My forum inbox finally showed an unread message. I quickly opened it: "Hi college student, I'm also in Qixia, not far from your university town. I'm a bit older than you, you can call me 'sister.' Visit my profile and leave your contact information, I'll add you."
Back then, mutual visits on the forum earned points, and many sections and permissions, including adding friends and searching, required points. So, I didn't initially take this kind of enticing message about mutual visits seriously. Out of politeness and with a hint of hope, I visited her profile. It was quiet, with few friends and no updates. There was a single photo in her album, but it was incredibly beautiful; it didn't look real, more like a picture of a beautiful woman downloaded from the internet. Back then, there was no such thing as an internet celebrity, and becoming famous online was extremely difficult because most entertainment and media resources were controlled by large companies, unlike the current era of rampant self-media. I became increasingly certain she was a scammer. But then I thought, what could she possibly scam me out of? I had no money, no house, no car; I was just a recent college graduate. So I sent her a flower on her forum page and left my QQ number.
Some time later, probably on a weekend afternoon, I woke up from a nap to a friend request on QQ. This was my alternate account, the one I used specifically for making friends with my spouse. Could it really be her?
I opened the friend request; her nickname was "Goddess of Liberty," a rather unsophisticated, even somewhat tacky, username. Her profile picture was indeed a photo from the forum. Wow, could I have actually cast a wide net and landed a beauty?
I accepted her friend request. I was in a social studies class at the time and was out running around. After accepting, I didn't immediately message her. After finishing class, I switched to my alternate account and found three messages.
Statue of Liberty: Tell me about yourself?
Statue of Liberty: Where are you?
Statue of Liberty: How rude! Okay, I'll delete you then.
When I tried to message her again, I found we were no longer friends. Holy crap, she really deleted me.
If she really is the woman in her profile picture, she's definitely a beauty. It's understandable that such a beauty would be a little arrogant and temperamental. But a woman who deletes you without waiting for any reply or explanation is no ordinary woman. She probably has many suitors and wouldn't need a single guy like me. I think I should try harder. So I tried to add her as a friend, but when I tried to add her back, I found I'd already been blocked. Holy crap, this really got my competitive spirit going. I immediately added her using my main account, which is my work, life, and study account, and then I stared intently at my phone screen, waiting for her response.
