying's face flushed. A gentle

breeze carried a faint milky scent emanating from her.

"Is that her natural fragrance?"

Wang Feng wondered.

"So hot,"

Xia Shaoying said. She then rolled up her trousers, revealing her two snow-white legs, and took off her shoes and socks, dipping her feet

into the stream.

"Ah, so comfortable,"

Xia Shaoying sighed, closing her eyes in apparent enjoyment.

"Be careful,"

Wang Feng warned, "This is spring water, it's quite cold."

"It's alright, I'll be fine after a while,"

Xia Shaoying said, splashing her pinkish-white feet in the stream. "Tell me about yourself."

"Hmm? What about me?"

"We've been classmates for three years, and I still don't know you very well."

"Hmm? You don't know me very well, yet you dared to come all alone? This place is deserted, aren't you afraid

I'll sell you off?"

Wang Feng said casually, unable to resist teasing her.

"Sure. Sell me and I'll help you count the money,"

Xia Shaoying said nonchalantly.

After saying that, the two realized the topic was somewhat ambiguous and stopped, sitting quietly for a while.

Xia Shaoying spoke again, "Wang Feng."

"Hmm."

"Tell me about how you grew up here. Oh, by the way, where are your parents?"

"My parents?"

Wang Feng smiled bitterly.

Whether it was because he was reliving the familiar environment of his childhood, or because of his trust in Xia Shaoying, he slowly

began

to tell her about his mother's death, his father's long-term business trips, his grandmother raising him, and even his resentment towards his father.

Xia Shaoying listened intently, occasionally interjecting, "Really?"

"And then?"

"Later, after I got into the city's No. 1 High School, I rarely came back except to visit my grandmother during winter and summer vacations." After

Wang Feng finished speaking, he felt much better.

"Hmm, although it's not a story of deep suffering, your story is still very engaging,"

Xia Shaoying nodded.

Wang Feng laughed heartily.
