"We Are Both Guilty" - Chapter 40: The Gluttonous Little Monk

The siblings remained calm and adopted a strategy of "if the enemy doesn't move, we won't move," each standing still to see what the old Taoist priest was up to.
The old Taoist priest stroked his goatee. Seeing that the two men neither moved nor asked any questions, he stopped pretending and simply sighed, "Very well, you two come in with me." After saying that, he turned around and entered the Gulingcheng Temple first.
Lu Jue and Lu Ying exchanged a glance, their understanding unspoken. In broad daylight, even though there was no one else around, it was unlikely that this old Taoist priest would rob them of their money and sexually assault them in the temple, or even kill them to silence them. So Lu Jue reached out his hand to Lu Ying, took her hand, and followed the old Taoist priest into the Gulingcheng Temple.
The temple is not small, with three courtyards in total. The first courtyard houses a huge statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva.
This was Lu Ying's first time here. Beforehand, when she was researching, she only looked up places in the temple that were suitable for taking photos, without paying attention to which Bodhisattva was actually enshrined in the temple. Now, as soon as she saw Guanyin Bodhisattva, she couldn't help but think of Guanyin who grants children. This was mainly because she was too influenced by TV dramas, which made this association subconsciously.
The old Taoist priest leading the way seemed to have eyes in the sky, as if he knew what Lu Ying was thinking. He suddenly said, "This Guanyin Bodhisattva doesn't grant children. She was a daughter of an official who performed good deeds for her younger brother more than 600 years ago."
Lu Ying was startled upon hearing this and involuntarily looked up at Lu Jue. Lu Jue was also looking down at her at the same time. As their eyes met, Lu Jue spoke, "What do you mean by that, Daoist Master?"
"Hey, why call me Taoist priest? It makes me sound old. Just call me Zhiyan." Zhiyan stopped and turned to look at the siblings.
Isn't this old enough? Lu Ying thought to herself as she looked at Zhiyan's wrinkled face.
Zhiyan seemed to know what she was thinking, and stroked his goatee, saying, "It's just a physical body. No matter how it changes, as long as the soul doesn't age, it won't age."
Lu Ying secretly bit her lip, thinking to herself, "How come this old Taoist priest seems to be able to read minds? He always seems to know exactly what I'm thinking."
"Then may I ask, what is the origin of this temple? Isn't it a temple that people built spontaneously in ancient times to seek the Buddha's protection?" Lu Ying was afraid that Zhiyan would reveal what she was thinking again, so she took the initiative and asked the question.
"No, no." As they spoke, the group had already arrived at the second courtyard, which was obviously the courtyard where tourists were usually accommodated and served vegetarian meals.
Zhiyan pushed open one of the doors. Inside, it resembled a banquet hall. It wasn't very large, but it was furnished with antique-style wooden tables and chairs. There were also three cups of steaming tea on the table, clearly prepared in advance by someone who knew they would be coming.
Zhiyan gestured for them to sit down, and the siblings didn't stand on ceremony and sat down directly. Lu Ying even reached out and touched the teacup, which was slightly hot, obviously it had been poured out some time ago, and she guessed that the tea was just the right temperature to drink without being too hot.
Then, as expected, Zhiyan picked up his teacup and drank it all in one gulp. After finishing, he put down the teacup, smacked his lips, and continued his previous topic: "About six hundred and twenty years ago, a young lady from an official family commissioned the construction of this temple to pray for the well-being of her younger brother, who was a general. Whenever her brother went to war, she would bring her servants to this temple to pray, eat vegetarian food, and chant Buddhist scriptures. She would only leave when her brother returned victorious. During her absence, a trusted confidant would look after the temple. However, this family still couldn't escape the fate of having no descendants. Alas..."
"How could he be childless? Did the general die on the battlefield?" Lu Ying asked curiously.
"Not exactly. That general started fighting on the battlefield at the age of fourteen, accumulating countless military achievements. In the end, he achieved great success and even avoided the suspicion of the royal family. At the age of twenty-seven, he successfully retired to the second line, living in seclusion in the city with the title of Marquis Protector of the Nation. However, he died before he turned thirty." Zhiyan was a little thirsty as she spoke, so she poured herself another cup of tea.
But Lu Jue frowned deeply upon hearing this, his heart pounding with unease and confusion. So he remained silent and didn't ask any questions.
Lu Ying, however, remained curious. "Ah, how could he die so young? Did the war leave him with some incurable illness? Medical conditions were poor in ancient times; even a cold or fever could easily kill someone."
Zhiyan shook his head, revealing a mysterious smile, "The reason for his life or death is a clan secret, it cannot be spoken of, it cannot be spoken of."
"A clan secret?" Lu Jue immediately grasped the key point.
"Ahem, my ancestor was that trusted guardian of the temple. I'm the 22nd generation. My ancestors instructed me that the matter of exterminating the clan is not to be discussed. In short, whether it's the general's death or anything else, I won't say anything. Don't even think about getting anything out of me. Anyway, the task of guarding the temple ends with my generation. You must not disobey the ancestral teachings while I'm here." Zhiyan blinked, somewhat emotional.
Extermination of the entire clan?
Lu Jue glanced at him, then focused on the key point again, but did not continue to ask questions. However, the strange unease in his heart grew stronger.
Lu Ying, standing to the side, looked somewhat dazed, seemingly lost in thought.
Zhiyan finished another cup of tea, then got up and left. As she passed Lu Jue, she patted him on the shoulder meaningfully.
"Go take some photos. The monks should be coming to clean up in a little over an hour." With that, Zhiyan drifted away.
After Zhiyan's figure disappeared through the doorway, Lu Ying seemed to come back to her senses and asked, "Huh, when did Zhiyan leave?"
Lu Jue frowned, then answered irrelevantly, "Did you hear what Zhiyan said just now?"
“I heard that.” Lu Ying frowned as well. “But for a moment just now, my brain went off track. I don’t know where my mind went. All I could think about was an ancient woman kneeling here to worship Guanyin.”
Upon hearing this, Lu Jue frowned even more deeply, but instead of continuing the topic, he said, "Let's go quickly, let's go take some photos. The monks in the temple will be clearing away the snow in a little while."
Upon hearing this, Lu Ying stopped worrying and, along with Lu Jue, grabbed their DSLR cameras and headed outside.
This temple truly lives up to its reputation as a wealthy family's construction. Even after hundreds of years of weathering storms, it remains magnificent. The scenery in the courtyard is also beautiful and diverse, with red plum blossoms blooming amidst the white snow in every nook and cranny.
With the beautiful Lu Ying and the incredibly skilled photographer Lu Jue, the success rate of the photos was quite good in just over an hour. In the end, the two chose to take a photo together under a red plum tree in full bloom.
Lu Jue fixed the camera on a tripod, then set the timer for shooting. He ran to the tree and stood next to Lu Ying. Lu Ying took Lu Jue's arm and rested her head on his shoulder. The two looked intimate and comfortable. Moreover, one of them was wearing Hanfu and the other was wearing modern clothes, as if they had crossed time and space, which gave them a unique charm.
Beep beep beep—
Just as the shutter was about to open automatically, someone kicked the red plum tree behind him, causing the snow on the tree to fall. Lu Jue instinctively turned around and reached out to shield Lu Ying's head from the falling snow. Lu Ying also instinctively looked up, and the camera captured this moment forever.
Then, a little monk jumped up to the two of them with a grin, stretched out his chubby little hand, and said ingratiatingly, "Ten yuan a time, artificial snowmaking, you won't lose out, you won't be cheated."
Lu Ying looked down when she heard the sound and saw a boy who looked about five or six years old. He was chubby, fair-skinned, and had a shaved head. He was grinning and reaching out to her for money.
"You child, you're being unreasonable. I haven't even blamed you for knocking down a tree full of snow and freezing me, and you're already asking me for money?" Lu Ying let go of Lu Jue, squatted down to be at eye level with the little monk, and deliberately teased him.
"Oh my, it's you?" The little monk was surprised when he saw Lu Ying's face, and his chubby little face trembled.
"Have you seen her?" Lu Jue squatted down and asked.
The young monk nodded. "Yes, I've seen her. There's a room in my courtyard where her portrait hangs!"
"Oh? A portrait?" Lu Jue raised an eyebrow, deliberately provoking him. "I don't believe it. This is our first time here. There's no way we would leave a portrait."
"Really, really, that's a forbidden area in our temple. Every time I went there to play, my master would spank me!" The little monk said, rubbing his bottom as he recalled the spankings he had been given.
"Oh? But this is really my first time here. Why don't you take me to see it? If it's really there, I'll give you all these snacks." Lu Ying also became interested. She took out several bags of preserved plums from Lu Jue's backpack to tempt the little monk.
The little monk looked around and was indeed tempted. He was making money by artificially creating snow so he could secretly buy snacks behind his master's back. However, he was clever enough to make a quick, quick decision with his round eyes. He then negotiated with Lu Ying: "It's not impossible, but you have to give me all the food and drinks in your backpack. Otherwise, I won't take you there. That's a forbidden area. If Master finds out I took you there, we'll definitely get a spanking. How can a few bags of snacks be enough?"
Lu Ying smiled upon hearing this and hooked her little finger with her finger. "Pinky promise, it's a deal. You take us to see it, and after we see it, we'll give you this bag of food and drinks."
The little monk reached out his chubby little hand and hooked it with Lu Ying's, but his mind was still racing. "You have to give me a bag of preserved plums to eat before we go. It's called a 'deposit.' Whether we can go or not, I can't just make this trip for nothing, can I?"
"Heh, little thing, you're not losing out at all." Lu Ying flicked the little monk's bald head lightly on the forehead before handing him a packet of preserved plums.
The little monk took the package, opened it, took out a preserved plum, and popped it into his mouth. It was sweet and sour, just the taste he liked. After getting what he wanted, he smacked his lips and said, "Let's go, I'll take you to see the portrait!" Then he wiggled his chubby little legs and led the way.
Lu Ying and the others didn't even have time to put away their cameras. Lu Ying wanted to ask the little monk to wait, but Lu Jue said that there were hardly any people in the temple, so the cameras shouldn't be stolen. However, if they went over too late, the other monks in the temple might discover them and they wouldn't be able to see the portrait.
Lu Ying thought Lu Jue's words made a lot of sense, so she followed him.
