"Wrong Elevator, Wrong Door" - Chapter 97: Love Triangle

Around 10 p.m., Yan Yu went into the bathroom to take a shower. Cheng Xiaoyu was leaning against the headboard reading a book when Yan Yu's phone, which was on the bed, suddenly rang. Cheng Xiaoyu glanced at it subconsciously and saw Ye Lan's name. It was a text message from Ye Lan.
Cheng Xiaoyu hesitated for a moment before picking up Yan Yu's phone. She stared at Ye Lan's name for several seconds before pressing the "read" button. She knew it wasn't right to do this, but she really didn't trust Yan Yu as much as before.
Ye Lan's text message read: "I was so busy today, but I'll definitely remember to do it every day from now on. Thank you, Yu."
Cheng Xiaoyu opened her inbox again and found a text message from Yan Yu to Ye Lan. The message read, "You didn't take your medicine at noon today. Don't forget to take it again. Keep taking your medicine and your health will gradually improve. Take good care of yourself." The message was sent at 4:30 p.m., after she returned to the president's office from Ye Lan's place.
Cheng Xiaoyu angrily threw her phone onto the bed, frowned, and after thinking for a while, picked it up again and scrolled through their old text messages. Although most were brief and about work, Cheng Xiaoyu felt that Ye Lan's words, seemingly upright, had a deeper meaning. Yan Yu wasn't oblivious; she didn't believe he wouldn't see through it. Cheng Xiaoyu knew that some men would adopt an ambiguous attitude towards women who pursued them, neither accepting nor rejecting them, but she never knew Yan Yu was like that. Especially today, when he actually said something ambiguous like, "You need to take good care of yourself," Cheng Xiaoyu felt a growing sense of despair. Yan Yu wasn't the kind of person who couldn't handle relationships well; if he couldn't, it could only be because he didn't want to.
Yan Yu came out of the bathroom and saw Cheng Xiaoyu sitting on the bed in a daze, holding his phone. Yan Yu dried his hair and said, "What are you doing with my phone?"
Cheng Xiaoyu looked up at him. "Ye Lan just texted you, saying she'll remember to take her medicine every day from now on, and thanked you, Yu."
Yan Yu awkwardly put the towel down. "We were busy with a meeting at noon today. Later, when you brought Ye Lan's cup over, I realized she forgot to take her medicine. Her stomach problem is so serious, so I just reminded her not to forget to take her medicine in the future."
Yan Yu's phone slipped from Cheng Xiaoyu's hand onto the bed. She said, "Fine, you're always right, I don't want to talk to you anymore." Cheng Xiaoyu got off the bed, picked up her pillow, and was about to go downstairs.
Yan Yu quickly stopped her, laughing, "You're already going downstairs after only a few words? Your temper is getting worse and worse."
Cheng Xiaoyu said calmly, "Don't block my way, I don't want to argue with you."
Yan Yu scratched her hair in frustration. "What did I say that made you do this again? I just told her to remember to take her medicine. Ye Lan is in poor health and has no one to take care of her. She's actually quite pitiful. Xiao Yu, I swear I've never thought about anything with Ye Lan. I only see her as a friend."
Cheng Xiaoyu looked up at Yan Yu. "Every time I watch TV, I feel sorry for those women who cry and make a scene. I think it's pathetic for a woman to try to keep a man through such means. I don't want to do that. What happens between you and Ye Lan is your business. I'm just doing what I believe in." She then pushed Yan Yu away and tried to leave again. Yan Yu quickly stopped her, apologizing repeatedly. He said that his support for Ye Lan at work and his occasional concern for her in life were just friendships from high school. Since Cheng Xiaoyu didn't like it, he would never say such things again.
Cheng Xiaoyu sat on the bed, hugging her ostrich plushie and listening to him silently. After a long while, she said, "Yan Yu, I just don't understand why you're so good to Ye Lan. I think the only reason a man would be so accommodating to a woman is because he likes her."
Yan Yu repeatedly assured Cheng Xiaoyu that he only had eyes for her, but inwardly he sighed, "Silly girl, sometimes a man's willingness to grant a woman's every request doesn't necessarily mean he likes her. It could be that she has something on him, or that he owes her too much and can only make up for it in this way."
This summer was unusually hot; even in early August, it was still like a sauna outside. After that unpleasant text message incident, Cheng Xiaoyu hadn't found any more leverage against her. But the foundation of a relationship is trust; without trust, everything seemed suspicious and dangerous. The two of them had several minor arguments over trivial matters, and eventually, Ye Lan's name became a taboo subject—it couldn't be mentioned at all, or it would lead to an argument. This sweltering summer was particularly agonizing for Cheng Xiaoyu. Partly because of Ye Lan, and partly because of a constant unease, a suffocating feeling of impending doom. She couldn't bring herself to talk to Yan Yu about this, so she resorted to occasional unreasonable tantrums. Yan Yu, annoyed by her antics, sighed and said, "My little darling, what do you want?" Cheng Xiaoyu was speechless.
One weekend, Yan Yu said he was going to attend a banquet that evening. Around 5 p.m., he put on a sharp suit and prepared to leave. Yan Yu was tall and handsome, and dressed a little formally, he looked particularly dashing.
Cheng Xiaoyu looked him up and down and laughed, "What kind of banquet is this, dressed like this?"
Yan Yu straightened his shirt collar in front of the mirror. "It's the same old people. These pretentious banquets are actually quite boring." Before leaving, Yan Yu told Cheng Xiaoyu, "It's not hot outside now. Go out for a walk if you have nothing to do. I probably won't be back until nine or ten o'clock tonight."
Cheng Xiaoyu found the recent weather too hot and refused to go out during the day on weekends. She figured staying home in front of the computer all the time was boring. After Yan Yu left, she changed into a polka-dot dress and flat sandals and went out herself. Yan Yu's house wasn't far from the commercial area; it only took about ten minutes by bus. Cheng Xiaoyu strolled around for a while, then sat down on a high stool by the window in McDonald's, sipping her milkshake and watching the pedestrians outside. After only a couple of minutes, she actually witnessed something interesting.
A stylishly dressed, pretty girl emerged from the mall entrance, arm in arm with Wen Si and carrying two large shopping bags in the other. Cheng Xiaoyu saw her and waved to Wen Si through the glass, but he didn't see her. Cheng Xiaoyu glanced at her companion; the girl was fair-skinned and beautiful, a typical southern girl's appearance—so this was Wen Si's type. Just as they stepped off the mall's entrance, they encountered a tall, beautiful woman in a black leopard-print dress. All three stopped. Cheng Xiaoyu couldn't hear their conversation, but the two women spoke with haughty chins held high, while Wen Si looked slightly embarrassed. After a few words, the two clearly hostile women abandoned their pretense of peace and began to confront each other fiercely, their confrontation escalating. Passersby kept turning to stare. Wen Si, somewhat embarrassed, tugged at one and then the other, but no one paid him any attention.
Cheng Xiaoyu hurriedly pushed open the McDonald's door and went out, only to see the tall, beautiful woman slap Wen Si across the face. Wen Si grabbed her arm and said, "Are you still not done? If you're not happy, then leave."
The beautiful woman turned pale with anger. She shook off Wen Si's hand, pointed at his nose, and cursed him with things like "You scumbag, may you get hit by a car and die when you go out" before stomping away in her high heels.
Wen Si put his hands on his hips in frustration. Damn it, he'd completely lost face.
In the blink of an eye, Wen Si's left cheek had just narrowly avoided a blow, but his right cheek was slammed to the side.
The one who hit him was another beautiful woman. Wen Si was furious, "Are you fucking crazy? Get the hell away from me too!"
The beautiful woman retorted angrily, "Why did you have to sleep with that Bai Shanshan? She's the most despicable woman in all of Rongcheng. You have no taste whatsoever, ptooey!" She threw down the two shopping bags she was holding, stomped on them twice, and then strode away.
Even after the beautiful woman left, some people still chuckled and watched. Wen Si glared at them angrily, and only then did everyone reluctantly leave. Wen Si walked away dejectedly. Cheng Xiaoyu quickly caught up, picked up the two paper bags, and patted Wen Si on the shoulder.
Wen Si turned around, somewhat surprised, and said, "What are you doing here?"
Cheng Xiaoyu suppressed a laugh and said, "Brother Wen Si, don't be angry. They don't want you, but I do." Wen Si was Yan Yu's best friend, so Cheng Xiaoyu and Wen Si had become quite close over the past six months. Cheng Xiaoyu had heard about Wen Si's romantic escapades from Yan Yu before, but seeing it in person today made her realize that seeing is believing.
Wen Si said, "Xiaoyu, you're being unfair by making fun of me at a time like this."
Cheng Xiaoyu smiled and took Wen Si's arm. "I know Brother Wen Si is broad-minded and won't be upset over something like this. Okay, let's go." Cheng Xiaoyu pulled Wen Si along quickly, turned an intersection, and finally, no one was peeking at them anymore. Only then did Cheng Xiaoyu slow down and let go of Wen Si's arm. "Alright, Young Master Wen, tell me about this complicated love triangle."
Wen Si sighed with a bitter face, "Don't even mention it, it's all just trivial matters."
Cheng Xiaoyu chuckled and said, "Go ahead, go ahead." Gossip is a woman's nature, and Cheng Xiaoyu was no exception.
Wen Si glanced at Cheng Xiaoyu. "Little brat, look how happy you are. I met Bai Shanshan at a bar, just a few nights' fling. No chemistry at all when we're out having fun. Who knew she knew Wang Ying? Damn, what bad luck!"
Cheng Xiaoyu said, "Oh, so it seems Wang Ying is the real girlfriend?"
Wen Si snorted, "I think every woman in the world looks like my real girlfriend." As he spoke, his eyes rolled around on Cheng Xiaoyu.
Cheng Xiaoyu felt uneasy under his gaze and took a step back. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Wen Si stroked his chin and said, "Actually, you and Wang Ying have similar figures, so I'll choose you."
Cheng Xiaoyu's eyes widened. "What? Me?"
Wen Si stretched out his long arm and put his arm around Cheng Xiaoyu's shoulder, laughing, "Xiaoyu, I'm usually pretty good to you, right? You have to do me a favor today."
