Alcohol can make oral cells more susceptible to HIV infection during oral sex.
This is the first study to examine HIV infection from the perspective of how alcohol affects cells.
Previous studies have found that unprotected sex after drinking alcohol increases the risk of HIV infection; the above study, focusing on the effects of alcohol on oral mucosal cells, found that oral sex after drinking alcohol can increase the risk of HIV infection in oral mucosal cells by three to six times.
Researchers collected oral mucosal cells from HIV-infected individuals and exposed these cells to alcohol of the same alcohol content as different types of beer. They then exposed these cells to HIV cells implanted with green fluorescent protein to observe whether the virus could infect the oral mucosal cells. The results showed that after ten minutes of exposure to 4% alcohol, the chances of oral mucosal cells becoming infected with HIV increased three to six times. HIV specifically attacks CD4+ white blood cells, and oral mucosal cells typically contain a high concentration of white blood cells.
HIV "hijacks" these white blood cells, injecting its own genes into the white blood cell's DNA, causing the latter to produce more viral particles, which in turn infect more cells. The host cells of CD4+ white blood cells are eventually killed by the toxin, but scientists still do not know the mechanism. The human immune system declines as the number of CD4+ white blood cells decreases, and when it reaches a certain level, a diagnosis of AIDS can be made.
