Brother's Lover

Male Lead: Shu Minghuai
Female Lead: Shu Yirou
Chapter 1:
The Shu family is a warm and loving family. The father is a typical civil servant, the mother is the housekeeper, and they have two beloved children. Their son, Shu Minghuai, is refined, handsome, academically excellent, sensible, and intelligent. He is meticulous in everything he does, never causing them any worry. Their daughter, Shu Yirou, has an oval face, fair skin, and is as beautiful as a lotus emerging from water. She is simple, kind, and always has a cheerful smile, making her the family's joy.
"Yirou, are you done yet?"
Shu Minghuai, having finished tidying his books, left his room and passed by his sister's room, casually urging her on his way.
"Brother, almost done, wait for me a moment." Shu Yirou's clear, anxious voice came from inside.
"Do you need my help?"
He pushed open the door and went in, only to see her frantically searching, looking for some important document.
"Brother, my report that's due today is missing! I saw it last night. If I don't hand it in today, the teacher is so strict, I'll have to retake this course this semester!"
She was frantic, a thin layer of sweat on her forehead, her cheeks flushed red with worry.
"Brother will help you find it. What did you put your report in?" "A blue folder..."
Shu Minghuai glanced around the room, then spotted a small blue trace in the corner of the bed. He strode over and retrieved the folder from the gap between the bed and the wall. Inside lay a complete report.
"Is this the one?"
"Yes!" Shu Yirou happily took it, jumping up with joy. "Finally found it!"
She looked at Shu Minghuai with admiration, her large, clear eyes brimming with intelligence and gratitude. "Brother, thank you."
She went over and hugged him tightly, planting a kiss on his cheek, just like when they were children.
Shu Minghuai's eyes were full of smiles and doting affection. "Alright, alright, let's hurry up and pack up and go downstairs for dinner. We have class later, and we can't be late."
"Okay, with you here, brother, I definitely won't be late." She smiled brightly, her heart filled with trust and admiration for him.
"You!" He raised his thick, sword-like eyebrows and pinched her delicate nose when she wasn't looking.
"Brother! I'm not a child anymore, don't pinch my nose anymore, it hurts!" She frowned.
"You need your brother to help you find what you've lost, isn't that childish behavior?"
He teased leisurely.
"Oh! Brother, you're so annoying, you're bullying me again."
Her glaring face made her look even more radiant and full of life.
"Yirou, you look prettier when you're angry." He suddenly whispered in her ear.
"You—"
After a moment's thought, she blossomed into a beautiful smile.
"Hehe, brother, I'm not falling for it. You want me to be angry? I'm not going to be angry. I'm going downstairs to eat first, I'm leaving now." With that, she grabbed her bag and dashed out of the room.
Shu Minghuai shook his head and smiled. "She's clearly just a little kid. She even wants me to close her door. Doesn't she care if I invade her privacy? She trusts me way too much... Such an innocent and straightforward personality, it's hard not to worry about her."
Downstairs, the Shu couple and Shu Yirou were having breakfast.
A simple, healthy, and nutritious Chinese breakfast: congee, spicy fermented bean curd, stir-fried water spinach, and poached eggs.
"Brother, come and eat!" Shu Yirou called out as she ate. "Come and eat quickly, I'll take you to school after you finish," Shu's father said kindly.
"Eat well, breakfast is very nutritious, so you won't be sleepy at school again," Shu's mother teased Shu Yirou with a smile.
Shu Yirou immediately blushed and glared at Shu Minghuai. "Brother, you're right, aren't you? I just accidentally dozed off..." "And
I accidentally saw you. I was sitting in the back seat by the window, and you were staring at me. You were so cute!" Shu
Yirou's eyes lit up. "Brother, so you weren't paying attention in class? You're just as bad." She teased.
"But my grades are still above average, so you don't need to worry about me. You, on the other hand, need to be careful."
She pouted. "Heaven is so unfair, brother, you're so great at everything, I can never catch up."
"Yirou, you have your cute side too. You can be affectionate, you can be the family's source of joy, you're a very important member of this family." Shu's mother comforted her.
"Mom." She called out affectionately. "But my grades at school..."
"If you don't understand anything, you can ask your brother when you get home." "Mother Shu turned to look at Shu Minghuai, who had performed exceptionally well. "Teach her when you have time."
"I will."
He gave Shu Yirou a stern look. "Every time I try to teach you, you pretend to be tired or asleep. This time, Mom has authorized me to teach you until you've mastered it, so you can't be a liar anymore."
Shu Yirou stuck out her tongue. "Fine!"
She thought she was good at acting and that's why she hadn't been caught. It turned out her brother knew everything but didn't want to expose her.
"It's almost time. Have you finished eating? If you're done, wait for me in the car. I'm going to get some documents." Father Shu reminded her.
"I'm full." Shu Minghuai picked up a tissue and wiped his mouth. "Brother, why do you eat so fast?" She always ate slowly, her small mouth not allowing her to fit too much food in.
"Eat quickly, I'll wait for you."
Shu Yirou didn't want to delay because of her, so she quickly finished the warm porridge in her bowl.
"Mom, I'm so full. Thank you for the meal." "I'm glad you like it." Shu's mother patted her head, full of affection.
"Let's wait for Dad at the door. Goodbye, Mom." Shu Minghuai got up and walked out of the restaurant first.
"Goodbye, Mom." Shu Yirou waved to her.
"Be careful on the road. Minghuai, you must take good care of Yirou." "I will."
Shu's father hurried downstairs. "Wife, I'm leaving now. See you tonight." He hugged his wife affectionately.
"Drive carefully." Shu's mother gave him a concerned reminder.
"Okay."
A champagne-colored sedan stopped at the high school gate. After the door opened, a handsome and extraordinary man stepped out first. He exuded an imposing and natural aura, with a deep, well-defined face... He was a prominent figure at the school, a truly outstanding man.
The female students passing by blushed, sending him their affections, but he seemed to be immune to their attention, neither paying attention nor responding.
"Good morning, Senior Shu." "
Good morning, Senior Shu..."
His attention was entirely on his younger sister, "You're out, Yirou." "
Brother, I forgot to bring tissues..." she stammered.
Shu Minghuai was already used to this, "I brought extra, here you go."
Taking the tissues, she smiled happily, "Brother, thank you." "Your brother is like your nanny." Shu's father shook his head helplessly. "
Dad, I know you and my brother are the best to me, goodbye." She wrapped her arms around her father's neck from the back seat, pretending to be coquettish.
"Alright, alright, hurry up and go to school." Mr. Shu felt a sweet warmth in his heart. Shu Yirou slowly stepped out of the car, the bright sunlight shining on her delicate, flawless face, making her appear even more radiant and fair.
Shu Minghuai closed the car door and watched the car drive away.
"Yirou!"
A graceful and elegant woman jogged towards them, a bright smile on her face.
"Ruying." Shu Yirou greeted her best friend Ji Ruying with a radiant smile.
Ji Ruying saw Shu Minghuai beside her and nodded, saying, "Good morning, Senior Shu."
"Good morning," he replied simply.
"It's getting late. With you by my side, Yirou, I'll head back to the classroom." "Goodbye, brother."
"Wait for me in the classroom after school."
"I know."
"Yirou, your brother's care for you is truly enviable." "Sometimes he's very kind to me, but sometimes he's so meddlesome it's unbearable!" she said, wrinkling her nose.
"I'm an only child. Seeing how much your brother dotes on you, I really want one too."
"Ha, that's easy, Ruying. Just get a boyfriend! You're a beautiful and charming girl in class, with no shortage of suitors."
Ji Ruying's captivating beauty was well-known. Many boys at school pursued her, but her decisive approach often shielded her from unnecessary trouble. She would never give a boy she didn't like a second glance, making him back down. She always believed that only a swift and decisive approach could restore her peaceful and carefree life.
"Yirou, you dare urge me to get a boyfriend? You should be number one! Don't forget, you're the undisputed beauty of our first year!"
"That's a compliment. I'm not that good." She shook her head, admitting she didn't deserve the title.
"Whether it's a compliment or not, you'll find out when you get back to the classroom. Believe me, your drawer is probably stuffed full of love letters again right now!"
Shu Yirou is the kind of girl who becomes the center of attention wherever she goes, and her innate gentle temperament is enough to melt even the toughest man's heart. If it weren't for Shu Minghuai, her protector, accompanying her to and from school and keeping her completely safe, the attention she would attract would be far more than just a desk full of flowers and a drawer full of love letters.
Thinking about this, Shu Yirou felt a headache coming on.
With that pile of flowers and love letters on her desk, she could give the flowers to her classmates, but she couldn't just look at the love letters, nor could she just throw them away. She always had to put them in the recycling bin on her way home, and she had to do it discreetly to avoid hurting the heart of some innocent boy.
And her brother always teased her for being too considerate, saying that she was only causing trouble for herself.
Shu Minghuai also had a number of suitors, but apart from Shu Yirou, he treated all the other female students with a cold expression, ignoring them. He disposed of all the chocolates and love letters he received before class, not even glancing at them, and swept them into the trash can.
This decisive, ruthless attitude didn't deter the female students who admired him; instead, they idolized him and blindly worshipped him, forming a "Shu Minghuai Fan Club."
For him, everything except Shu Yirou was a matter of detachment.
Only Shu Yirou, whom he always worried about, was an inescapable concern…
"Yirou…"
After class, most of the class had left, even Ji Ruying had gone shopping with other classmates.
Shu Yirou was still packing her bag when the call at the door made her look up. "Senior Fang."
Fang Wentao was instantly captivated by Shu Yirou's beauty the moment he saw her at the school gate. He wanted to pursue her openly, but Shu Minghuai, who was always by her side like a bodyguard, kept him away, preventing him from getting close. He had
been writing her love letters every day, and he didn't even know if she had read them. He was almost lovesick for her, which was why he risked being punished by Shu Minghuai to come here and see her.
"Yirou, have you... have you read the love letters I wrote to you?" "Senior Fang... I—" Could she say that she hadn't read them and had thrown them away? She had wanted to read them, but her brother wouldn't allow it, demanding that she focus on her studies and not be distracted. She thought that as a student, academics should be the priority, and nothing else was the most important, so she obeyed her brother's instructions.
"Will you promise what I wrote in the letter?" Fang Wentao's gaze was as intense as a raging fire, making it impossible for anyone to meet his eyes.
“Senior… could you repeat what the letter said? There are so many letters, I… can’t remember them all…”
“I want to date you, are you willing to give me this chance?” He mustered his courage and said, his eyes fixed on her.
Shu Yirou’s pretty face instantly flushed crimson, and she lowered her head. “I…
” She won’t agree!”
Shu Minghuai strode up to Fang Wentao and said, “She’s focused on her studies right now and doesn’t have the energy for romance.”
“Shu Minghuai, you’re messing things up again!” Fang Wentao gritted his teeth. “Is it wrong for me to protect my sister? Yirou, are you ready? We’re leaving.” “
Oh, okay…”
She picked up her bag and tote bag, and was immediately pulled away by Shu Minghuai. “Wait a minute.”
Fang Wentao quickly grabbed her wrist, forgetting to control his strength in his anger. “Don’t go yet.”
“Senior Fang, please let go of me.” "Her hand hurt from being gripped!" Seeing her unusual expression, Shu Minghuai immediately pressed down on Fang Wentao's arm, forcing him to let go.
"Don't be rough with Yirou, if you're still a man." His voice was deep and powerful as he examined the obvious red mark on Shu Yirou's right wrist.
"I couldn't help myself... Yirou, I didn't mean to." He really didn't want to hurt her; seeing her red hand, he felt ashamed. "Senior Fang, I'm alright. I... I'm a student now, and I want to fulfill my duty and don't want a boyfriend. Thank you for your kindness, I'm sorry."
"Yirou." Fang Wentao lowered his eyes, filled with loneliness and melancholy. "Yirou, let's go." Shu Minghuai held her delicate hand and helped her with her bag.
"Okay." She smiled sweetly at Shu Minghuai. With him by her side, she feared nothing.
Shu Minghuai's eyes were filled with affection and tenderness.
Yirou... the joy of the Shu family...
"It hurts... Brother..." Shu Yirou rolled around in pain on the bed, clutching her abdomen, gritting her teeth, and cried out softly.
Tonight, both Mr. and Mrs. Shu had gone to a banquet, leaving the two of them at home to study for the upcoming monthly exams.
Shu Minghuai's room was next to Shu Yirou's, and he rushed over as soon as he heard her cry. "Yirou, you... your period is here... and it hurts again?"
"Mmm..." Every time her period came, she would scream in pain. Shu's mother didn't feel anything, unlike her, who would suffer from cramps and break out in a cold sweat on the first day of each month.
Shu Minghuai quickly grabbed a hot pillow and placed it on her lower abdomen, then used a warm towel to wipe her sweat, and poured her a cup of warm water with two painkillers.
"Are you feeling better?"
"Brother... thank you..."
"We're all family, why are you thanking me?" He gently stroked her fine, shiny hair. "
Rest a bit. I'll stay with you until you fall asleep. Call me if you need anything."
"Okay." She closed her eyes, her brows slightly furrowed.
Shu Minghuai was very attentive; he stayed by her side until she seemed to have truly fallen asleep. Only then did he remove the heated pillow, cover her with a blanket, and return to his room to study.
After the midterm exam results were released, Shu Minghuai always topped the list, his first-place position undisputed.
Shu Yirou felt both proud and envious; she could never match his outstanding achievements!
"Yirou, your brother is really amazing, I like him so much," Shu Yirou's best friend Ji Ruying confided in her. "Yirou, we're good friends, can you help me ask your brother out? I want to become closer friends with him." Ji Ruying said shyly, her girlish charm on
full display. Shu Yirou froze.
She couldn't sort out her thoughts; there was sourness, bitterness, resentment, and anger. She felt so complicated, but she truly didn't want her beloved brother to become a man who loved someone else.
She wanted her brother to cherish only her forever; she didn't want anyone else to share her brother's affection and care. She didn't want it!
She shouldn't have this possessiveness, but she couldn't control herself. "Yi Rou, are you alright? Yi Rou... what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell? Why are you sweating so much?" Ji Ruying asked with concern, unaware of the situation.
"I'm not feeling well... I'm going to the infirmary to rest for a bit. Please ask for leave for this period." Her face was pale.
"Do you want me to go with you?" Ji Ruying looked at her worriedly. "I can manage, I can go by myself." She was trembling all over, as cold as ice.
"Yi Rou..." Ji Ruying watched Shu Yi Rou's departing figure, then turned and ran towards the corridor in another direction. She was going to inform Shu Minghuai, and secretly, she also wanted to create an opportunity for the two of them to be alone, so that he would remember her.
When she reached Shu Minghuai's classroom, she asked the senior student at the door to inform him. "Minghuai, a pretty girl has come to see you. Is she your girlfriend?" Shu
Minghuai looked up from his reference book, his bright black eyes revealing a calm yet intelligent demeanor. Seeing Ji Ruying, he said seriously, "She's my sister's good friend."
He calmly walked towards Ji Ruying, his dark eyes fixed on her. "Is something wrong? Is it about my sister?"
"Yes..." Hearing his magnetic voice, facing his calm demeanor, and smelling the faint musky scent on him, she almost fainted. Her face slowly flushed, her eyes filled with shyness and timidity, and her heart pounded. "You...you know me?"
"My sister mentioned you, and I've seen you a few times. Your name is Ji Ruying."
"Yes!" Her heart blossomed with joy.
"Where's my sister? Didn't she come with you?"
"She...she wasn't feeling well and went to the infirmary."
Shu Minghuai was startled. "My sister's in the infirmary?" He then rushed towards the infirmary like a whirlwind.
Ji Ruying stood there, stunned.
The senior students in the corridor, used to this, said to her, "This kid gets more nervous than anyone else whenever his sister is mentioned. It's probably only his sister's matter that can make the usually unmoved Ji Ruying so anxious." "
Their relationship is so good...very, very good..." Ji Ruying heard herself murmur softly.
Chapter Two.
Lying on the hospital bed in the medical ward, Shu Yirou just wanted to find a quiet place.
"Yirou...where do you feel unwell?" Shu Minghuai rushed over, looking worried.
"Brother..." She was surprised, but then she realized that Ji Ruying had informed him.
Ji Ruying, her best friend had fallen in love with her brother...
She didn't want to call Ji Ruying sister-in-law, no, no!
She stared at Shu Minghuai, her starry eyes veiled with tears, which slowly gathered, and uncontrollable tears slid down her cheeks...
Shu Minghuai panicked, "Yirou, tell me where you feel unwell? I'll take you to ask the school for leave to see a doctor..."
Shu Yirou nestled directly into his arms, not letting Shu Minghuai see her face. She pressed her small face tightly against his chest, feeling his warm breath.
"Brother, don't leave me..." Her thin shoulders trembled, and she felt extremely insecure.
His heart ached, and he held her shoulders tightly. "Brother won't leave you."
"Really? Don't lie to me." She lifted her tear-stained face, a faint sorrow still lingering in her eyes, making her beautiful features even more captivating.
"Brother has never lied to you." His gaze was filled with tenderness and affection. "Brother, I don't want to get married in the future, and you shouldn't either. Let's live together for the rest of our lives, okay?" She lowered her head, twisting her fingers.
"You'll have a boyfriend in the future. You're still young, don't say things like that."
"I don't!" Her eyes lingered with longing. "Brother, I don't want to be separated from you, never."
"Brother won't be separated from you." He held her tightly, as if guarding a precious treasure.
"Brother, Ruying likes you and wants me to help you two get together. Will you agree?"
"You don't want us to get together?" He noticed her gloomy mood. "Brother, will you?" She gazed at him sadly. "I won't!" he said firmly.
"Brother...am I being selfish? Ruying is a good person, but all I need is you. I can do without anyone else."
"Yirou, you're my lifelong concern. I can't bear to leave you. I won't abandon you easily."
"What about Ruying?"
"I'll talk to her myself. Don't worry about it."
"Brother...so many people at school have a crush on you, I'm afraid..." Her eyes were blurry with tears.
"What are you afraid of? I'll always be by your side."
"I'm afraid you'll abandon me, your little sister, after you get a girlfriend." "No." Shu Minghuai's deep black eyes were unfathomable, flashing with conflicting and complex emotions. "I don't want a girlfriend. I'll stay by your side."
"That's wonderful! Brother, I love you the most..."
She pressed her soft, delicate body tightly against his chest, her two warm, tender breasts rubbing against his firm chest muscles through his clothes.
Her actions were innocent and pure, but his heart was churning. He subtly pushed her away, taking a few deep breaths. "Brother has to go back to class."
"Brother, stay with me." She pouted stubbornly.
"No, Yirou. You should go back to class too." He put on a stern face. "Brother's being mean to me, I'm not talking to you anymore." She lay back on the bed, turning her back to him.
"Yirou, what's a student's duty? If you're naughty, I'll tattle on you when I get home."
"No! Brother, I'll go back to class."
"That's a good girl. I'll stay with you, I won't feel at ease until I see you go into the classroom." "Brother, you're like a mother hen." She complained to him, then stuck out her tongue, looking incredibly cute.
He secretly reached out and gently pinched her waist.
"Ouch...ha...I'm so ticklish..." She instantly felt weak all over, leaning against him. "Brother's become bad!"
"It's Yirou who made me bad." He looked down at her gently, a hint of mischief clearly in his voice.
She immediately looked up, and their lips met perfectly.
He was stunned, speechless for a moment, frozen in place.
She froze, all the blood rushing to her head, her face flushed crimson, unable to move.
After a long while, Shu Minghuai turned his face away, cleared his throat, and said, "Brother is going back to the classroom first."
Shu Yirou's heart pounded, her whole body burning. She sat on the edge of the bed, covering her lips.
Although their lips only lightly touched, she felt no resistance whatsoever.
She even felt anticipation, a longing to continue…
No, no, no—
she was horrified by her own thoughts!
They were siblings, born of the same parents! This was incest… It couldn't be!
The unbearable truth resurfaced in her mind, assaulting her heart, and tears streamed down her face.
She understood!
She objected to Ji Ruying becoming her brother's girlfriend because she didn't want her brother's love for her to be divided, because… she would be jealous! She would be envious!
Jealousy and envy are a woman's possessiveness towards a man, but she had developed abnormal feelings for her brother.
Was she abnormal? Who could tell her?
She wept bitterly, her face contorted with anguish. For the first time, Shu Minghuai left her alone to go home. She could only walk alone, carrying a desolate thought, her heart immersed in bitter sorrow, unable to extricate herself. Her
brother ignored her!
Her brother didn't want her anymore?
From childhood, she and her brother had always loved each other dearly. Everyone knew how much he doted on her; they all said she had the best, most loving brother in the world.
But because of that chance kiss that afternoon…
no! It wasn't even a kiss, just an accidental touch of lips. Because of that, her brother chose to leave her!
She covered her face and wept.
They didn't mean it… she shouldn't hold a grudge… she knew she had a "brotherly affection," but the feeling of their lips touching that afternoon was more than just infatuation; it was like an ordinary man and woman… an ordinary yet real love!
The feeling of their hearts being connected, their souls intertwined, could never be erased.
Her heart was truly led by him… uncontrollable, involuntary!
A deep sense of guilt gripped every nerve, oppressing every cell in her body.
She couldn't fall in love with her brother…
they were siblings!
Shu Yirou's eyes were brimming with tears.
She couldn't let her brother know she loved him! She couldn't bear the contempt and disdain in his eyes…
No matter how painful, no matter how unbearable, she had to hide her true feelings.
Her face was deathly pale, her frail body swaying precariously. She steadied herself by leaning against a nearby tree trunk.
She needed to rest! She needed to process her complex and agitated emotions. She only now realized it was her true love, and she had to cherish it, bury it secretly.
Shu Minghuai lay on the bed in his room, his hands behind his head, his eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling.
That feather-light kiss had dropped a bombshell in his heart!
His heart churned wildly, his heart pounding.
He had developed inappropriate fantasies about her; he felt his thoughts were filthy, so depraved!
She was his own sister!
But… that light touch, which wasn't quite a kiss, was like the key to unlocking his passionate, obsessive love, making him unable to suppress his desire and possessiveness towards her.
He felt like a beast in human clothing—no! Even worse than a beast!
He actually wanted to lay a hand on his own sister. Yi Rou was a sweet, lovely, and innocent girl, yet his heart had become so shameless. Morality and ethics vanished from his mind in an instant. He was horrified!
He had to stay away from her to avoid losing control and doing anything inappropriate to her.
He had developed feelings for his sister that shouldn't exist... Like a blow to the head, he was stunned, his vision blurred, and his heart sank.
He tried to calm his churning thoughts, but the surging emotions made him subconsciously feel guilty.
His mouth was so thirsty! He pursed his dry lips, and inadvertently thought of her lips again...
so soft, so sweet!
Stop—
Shu Minghuai's eyes were wild, and he kept shaking his head.
He couldn't think about it anymore!
He took several deep breaths, got out of bed, did a hundred push-ups, and went to the kitchen to get some water.
Shu's mother was cooking in the kitchen and asked in a puzzled tone, "Has Yi Rou come back? I haven't heard her chattering today."
"Yi Rou hasn't come back yet?" Shu Minghuai was extremely anxious. "Didn't Yirou come back with you?" "
I rushed back today to give a report, so I didn't come back with her. I'll go check her room; maybe she's doing her homework."
"Dinner will be ready in half an hour. Tell her to finish her homework and then come wash her hands."
"I know."
Shu Minghuai walked to Shu Yirou's door. "Yirou... Yirou..."
He called out a few times and knocked on the door twice. "Open the door, it's your brother." There was no response from inside.
"Yirou, don't be angry with your brother. I can explain." Silence.
"Yirou, I'm coming in." Shu Minghuai turned the doorknob and found the room empty. The furnishings were the same as when he left in the morning.
Yirou hadn't come home yet!
Shu Minghuai rushed to the kitchen. "Mom, Yirou hasn't come back yet. I'll go bring her back."
"How could this happen? Minghuai..."
Shu Minghuai finished speaking and ran out of the house like a bullet, not even hearing his mother's voice.
"What's wrong with these two kids today?" Shu's mother was bewildered and worried.
It was getting dark, and she, a beautiful girl, couldn't afford any mishaps! Shu Minghuai was terrified, fearing something might happen to her. He looked around anxiously on the road.
Yi Rou was most afraid of the dark; the darkness made her feel extremely insecure. He had to find her as soon as possible.
His conscience tormented him.
She, a girl, had never walked home alone before; he had always protected her. Today, he really shouldn't have left her alone at school without checking on her.
Suddenly, he felt raindrops on his face.
"Is it raining?" He reached out and looked at the dark sky. Sure enough! The raindrops went from intermittent to a steady drizzle. Although it wasn't a downpour, getting too wet in this light rain could still cause a cold.
"Yi Rou..."
He hadn't brought an umbrella, and Yi Rou certainly didn't either. He had to find her quickly and take her home.
"Brother..." A soft, almost inaudible voice came from behind him.
He turned around and saw Shu Yi Rou, soaking wet, slowly walking towards him.
He ran over, and without a word, took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders.
"Where have you been? You made me so worried."
"Brother, I'm sorry..."
She shouldn't have been so willful! Lingering on the road had caused her family so much worry.
"Let's hurry home." She was soaking wet, and his heart ached. "Okay." She nodded gently, but her steps slowed, and an unusual flush rose to her cheeks.
"Are you feeling unwell?" He frowned.
She wanted to give him a sweet smile to reassure him, but she couldn't.
"I..."
Her steps faltered, and if he hadn't caught her quickly, she might have fallen flat on her face.
"You have a fever!" He scooped her up in his arms. "You're so light, it's my fault for leaving you home alone."
"Brother..."
"Don't say anything. It's my fault. I'll take you home right away. You need to change into clean clothes first, then Dad will take you to the doctor, and Mom will make you ginger soup."
"And what about me?"
"I'll stay with you, I'll stay with you the whole time."
He held her tighter, his steps quick, but his steady grip on her reassuring her.
"Mmm."
Shu Yirou had a high fever, and she was in a daze, sleeping and waking repeatedly, extremely uneasy.
"I'm here with you... Yes, don't be afraid, I'll stay with you..." She held his hand tightly; the familiar feeling, the warm body temperature, gave her a sense of security, and she finally fell into a deep sleep.
Shu Minghuai stayed by her bedside all night. Feeling guilty for causing her persistent high fever, he took leave to care for her as well.
Of course, another crucial reason was that even the slightest separation between their hands would disrupt her sleep, causing her fever to return.
Shu Minghuai understood her extreme anxiety, and he held her burning hand in his own.
Half-asleep, Shu Yirou could feel his tender gaze and sense his deep affection. She felt so content and happy, and drifted off to sleep with a sweet smile.
He gazed quietly at her lovely, sweet face as she slept. Her life couldn't be without him, and he couldn't be without her. They had been inseparable since childhood, like the poles of a magnet drawn together. Even if they were siblings, so what?
She could remain unmarried for life, and so could he! As long as they could spend their lives together, caring for each other, that was enough.
"Brother..." she murmured hesitantly.
"I'm here!" His voice gave her a stabilizing strength, and she fell asleep again.
Staring at her rosy lips, he couldn't help but recall the shock her lips had given him.
"Yirou..." He was mesmerized, his gaze fixed on her slightly parted cherry lips, slowly moving closer until their lips met...
She let out a soft moan.
He quickly pulled back, his whole body turning deathly pale as if electrocuted. His hand, which had given her that stabilizing strength, left hers, letting her open her sleepy eyes. "Brother..."
He glanced at her with a flustered and strange look, then hurried away.
Shu Yirou, confused, thought that Shu Minghuai's kindness to her was all just a dream.
After waking from the dream, only heartbreak remained...
Tears welled in her eyes, trembling precariously.
"Brother, whether you can accept me or not, I will follow my heart. My heart keeps saying... I love you..."
He was a beast!
He was unforgivable!
He actually wanted to kiss Yi Rou…
Shu Minghuai hid in his room, locked the door, and pressed his back against it, breathing heavily.
He wanted to violate her…
How could he?!
He slumped helplessly onto the cold floor.
He loved her, deeply and truly!
He held his head, filled with shame and remorse.
She was so pure; he couldn't do anything improper to her! She was his own sister; he should protect her, safeguard her, not constantly harbor thoughts of harming her.
Yet, a hysterical roar roared in his heart: He wanted her! He wanted Yi Rou…
No other woman had ever made him care, only Yi Rou. And his feelings for her were so intense they startled him; if their lips hadn't just touched, he might not have lost control.
The moment he tasted the sweetness of her lips, he was hopelessly captivated… He wanted to hold her tightly, to kiss her fiercely…
He wanted it so badly!
“No—”
He shook his head violently, clutching his head.
His mind was in turmoil, a jumble of chaotic thoughts that made it impossible for him to remain calm and composed. He feared he would eventually lose control and accidentally hurt her! "Why? Why is she my own sister?" he murmured hoarsely and painfully.
He was going crazy; he needed to vent.
He vented with manic laughter!
Tears, however, slid down his cheeks... silently... without a sound...
Chapter Three:
After the high fever, he thought their relationship could return to what it was before, but it didn't. Shu Minghuai seemed to be wearing an invisible and distant mask.
Although he still went to and from school with her, and still cared for her deeply, she knew he had changed.
There seemed to be an invisible barrier between them. His devotion to her remained the same, yet he tried to keep his distance.
She wanted to be with him all the time, wanted to sneak into his room, but all of this had become impossible.
He used his studies as an excuse, and after fulfilling his role as her protector, he would lock himself in his room, saying he needed to study and prepare for the university entrance exams in six months.
His room, which he never used to lock, was now always locked.
And she became the family member who entered his room the least. Before, she would enter his room countless times a day; now, even a glimpse was difficult.
Her parents also asked her not to disturb him, to let him focus on his studies. She knew very well that
her brother was avoiding her! Academic performance was effortless for him.
Gifted as he was, he didn't need to put in much effort; he simply didn't want to see her.
Was she… really that annoying?
Did he feel she had become a burden?
A heavy burden, one he was carrying, and he wanted to let go? Tears quickly filled her eyes, and she began to sob softly, her heart breaking.
“Brother…”
Shu Yirou softly called from outside Shu Minghuai's door, her voice gentle yet tinged with bitterness, charming yet tinged with sadness.
Shu Minghuai wanted to ignore her, but he could never be cruel to his only sister; she was his Achilles' heel, capable of softening even the toughest man.
He let out a long, almost imperceptible sigh.
"Is something wrong, Yirou?"
"Brother, I want to talk to you. I won't take up too much of your time, okay?"
Her sincere and helpless tone was heartbreaking; he simply couldn't ignore it, couldn't refuse her.
Shu Minghuai opened the door. She wanted to go in, but he blocked her way. "You can talk here. What do you want to say?"
There was obvious hurt in her eyes; her fragile heart felt like it had been stabbed by his obstruction. She would feel pain.
He looked away, ignoring the sorrow in her eyes.
"Brother… I'm sorry…"
"Why are you apologizing to me all of a sudden?" He frowned.
“I know I often burden you, brother. It’s all my fault that you’re so distant and cold towards me now. I’ve become a burden to you. You’re tired, you don’t want me anymore, right?”
He frowned, speaking with displeasure, “Who said that? Don’t overthink it. I’m just busy with my studies lately.”
“Really? Haven’t I never had to worry about your studies? Isn’t it just that you’re using your studies as an excuse to neglect me?” She blinked her bright eyes, asking pitifully.
He patted her hair, “Don’t think of your brother as some kind of god! Even if I’m smart, I still need to work hard.”
A slight smile appeared on Shu Yirou’s face, her cheeks flushed slightly. “Brother, am I still your most beloved sister?”
“Of course! You always will be.” He gazed at the rosy-cheeked, beautiful Shu Yirou, feeling a slight intoxication. A
bitter, sorrowful smile appeared on his face.
But… sister…
“Brother, you study hard, I won’t bother you.” She smiled. "Go to sleep early."
He returned to his room, his face buried in his hands, filled with heartache and helplessness, a torrent of pain.
He had developed strange feelings for his own sister, feelings that had come suddenly and violently, irresistible. He
was truly in unbearable pain!
Yi Rou's innocence and sweetness were not something he could taint; a feeling of heartbreak flashed through his mind.
Why was such a wonderful woman his sister? The struggle between family and love over the past few days hadn't brought him to his senses; he was filled with sorrow and despair.
Using the excuse of "preparing for the joint entrance exam," Shu Minghuai did everything he could to minimize his meetings with Shu Yi Rou. Except for unavoidable trips to and from school, he was practically nowhere to be seen where she was.
Shu Yi Rou understood him; though he didn't say it, he was truly avoiding her.
Painful, helpless tears slowly and silently streamed down her smooth, delicate face…
She had developed feelings for him that she shouldn't have, and he must have felt the same way, so he chose to avoid her.
Her feelings were like a brand, bearing only three words—Shu Minghuai! No matter how hard she tried, how much she deceived herself, she couldn't change the fact that her heart fluttered only for him.
Her eyes only shone brightly when she saw him! Her heart only opened automatically when she met him.
He occupied the largest place in her heart, the deepest corner; he was the person she cared about most.
Fate truly played tricks on her, she couldn't help but let out a mocking laugh. Why did they have to be siblings?
Her heart ached because they couldn't be together openly.
Cold sweat streamed down her forehead…
siblings… incest…
these words exploded in her mind like the biggest bomb in history…
If she couldn't be with her brother, she would never love another man in her life. Having tasted love, she had received the bitterest, most bitter first love; even the bitterness of bitter melon and coptis could not compare to one ten-thousandth of this.
She heard the sound of her own heart breaking.
Shu Minghuai was admitted to his first-choice university in the north and needed to live in the northern dormitory. She always knew her brother was incredibly talented; getting into any good school wouldn't be a problem for him. He got into the best university, becoming the most famous and respected figure in their town, the talk of the town, making their parents incredibly proud.
She was also deeply proud of her brother…
Although it only took two hours by train from central Taiwan to the north, she had no sense of direction and was extremely dependent on her brother. She truly didn't know how she would get through life without him.
Her parents took her and her brother to a fancy restaurant for a lavish meal to celebrate.
Her mood remained low and uneasy. She ate silently, her eyes meeting Shu Minghuai's several times. Her eyes were filled with sorrow and unease, unspoken emotions.
Back home, she locked the door after entering her room, tears streaming down her face, collapsing onto the bed in a state of utter despair.
She didn't want her brother to leave…
“Waaah…” She covered her sobbing lips, afraid to let out a sound.
Her brother was gone, and she wouldn't be used to it…
Her brother was the great tree in her heart; her love for him had grown from a sapling to a towering tree, strong and sturdy. She wouldn't be used to life without him; she would be afraid.
Tears streamed down her face.
“Yi Rou…”
It was her brother's voice!
She hurriedly wiped away her tears and ran to open the door. “Brother.”
Her reddened eyes pained him. “Are you crying?”
“No… I accidentally got my eye wet. I'm so careless and clumsy; I can't even take care of myself. Brother, come in and sit down.” He didn't seem inclined to come in, so she reached out and grabbed his strong arm, pulling him into her room.
Closing the door, she rushed into his arms; he froze, embarrassed, stiff.
“Yi Rou,” he called softly.
“Brother, stay, don't go. I can't bear to part with you.” She looked up, tears swirling in her bright eyes, turning into streams that flowed endlessly.
Her tears made him lose control and hug her tightly. "Yirou..." "Don't go, I don't want you to go..." she cried out her innermost thoughts. He didn't want to leave either, his arms around her wanting to hold her forever, never letting go.
She held him so tightly, so tightly, afraid he would leave, only through the almost suffocating embrace could she feel that he was right beside her.
There would never be another chance to be so close to him...
He was going north, and she heard that girls in Taipei weren't as conservative as those in the countryside, they were very proactive, and they liked the "steps" of pursuing someone. Her brother would definitely be pursued by many people, and he would eventually have a girlfriend too.
Her heart ached, and her tears flowed even more fiercely.
"Don't cry, Yirou, don't cry..." He clumsily and tenderly wiped away her tears, but wiped away even more tears.
"Brother, do you really have to go to Taipei to study?"
"Do you want me to ruin my studies?" he countered.
She shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “I can’t bear to leave you, brother…” She looked at him with tearful eyes. “I can’t hold you back either… You’re Mom and Dad’s hope. I just don’t want to leave you. Brother, let’s talk to Mom and Dad, and I can transfer to a high school near Taipei, okay?”
He shook his head, his tone serious. “No, Taipei isn’t suitable for a naive girl like you. If I go there alone, I’ll have to study and work. I won’t be able to take care of you. Your stubbornness will put pressure on me.”
“Brother, I’m sorry…” Tears streamed down her face as she looked down at the floor, her pitiful tone heartbreaking.
Shu Minghuai looked away, his eyes glistening with tears.
Yi Rou, I’m sorry, I’m doing this for your own good…
“Yi Rou, while I’m away, you must take good care of Mom and Dad, okay?”
“I will be doubly filial to Mom and Dad, even if it’s just as much as you do, and I will listen to them.”
“While I’m not by your side, you must learn to be independent.” “Brother, if I’m not independent, will you worry and not leave?”
she asked a silly question.
“I still have to go. I hope you become independent.” He forced a bitter smile.
"Brother, you must come back to see me often and write to me often. I will miss you so much when you are not at home."
Her clear, bright eyes held an unconcealable depth of emotion, a tender, dense web that enveloped his heart like soft silk.
A fleeting, piercing pain flashed across his eyes, but he rallied himself. "Sometimes I'm very busy, very busy, and I might forget to write."
"I'm not busy, brother. How about I write to you? I'll send you a letter every month, okay?"
"I might be too busy to read them..." His face remained expressionless, his masculine features deep and unfathomable.
"It's alright. It's okay if you don't reply. I'll still send you letters. You can collect them and read them together when you have time."
"I don't want you to do that." He shook his head, his voice hoarse. "You should focus on your studies. You're academically gifted, but you're easily distracted. I've always protected you, which has made you lazy. When I'm not home, you need to concentrate on your studies. You can get good grades too."
"Brother... will you come back during winter and summer vacations?" A wave of sorrow washed over her, and tears welled up in her eyes again.
“I have to work.”
“How about I come see you during the summer and winter vacations with Mom and Dad?”
“We’ll talk about it then, okay?”
Large tears welled up in her fragile eyes; she couldn’t stop them, the tears streaming down her face.
“Don’t cry, Yirou…” His heart ached terribly.
She collapsed into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably, “You’re so cruel, brother… I’ll go crazy thinking about you…” His
heart ached so much, so bitter!
His defenses crumbled; facing the person he loved most, the person he least wanted to hurt, he had inflicted the greatest pain on her!
He was in unbearable agony.
He could never love her; it was an injustice. How much torment, how deep the heartache, must he endure?
Shu Minghuai’s brows furrowed deeply as he gently pushed her away.
“Brother needs to go back to his room to rest.”
Her heart sank to the bottom the moment he pushed her away. Shu Yirou’s brows were filled with sorrow; her delicate eyebrows were furrowed, her small face was deathly pale.
"Brother, don't go, I need you." In her desperation, she tightly grasped his hands, her cheeks flushed. "I...I've fallen in love with you..."
His expression was unusually complex and dark. "You don't understand love, don't talk nonsense."
"I understand..." Her beautiful face was filled with sorrow, her eyes, brimming with grief, stared intently at him. "You taught me..."
His heart clenched, panicked and uneasy, his face heavy and somber. "I only ever saw you as a sister."
"No—" Her heart was like a turbulent lake, waves of pain washing over her
. "I realized your feelings for me had become distorted, so I decided to go north to stay, to leave early. I hope that when I return in four years, you will no longer have these brotherly feelings." He spoke in a tense, somber voice.
Time would be the best healer; his words were venomous, a swift and decisive move.
He didn't intend to waste Shu Yirou's youth, to make her wait for a brother who would never have a good ending.
Shu Yirou's heart was shattered; every word he spoke felt like a sharp needle piercing her heart.
Tears streamed down her face as she stammered, "It's not like that...you're lying..."
"You've misunderstood. I only see you as a sister." She stiffened, her blood seemingly rushing to her head.
Her fragile, helpless, and lost appearance made him want to impulsively embrace her.
But he didn't. He clenched his fists, desperately suppressing his emotions. "I've said what I needed to say, goodnight,"
he whispered, slowly walking away, a fleeting look of melancholy in his eyes.
Shu Yirou was heartbroken.
It was all just her wishful thinking.
It was all one-sided.
A melancholy gaze, a sorrowful heart...
Tears of anguish surged forth.
She collapsed, like a helpless, fragile child, sobbing uncontrollably. "Endless sorrow, when will it cease? Even if
the spring river were all tears, it could not wash away all my sorrow!
New tear stains amidst old tear stains.
Seeking a good dream, but the dream is hard to achieve. Who knows my feelings at this moment?"
Tears mingled with raindrops on the steps, dripping through the window until dawn!
Chapter Four:
Two years later.
Shu Yirou was admitted to a day school near her home, commuting daily. She still couldn't help but write down all her innermost thoughts, but she kept them in her diary, not sending them to Shu Minghuai.
She didn't want to give him only pressure, not sweetness. Fang Wentao was overjoyed that Shu Yirou was his junior again. His passion for her hadn't faded. This time, without Shu Minghuai as an obstacle, he pursued her with even greater fervor. He was often seen in the corridor of Shu Yirou's classroom, gazing intently at her as she sat quietly lost in thought.
Shu Yirou's heart was completely filled with Shu Minghuai; she couldn't spare any space for Fang Wentao.
Whenever she faced Fang Wentao's ardent gaze, she envied his courage—she lacked it, and she dared not have it.
She loved Shu Minghuai, but she couldn't pursue him, and he couldn't love her in return.
Cupid truly loves to play tricks. If only the person she fell in love with were Fang Wentao, then all her troubles wouldn't be troubles.
She wouldn't have to be frowning, she wouldn't have to be sentimental, she could live every day with a smile, sweet and content.
Love is something that can never be controlled by reason, is it?
I wonder how my brother is doing?
He must have many suitors, has he gotten a girlfriend? Has he forgotten her?
Brother... Brother... I can't forget you...
Only then does longing arise, and only then does longing cause me suffering.
A single inch of longing brings a thousand threads of emotion, there is no place in this world to arrange them.
"Yirou, your infatuation is at it again." A female classmate nudged her shoulder with her elbow, bringing her back to her senses.
She met Fang Wentao's bright, loving eyes through the window, smiled sweetly, and went outside. "Senior Fang."
"Yirou, a new teahouse opened near the university. Shall I take you there after school?"
She looked at him apologetically. "Senior Fang, you...you shouldn't focus all your attention on me. We can't be together." "
You already have someone in your heart?"
"Yes."
"You're lying to me. I've never seen your boyfriend." She sighed softly.
The chances of him appearing were slim, weren't they?
But love never needs to lie; it relies on feeling. This overflowing feeling filled her heart. Just thinking of him gave her this feeling, and the feeling accumulated day by day, making her miss him to the point of heartache.
"I see you're lonely. If you have something on your mind, you can tell me. I'll keep it a secret. I'm your friend. We don't necessarily have to be lovers, but let me be your friend, okay?"
"Senior Fang, thank you." She was deeply grateful for his kindness. "Wait for me after school, I'll keep you company."
"Okay."
Back home, facing the house she'd lived in for over ten years, she couldn't help but think of him. She trapped herself in a prison of unrequited love, so tightly bound that she could hardly breathe.
She tried coming home later, to reduce the amount of memories of him swirling in her mind.
Would that ease her heartache?
During winter break, the Shu family drove north to find Shu Minghuai. Shu Minghuai hadn't been home for over two years, and his phone calls were few and far between, causing his parents great concern.
Upon arriving at his accommodation, his roommate said he hadn't returned from work yet. The three of them—Shu's father, mother, and Shu Yirou—sat in the dormitory waiting, listening to their roommate recount his life. Shu
Minghuai was always first in his class…he was truly remarkable.
Although his parents regularly transferred money to him, he was frugal, often working part-time to keep himself so busy that he would shower and fall asleep as soon as he got home, seemingly without even a chance to miss them.
The roommate mysteriously remarked: Shu Minghuai had someone on his mind, and that person seemed to be causing him a lot of trouble. He believed Shu Minghuai loved that person deeply, and that person was definitely a girlfriend he couldn't have, which was why he used work and studies to distract himself.
Shu Yirou's heart pounded, her beautiful eyes brimming with tears. She understood! She understood everything…
Her brother loved her, deeply loved her…
She suffered the pain of unrequited love, and he suffered the same pain.
It was very late when Shu Minghuai finally dragged his weary body in.
“Dad? Mom? Yi…rou? When did you arrive? Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
His roommate yawned. “I wanted to tell you, but your phone was always off. How could I notify you?”
“You could call my workplace.”
“You often change jobs; I didn’t know where you went to work.”
“I…”
“I know. The reason you don’t stay at any job for long is because you’re so popular. Every time you work a certain place, you have enviable romantic encounters, and many girls are jealous of you.”
Shu Minghuai gave his roommate a wink, signaling him not to say anything more.
“I’m going to sleep. You two chat.” His roommate slipped away first. “Dad, Mom,” Shu Minghuai greeted respectfully.
“We’ve come to see how you’re doing, Minghuai. Will you come home for Chinese New Year this year? We’ve been missing you for the past two years, and starting next year, there might be one less person in the family,” said Mr. Shu.
“Dad, what’s wrong?”
“Your dad was transferred to work in the east. I originally wanted to go with him, but it’s not safe for Yirou to live alone at home, so I chose to stay home with her after school.”
“I’ll try to find time to go back before Chinese New Year.”
His little girl had grown up, and he was overwhelmed with emotion.
“Brother, do you think it’s good? I cooked your favorite food!”
He softened his gaze and his voice, “It’s delicious.”
“I knew it.” Her heart soared high and far, as if floating on clouds, light and carefree.
"To welcome you home, Yirou worked very hard learning to cook. At first, she kept cutting her fingers while chopping vegetables, leaving them covered in cuts and bandages, looking quite unsightly."
Shu's mother took a chilled fruit platter from the refrigerator, tearing off the plastic wrap. "Eat some fruit to aid digestion."
A complex mix of heartache, fear, and gratitude flashed in Shu Minghuai's eyes. "Oh, Mom, you said you'd keep it a secret," she murmured softly, a blush spreading across her beautiful face.
"We're family, it's alright," Shu's mother said with a smile.
"I'll be transferred to Taitung at the beginning of next month. Minghuai, come back to see your mother and sister whenever you have time. It's inconvenient without a man at home, and you need to be extra careful," Shu's father said seriously.
Shu Minghuai nodded. "I'll come back on weekends." "Yirou, your studies are good. Don't just go on dates with your boyfriend when I'm not home."
"Dad, I don't have a boyfriend," she clarified.
"Still denying it? Doesn't that guy surnamed Fang often come to your house? He calls to ask you to go out for a walk?"
"He's an upperclassman at my school. Senior Fang is just a friend." Noticing Shu Minghuai's gaze, she tried to explain, but her flushed face made it seem like she was only trying to cover something up.
"Is it Fang Wentao?" Shu Minghuai asked.
"Brother, I really only see him as a friend." She hurriedly retorted.
Shu Minghuai's face remained expressionless. He gave a soft reply and said nothing more.
Brother misunderstood!
Although he didn't say a word or express any opinion, she understood him based on their unspoken understanding.
She didn't fall in love with Senior Fang; the person she loved had always been him, him!
Her gaze was fixed on him, but he avoided her eyes, preferring to chat with Shu's parents rather than make eye contact with her.
Once they started talking, the three of them—Shu's parents and Shu Minghuai—talked so much that they lost track of time. Shu Yirou had a fixed biological clock and had intended to explain things to Shu Minghuai privately after their conversation ended. However, as it approached one o'clock, her eyelids were already drooping, and she looked exhausted.
"Yirou, go to sleep!" Shu's mother urged her.
"I want to listen to you talk," she murmured softly, half-asleep. "There will be other opportunities to talk. Go to sleep first, or you'll have panda eyes tomorrow."
"Really? Brother?" She perked up and asked loudly. "Really." He smiled slightly, gazing at her with loving attention. "Dad, Mom, goodnight. Brother, goodnight." She dragged her sleepy body to her room.
"Goodnight." His voice was full of tenderness.
The next morning, she went straight to Shu Minghuai's room, but no one was there!
Because Shu Minghuai still had to work, he had already taken the early train north. She felt disappointed and melancholy, constantly blaming herself for being so lazy. "Your brother left you a letter," Shu's mother said softly. "I put it on your desk."
She went back to her room and opened the letter.
Yi Rou:
Thank you for cooking my favorite dishes. Your cooking is excellent; I'm so proud of you.
I didn't realize you were already at the age to have a boyfriend. Fang Wentao has liked you since high school. If you two could be together, I'd be happy for you. However, as a daughter of the Shu family, your studies shouldn't suffer because of romance, understand? (
Brother's handwritten note)
Shu Yi Rou shook her head violently, tears streaming down her face, staining the paper.
I only love you.
Brother, the only person I've ever loved is you!
Waiting for someone you can never openly love is painful; loving someone you shouldn't love is painful; yet, she had already fallen in love, and it was too late to extricate herself, nor did she want to.
Her eyes involuntarily filled with tears.
Since Shu's father left home, only Shu's mother and Shu Yirou remained, relying on each other for survival. Sometimes, Fang Wentao would come over to join in the fun; Shu's mother said this was better to keep out petty people and thieves.
Shu Yirou couldn't give Fang Wentao love, but she gave him the warmth of friendship and family.
"Senior Fang, thank you for fixing the faucet and changing the light bulb." "It's nothing, you're welcome. If you ever need anything from me, just say the word, no need to be so polite." Fang Wentao gazed at her tenderly, "Your home is like my home; I never consider myself an outsider."
She pretended to be naive, "Yes, you're like another brother to me; my mother is very happy to have another son."
“Yi Rou, that’s not what I meant, I meant…” “It’s late, Senior Fang, please take your time, I’m closing the door.” Shu Yi Rou said.
“I’ll wait for you to close it before I leave.” Fang Wen Tao was worried.
She nodded, moved, and slowly lowered the electric roller shutter, remaining motionless.
He stared at her face, her delicate body, her beautiful legs, her feet… until she was out of sight.
Love is always so complicated, always so fond of playing hide-and-seek. Shu Yi Rou sighed softly. If Fang Wen Tao’s identity were reversed with Shu Ming Huai’s, then her troubles would no longer be troubles, and she wouldn’t have to be so melancholy.
Two years later, after graduating from university, Shu Ming Huai moved back home, partly to stay away from the women pursuing him in Taipei. Their overt enthusiasm often annoyed him, and he never fell in love.
At most, he would glance at women whose expressions or temperament resembled Shu Yi Rou, but that was all.
He believed he wouldn't be these women's future husbands, so he wouldn't take liberties with them, nor would he engage in any casual one-night stands. He even refused a mere kiss.
He was so self-disciplined that his roommates and classmates considered him a modern-day monk, and he accepted it.
Unable to be with the one he loved most, he'd rather do everything himself than be a womanizer.
On the other hand, his mother needed him, and Shu Yirou needed him too. The happiest person when he returned home was Shu Yirou.
She hugged him as soon as he arrived, "Brother, welcome home." Her smile was so beautiful, he was mesmerized. "Brother, are you really not leaving this time? You can't back out, you can't lie, you can't leave without a word again, okay?"
"I've brought all my luggage back." He pointed to the two heavy bags of luggage on the ground.
She jumped for joy, cheering endlessly. "That's wonderful! Brother, ever since you left home, I've longed for you to come home. I thought about it morning and night, waking up and dreaming. I've finally waited for you to come back."
His eyes welled up with tears at her words, his heart burned with warmth, and a deep love boiled within him. His voice was as gentle as could be. "Yirou, you don't need to wait anymore. I'll stay here once I'm home."
Shu Yirou threw herself into his chest, feeling his heartbeat and his warmth, tears of emotion streaming down her face.
"Brother, I love you, I really love you so much..." she said tenderly. He was in turmoil, his heart pounding. He wanted to push her away but couldn't bear to, yet he couldn't stay still. He was caught in a dilemma .
He closed his eyes in anguish and sighed softly, "I don't know what to do with you."
Shu Yirou tiptoed and stole a kiss on his lips when he wasn't looking.
He was paralyzed, his mind in turmoil.
She blushed deeply. "I don't regret doing this."
Their gazes locked, neither willing to look away. Unbeknownst to them, a pair of eyes, wide with astonishment and shock at the scene, were fixed on Shu's mother not far away.
Her two children were in love?!
Shu's mother sat in her room, her face contorted in disbelief. "They've always been very close, but even the closest relationships shouldn't involve kissing; that's something lovers do..."
"I'm such a negligent mother, I didn't even notice their unusual feelings," she murmured to herself. "Should I stop them? Or should I allow it? They're not blood-related siblings, Yirou is an adopted girl..." Shu's mother took a yellowed piece of paper from the bottom of a wardrobe drawer, unfolded it, and clearly wrote the adoption agreement on it.
"Mom, dinner's ready." Shu Yirou had cooked a simple three-dish meal herself and knocked on her mother's door.
"Yirou, go call your brother. Come in, I have something to say." "Okay, I'll go call my brother."
A moment later, Shu Minghuai and Shu Yirou slowly entered Shu's mother's room. "Mom!" they called out in unison.
"Sit down, Mom wants to talk to you."
The two sat down on chairs in the room, looking at Shu's mother, whose expression was serious. "Were you kissing this afternoon?"
Shu Yirou's face flushed with shame and guilt, and she lowered her head; Shu Minghuai faced his mother and said with a reckless spirit, "Mom, we love each other, please don't blame Yirou. I understand that our love is a sin, and I am willing to bear the guilt and suffer eternal damnation."
She raised her eyes, moved and touched, her eyes brimming with tears.
"Brother... it's not your fault, you did nothing wrong, it was all my fault, Mom, I'm sorry, I know I'm shameless, but I really love you so much." Her tearful face was pitiful, making it impossible to criticize her.
Shu Minghuai's heart ached terribly at her weeping. He held her tightly, "Don't cry, don't blame yourself, don't be sad, Yirou. I'll take all the blame, don't cry."
"No... Brother, I'm wrong too. Let me suffer with you. I don't want you to leave me again. Even if it's hell, I'll go with you." She sobbed softly, holding him tighter.
His voice was hoarse, and he could feel her body trembling with fear at his departure. "Yirou, I won't leave you again."
Shu's mother's eyes were filled with tears, deeply moved.
"I've always thought that when Minghuai gets married, I wonder if he can marry a girl as gentle as Yirou; and when Yirou grows up, she'll also get married someday, I wonder if she can marry a man as considerate as Minghuai. Now I don't have to worry anymore, you've found the best choice."
"Mom, is there something behind your words?" Shu Minghuai sensed something strange and held his breath.
Shu Yirou blinked her tearful eyes, confused.
“This is it, you’ll understand once you see it.” Shu’s mother handed the document she held in her palm to Shu Minghuai.
“Yirou is adopted? We’re not blood siblings?” He jumped for joy, overjoyed; nothing in the world could make him so happy.
“Brother isn’t my biological brother, and I have no blood relation to Mom and Dad…” she murmured, her body going limp.
“We can love each other now.” Shu Minghuai gripped her hand tightly, speaking excitedly.
“Brother…” she said, her voice choked with mixed emotions of joy and sorrow.
“Mom, thank you for telling me all this. Yirou is adopted, but what about her biological parents? Are they still alive? Yirou wants to see her biological parents too.” Shu Minghuai asked the question that had been on her mind.
“Your father found her on the roadside; she was an abandoned baby. He had a letter in his arms with only her birth date written on it. She was only a month old then. We notified the police, but none of her relatives came forward to claim her. I felt a connection with her, so I adopted her.”
Shu Yirou’s face was streaked with tears.
Shu Minghuai cupped her face, seeing through her thoughts. "Don't think about the silly question of whether you're good enough for me. You grew up in my family; my parents are your parents too. See, there won't be any mother-in-law/daughter-in-law conflicts when you marry me, because your parents have always cherished you like a precious jewel. You'll be very happy."
"Brother, you really don't mind my background?" she murmured softly. He gently tapped her forehead with his index finger. "If I were going to mind, I would have when you were a little kid, always walking around the house with a snotty nose. Why would I wait until now? Besides, I love your heart, your inner self, you as a person, and that won't change because of external circumstances, understand?"
She smiled, all her affection unspoken. "Brother..." "Yirou, you two can love each other openly now. Mom is happy to see it happen."
Shu's mother smiled knowingly.
"Mom, thank you for telling me this wonderful news, and thank you for raising me all these years."
"You're so adorable, Mom feels a connection with you! That's why I raised you as a companion."
"Brother also feels a connection with you, that's why I was inexplicably caught in your web of affection, and can't escape anymore." He teased, and she blushed.
"Alright, alright, Yirou's cooking is getting cold, let's go eat." Shu's mother said.
Shu Minghuai took Shu Yirou's hand and gazed at her intently. "Dinner's ready."
"Mmm." Her eyes sparkled with joyful tears.
Chapter Five
The evening breeze carried the fragrance of blooming flowers from the garden, gently drifting towards Shu Minghuai and Shu Yirou on the second-floor balcony.
The moon was hazy, the night was hazy, the wind was gentle, and smiles were gentle.
In this pleasant moonlight, Shu Yirou nestled reluctantly beside him, his hand gently encircling her slender waist, her head resting on his shoulder, a sweet smile on her face.
“Brother, we’re not siblings. We can love each other like normal people. I feel like I’m dreaming. I’m so happy I can’t sleep.” She was beaming with excitement, her whole being exuding a sweet allure.
His eyes, burning with a deep, lingering affection, were fixed on her. “Yi Rou.”
“Hmm?” She looked into his dark eyes, his tender gaze melting her heart and making her cheeks flush with shyness.
He took her hand, opened it, and drew circles in her smooth palm. “Legend has it that if you draw circles in each other’s palms in this life, you’ll be together again in the next.”
“I want to draw too.”
She lifted his hand, but he deliberately gripped it tightly, making it impossible for her to pry it open. Seeing her puffed-up cheeks and her beautifully angry expression, he smiled gently and released her hand. “You can draw.”
“Hmph! I don’t want to draw anymore!” She punched him with her small fist. “My flesh may be firmer and tougher than yours, but I’m still made of flesh, and I feel pain.”
“Really?”
He frowned. “Of course it’s true.
