The Great Sui Emperor - Chapter 144: Li Yuanba's Courage

Yang Guang and his officials, upon seeing this, exclaimed, "This isn't a person anymore, it's a god!" Li Yuanba was then carried into the hall, circled around more than ten times, stood in the center, raised and lowered his hands more than ten times, and then swayed as he walked out of the Meridian Gate. He placed the lion in his left hand, then the one in his right, and turned back into the Meridian Gate. Yuwen Chengdu, like General Shi selling tofu, whose strength had waned, said, "I won't compete with you in strength. You've trained at home, that's why you're like this. Tomorrow, let's go to the training ground and compete in weapons and martial arts, how about it?" Li Yuanba replied, "That makes sense." At that moment, Li Shimin returned to the palace, and Li Yuan, the Duke of Tang, bid farewell to Yang Guang, returning home with only his three sons. Li Yuanba packed his armor, two hammers, and horse, waiting for dawn to go to the training ground to compete with Yuwen Chengdu.
Yuwen Huaji and Yuwen Chengdu returned to their residence to discuss the matter. They secretly dispatched five hundred skilled retainers and instructed them: "If I win tomorrow, all will be well. But if I lose, all of you come up and hack him to death." The retainers obeyed.
The next day, Emperor Yang Guang led his civil and military officials to the training ground. After the generals had finished their audience, Li Yuan, the Duke of Tang, led his three sons to meet the emperor. Yang Guang issued an edict ordering Yuwen Chengdu and Li Yuanba to duel. The two accepted the edict, left the training hall, and went to their respective teams to don their armor. Yuwen Chengdu appeared from the left team's flag, wearing a golden helmet with double phoenixes, a golden chainmail armor, riding a magnificent yellow horse, and wielding a 400-jin gilded halberd, standing imposingly on the left. From the right team's flag, Li Yuanba appeared, wearing a black gold crown with two short pheasant feathers, wearing a suit of molten iron armor, riding a white-spotted dragon steed, and wielding two 800-jin iron hammers, like a golden-winged roc descended from heaven, standing on the right. Yuwen Chengdu shouted, "Li Yuanba, prepare to die!" Before he finished speaking, he raised his gilded halberd, spurred his horse forward, and brought it down with a resounding clang! It was incredibly powerful! He seemed intent on killing Li Yuanba with a single blow. Li Yuanba, however, remained calm and unperturbed, not taking it to heart at all.
Li Yuanba raised his hammer and struck the gilded halberd with a clang, knocking it aside. Yuwen Chengdu exclaimed, "This kid's got some nerve!" and raised the halberd again. Li Yuanba struck it once more, the halberd clanging loudly, almost breaking, the impact causing Yuwen Chengdu's hands to bleed. He turned his horse to flee. Li Yuanba shouted, "Where do you think you're going!" and rode up, grabbing the horse by the waistband. Yang Guang, seeing General Tianbao captured, fearing Li Yuanba would harm Yuwen Chengdu, quickly ordered his release. Seeing Li Yuanba's bravery, Yuwen Huaji was very anxious and hurriedly shouted, "His Majesty has decreed that Yuwen Chengdu must protect the Emperor, so Young Master Li can let go." Li Yuanba thought to himself, "When I was learning martial arts in the back garden, my master repeatedly told me that if I ever encountered someone wielding a gilded halberd, I must not harm him." Hearing that His Majesty had decreed, he had no choice but to throw Yuwen Chengdu into the air.
With a thud, Yuwen Chengdu fell to the ground, urinating uncontrollably. Seeing their master fall, the three hundred retainers brandished their weapons and charged at Li Yuanba. Li Yuanba chuckled, "The scapegoats have arrived!" He swung his double hammers in all directions, striking down the twelve heroes one by one. The three hundred retainers were then swept off their horses in a flurry. Li Yuanba, victorious, tucked his hammers into his waistband, walked into the martial arts hall, dismounted, and handed over the imperial decree. Yang Guang feigned great joy and appointed Li Yuanba as the Prince of Zhao of the Western Prefecture, tasking him with guarding Taiyuan. Yang Guang then returned to the palace.
After staying for a few days, Duke Dou Jiande of Xia reported, "The dragon boats are finished. I have come to report and request Your Majesty to visit Jiangdu." Yang Guang issued an edict ordering Li Yuan and Li Yuanba to assist in the defense of Taiyuan, and Prince Qin, Li Shimin, to accompany him to Jiangdu. Li Yuan thanked the emperor and returned to Taiyuan. Yang Guang, Consort Xiao, and some of his favorite concubines resided on the first dragon boat; Prince Qin, Li Shimin, on the second; Yuwen Huaji and General Yuwen Chengdu on the third; and the civil and military officials on the fourth. The four dragon boats carried more than eight hundred people, all dressed in colorful robes, and a thousand cavalrymen protected them on both banks. The dragon boat that Yang Guang rode on was pulled by women, each dressed in five-colored clothes. Yang Guang was overjoyed to see the women on the shore, each dressed in five-colored clothes, pulling the brocade ropes.
Upon learning that Emperor Yang Guang would be traveling to Jiangdu and would inevitably pass through Siming Mountain, Meng Haigong, the Prince of Songyi of Caozhou, hastily issued eighteen forged imperial edicts, dispatching officials to various places to order troops to gather at Siming Mountain to capture the tyrannical emperor.
Li Zitong, the Prince of Shouzhou in Hebei, received an imperial edict from Meng Haigong and gathered his ministers in the palace: "The tyrannical emperor has been traveling to Jiangdu. Now, Meng Haigong, the Prince of Songyi, has arrived with a forged imperial edict, demanding that I raise an army and meet at Siming Mountain to capture the tyrannical emperor. You may send troops there." He then mustered 100,000 troops and headed to Siming Mountain.
Cheng Yaojin, the tyrant of Wagangzhai, was overjoyed to receive this forged imperial edict. He said, "I was just about to raise an army to storm Luoyang and capture the tyrant, but I didn't expect him to come here to seek his death!" He issued an edict to mobilize 200,000 troops, appointing Qin Shubao as the Grand Marshal and Pei Yuanqing as the Vanguard. He set off with his military advisor Xu Maogong and other generals, and ordered Qiu Rui to guard Wagangzhai. The three armies marched in a grand procession toward Siming Mountain.
Upon arriving at Siming Mountain, Meng Haigong had already mobilized 100,000 troops, with Shang Yiming as the marshal, and set up camp against the mountain. News arrived that the Demon King of Chaos had arrived, and Meng Haigong welcomed Cheng Yaojin into his tent. Following him, Gao Tansheng, the White Prince of Xiangzhou, led 100,000 troops, with Xiong Kuohai as the vanguard; Tang Bi, the Prince of Jinan in Shandong, led 100,000 troops, with Chu De as the marshal; Wang Bo, the Prince of Zhishi in Jining, led 100,000 troops, with Nao Tianlong as the marshal; Shen Faxing, the Prince of Shangliang in Suzhou, led 100,000 troops, with Bao Tianlong as the vanguard; Lei Dapeng, the Prince of Jingzhou in Huguang, led 100,000 troops, with Lei Saiqin as the marshal; Liu Wuzhou, the Prince of Dingyang behind the mountain, led 100,000 troops, with Song Jingang as the marshal; and Li Zitong, the Prince of Shouzhou in Hebei, led 100,000 troops, with Wu Tianxi as the vanguard. The vanguard; King Ying of Shatuo Luo led 100,000 troops to the Turks, with Tie Yanlong as commander-in-chief; King Temur of Beihai of Youzhou led 100,000 troops, with Jiajinna as commander-in-chief; King Xiao Xian of Daliang of Jiangling led 100,000 troops, with Su Hong as commander-in-chief; King Li Zhi of Jingliang of Wulin led 100,000 troops, with He Tianbao as commander-in-chief; King Zhang Chengjin of Qi of Mingzhou led 100,000 troops, with Su Dingfang as commander-in-chief; King Gao Shida of Yue of Chuzhou led 100,000 troops, with Jin Hu as commander-in-chief; King Wu Kexuan of Yongnan of Chenzhou led 100,000 troops, with Wu Long as vanguard. Du Fuwei, Zhang Shanxiang, Li Furong, and Xue Ju of Chengdu led 64 camps, totaling 2.3 million troops and 1,000 generals, who arrived successively.
Meng Haigong received them into the tent and greeted them, then they took their seats in order. Meng Haigong said, “My brothers, I have something to tell you: This tyrannical ruler has persecuted loyal officials, murdered his father and brothers, and cheated on his mother and sister-in-law—such acts are rare in history. Furthermore, he has toured Jiangdu, dredged the canal, and harmed the people. All these crimes have caused immense suffering to the people. Now, my brothers, let us work together to capture this tyrannical ruler. What do you all think?” The rebel kings replied, “Brother Meng’s words are reasonable.” They were all greatly pleased.
Xu Maogong stepped forward from the ranks and said, "Today, let's first establish a leader to command the troops from all directions." The kings all praised, "Mr. Xu's words are reasonable; we should elect Brother Cheng as the leader." Cheng Yaojin repeatedly said he dared not accept, declining the position several times. The kings said, "Brother Cheng is a brave general with strong troops, and he resides in a superior state; there's no need to insist." Cheng Yaojin, being a mere warrior, relied on Pei Yuanqing's bravery and openly accepted the position.
Xu Maogong said, "Yuwen Chengdu is the bravest in the army, capable of fighting ten thousand men. We must appoint a vanguard to capture him." The rebel kings agreed, "Sir, your words are reasonable." Wu Tianxi stepped forward from Li Zitong's ranks and said, "This humble general is willing to be the vanguard." The kings looked at him, and Shouzhou King Li Zitong said to the rebel kings, "My brothers, this is Wu Tianxi, the cousin of Marquis Wu Yunzhao of Nanyang." Cheng Yaojin was overjoyed and handed over the vanguard seal. Wu Tianxi thanked him and mounted his horse to fight.
