Profound Memories - Little Lively 2

Suibin is located on the Songhua River, a small county town not far from us. A few hours later, we met at the Suibin Shopping Mall. From quite a distance, we saw Xiao Huopo waving and laughing at us from across the street. She ran and skipped over to meet us.
"Big brother, sister-in-law, sis. Aren't you cold? Hurry home, it's not far." Judging from Xiao Huopo's voice, she was a straightforward girl. She chattered away like a machine gun, leading us across the street. Xiao Huopo jumped to a man's side, took his arm, and said, "My husband." Lao Nian was about my height. The young woman had a small, delicate face and pretty features. She was about 150cm tall and quite petite. She spoke quickly. The whole way there, she chattered away, keeping the three of us busy. When we got downstairs, she pointed upstairs and said, "That's my house." Looking up, we saw the "double happiness" character on the window was still there, though faded.
As soon as we entered, she called out, "Honey, hurry up and cook!" Turning back to us, she said, "Brother, sister-in-law, sister. Are you hungry? The vegetables are all chopped, just waiting to be cooked. The vegetables are good today (a Northeastern expression meaning the vegetables are delicious)." Judging from the interior decoration and the clothes the young woman and Lao Nian were wearing, we were considered a well-off family in our area. Lao Nian went to the kitchen and started clattering away. The young woman busied herself, helping us put away our clothes and showing my wife and Hui around to each room. I watched TV and drank tea. The young woman was the outgoing type, very sociable. Soon, the women were all warm and friendly, leaving me feeling a bit left out.
That meal was incredibly enjoyable; I still remember it vividly. Soon, dishes were served one after another. And let me tell you, the food was truly impressive. A table full of wild game: braised goose, stewed wild boar, and river crucian carp. A dish of red sausage and white meat platter, and a cold braised fern salad. Three small vegetarian dishes filled the entire table. Little Lively directed Old Man Nian on where to take things; it was clear that Little Lively was the one in charge at home.
Little Lively didn't even ask our opinions. Each of us poured a small glass of strong liquor. While pouring, he kept saying, "Drink some baijiu, it'll warm you up. Homemade grain liquor." Seeing Little Lively's enthusiasm, my wife and Hui didn't refuse. Old Man Nian had barely sat down when Little Lively raised his glass, stood up, and recited a welcoming speech. We followed suit, raising our glasses and standing up as well. After finishing his speech, Little Lively downed half a glass in one gulp. He coughed a few times through his nose and said, "Brother and sister-in-law, sister." "Let me show you how." The three of us exchanged glances and laughed. This little girl was so straightforward. Eat, eat. The lively girl picked up food for each of us, muttering, "Try my husband's cooking. I can't cook, but I'm good at washing dishes." And let me tell you, Lao Nian's cooking was really good. The dishes were delicious, and the three of us ate while praising them. We chatted about everyday things. Lao Nian hardly said anything, occasionally raising his glass to take a sip with us.
After a few drinks, the lively girl abruptly changed the subject, "Brother and sister-in-law, sister. How long have you been doing that?" Because Lao Nian had been quite quiet, and we'd been talking about everyday things, the lively girl's comment made the atmosphere a little awkward.
I was trying to figure out how to respond when my wife said, "Oh, it's all because of your older brother, it hasn't been that long." The lively girl stared at my wife with wide eyes and said, "Sister-in-law, isn't it exciting?" My wife didn't know how to respond. But in our family, I pester you every day, and you just won't agree." Turning to us, she said, "If he still doesn't agree, I'll show him what the Hulunbuir Grassland is like." Hui asked, puzzled, "Hulunbuir?" His wife said, "It's all green." Hui suddenly understood, and the atmosphere in the room became lively.
