"The Warbling of the Oriole" - Chapter 231

She did not stay. The first snowfall was not heavy, and she took advantage of the light snowfall to leave the village and return to the temple.
The people in the temple were all dressed in simple robes and monk's hats, their faces serene and untouched by worldly concerns. Although there were more people in the temple than in the village, it was unusually quiet.
She got up, washed up, and did her morning exercises as usual, but she kept getting distracted and ended up just going through the motions on the meditation cushion.
She went to eat vegetarian food, and she remembered the times when she and he sat side by side in the small hall, sharing soup and delicacies. In the past, he would add food for her, and now she would serve soup for him.
She returned to her room to copy scriptures, but her tiny characters were difficult to write smoothly, and ink dripped down, ruining half of the text. She put down the scriptures and picked up a local history book from beside her desk.
When she was reading to him at the estate, she asked him what he was reading. He replied, "Read me the books you used to like."
She read to him a local history book that she had brought from Anyuan, a book she had read since childhood and was almost falling apart from being flipped through. He found it interesting and discussed it with her for a while.
Lying in bed at night, she also began to toss and turn.
All the memories of our past acquaintance with him resurfaced:
She first met him and wanted to slap him; he helped her up at the Rainbow Bridge; he gave her an umbrella; their affair at the Diecui Tower; he settled her in the Fu'an Hall; he made a promise; he took care of her; he saved her; he made another promise; he discovered her affair with Qi Shixiang; he saw through her affair with Qi Shixiang again; he no longer kept his promise; the two separated; he saved her again; and they separated again.
Through twists and turns, the two had known each other for four years.
She was a light sleeper at night, and in that half-asleep state, her foot slipped, as if she were about to fall into an abyss. In that instant, she saw Cen Yunzhou, Qi Shixiang, and another person whose figure was indistinct in the distance standing in front of her.
Cen Yunzhou was closest to her, and he was the first to reach out his hand to her. She extended her hand to him, but suddenly a huge wave separated them. He drifted further and further away from her across the rolling waves until he disappeared from sight.
Her hand was grasped by Qi Shixiang, who was some distance away, and he pulled her back from the precipice. She breathed a sigh of relief, only to see the mountain beneath her slowly crumble and collapse. A warhorse galloped towards her, and Qi Shixiang, seeing this, leaped onto it, trying to subdue the horse. But the horse carried him away towards the horizon.
She saw the man in the distance running closer and closer to her, his pale face solemn, his robes and black hair billowing in the wind. She wept bitterly, wondering why she hadn't recognized him. Even if he were standing further away, why couldn't she recognize him at a glance? Filled with regret, shame, shock, and fear, she cried out to him, "Ah Xiao! Ah Xiao!"
"Give me your hand!" he said, extending his hand toward her.
She tried to give him her hand, but she couldn't grasp it; there was always a gap between their hands.
He said, "Come here!"
The earth beneath her feet crumbled and a nameless force dragged her backward, yet she couldn't take a step to run towards her.
He then said, "Come here!"
Her heart burned with anxiety, yet her legs remained firmly planted. Suddenly, she stumbled, but to her surprise, she was still standing perfectly still. She looked up and saw Qi Shixiao falling off the cliff opposite her.
She screamed, "Ah Xiao!" and opened her eyes to see the blue cloth curtain of Famiao Temple hanging above her. She was drenched in sweat, tears streaming down her face. Wiping away her tears, she quickly changed her undergarments and hurriedly got up.
She pushed open the door and went out. The snow wasn't heavy, but it was still falling. A gust of cold wind blew by, and she shivered. She went back to get her cloak and put it on before going to find the young nun on night duty at the temple.
That little nun was at the age where she slept very soundly; it was really difficult for her to be on night duty. Awakened by Ruying, she groggily opened her eyes and asked, "Is there something you need, Layman An?"
Ru Ying said, "I would like to go down the mountain. Could you please call a car for me? I will go down with you."
After saying that, he took out a piece of jade from his pocket and said, "This matter is important, and I cannot disturb you. Please take this piece of jade."
Xiao Ni glanced at the hourglass and said, "It's now the hour of Chou (1-3 AM). Can't you wait another two hours, Master An?"
Ru Ying said, "I can't wait."
Xiao Ni looked at the jade pendant, liking it but too embarrassed to accept it, saying, "These items are too valuable for me to accept. The pastries that Master An brought for me are delicious; I've never tasted them before in my life. Please bring me more pastries in the future."
Ru Ying laughed and said, "I am originally from Anyuan, but I am forced to stay in the capital. It is already a great blessing that I was able to come to Famiao Temple and meet you. Keep this jade as a memento. I will not be staying at the temple for long in the future. As for pastries, I will bring them to you when I have time."
The young nun asked, "Is Layman An leaving?"
She said, "Yes, we come as fate dictates, and we leave as fate dictates."
Little Ni had no idea how extraordinary her fate was, that it would lead a lonely woman to brave the wind and snow in the dead of winter to go down the mountain in the middle of the night to hire a carriage and travel a bumpy road to reach her.
She paid the driver enough for the fare and arrived at the village before the snow started to fall heavily.
The manor owner kept a dog, but perhaps sensing the familiar scent, the dog didn't bark. She knocked on the manor door, waking the old steward as well.
Forgetting all etiquette, she asked, "How is the young master?"
The old steward was already surprised to see her appear, and was even more astonished to hear her question: "What news did you hear, young lady? The young master has been at the estate all day and has not gone out. He is just like usual and there is nothing wrong with him."
She said, "Uncle Lao, I want to go see my cousin."
The old steward, unaware that his young master had given the young lady a potent drug yesterday, nodded and said, "Please go ahead, young lady."
She walked through the reception room and headed towards his quarters in the back of the main courtyard.
She removed the hood of her cloak, revealing a delicate face. The servant standing at the door knew her well. Upon seeing her, he hesitated, unsure whether to open the door for her.
She smiled at them, gently pushed the door open, and quietly closed it.
There were no lights or candles in the house. It was around the beginning of the Yin hour (3-5 AM). A thin layer of snow on the roof and treetops outside shone through the newly changed gauze curtains on the doors and windows, illuminating the house brightly.
She took off her cloak and stood by his bedside to look at him.
He slept peacefully, with long eyebrows, a high nose, and thin lips; his eyelashes were thick and tightly closed. She leaned down and kissed his eyelashes, calling out, "Ah Xiao."
