Ma Yuzhen

Ma Yuzhen
In Yongjia County, Wenzhou Prefecture, Zhejiang Province, there lived a man named Wang Wen, who was over thirty years old. He worked as a clerk in the county and had a partner named Zhou Quan. They both served under the county magistrate. Whenever there was an order to be made, the two men would stand up and collect money from the people.
These constables, nicknamed "God, Tiger, and Dog," are good at their jobs. When they arrive at someone's place, they are treated with great respect, living like gods. But when it comes to asking for money, one coin isn't enough; they'll ask for ten or a hundred coins at a time, like tigers.
Two accomplices took a murder warrant one day and went to the murderer's house to carry it out.
The murderer was a wealthy man, and he was unwilling to come out! He asked someone to bring official documents, promised a plate, and paid more than a hundred taels of silver in total before he would do things in a way that would settle the case.
After the two men received their share of the silver, Zhou Quan contributed some to buy three sacrificial animals as a lucky offering, while Wang Wen also contributed his share to make his own arrangements.
It took the two of them half a day to finish the task of lighting the fire.
The two men drank together, and Zhou Quan said, "My friend, marriage is a natural thing. I advise you to get married. You're already in your late twenties, and it's very inconvenient to have no one to help you in the kitchen. There's a widow across the street named Ma Wangzhen, who's twenty-three years old this year. Her husband died two years ago, and she has no parents-in-law or in-laws. She only had one daughter, who died last month. Her husband didn't even leave her with ten or half a pound of silver while he was alive. She's been widowed for two years, and now she wants to get married. But as soon as her husband's family brings the dowry, no one will accept it. I don't need to describe her face; she's like a lion facing a fire, half-melted. As Zhang Sheng said, her shabby feet are worth a thousand taels of gold."
Wang Wendao said, "According to your words, it is excellent. I wonder what the karmic connection is?"
Zhou Quan said, "There is a matchmaker from my humble clan. I'll have her arrange a marriage for you another day."
The two ate for a while, and then it got late, so Zhou Quan said goodbye.
The next day, Wang Wen was at home making plans when a shop assistant and a female matchmaker arrived. Upon seeing Wang Wen, they took out a birth chart and handed it to him, saying, "Go and have your marriage checked. If it looks good, then you can get married."
Wang Wendao said, "The marriage was preordained in our previous lives, why should we continue? Take whatever amount of silver and betrothal gifts you have."
The matchmaker said, "Whether you choose a shop elsewhere or not, I'll be honest. I don't care about the dowry. If you have a few pieces of clothing, bring them over. If not, give me some silver, and I'll make some clothes for you. The matchmaker's money is not to be taken lightly."
Wang Wen looked at the calendar and said, "The eleventh is an auspicious day."
He took out six taels of silver and handed it to the shop assistant, saying, "Ten coins of silver are here. Please take them to the shop."
Zhou Quan took the silver and went with the matchmaker.
By the evening of the eleventh, Wang Wen was busy all day preparing for the wedding feast at his neighbors' homes. When the newlyweds arrived, they paid their respects to heaven and earth, and relatives, neighbors, and family members sat down for the meal.
The gathering didn't end until midnight. Several relatives were settled downstairs, while the newlyweds went upstairs to sleep.
Although Wang Wen was a common man, seeing such a beautiful woman, he was bound to be moved. But then he saw:
Her beauty is rare in this world, with bright, sparkling eyes and arched eyebrows.
She stood with her back to the lamp, too ashamed to speak, while the attendant unbuttoned the lamp and blew it out.
Wang Wen called out, "Wife, let's sleep together."
Yu Zhen did not answer, knowing that she could not escape it. She removed her crown and hairpin, took off her upper garment, blew out the lamp, and went to sleep in the quilt fully clothed.
Wang Wen hurriedly got into bed, touched Yu Zhen as she dressed, and laughed, "You'll have to take your clothes off eventually, why bother?"
He then went to remove her undergarments. Yu Zhen reluctantly complied, and was already naked. Wang Wen touched her body, finding it smooth and lovely. He reached out to explore her private parts, but Yu Zhen covered her hand and said, "Let's wait a day, until we're more familiar with her appearance before we take it."
Wang Wen laughed and said, "A sudden bout of convulsions has run into you, slow doctor."
He pushed her hands away and went up to her.
A widowed young woman,
A seasoned groom.
After a long period of hard work, it was like Wenjun's first encounter with Sima Xiangru.
One is a wife who has no mountain, and the other is a harmonious woman named Chen.
One of them, with a slanted gaze and panting heavily, moved like a willow shadow through a camp.
She was filled with lust, and her words were sweet and charming, like a butterfly playing in the shade of flowers.
The newlyweds whispered sweet nothings on the pillow, their love blossoming.
Every word they uttered in each other's ears was a vow of eternal love.
The couple were very happy and content. After about half a year, Wang Wen went on official business, and it would take him ten days or half a month to return. Even when he was at home, he was not as busy as he had been in the early days of their marriage.
Wang Wenyi was already middle-aged, and he wasn't very willing to put in the effort for that matter, so things were going poorly, and Yuzhen felt bored and uninterested.
Wang Wen was violent by nature, quite different from her ex-husband. When drunk, he would suddenly become unruly and start cursing Yu Zhen for no reason. If she tried to reason with him, he would throw punches and slaps, completely oblivious to the ways of the gentle embrace of love.
Therefore, Yuzhen thought of her ex-husband's good points and couldn't help but feel a little cold in her heart.
One day, Wang Wen went on a business trip with Zhou Quan again.
Yuzhen had no water to draw from. The well was outside the back door and was shared by five families. However, because her fingers were too slender to lift the bucket, she lost her grip and dropped the bucket and rope into the well. There was nothing she could do.
Unexpectedly, there was a playboy named Song Ren living in the back garden. He was the same age as Yu Zhen and lived a single life. He happened to come to the back garden and saw Yu Zhen wandering around with nowhere to go. He walked up to her and said, "Why is my lady looking into the well and pondering?"
Yu Zhen knew he was Song Ren and said, "Uncle Song, I accidentally dropped the bucket while drawing water and had no idea how to retrieve it, so I'm just pondering this."
Song Ren said, "Let me hook it up with you."
He rushed home, took a curved hook, tied it to a long pole, and scooped the fish out of the well. He and Yuzhen filled a bucket with water, and he went back to the well by the long pole.
Yu Zhen was extremely grateful to Song Ren. When she tried to fetch the bucket of water, she couldn't even lift it, let alone move it. Her face flushed red.
Song Ren went to the back door and saw Yu Zhen still standing there, with a bucket of water on the ground.
Song Ren said, "Looking at how delicate you are, how could you possibly lift it? Let me lift it for you."
Yu Zhen smiled and said, "How could I possibly trouble you?"
Song Ren said, "Neighbors live close by, sharing water and fire, so let's not talk about labor."
Song Ren poured the bucket of water into the vat with her, and in a short time, the vat was filled with water.
Yu Zhen thanked him profusely and said, "Uncle, please sit down. Let me brew you a cup of tea."
Song Ren said, "No need."
She left on her own. Yu Zhen thought to herself, "Such a good person, and so sensible. How can we, who are like wine lovers, who have no gentle nature at all, possibly spend a hundred years with him?"
Two days later, Song Ren, eager to seduce Yu Zhen, took his water containers, filled a bucket, knocked on the back door, and called out, "Wife, open the door, I've brought water."
Upon hearing this, Yu Zhen hurriedly opened the door. Her face beaming with smiles, she said, "It's rare for Uncle to be so thoughtful. How can I possibly repay you?"
He then asked, "Who else is in the household?"
Song Ren said, "My parents died when I was young, and I have no wife yet. Only my fortune teller is at home."
Yu Zhen asked, "Why hasn't Uncle taken a wife yet?"
Song Ren said, "I need to find someone I like so that I can die with her."
Yu Zhen said, "It's a lifelong matter if you can't find a wife."
Song Ren said, "Wang Wen has such a beautiful sister-in-law. I don't know what good deeds he did in his previous life to deserve this. It's just that Brother Wang treats his sister-in-law a little too well. It's just like the saying: 'A fine horse carries a villager on its journey, and a clever wife often sleeps with a clumsy husband.'"
Upon hearing this, Yu Zhen had no answer and hurriedly went to brew tea. Song Dan then filled a vat with water for him. Yu Zhen presented the tea and said, "Uncle, please have some tea."
Song Ren said, "Thank you, sister-in-law. How many days have passed since my brother left and he hasn't returned home yet?"
Yu Zhen said, "His whereabouts are uncertain; he may come today or in a few more days. We cannot know for sure."
Song Ren said, "The autumn wind is rising; sister-in-law, it's better to sleep alone to calm yourselves down."
Yu Zhen said, "He's not very affectionate at home either; it's much quieter when he's not at home."
As they were chatting, they heard a knock at the door. Song Ren thanked them for the tea and went out the back door. Yu Zhen put down her teacup and went out to see what was going on. It was a local official from the same county asking if Wang Wen had returned. Yu Zhen went to report back.
From then on, both of them kept their eyes peeled. One day, as evening approached, Song Ren went to the back gate of the Wang family's house and saw Yu Zhen cooking dinner. He asked, "Sister-in-law, would you like some water?"
Yu Zhen said, "I brought some buckets here this afternoon. Thank you, Uncle."
Song Ren said, "I was away on official business in the countryside these past few days and just got back. I was thinking of my sister-in-law, so I came to inquire after her. Has my brother returned yet?"
Yu Zhen said, "I've only been back for two days, and this afternoon I was sent to Xianju Township to fetch people again."
Song Ren said, "I see."
Just as I was about to turn back, I heard a sudden downpour, like stones hitting the ground. It was so slippery that I couldn't help but fall.
The remaining 150 taels of silver were given to Wang Wendao: "Although I shouldn't have abandoned you as your wife, I'll give you the silver I made today so you can marry a better wife and live a longer life with her. She'll be more patient. If you hadn't committed that crime, how could I have abandoned you?"
He removed the gold and silver rings from his hands and gave all his jewelry to Wang Wen.
He had a few taels of silver left beside him, and looking at Zhou Quan, he said, "I would like to trouble Uncle Zhou to find a quiet nunnery for me to use as a vegetarian meal, so that I can have a better life."
Seeing his wife's deep affection, Wang Wen couldn't bear to part with her and burst into tears. Yu Zhen also started to cry.
Even Zhou Quan shed tears and said, "Since you two are in such a state, I can't bear to look at you. Why don't you take some silver to another prefecture or county and do some business? That should be enough to make a living. I'll sell the house for you. It will give you three hundred taels of silver, but I'm afraid you won't be able to do any business. Even small copper coins are worthless. If you leave this place, who will come to harass you?"
Wang Wen said, "That's very good. I just ask that you keep it in mind, elder brother."
Zhou Quan replied, "Naturally, it resides in the heart."
Wang Wen quickly bought wine and food, offered sacrifices to the family ancestral spirits, and invited Zhou Quan to drink with him. The couple rekindled their love. This was also a debt of infidelity that Yu Zhen owed to these people, which Song Ren repaid, restoring their marital harmony.
Later, Zhou Quan exchanged the silver and opened a woodworking shop with Wang Wen in the south of the city. The couple earned a considerable fortune and had three sons.
Once Wang Wen left the yamen, he became more disciplined with his drinking and never stopped. Therefore, he didn't indulge in either wine or women. Yang Lu, on the other hand, was beaten to death by the magistrate. Later generations wrote down the names of several of them, which coincidentally led to the following:
Because Wang Wen was not cultured, Yu Zhen was not chaste.
The wicked Yang Lu did not die, and the benevolent Song Ren was not benevolent.
With thorough preparation, and with complete thoroughness, the wonderful task was accomplished!
Overall rating:
The scholar mistook Zhangtai Liu for a real woman; little did he know that his deception would become the truth.
Yu Zhen owes a debt of romantic entanglements, yet she enjoys the springtime of West Lake.
