I won't go into the details of the hardship (I remember the hard seat carriage was packed, and the smell of instant noodles and sausages filled the air). By the time I arrived in Shenzhen, I had almost taken off my winter coat. Damn, having never traveled far from home before, I never imagined that I could wear short sleeves in the dead of winter in Shenzhen! I searched my entire bag but couldn't find a single short-sleeved shirt. Embarrassed, I could only wear my thermal underwear and squeeze onto the bus, feeling like a dog in the heat. Finally, following my friend's directions, I transferred buses twice and arrived at my first stop in Shenzhen (Nanshan Moon Bay). My friend, a childhood friend, worked at the dock. I ate fried rice noodles for the first time in my life (I'd never eaten rice noodles or rice noodle rolls before in northern China). I shared a bed with my friend, who lived in a large shared room with over ten other people. The room had several bunk beds separated by a curtain. These people came from all over the country, working in various professions—cleaners, gas deliverymen, factory workers—and speaking their own dialects… I figured I'd get used to it, and that I'd find a job and move to a new place in a few days. But reality hit me like a ton of bricks, a blow that really stung...
After resting at a friend's for a day, I started looking for work. Back then, cell phones weren't as advanced as they are now; you had to go to job fairs, buy tickets or monthly passes. I was initially confident I'd find work quickly, but after a few days, I'd sent out a lot of resumes and received almost no interview calls. Basically, if you didn't have experience, you were out of the running. A month passed quickly. I'd been to countless job fairs—Luohu Job Fair, Bao'an Job Fair, Western Job Fair, and so on—consuming countless tickets, but still no job. My money was dwindling. Back in college, a bus ride cost only 1 yuan and took you all over the city. Coming to Shenzhen, I learned there were segmented fares, and I often took the wrong route on various loop lines. Looking back, it seems amazing—I managed to travel across most of Shenzhen in just over a month! I needed a border pass to cross the border, and I had to be careful of pickpockets tearing my clothes. Shenzhen has so many people, and so many jobs I didn't know existed (sometimes, to save on bus fare, I'd walk several stops, and the bus stops were plastered with stickers advertising princes and princesses, daily pay, starting at 300 yuan a day. Back then, when I couldn't find work, all of these seemed perfect for me, especially the salary, haha…). I asked a friend, and he said it was for YA (a type of sexual activity). "Want to do it?" Another profession I discovered while trying to save money by walking around Shenzhen was the abundance of hair salons (WZ had the most). I won more than all the money I brought with me when I came to Shenzhen. That night, I had beer and snacks with my friends—the most lavish meal I'd had since arriving in Shenzhen! Absolutely perfect! The following days were utterly disheartening. I spent my time in internet cafes researching job postings, completely abandoning any more job hunting expenses like entrance fees and bus fares. I knew I'd get absolutely nothing for the next few rounds. Then, an invitation from a junior high classmate (let's call her H, she works at TCL in Shenzhen, we sat next to each other in junior high, and she had a crush on me – just kidding, don't judge me) brought me back to reality. I realized I still needed to find a job; relying on buying jobs would only lead to my downfall. I went to H's address, and wow, TCL is amazing! H is even more amazing (she works as a clerk in a small TCL lab). H was noticeably prettier than my junior high classmate, dressed very fashionably, and even treated me to KFC (my first time ever eating KFC, so many firsts happened in Shenzhen!). When I asked about her salary, it was almost 3,000 RMB a month. I was instantly... Under pressure, I felt like a complete waste, earning nothing and just wandering around all day. So I decided to look for a job again. H really helped me a lot, telling me how to register on online job search websites, how to find a job, and so on. Finally, after my unremitting efforts, I found my first job, a JQE at a Taiwanese-owned factory. I immediately told H the good news and even treated her to KFC (don't blame me for prioritizing her over my friend; my friend from the same village also arranged it later, a leisure club, which was also a first for me, haha).
