Shocking Change (

Word Count: 3500)

I. An Unexpected Calamity
On the outskirts of a bustling city, an industrial park stood, rows of neat factory buildings towering within. The surrounding rural areas had mostly been demolished; this was the ideal location for urban expansion, with a highway running north-south, making transportation convenient.

Xiao Jian was a migrant worker from afar, a robust 24-year-old young man who had been working there for two years, earning about 3,000 yuan a month. For someone from a remote rural area, this was quite a lot, and he was content. Xiao Jian was strong, energetic, and hardworking; everyone liked him.

To save money, Xiao Jian rented a bungalow in a rural area three kilometers from the factory. He commuted by bicycle every day. The factory provided lunch; he ate whatever was convenient for breakfast; and he usually ate noodles for dinner—saving money and being economical.
Xiao Jian had no bad habits; his only hobby was fishing. Every Saturday, he would quickly eat something, grab his fishing rod and a leftover steamed bun, and ride his bicycle to a culvert along the highway to fish. The culvert connected farmland on both sides of the highway, but the farmland was abandoned, only covered with reeds and weeds.

The ditch was less than a meter deep and less than three meters wide, but it teemed with crucian carp, and occasionally even carp weighing over a pound. Because of its remoteness, only Xiao Jian knew about it.

Today was strange; almost a whole day had passed, and he had only caught three small crucian carp. Xiao Jian felt a little annoyed. He stood up, looked around, and considered going home, but then felt a little reluctant. He thought, "I'll wait a little longer. I have nothing to do at home anyway, and I don't have to work tomorrow, it's Sunday." Sitting on the small folding chair the

landlord had given him, watching the fishing float on the water, Xiao Jian unconsciously thought of his parents back home. Two days ago, his father had gone to visit relatives in town and called him to tell him everything was fine. His aunt had introduced him to a girl from a village behind the mountain, a handsome 21-year-old. Her parents had already agreed to meet her during the Spring Festival. Xiao Jian was overjoyed; although he hadn't met her, he was filled with anticipation. Lost in thought,

Xiao Jian felt a sudden weight on his hand and snapped back to reality. The float had already sunk into the water, and the taut fishing line had bent the rod in his hand. A surge of excitement filled him. "What kind of fish is this? It's so strong!" he thought, gripping the rod with tense anticipation as he reeled in the fish. After more than ten minutes, a tired, large fish was brought to the edge of the ditch. Xiao Jian was surprised to find it was a large carp, probably weighing about three pounds. He had never caught such a big fish before.

Xiao Jian nervously approached slowly, gripping the fishing rod tightly with one hand and reaching for the big fish with the other. He suddenly pressed down on the fish's head, and the fish struggled fiercely, soaking Xiao Jian completely before he finally managed to pull it

ashore. He happily placed it in his fish basket, excitedly wiping the sweat from his face. He took off his work clothes and draped them over the reeds nearby. He caught seven or eight more fish in a row, some big, some small, but the largest was only about half a pound. Xiao Jian was still very happy. It was getting dark, and the annoying mosquitoes started biting. Satisfied, Xiao Jian packed up his fishing rod, lifted the heavy fish basket, and was beaming with delight.

Suddenly, something flew from the highway and hit Xiao Jian squarely on the back, almost knocking him into the water. The pain made Xiao Jian yell, "Who the hell is blind?" There was no response. Xiao Jian quickly climbed up the culvert, watching the cars speeding past on the highway. Annoyed, he returned to the ditch and picked up the object that had hit him.

It was a woman's handbag, small and exquisite. Xiao Jian opened it with suspicion, his heart pounding. There was at least 20,000 yuan inside. He nervously looked around, then, without thinking, grabbed his fishing rod and basket, quickly jumped on his bicycle, and sped along the country road. He even forgot his work clothes.

He rushed home, threw the bag under the bed, took the fish to his landlord, exchanged a few words with him, went back to his room, closed the door, locked it from the inside, nervously and excitedly took out the bag, then cautiously drew the curtains. Trembling, he pulled out the money, carefully counting it several times. Good heavens, 23,200 yuan! That was a year's worth of his earnings! Overjoyed and excited, Xiao Jian was restless.

Suddenly, he realized, this wasn't his money; he should return it. That wouldn't be ethical. But then he thought, "
I didn't steal or rob it; it flew off the highway. Why should I return it?" His thoughts were in turmoil, filled with anxiety. Finally, he made up his mind to leave the money for a month. If someone came looking for it, he would return it; if no one came looking for it, he would consider himself lucky, and the person who lost the money would just have to accept their bad luck.

He counted the money again and put it back in his bag. Only then did he realize that there were other things inside. He took them out and saw a CD, a USB drive, a lipstick, and some kind of VIP card. Xiao Jian didn't see it clearly and casually tossed it on the bed. He was still uneasy. Where should he put the bag? Finally, he remembered that his neighbors had all moved to the city and were just waiting for their house to be demolished. He carefully went out of his house, checked that no one was on the street, quickly jumped over the collapsed wall of his neighbor's yard, entered through the window, and hid the bag in an abandoned cabinet.

Xiao Jian breathed a sigh of relief, went home, lay on his bed, and casually stuffed the CD under his pillow and the USB drive into his pocket. He was so nervous and excited that he barely slept all night.

The next day, I woke up and realized I'd forgotten my work clothes and folding chair. I shook my head, ate something quickly,
and rode my bicycle just out of the village when the factory called, saying someone was looking for me and I needed to come immediately. A wave of anxiety washed over me. Had I been discovered? Impossible! Who could it be? I didn't know anyone here. Puzzled, I turned towards the factory.

Just as I reached the factory gate, the security guard on duty pointed to a black sedan parked not far away and said, "Xiao Jian, the person in that car is looking for you." I walked over, puzzled. A man got out of the car, smiling and gesturing to me.

Xiao Jian approached the man, who politely said, "Come on, get in the car, I'll take you to see your relative."
I was bewildered and said, "I don't have any relatives here, you've mistaken me for someone else."

The man leaned closer and said, "You'll see once you get in." He opened the car door, and before I could react, he shoved me into the car. Another man inside grabbed my collar, a sharp dagger pressed against my chest: "Don't make a sound, or I'll stab you to death."

The sudden turn of events left me stunned and terrified. I sat obediently between the two men, not daring to utter a sound. The car started moving forward, and the driver even thanked the security guard.

The car drove out of the industrial park and stopped in a secluded spot. Panicked, I noticed a woman sitting in the front passenger seat. She coldly held up a work uniform and said, "This is yours, isn't it? Your name tag has your photo on it. Did you find a bag in the ditch by the highway yesterday?"

I was puzzled. Although scared, I had calmed down considerably and replied, "Yes, is it yours? Can you prove it's yours?" Before I could finish speaking, the man on my left suddenly elbowed me hard in the chin. My head spun, and I screamed in terror, "Why are you hitting me? If it's yours, I'll give it back!"

The two men in the car hit me several more times. Xiao Jian was dazed and confused. The woman coldly said, "That's enough. If you kill us, we won't be able to explain ourselves. Where's the bag? Take us to get it, or we'll kill you."

With no other choice, I fearfully pointed the way home, feeling incredibly wronged and resentful. I found it, I didn't steal it! Why were they hitting me? Even worse, they threw away my phone.

Upon arriving at the door, the woman coldly said, "Take them to get it. I don't want any tricks."
Xiao Jian was led out of the car, jumped over the wall, entered the house through the window, took out the bag, and handed it to the man beside him. "Here it is. Here you go. I didn't touch a single penny."

The man ran out excitedly, holding up the bag and saying, "Sister Ying, here it is!" The woman reached out, took the bag from the car window, and quickly opened and rummaged through it. "The stuff isn't there. Grab him!"

The man turned and pulled out a dagger. Startled, Xiao Jian didn't hesitate. He leaped out of the back window, which had no glass, and ran. Xiao Jian was very familiar with this place. Half of the villagers had moved away. The village was empty. Xiao Jian ran desperately, dodging left and right, and finally hid in an abandoned house, lying under a broken bed, not daring to breathe.

Finally, they hadn't discovered him. Xiao Jian was terrified; he had never experienced anything like this before. He felt wronged,
confused, and utterly bewildered. Slowly, he began to understand. Yes, there were still CDs at home, and a USB drive in his pocket that he hadn't given them. He had forgotten about it in the midst of the beating and the fear. But they couldn't kill him! What kind of people were they? He should call the police. Damn it, his phone was gone too! Sigh! He'd better wait until later before going out.

It was already dark when Xiao Jian carefully crawled out. After observing carefully for a while and finding nothing unusual, he quietly made his way back home.

Xiao Jian had just entered his home in the dark when someone suddenly pushed him to the ground. His instinctive reaction was to twist and kick him. A muffled groan escaped as one person was kicked to the ground. Just as he was about to get up, another figure flashed forward, stepping on Xiao Jian's chest and twisting his hand. A cold gun barrel was pointed at Xiao Jian's head. A woman's voice said coldly, "Don't move, police. If you move, I'll kill you."

The lights came on, and Xiao Jian saw that the person twisting his arm was a young and beautiful woman, probably under thirty. A young man got up from the ground, clutching his stomach. Another middle-aged man, holding a gun and handcuffs, handcuffed Xiao Jian's hands, saying, "Section Chief Wu, are you alright?"

The young woman, addressed as Section Chief Wu, released me and said, "I'm fine. Xiao Wang got kicked by him. How's Xiao Wang?"

Xiao Wang angrily said, "I'm fine. That kid's pretty strong. Behave yourself."

I quickly argued, "..." "Officers, are you really officers? I haven't broken the law! Someone tried to kill me today, what right do you have to arrest me?"

Chief Wu looked at me for a while, then his tone softened considerably. "Don't be nervous, we're investigating a case. Where were you last night? This folding chair is yours, isn't it? What did you see? Tell us the truth. We won't wrong an innocent person, nor will we let a bad person go free."

Xiao Jian honestly recounted everything. Chief Wu asked nervously, "Where are the CD and USB drive?"

I told him the CD was under my pillow, and the USB drive was in my pocket. The USB drive had been taken out, but the CD was gone. Chief Wu said nervously, "They got it first."

The atmosphere was tense and heavy. Xiao Jian whispered, "I've told you everything, please let me go, I haven't broken the law."
Chief Wu said apologetically, "I'm sorry, I've wronged you." He then unlocked Xiao Jian's handcuffs. He then said, "Thank you for the tip. Please keep in touch."

He wrote down a phone number, handed it to me, and was about to leave when Xiao Jian nervously said, "What if they come back after you leave?" Section Chief Wu hesitated.

Just then, the landlord arrived and said to me, "You'd better leave quickly. Goodness, two thugs came this morning, and then the police this afternoon. We can't afford to mess with either of them. I'll forgo the rent, but you should leave now."

This put Xiao Jian in a difficult position. He looked helplessly at Section Chief Wu, who said, "It's indeed not safe for him to stay here. Why don't you come with us?"
