My Encounters with a Rural Young Woman: Aunt Xiaoyue - Chapter 095: The Village Madman

Children's lives are full of innocent fantasies. Some behaviors that adults see as naughty are very important to children. Those carefree childhood days, those endless times playing with mud, those games of hide-and-seek among the straw piles, those activities of shooting birds with slingshots and catching loaches are what children love to do most. Unfortunately, such time is sometimes interfered with by adults. Sometimes they play so much that they forget to go home for dinner, sometimes they play until they are covered in sweat, sometimes they play until they are covered in dirt, and they inevitably get scolded by their parents. If they are unlucky enough to have a father like Zhang Tiejun's with a bad temper, they might get a beating. That is really frustrating, scary, and unfair to children, and may even leave an indelible shadow on their young minds. Little Zhang Tiejun, you are really unlucky!
Reason is the root of human suffering. When a child is born, all they can do is cry and suckle when hungry—these are the instincts of life. They know nothing of reason. As they grow up, they enter the carefree world of childhood, with their own toys and games, completely absorbed in their play. They don't think about anything outside the game; they just want to have fun. They don't care about mud on their clothes, their silly laughter, or forgetting to go home for dinner. When they find something delicious, they eat it all up, even after they've vomited, still stuffing food into their mouths. They don't know what "seven-tenths full" means, nor do they care what "salt" is. They only care about the present moment, enjoying every happy second. Compared to adults, children's lives are irrational, but this irrational lifestyle brings more joy and fewer worries. They find happiness in it all, a joyful and harmonious existence—how wonderful!
In Shangbutou Village, there lived a madman named "Yunmei." He had a stubble-covered face and sharp features; if you dressed him up properly, he'd definitely be a "Sharp Brother" (a famous Chinese comedian known for his shrewish appearance). Yunmei would wander around the dam or fields every day, walking incredibly fast, almost like he was running. He'd look back every now and then, and whether anyone was around or not, he'd mutter loud curses to himself. His curses were incredibly loud, like thunder. We kids were terrified of Yunmei. If we saw him from afar in the fields, we'd immediately hide. If we were unlucky enough to run into him on the other side, some of the more timid kids would even cry. Yunmei's stubble and long hair made him look terrifying, and on top of that, he'd suddenly widen his eyes and yell at you for no reason. That sight really scared us kids!
"Yunmei" would wander around the dam or fields almost 365 days a year. He walked incredibly fast, his arms swinging back and forth at his waist. You could hear his thunderous cursing from afar. Although we children were all afraid of "Yunmei," we were also filled with curiosity about him. When there were many people, we would stand seven or eight meters away to watch him. Zhang Tiejun was a rather naughty boy. Sometimes when he saw "Yunmei" coming, he would hide in a corner and throw small stones at him. Once, he actually hit one of us, which made "Yunmei" stomp his feet in anger and his cursing grew even louder. We little rascals were so scared that we ran away as fast as we could, while Zhang Tiejun secretly laughed to himself!
According to the adults, Yunmei wasn't always crazy. She had a very happy family: a capable wife, a son, and a daughter who were not only sensible and obedient but also excelled in their studies. One day, while Yunmei and her husband were working in the fields, the siblings were playing in a pond. The younger brother accidentally fell in, and the older sister, reaching out to pull him out, also fell in. After finishing their work, Yunmei and her husband couldn't find their children and searched frantically, nearly going insane. The next day, people working in the fields found the siblings' bodies floating on the surface and quickly retrieved them to inform Yunmei and her husband. The moment Yunmei saw her children, she couldn't control herself and went insane. This blow was devastating for an honest and simple farmer. Yunmei's wife, however, was a very strong woman. After Yunmei's breakdown, she returned to her parents' home and remarried within two years. That this woman, after enduring such a heavy blow, was able to face life anew and start a new chapter in her life is truly a moving and admirable story!
After Yunmei's wife remarried, Yunmei and his mother lived together. This guy never did any work, just wandered around aimlessly and cursed. He was supported by his mother, who was over sixty. At a certain time, Yunmei would come home for dinner. His mother couldn't say anything to him; she had already prepared the meal and was waiting for him. How did this once happy family become like this? Gradually, everything returned to calm. What is the meaning of life? No one can say for sure. Just being alive is enough; having food to eat is enough!
