Choosing a partner couldn't be too close. The city wasn't big, and if we happened to know each other or met through some channel, it would be troublesome, at least quite awkward. This selection process took a long time. The main part was chatting; if we felt someone was suitable, my wife would also chat with them. Finally, a couple we were basically satisfied with came into our view.
Their age, occupation, and education were similar to ours, only a bit heavier. Otherwise, there was nothing incompatible. Our first meeting was a dinner. My wife and I, due to the nature of our work, are very punctual and conscientious in everything we do, so we arrived a few minutes earlier than them. Both sides felt it was acceptable, but not 100% satisfactory. At least they seemed sincere. There wasn't much conversation during the dinner. After all, for these kinds of events, getting a general understanding of the basics is enough. It was clear that the husband was very satisfied with my wife, constantly trying to curry favor. I didn't really like his wife; I didn't feel any romantic attraction, just that she seemed honest and reliable. Actually, that was the most important thing.
Nothing much happened after dinner. We spent some more time together afterward, but no one brought up the idea of taking things further. Especially me; I felt that the other person's wife wasn't as good as mine, so I had no intention of pursuing anything more. Several days passed in a flash, and we still chatted sporadically on QQ . Everyone seemed indifferent, probably just letting things take their course.
Several months passed in the blink of an eye, and the interest in making friends remained high, but it seemed the time wasn't quite right to take real-world action. That summer, the children went on vacation, and the opportunity naturally arose.
