Pigsy Returns to Gao Village

(I) Colorful clouds gather atop Mount Ling, auspicious clouds rise in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Inside the Great Thunderclap Temple on Mount Sumeru, Tang Sanzang and his five disciples are receiving titles from the Buddha.
"Tang Sanzang, in your previous life you were my second disciple, named Jin Chanzi. Because you did not listen to the Dharma and disrespected my great teachings, I demoted your true spirit and sent you to be reborn in the Eastern Land. Now you are glad to have returned to the Buddha's teachings. You have traveled thousands of miles to retrieve the true scriptures, which is of great merit. Therefore, you are promoted to a higher position and attain the true fruition. You are the Sandalwood Merit Buddha.
" "Sun Wukong, because you made a great disturbance in the Heavenly Palace, I used my immense power to suppress you under the Five Elements Mountain. Fortunately, the heavenly calamity has been satisfied, and you have returned to my teachings. I am also pleased that you concealed your evil and promoted good, subdued demons and eliminated monsters, and completed the task from beginning to end. Therefore, you are promoted to a higher position and attain the true fruition. You are the Victorious Fighting Buddha."
"Pig Wuneng, you were originally the Water God of the Milky Way, Marshal Tianpeng. For your drunken escapade with Chang'e at the Peach Banquet, you were banished to the mortal realm and reincarnated as an animal. Fortunately, you remembered your human form and committed evil deeds in the Cloud Cave of Fuling Mountain. You gladly returned to the Great Teaching, joining my Buddhist order to protect Tang Sanzang on his journey to the West. However, you still harbor mischievous thoughts and lustful desires. Because of your merit in carrying the load, you are promoted to a higher rank and become the Clean Altar Messenger.
" "Sha Wujing, you were originally a great general. For breaking a glass goblet at the Peach Banquet, you were banished to the mortal realm, falling into the Flowing Sand River where you harmed and ate living beings. Fortunately, you returned to my teaching, sincerely respecting and protecting the holy monk. For your merit in leading the horse up the mountain, you are promoted to a higher rank and become a Golden-bodied Arhat."
"White Dragon Horse, you were originally the son of the Dragon King of the West Sea. Because you disobeyed your father's orders and committed the crime of filial impiety, you were fortunate enough to become a disciple of me, a Buddhist monk, and carried Tang Sanzang on his journey to the West. Therefore, I have
promoted you to the rank of one of the Eight Heavenly Dragons." Pigsy exclaimed, "They all became Buddhas, why am I just a Cleansing Altar Messenger?" The Buddha
said, "Because you have a strong mouth and a large body, and a large appetite, many in the four continents of the world admire our teachings. For all Buddhist ceremonies, I will have you cleanse the altar; this is a rank that brings you honor. How can it not be good?"
Pigsy hesitated upon hearing this, remaining silent for a long time. The Buddha, being who he was, immediately knew Pigsy's thoughts.
"What else do you need? Speak freely."
Bajie kowtowed and said, "Back then, as Marshal Tianpeng, I commanded 100,000 naval troops and was full of arrogance. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and fell into the animal realm. Now, I have fortunately attained enlightenment, but I am still in the body of an animal, which is very troublesome. Buddha, please be merciful and give me back a natural human body."
Wukong, who was listening nearby, rushed up and gave Bajie a sharp rap on the head, laughing and scolding, "You dead pig head, still trying to be vain? Your brother Monkey doesn't care about such things."
Buddha smiled, "The love of beauty is something everyone has, let alone Buddha. Bajie's frankness is his true nature. Very well, I will give you back a natural human body."
As soon as he finished speaking, Buddha's light shone, and Bajie immediately felt refreshed and invigorated. All 36,000 pores on his body felt as if they were soaking in a hot spring, and he felt extremely comfortable and pleasant.
"Bajie, what do you think?" Buddha pointed a flower, and a precious mirror appeared before Bajie's eyes. Bajie stared intently and was greatly surprised. In the mirror was a tall, slender figure with a jade-like face and red lips, clear eyebrows and bright eyes—exactly the same appearance he had in the celestial realm. Bajie looked down and touched his face; the figure in the mirror did the same.
Bajie was filled with both sorrow and joy, overwhelmed with emotion.
"Your appearance has changed. Your position as the Cleanser of the Altar can be relinquished. Since you are naturally affectionate, you may be called the Amorous Messenger."
Bajie hurriedly kowtowed deeply to thank Buddha for his grace. The five disciples and their master took their leave.
"Buddha knows that Bajie is naturally lustful. Now that he has regained his human form, I'm afraid there will be many troubles," said Guanyin Bodhisattva from the side.
"It's alright, let him be. Buddha also has a heart, Buddha also has feelings. It's not bad for the world to have an Amorous Buddha," Buddha said with a smile.
Meanwhile, outside the hall, Tang Sanzang and his disciples were discussing their future plans.
"It's been so long since I left Flower Fruit Mountain, I've missed you all. Flower Fruit Mountain is picturesque and beautiful, a perfect place for self-cultivation. Master and Junior Brother, why don't you come with me? Delicious fruits and beautiful springs, wouldn't that be wonderful!"
"Amitabha, then I'll stay with you for a few days."
"Wujing can't bear to part with Master, I wish to go with you."
Wukong beamed, turning to Bajie who was standing silently to the side.
"You pig-headed idiot... uh... no... Second Junior Brother, are you coming or not?"
Sun Wukong looked at the handsome young Bajie in front of him. If he hadn't witnessed the Buddha's transformation, he wouldn't have been able to reconcile the image of Bajie with his own eyes.
"Master, Eldest Brother, Junior Brother Sha, I... I... I won't go... I want to go back to Gao Village first... I'll come to Flower Fruit Mountain to visit you!" Bajie stammered.
"You damned pig, you're still a pig even in a different body! You've already become a Buddha, and you still..." Sun Wukong was about to explode in anger, wanting to force Bajie to go with him.
"Wukong, everything is preordained. The Buddha bestowed this title upon Bajie for this reason. He absolutely must go this time, don't stop him." Tang Sanzang replied to Jin Chanzi Buddha, understanding everything perfectly.
"Alright, Master, Brother Sha, let's go." Wukong leaped into the sky, followed by Tang Sanzang and Sha Wujing.
Bajie watched his master and his three brothers depart, a feeling of reluctance welling up in his heart. On the journey to the West, the journey was long, filled with demon-slaying, playful fights, deep bonds between master and disciples, and strong brotherhood—how could Bajie forget them! Yet, a person haunted his dreams, someone he couldn't go to, someone he couldn't forget.
Every time the night was quiet, he would think of his wife—Gao Cuilan.
He recalled his first encounter with his beloved, the breathtaking feeling, and their wedding night. Gao Cuilan, dressed in a bright red wedding gown, her snow-white face blushing shyly, captivated him, who, disguised as a tall, strong man,
was utterly mesmerized. He gently loosened her robes and caressed her, and she, overcome with passion, wept softly. The couple, deeply in love, flew away together. But then, drunkenness led to trouble, revealing his true form. His beloved wife was terrified, and from then on, turmoil raged, and they were separated forever… He himself was forced to accompany his father on a long journey to the West. Pigsy was filled with pain and regret, unable to control his emotions… “On the journey west, the longing for you fills Pigsy’s heart with tears.”
“Cuilan, my wife, are you alright?” Pigsy instinctively reached for the well-preserved garment at his waist, a gift from Cuilan before her departure. He had always been reluctant to use it, remembering the look in Cuilan’s eyes at parting, a look that, besides fear, seemed to hold a deep sorrow.
The reason why Bajie begged Buddha to remove his animal form was that he wanted to be a human and stay with Gao Cuilan forever. This was the driving force behind his journey to the West, undeterred by any hardship.
"Cuilan, I'm back." Bajie rode the clouds and headed straight for Gao Village.
(II) A thousand miles is but a moment to a deity.
"I'm here! I'm finally back in Gao Village, my home!" Bajie was overjoyed. He pressed down on the cloud and was about to descend when suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his heart and almost fell off the cloud.
What was going on? Bajie was puzzled. He had already become a Buddha, so why did he have such symptoms? He did some calculations with his fingers, and his face turned pale and then red. He was both happy and anxious. Without thinking, he immediately flew towards the nearby Fuling Mountain.
At this time, on the top of Fuling Mountain, a crowd was making noise and shouting. What were they doing?
Looking closely, there was a platform built on a flat area on the top of the mountain. Upon closer inspection, the platform was actually made of firewood. On the platform lay a package, and from inside came the wailing of a baby! Good heavens! What were they doing? Were they praying for the baby's well-being? The villagers surrounding the platform were in a frenzy, holding torches and shouting, "Burn him! Burn him!"
"No...no...my son...my son!...please...don't..." A young, beautiful woman rushed out from the crowd, her head wrapped in a silk handkerchief, tears streaming down her face, crying heart-wrenchingly as she ran towards the platform.
"Daughter...no...don't go..." An elderly couple grabbed the woman's hands, tears streaming down their faces.
"Fate, it's all fate!"
"You married a monster, and now you're pregnant with a demon child. It will take three years to give birth! You'll never have peace until you burn him alive! Miss, I'm so sorry!" a villager said viciously. "Burn!" He threw his torch onto the pile of firewood, and other villagers followed suit. The flames leaped on the firewood, and the beautiful flames seemed to make the baby on the pile feel a deadly danger. His cries grew louder.
"No...no...my child...Mother is with you..." The young woman seemed to have unleashed a surge of maternal power. She suddenly broke free from her relatives' grasp, stumbled towards the firewood, and hugged the baby tightly, sitting down in the middle of the pile.
"Cuilan, come back, Cuilan!" The old woman fainted. The villagers were stunned by the beautiful woman's actions. However, a mountain wind rose, fanning the flames, which expanded and converged towards the center of the firewood. The flickering firelight reflected on the beautiful woman's face, making her appear so pure and beautiful.
In the blink of an eye, at this critical moment, a ray of light appeared in the sky, and rain began to fall right on the platform. The fire was extinguished instantly by the water. Even more strangely, a lotus flower bloomed above the heads of the mother and child, shielding them from the rain without leaving a single wet spot. Seeing this extraordinary phenomenon, the villagers, whether timid or bold, were terrified and prostrated themselves on the ground, repeatedly kowtowing and begging for forgiveness from Heaven.
"Amitabha Buddha, humans have compassion, why do you harm living beings?" The villagers looked up and saw a lotus flower in the sky, upon which sat a handsome man, ethereal and graceful. Behind him was a dazzling halo, his hands clasped together, forming a thousand lotus flowers that danced in the air—a truly magnificent sight.
“Bodhisattva, it’s like this. Three years ago, our Miss Gao from Gao Village married a pig monster. Although the monk with the thunder god’s face took her away, Miss Gao became pregnant with a monster’s child. It took three years to give birth, and the villagers are afraid that it will become a demon in the future, so… so…” A slightly bolder villager trembled as he reported to the Bodhisattva.
The Bodhisattva in the air was none other than Pigsy. He looked with deep affection at Gao Cuilan, who was still delirious and clung to her child, refusing to let go. He snorted and said, “What pig monster? Her father was originally Marshal Tianpeng in heaven. He descended to the mortal world and formed a celestial bond with Gao Cuilan. He followed the holy monk of the Tang Dynasty on his pilgrimage to the West, endured hardships, and finally attained enlightenment. You ignorant villagers actually called a Buddha’s seed a demon’s fetus. Quickly disperse, go home to worship Buddha and recite scriptures, and remember not to eat or drink for three days to show your repentance.”
“Yes… yes… we will definitely go to recite scriptures and worship Buddha… Amitabha… Amitabha…” The villagers clasped their hands together and bowed with each step as they walked down the mountain.
For three days, from eighty-year-old grandmothers to toddlers, no one ate or drank a single grain of rice or water, sincerely worshipping Buddha. The village even established a rule: these three days each year are days for repentance before encountering Buddha. In other words, Bajie's actions,
done to vent his anger for his wife and children, unexpectedly educated a kind and benevolent village, a meritorious deed indeed. Bajie descended from the clouds and came to the platform. Grandpa Gao and Grandma Gao, worried about their daughter, also stayed behind. They helped the waking Gao Cuilan, chanting Buddhist prayers and bowing to Bajie.
Bajie looked at his beloved wife; her slightly haggard face was still breathtakingly beautiful, her eyes, like autumn water, held a trace of sorrow.
"Thank you, Bodhisattva, for saving my child and me!"
"Wife, please rise!" Bajie stepped forward, his hands reaching out to help Gao Cuilan up. Gao Cuilan blushed, clutching her child, and hurriedly stepped aside. Although she knew he was a Bodhisattva, his handsome appearance was undeniably attractive, especially his bright eyes fixed on her face, which felt tangible and made her heart pound. She felt a pang of annoyance at Bajie for calling her "wife." "I
wonder if Miss is married now?" Bajie deliberately asked Old Man Gao. Old Man Gao respectfully replied,
"Alas, after my daughter married that long-mouthed, big-eared man, who would dare to marry her? That long-mouthed, big-eared man is still quite devoted to Cuilan. If we had known this, my husband and I wouldn't have sought out someone to exorcise the demon. My daughter and child would have had someone to rely on, and we could have made do with our lives without being bullied. Alas."
Hearing her father's words, Gao Cuilan was deeply moved, and tears streamed down her face.
"Your son-in-law, Bajie, greets my father-in-law and mother-in-law." Bajie, unable to contain his excitement, prostrated himself in a deep bow.
"You...you...you..." The two elders, Gao Taigong and his wife, were dumbfounded. Gao Cuilan stared in disbelief at the handsome man before her. Seeing their skeptical expressions, Bajie took out a treasured garment. The familiar stitches brought tears to Gao Cuilan's eyes.
"Your son-in-law accompanied the holy monk on his journey to the West to obtain the scriptures, enduring countless hardships..." Bajie recounted the various strange demons and legendary gods and Buddhas, all of which amazed them.
When he spoke of the Buddha rewarding his merits and Bajie's request to be restored to his natural human form, the elders couldn't help but look at their beloved daughter. Strangely enough, after all these trials, the elders actually hoped their daughter would accept Bajie.
Gao Cuilan gazed at Bajie, her heart surging with emotion. She had endured three years of pregnancy and countless scornful looks, and while she deeply resented the demon for ruining her life, in the quiet of the night, she couldn't help but think of his honesty and gentleness.
It turned out her husband was actually Marshal Tianpeng reincarnated, unfortunately reborn as a pig, suffering countless hardships, yet even after becoming a celestial being, his love for her remained unchanged. How many women in the world could have such an encounter? Thinking of this, happiness welled up in Gao Cuilan's eyes.
"Wah, wah..." the baby in her arms cried. "Ah... sweetie, are you hungry? Don't cry."
Cuilan hurriedly unbuttoned her clothes, revealing her snow-white, full breasts. The child suckled greedily at his mother's nipple. Bajie peered at his own flesh, finding it as beautiful as his mother's, far beyond his expectations.
"Cuilan, I... I..." Bajie looked at Gao Cuilan earnestly. Gao Cuilan couldn't help but smile, whispering, "What a fool."
