Misplaced Love - Chapter Three: Different Kinds of Happiness

At first, Yun Yuqing didn't think she was any different from others.
"I have my mom who loves me the most, and my sister Aya who loves me the most. I am happy every morning, happy at noon, happy in the evening, and happy all the time. I am the happiest person in the world."
This is what young Yun Yuqing wrote in her notebook with crooked pencil marks, half Chinese characters and half pinyin. She proudly showed this immature composition to her teacher and received praise and a big red flower. But just as she was about to take the composition home to show her mother and her older sister Aya, a boy in her class took her notebook.
"Give it back to me!"
Yun Yuqing relentlessly chased after the boy, and finally managed to snatch the notebook back. But the boy, who had already seen what was written on it, asked her this question:
"Yun Yuqing, don't you have a father?"
"dad……"
Young Yun Yuqing was stunned by the question.
She remembered her teacher saying in class that a happy family consists of three people: her father, her mother, and "me". If you add her older brother, older sister, younger brother, and younger sister, then there are four people. If you add her grandparents, then there are four more people.
Yun Yuqing has a mother and an older sister, so she doesn't feel that she is any different from other children... Even if there are only three of them, they are still a happy family.
But on that day, she realized something.
Only the older sister who shares the same mother is a true older sister. Sister Aya has her own older sister, a very beautiful older sister. Sister Aya also has her own mother, whom Yun Yuqing remembers to call Auntie. She likes both the older sister and the aunt very much, but another person who also lives in Sister Aya's house is very scary. He is a very tall person with a gruff voice, short hair, and a dark face.
That person is Aya's sister's... father.
Aya's father, Aya's mother, Aya's sister, and Aya's sister. The four of them are a happy family.
Mom, and "me".
There were only two people.
That day, Yun Yuqing remembered two things—
Two people alone are not enough to make a happy family.
There is no father in her home.
————————
"Yuqing, Yuqing?"
As Aya called out, Yun Yuqing's eyes regained their sparkle. She blinked and looked at Aya, who was looking at her with concern.
"Hmm? What's wrong?"
"You suddenly started spacing out just now, are you feeling unwell somewhere?"
"No..." Yun Yuqing began to retort, but Aya had already reached out and touched her forehead without her permission.
"Do you have a fever?" Aya placed her other hand on her forehead for comparison, while Yun Yuqing stopped all her movements and carefully felt the touch of their skin against each other.
"It doesn't burn. Is it because my hands are too hot that I can't feel it?"
"I'm fine..."
"You should have a thermometer at home, right? Remember to take your temperature again when you get back. If you feel unwell, go to the hospital immediately, okay?"
Yun Yuqing nodded gently: "Yes, I've got it."
"Sigh... If you really remember this, then don't make me worry so much anymore." Aya said, her face still showing a worried expression.
“Aya.”
"Hmm, what's wrong?"
"I was just thinking about things from my childhood."
"When we were little..." Aya was also lost in memories. She looked at the tray in front of her and suddenly smiled, "Do you remember when we used to make French fries ourselves when we were little?"
Yun Yuqing looked at the rather exquisitely packaged French fries on the tray and nodded.
"Oh, I remember I brought the potatoes from home, but I was afraid of getting scolded by my mom, so I ran to your house to borrow a pot, and spilled most of the oil in the process."
"We all got scolded that time," Yun Yuqing added softly, detailing the incident.
“Yes, this is the first time I’ve seen Aunt Lin so angry.” Aya said, her smile gradually fading. “But I remember, the reason she was angry wasn’t because I spilled oil, but because we used knives and fire without her permission, and she was afraid we would get hurt.”
Aya's eyes seemed to sparkle, and her voice became hoarse: "Aunt Lin has always been so gentle, treating me like her own daughter..."
Yun Yuqing remained silent, seemingly unwilling to interrupt Aya's recollection.
"Alright, let's not talk about this anymore." Aya sniffed and then subtly wiped her eyes. She pushed the tray in front of her aside and looked at Yun Yuqing, saying, "It's just the two of us tonight, right? Perfect, it's been a long time since we sisters have gotten together."
"Mmm." Yun Yuqing's tone also sounded a bit cheerful.
"Since it's a long-awaited reunion of sisters, we can't just settle for fast food. Come on! Let me treat you to something nice!"
"Mm," Yun Yuqing replied, but then suddenly remembered something and added, "But you can't drink alcohol."
Aya's face fell immediately: "Can't I even drink a little bit...?"
Yun Yuqing shook her head firmly. She knew Aya's alcohol tolerance and was unwilling to make any concessions or compromises.
Aya used to be a non-drinker, but after her divorce and return to her parents' home, she gradually developed a drinking habit. Yun Yuqing had seen Aya drunk many times, and this experience changed her view on alcohol to some extent.
"Just a little bit, just a tiny bit." Aya held Yun Yuqing's hand and shook it back and forth, and for a moment the two of them seemed to have switched ages.
Finally, Aya brought out her ultimate reason: "Yuqing, don't you also like drinking? Anyway, it's just the two of us, what's wrong with having a little drink and having some fun?"
Yun Yuqing's expression was starting to crumble.
Her attitude towards alcohol did change because of Aya. On the one hand, she felt that alcohol was something she would only drink when venting her emotions, but on the other hand, she couldn't deny that the lightheaded feeling after being slightly drunk was indeed irresistible.
"Aya, you never let Brother Guo drink. What will he think if he finds out you're like this now?"
“Him?” Mentioning her husband Guo Yang, Aya’s eyebrows shot up and her voice rose a few decibels: “Old Guo has absolutely no sense of self-control, okay? If I don’t keep an eye on him, he might get into trouble one day from drinking too much.”
"Does he listen to you?"
"He dares not listen to me!"
Aya slammed her hand on the table, making a loud noise that drew the attention of everyone around her. Realizing she had made a fool of herself, Aya quickly lowered her head. Only when the suddenly quiet restaurant became noisy again did she exchange a glance with Yun Yuqing, both of them smiling.
"Oh, oh... How embarrassing! You mustn't tell Lao Guo what happened today! If he finds out, he'll laugh at me for days, no, a whole week!"
Yun Yuqing looked at Aya with a smile in her eyes and asked, "Aya, do you feel happy now?"
Aya blinked and said, "Happiness? Why are you suddenly asking about that?"
"I was just... asking casually."
Aya couldn't read anything from Yun Yuqing's expression. She lowered her head, looked at the wedding ring on her right ring finger, and said softly, "I'm very happy now. This is my second marriage. I used to think I would never find my own happiness in this life, but God blessed me and let me meet Lao Guo, the right person for me."
Then she reached out and took Yun Yuqing's hand, which was resting on the table, and said in an extremely sincere voice, "So my wish now is for you to find your own happiness, Yuqing. Whatever your decision is, I will support you."
"My decision?" Yun Yuqing was a little confused.
"Yeah, didn't you have a fight with Shen Haoyu? Did he bully you? Tell me, I'll definitely make him pay!"
Yun Yuqing was stunned for a moment, then said, "I just said that we didn't quarrel. We... are doing quite well. He has always taken good care of me and rarely makes me angry."
"So what happened to you today..."
As Aya spoke, she gestured with her eyes to Yun Yuqing's thin clothes.
"I just forgot to change my clothes, how could you think that way?" Yun Yuqing said irritably.
"So you really have nothing to hide from me?"
Yun Yuqing didn't speak; she didn't know how to answer.
Seeing this, Aya rested her elbow on the table, cupped one side of her face, and said, "Sigh, fine, if you don't want to talk about it, that's fine too. Everyone has secrets..."
"Do you also have secrets you don't want to tell me, Aya?"
Aya glared at Yun Yuqing, feigning anger, and said, "Little girl, you've grown wings, haven't you? You're using my words against me now!"
After another round of playful banter, the two returned to their previous topic. Aya began to pour out her troubles to Yun Yuqing, but what she said sounded more like a public display of affection than a complaint, making Yun Yuqing roll her eyes and even find her hot drink too cloying to drink. Yun Yuqing returned the favor by talking about some interesting things that had happened in her life recently, and the conversation eventually drifted to the upcoming Spring Festival.
"You're not coming back for Chinese New Year this year, are you?" Aya asked, stirring the last few drops of hot drink in her cup with a straw. "I'm not going back. I'm going to go back to Lao Guo's hometown with him this year. I've never been to his hometown before. I heard it gets as cold as -40 degrees Celsius in winter... Good heavens! People would freeze to death standing outside, wouldn't they?"
Yun Yuqing laughed and teased for a few moments before speaking, "He... Haoyu also mentioned to me that he wanted me to accompany him back to his hometown to meet his parents."
Did you say yes to him?
"Um."
"Going home to meet his parents, does that mean he has 'that' in mind?"
"Yes, he has already told me."
"Huh?" Aya's eyes widened. "Really? How come I didn't know that?"
"Yes, it was the day before your wedding that I said it." Yun Yuqing's face flushed slightly as she recalled that afternoon when she was wearing a white dress that was no different from her wedding gown, and what she and Shen Haoyu did on the hotel bed.
But at this moment, what flowed in her heart was not only sweetness, but also a slight stinging pain that seemed to seep into her body.
"Ah... I remember now." Aya slapped her forehead, and her gaze toward Yun Yuqing suddenly became somewhat strange.
"W-what's wrong?" Yun Yuqing shrank her shoulders, avoiding Aya's scrutinizing gaze.
"That dress...why didn't you want to give it back to me later?"
"I... I already told you, I tripped and fell on the way back from the venue, and some parts of the back got dirty..."
"Why not just hand it over to the shop and let them wash it?"
"I, I..." Yun Yuqing's face grew redder and redder, her head was lowered further and lower, and her voice was so soft that it sounded like a mosquito's buzz.
Seeing her in such an embarrassed state, Aya, who was already married to two men, immediately realized what was going on. She stared straight at Yun Yuqing, her eyes and mouth wide open, but she refused to utter a single word, leaving Yun Yuqing to continue burying her head in the sand like an ostrich escaping reality.
"You... no, you guys, you really dare to do that."
Now that things had come to this, Aya couldn't say anything more. After all, when she lent Yun Yuqing that dress, she had casually mentioned, "Don't you want him to see how beautiful you look?" She just didn't expect that this one look would trigger a chain reaction.
“These young people nowadays… no, your partner is older than Lao Guo.” Aya muttered to herself, making Yun Yuqing, who had just looked up, blush again.
"Then you have to tell me the truth."
"Okay, go ahead and ask," Yun Yuqing answered honestly.
"Between the two of you... who takes the initiative more?"
"Sister Aya?" Yun Yuqing stared wide-eyed at her best friend in disbelief.
"I... I was just curious. After all, I haven't been with Lao Guo for very long. You know, with the nature of his work, it's considered good if he's home for half the year." Aya seemed a little embarrassed. "But recently, it wasn't our honeymoon, so he took annual leave to stay home with me, and we..."
Yun Yuqing didn't know what kind of expression to make. She really didn't expect that Aya, whom she had always regarded as an older sister or even a mother, would one day ask her for help with her marital life.
