The guards at the front noticed something was wrong and quickly turned around. The guards jumped off their horses and ran over, drawing their swords.
Upon encountering the army, the rioters surrounding the carriage shouted and scattered.
The captain of the guards apologized at the carriage window: "I failed in my duty of protection, and Miss Lu and the young master were frightened. Please punish me, young master." Lu Qing jumped off the carriage and looked around blankly. She found that there were still quite a few thugs, wandering the streets in groups of three or five, waiting by the roadside to throw stones and other objects at passing coachmen. As soon as the carriage stopped, they would pounce on it like wolves and rob it.
The rioters pried open roadside shops and rushed in to loot. Several shops selling clothing and local specialties were broken into. The rioters took everything that could be eaten or used. They smashed and burned everything that they couldn't finish eating or take away. Some shops were already ablaze with flames and thick smoke. They didn't seem to be looting for profit, but rather they seemed to be purely thinking about destruction and venting their anger.
A brewery was smashed open, and rioters rushed in, shouting and yelling. They jumped into the brewing vats and drank heavily. Soon, some were dead drunk on the ground, some were laughing loudly, and some were crying and shouting, "The end of the world is here! The end of the world is here!"
A drunkard whistled at Lu Qing from afar: "Beautiful lady, are you lonely?"
The thugs burst into wild laughter, but thankfully, they didn't dare to approach because Lu Qing was surrounded by guards.
A sense of despair and madness spread among the crowd, and the air was thick with the pungent aroma of fermented liquor…
