Zhu Lian Gu
This man was born in the thirty-first year of the Jiajing reign (1552), and was twenty-eight years old. His name was Zhu Daoming. His father was a high-ranking official, and his mother was a first-rank lady. He was born in Yongjia County, Kuangzhou City, Zhejiang Province.
He married the daughter of Minister Wang of the Ministry of War, who was naturally beautiful and charming.
The couple were deeply in love. However, this young master Zhu had read a book on prostitution since childhood, which said that a wife is not as good as a concubine, a wife is not as good as a maid, a maid is not as good as a prostitute, and a prostitute is not as good as a stolen affair. Just as she drew the water back, she bumped into Young Master Zhu.
Lian Gu hurriedly took the bag and went inside, closing the door behind her. Upon seeing her, the young master exclaimed, "What a beautiful woman! So she's been coming to my house all this time. How come I never knew she was here?"
Young Master Zhu hurried home and summoned his servants to ask, "What are the names of the people living in those houses a few days past the well? What do they do for a living? Which family rents them?"
This matter was always handled by Zhu Ji, so he hurriedly summoned Zhu Ji and said, "Why has there always been such a beautiful woman here? Why didn't you inform me?"
Zhu Yan said, "This family's surname is Wu, and they moved here last year. Because his brother is a rough man who serves as a soldier in the camp, he kills and sets fires at the drop of a hat. They are afraid that the young master will be implicated in this matter and his wife will be implicated, so they dare not tell him."
Young Master Zhu said, “I am powerful and ambitious, and I love fame. I will not seek him out. How dare he come looking for me? You do not know that I am destined to be like this in my previous life. If I am not blessed, how can I afford to enjoy it?”
He added, “The Wu family’s wife must make plans for me. How could such a beautiful woman be willing to give up her?”
Zhu Gu said, “Although Wu Yun is rough and reckless, his brother Wu Xing is a very honest man. How can the couple support his meager business? It would be better if I went to lure him to the yamen and explained the situation to him. If he agrees, the magistrate will lend him three or five taels of capital and waive his rent. If he refuses, kick him out of the house and find another reason to cause trouble for him. Explain the pros and cons, and he will agree on his own.”
The young master said, "The money is nothing. As long as the matter is accomplished and the promise is made, I will reward you handsomely."
After hearing this, Zhu Ji happily went to the Wu family.
Just then, Wu Xing returned. Zhu Ji took Wu Xing's hand, and they walked and talked until they reached the head of Zhu Ji's office. They ended up sitting down in Zhu Ji's room.
Zhu Ji then said, “My husband is a very romantic and generous man. However, he’s a bit too much of a womanizer. When he sees a beautiful woman, he’s like a fly to blood, he won’t let her go, he’ll get her no matter what. Once they’re on good terms, he’ll give her ten or half a catty of silver. If she doesn’t get what she wants, he’ll make sure her family is ruined and destroyed, and he won’t let her off until he gets the woman. It’s laughable how those women are so obedient, taking advantage of a little money and then trying to provoke him. Even if they escape death, they’ll still insist on getting what they want!”
Wu Xing said, "He must be incredibly wealthy and powerful to be able to do this kind of business. If it were someone like us, we wouldn't even be able to dream of it."
Zhu Gu said, “There’s something I’m suspicious about today, so I came to ask you about it. This morning, my son saw a woman around twenty years old drawing water at the well outside your door. He saw her and then, like a leech attracted to blood, he latched on and questioned all the brothers. He said she was from the Wu family. I think the only one with the surname Wu near the well is you. When you get home, ask your magistrate if he went out to draw water today. If it wasn’t him, that’s fine, but if it was you, then it’s another matter of concern.”

Wu Xing said, "How can you know if it's powerful or not if you don't believe it?"
Zhu Ji said, “What I just said, if you don’t obey him, he will poison you. If you move to live with my brother, he will accuse me of adultery with your wife and stealing some of her gold and silver from your house. Fearing that the matter will be discovered soon, he will secretly move to my brother’s house. At that time, I will be subjected to some minor torture at his behest and confess. What will you do then?”
Upon hearing this, Wu Xing stared in disbelief and asked, "What happened?"
Zhu Ji said, "If we agree to his terms, An Po will be happy and we can get some money from him as capital. Besides, the wife will still be yours. No one will know, only the four of us will. What's so difficult about that?"
Wu Xing said, "I'm afraid my Aunt Lian is not willing."
Zhu Ji laughed and said, "When a woman secretly tries to seduce another man without her husband's knowledge, how could she refuse if her husband clearly wanted it? 被公子抱至床沿，扯下小衣，一双玉腿，晶莹粉嫩！
莲姑乃无毛白牝玉户，一抹桃缝光洁可人，公子喜不胜收，推倒床上，拍开粉腿，插入玉杵，恣意云雨起来。
莲姑既失身，也不再矜持羞涩，挺着牝户，扭腰摆臀，曲意奉迎。
须臾，雨住云停，脱衣就枕。到五更，重整余情。天明起身，公子自送莲姑归家。
正是：
玉莺声，沉影绝。素手相携，转过花阴月。莲步轻移缓又软，怕人瞧见欲进羞。
洞房幽，小径窄。拂袖出门，踏破花心月。钟鼓楼中声未歇，欢娱妙境佳人怯。
拥香拿，竹两结。捏雨扔云，暗把春偷设。苦短良宵容易别，试听好语深深说。
口脂香，罗带给。订海誓山，尽向枕边设。可恨鸡声催晓别，临别犹自低低说。
自此，或时来接，或时间隔几日，两下做起，算来也有一个月了。
莲姑一日与丈夫说：“你如今作速往杭州租下房屋，快快回来，与你商议。”
伍星取些盘缠银子，往杭州不提。
且说朱公子一日自来要接莲始到家，莲姑道：“我那丈夫让我与你做了勾当，朱吉管家原说公子抬举我们一场富贵，如今弄得衣食反艰难了，我便说公子是个贵人，他怎生肯食言，只是我不曾开口，说他忘怀了。如今你打听外边有什么好做的生意，我与公子藉百十两银子，与你做本钱，趁将出来，只要准准还他便了。他今日欢欢喜喜，往宁波间做誊鱼的生意去了。若是回来，要公子扶持他一番，也是抬举我一场。”
公子笑道：“这百把银了，极是小事。今晚你到我家下去睡。”
莲姑道：“今晚家下无人，你寻别人去罢。”
公子道：“我想着你，要与你睡哩。”
莲姑道：“我这边房屋虽小，且是精洁，只没有好舖陈。你着朱吉另取一被褥来到我家睡了罢。”
公子进房一看，说道：“果然精洁。”
随到家中，忙着朱吉取了被褥枕头，放在伍家。
莲姑故意放出许多妖烧体态，媚语甜言，奉承他这一百两银子。
公子最喜莲姑无毛白牝，故意仅着肚兜，半露玉户，房中走动，诸多引诱！
朱公子十分着迷，莲姑又去取了他头上一枝金挖耳，到后来二人做事比每常大不相同。
公子问道：“与你相好月余，并不曾见你如此有趣。缘何今晚这般有兴！”
莲姑道：“在你家书房做事，恐隔墙有耳，故不放胆。今在我家，两边又无近邻，止得你我两个，还怕谁人，拘束怎的？”
公子道：“原来为此。”
从此再不到家中去也，自此，把这朱公子弄待火热，无日不来。
且说伍星一到杭州，他道此处乃省会之地，若居于此，恐乡试秀才或衙门人役往来看见反为不妙，不如往海宁县中住下，那个寻得我着！
竟搭了船，往海宁县北寺前，租下一间住房，交了房银，遂往温州归来。
莲姑正出后门，见朱公子半醉不醒的。撞将过来。莲姑接着笑道：“我特来接你，我丈夫拿了银子方才往宁波去来。”
公子堆下笑来道：“姐姐，如今同你往家去也。”
一步步同到伍家，莲姑把酒大碗送去与他吃，一块儿坐下，搂搂亲亲，两个调得火滚。
公子带酒，又行了些房事，莲姑重新又灌他十来碗，酒至黄昏时候，果然人事也不知了。
伍云兄弟已进了门，伍星忙送妻子下了船，连忙进城赶到家中。兄弟二人把朱公子抬在地下，将上下大小衣服脱得精赤，巾结金簪，尽情取了。
把舖陈卷起，衣服之类打做一困放下，伍云预备下五色笔墨，把公子画上一个天蓝鬼脸，红眼晴，红嘴唇，浑身五彩，画了一个活鬼，就似那迎神会的千里眼、顺风耳一般模样。
又把沥青火上熬熔，用了禾梳把他头发梳通，蘸了沥青于木梳之上，又梳他头发，那发见了沥青，都直矗起来，就是那吕纯阳收的柳树精一般，十分怕人。
装点得完，已是五鼓，城门已是开了。着伍星拿了石块，到朱衙大门上擂鼓一般乱打，那门公报人里边，一众管家想道，这门打得古怪，唤起了二十余人，各执了枪棍在手，方才开门。
伍星听见开门，上楼驼了舖盖出城。
这伍云手执青柴，一把提起朱公子，直到街上，着实打来，朱公子还是半醒的，叫声呵哟，便往家中走来。
恰撞着朱家正开大门，火光之中见一活鬼往内抢人，众家人都吃一吓。吶一声喊，乱打乱溯。
公子口中叫说：“是我。”人多乱杂，那里听得出，直赶到公子书房中。
朱道明急了，竟往自己床下扒进去躲。
一众家人道：“好了，大家一齐乱溯。”
弄得血腥气臭得甚紧，想到一定死了，天已大明。众人把钓钉枪钩将出来，仔细一看，见身上画的一般，把水去拨在身上，见肉是白的，许多枪孔。
又将水把脸上一泼，雪白一副好脸。众人上前仔细一认，叫声：“不好了，不知被何人用此恶计，如何是好？”
他父母在朝，妻妾俱在家的，听见丈夫被人谋害，看了尸首，便唿天抢地一般哭将起来。
家中男妇大小一齐大哭。
止有朱吉说：“昨夜相公在伍家去歇，一定是他家谋害。”
一齐去看，止留得一张桌子，两张竹椅，一张凉床，其余寸草也无。
大家齐说是他谋害，不必言矣。往军营来寻伍云，众行伍道：“他告退钱粮，己五日矣。”
众人只得赴府告理。
那太守见是当朝公子，自然准理，差捕究竟起来，说道：“人是你家家人戳死的，与他何干，况又无証据，乃捕风捉影之事，那里究得。”
这案子慢拖缓放了。
这伍家船只，竟往海宁住下。莲姑取出前银，兄弟二人贩些杂柴生意，己发千金。
不想莲姑向与朱公子爱极之时，身已受孕，后来十月满足，生下一个儿子，眉清目秀，宛如朱道明一般。
伍云道：“嫂嫂在上，此子不是亲骨肉，仍是朱家孽种。我兄弟二人辛勤苦力挣了家私，终不然又还仇人之子。拿来溺死了罢。”
伍星见说：“贤弟见教极是。”
莲姑急止曰：
“不可，虽非丈夫所生，实是妾身所育。怎忍一旦弃之。如今叔叔年已长大，尚无婶婶，妾身年幼，必然还有生育。存下此于，待断哺乳，待后生了子侄，将此子付还朱家，使他不绝宗后，亦算一点阴德。朱家虽是谋奸，原系明求，亦非强占。百有余金，亦不为霸。理合将此子断乳送还，使朱家不幸中之幸也。”
伍氏兄弟连声道好。
其年，伍云娶下一房妻室，就是海宁东门外人，次年就生一个儿子，莲姑生的已是三岁，那疮痘己出完了，遂断了乳。
莲姑次年又生一子，与伍星道：“如今子侄都有，可将朱子送还。”
伍星道：“怎好送去？”
莲姑道：“谁着你上门送去，但须我写数字，付与朱吉，直道其事。待至夜间，把字缚在朱儿身上，天明开门，他家便知分晓了。”
伍云道：“嫂嫂，你写下书来，待我与你做个囊，送他去罢。”莲姑次日写了一封字儿，又把向时取公子头上的金挖耳，一总封了，缚在朱儿身上。
炒了干粮炊饼之类，伍云取了盘缠，别了兄嫂妻子，往永嘉而来。
到了永嘉，进得城来，已是上更时分。
投了酒肆，吃了酒饭，睡到天色饭明，抱了小儿竟至朱家门首，轻轻放下，他即时去。
只见朱家开门，正是朱吉往街上来，听得小儿哭响，连忙回头，一个三四岁的娃子哭响。
朱吉一见，吃了一惊，往下一看，那娃子面貌竟与亡过的公子容貌一般。又见衣带上缚着一封书，上写温州府水嘉县朱府管家开拆。
朱吉想道：“不知什么原故。”
正在那里思量，不想朱尚书终日为着无有子孙，十分烦恼，其夜三更时分，他与夫人皆得一梦，梦见儿子说与爹娘：“不须烦恼，你的孙于今日到了。”
醒来，夫妻二人正在说梦，两下一般言语。只见朱吉把了娃儿进内，传与王尚书小姐得知。
那公子妻房听见，忙忙传与公婆。

The daughter-in-law said, "We've never been able to find him before. He must be here. Quickly send people to search everywhere and bring him to the authorities for punishment."
Minister Zhu said, “No, that was a disaster brought upon our unworthy son. Besides, a person’s life and death are predetermined before birth, how can they be changed? Now that he has returned this son, it is an immense favor. If he had encountered an unscrupulous person, he would have been filled with hatred and would have died long ago. Moreover, the poem he sent even advised us to accumulate good deeds and cultivate virtue. How can we expect to be rewarded with special favor? Today we are fortunate amidst misfortune, having gained a grandson even though we had no grandson.”
He immediately instructed the steward to bathe and dress the child, then invited all the relatives to come and drink together. They discussed the details and named the child Wei Zai Hui at the banquet.
From then on, the Minister released animals and refrained from killing, provided alms to monks, repaired bridges and roads, cared for the elderly and helped the poor, decorated Buddha statues, reduced rents and exempted interest, observed vegetarianism and recited Buddhist scriptures, wrote with respect, and forbade his family members from causing trouble or harming others, and never thought of his official duties.
A once extremely wicked household has been transformed into a tranquil world.
Miss Wang devoted herself to looking after Zaihui until he entered school at the age of twenty-one and passed the imperial examination one year.
Later, realizing that Wu Jialian was his mother, he sent people everywhere to search for her, but to no avail.
The Wu brothers were already extremely wealthy, and their sons and nephews all prospered after they entered school.
