Chapter Ten of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In July of the year 540 of the Fast calendar, as various continental nations successively joined the war, the situation of the confrontation between the two major camps became increasingly clear.

Fast, England, Ludian, and Yunyang formed one camp. Apart from Fast countering the invasions of various nations on all sides, the other nations launched attacks on Wu'an, Yasu, and Pari from the rear. Meanwhile, Wu'an, Yasu, Pari, and Chuyue formed another camp. Not only did they continue their efforts to annex Fast, but internal strife also brewed within their own borders, with some alarming signs emerging.

The Anglo-Western Empire launched a multi-pronged attack on Wu'an and Yasu, sweeping through the region for some time. Unable to secure reinforcements, Wu'an and Yasu were forced to conscript new soldiers to bolster their forces. However, how could these newly recruited soldiers possibly compete with the well-trained Anglo-Western regular army? Moreover, the Anglo-Western commander-in-chief was General Han Xinqian, known as the "God of War of the Western Continent." Under his almost artistic command, the army had already captured three prefectures in Wu'an and four border cities in Yasu, their momentum unstoppable.

Meanwhile, the Ludian army had already conquered a third of Pali's territory. With three armies advancing simultaneously, their spearhead aimed directly at Pali's capital, they seemed poised for annihilation.

Under these circumstances, various sentiments arose within the three kingdoms. Most were criticism and dissatisfaction with the overseas campaigns, as the current situation was no longer something the national governments could conceal. The people saw only the retaliation inflicted by their own country's invasion, and the looming threat of national annihilation. They could only vent their anger on the government.

Of the three kingdoms, Pari reacted most vehemently, as the people of Pari felt the threat of the Rudian army most acutely. Those in the occupied territories knew best the suffering there, and how could those in the unconquered areas feel at ease? Amidst this chaotic situation, and with the added fuel to the fire, the people blamed the government for everything, and in some places, even voices of rebellion arose.

If the Pari government had a legitimate pretext to mobilize the people to resist the invasion when Rudian launched a major offensive, then when the Phoenix Dance Legion and the Red Rider Legion drove the Pari army out of Fast territory and crossed the Pari border under the banner of self-defense, they were truly speechless before the people.

Back then, it was you, Parry, who invaded Fast first. Now that they're retaliating in self-defense, what can you say? However, for the people of Parry, not only were they facing increasingly fierce attacks from Rudin in the east, but now they were also suffering a counterattack from Fast's army in the south. The resulting fear and discontent with the government reached its peak.

On July 5th, a major town in northern Parry staged a coup, declaring its intention to secede from Parry's rule and declare independence. They sent envoys to Rudin and Fast to inform them of this situation and request the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Of course, Fast and Rudin were happy to agree. Leaving aside how to deal with them in the future, the impact this would have on the already tense situation in Parry was considerable for both countries. To ensure this rare spectacle went well, Fast and Rudin tacitly announced to the mainland that they would not only establish diplomatic relations with the major town in northern Parry but also provide it with aid, thereby enhancing their visibility and legitimacy on the mainland!

Thus, the Parry government was forced to swallow its anger. Although it issued a strong protest and refused to recognize the town's independence, it was unable to spare a single soldier to suppress the forces attacked by the armies of Fast and Rudin.

Seeing the government's crumbling regime, uprisings broke out across Parry. Some declared independence by establishing their own territories, some fought to overthrow the incompetent government and reclaim their lands, and others simply surrendered to the armies of Fast and Rudin. In short, Parry was riddled with problems, and the royal regime that had ruled Parry for hundreds of years was on the verge of collapse. The entire nation was filled with fear and unease!

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Shi Xuguang of the Phoenix Dance Legion and Qing Ji of the Red Cavalry Legion launched a major offensive into the heart of Parry.

However, in stark contrast to the Rudin army's conquests, they maintained strict military discipline in each location they conquered. They not only spared the local population who had not fled but also provided them with logistical supplies to facilitate the rapid restoration of production. For those who surrendered and were taken prisoner, as long as they did not have a clear political stance, they were all allowed to leave freely. Therefore, although the places the Fast army went to still bore the marks of war, there was no resentment, and they even received tacit praise from many people, thus gaining their trust.

The Ludin army, however, was not so courteous. They generally adopted a lenient military policy when conquering cities. In other words, as long as it wasn't a massacre or looting, it was all done with the tacit approval of their commanders. Therefore, although they conquered a third of Parry's territory, the impression of the people in the areas occupied by the Ludin army was vastly different from that of the people in the areas occupied by the Fast army.

This was precisely what Ye Tianguang and the beautiful ladies of the cabinet stationed in Esnia had always emphasized: to conquer the world, it was impossible without the hearts of the people.

Since Ye Tianlong ascended the Fast throne and developed the determination to rule the world, they had been particularly strict in managing the army.

An army represents its governing philosophy. If it cannot gain the trust of the people in these matters, what reason would the masses have to choose such a ruler to serve their interests?

Yes, an army must not be lenient towards its enemies. War has its own laws, but it is essential to remember the purpose of war and the reason for fighting. If someone with ambitions to rule the world doesn't understand this, they cannot achieve hegemony. The lessons of history have clearly illustrated this point, yet some people disdain or disregard it, and when they fail, they may not even know where they went wrong.

Among the three kingdoms, the one with the least chaos was Aso. This is undoubtedly related to the fact that their entire nation is composed of orcs. They possess social relationships that ordinary human societies lack. It can be said that, in their eyes, although Wu'an and Parri seem to be united with them in invading Fast, in the hearts of the orcs, all humans are their enemies. If they have any closest and most loyal allies, it is the demons living in the Demon Realm.

Therefore, despite Aso's setbacks in the war against Fast, there were few voices within the country opposing King Let of the Lion. Instead, some other beastmen awaited an opportunity, hoping to gradually weaken the Lion Clan's power through Fast, giving them a chance to rise to prominence. The Wolf Clan and Leopard Clan were two such factions.

The Bear Clan, though fierce, lacked wisdom and ambition, and had been completely subdued by King Let of the Lion. Including the previous war against the Heavenly Wind and this invasion of Fast, Aso's army was composed entirely of the Lion and Bear Clan, while the Leopard and Wolf Clan remained at their base to deal with any potential crises. They thought they had nothing to do, but their time at their base was short when the Anglo-Western invasion occurred, and the two clans were conveniently sent to fill the gap. Currently, they are still in a stalemate with the Anglo-Western army, and the country is poorly populated and lacking in resources, making major unrest unlikely.

However, beneath this seemingly calm surface, an undercurrent of crisis is quietly unfolding. The powerful figures currently preoccupied with vying for supremacy have yet to realize the shock they will face when that day suddenly arrives.

Amidst the chaos of the Three Kingdoms, the most complex situation is that of Wu'an.

Currently, the person controlling the entire political situation in Wu'an is the Seventh Princess, Tang Juan, who once visited Fast. This woman possesses immense ambition; all her machinations are solely for the purpose of one day ruling the world and ascending to the pinnacle of power on the Fengyue Continent. Despite the current highly unstable situation within her own country, she still displays an air of nonchalance, as if everything is under her control.

In fact, she was the one who orchestrated the war against Fast. Now, the Wu'an army is mired in the quagmire of the war against Fast and is also facing attacks from the British Empire from the rear. However, looking at the country, they cannot muster a single soldier to resist the British Empire's offensive. Wu'an's current predicament has drawn widespread criticism from its older generation of ministers.

However, precisely because of her ruthless methods, the ministers dare not discuss the topic. Even with their deep dissatisfaction, they remain indignant in their hearts. Who can guarantee that someone who speaks ill of her will suffer a bad end?

But as the saying goes, public opinion is powerful; no matter how shrewd Tang Juan is, she cannot silence the people. Therefore, discussions about the government and her, the de facto ruler, are particularly heated among the people. Not only are there tireless individuals stirring things up, but even some disgruntled ministers have joined in. Perhaps they believe that if they can use public pressure to force Tang Juan to relinquish power, Wu'an might still be saved. After all, Pari's current situation is already clear to the world. If no measures are taken, Wu'an will likely become the next Pari.

However, it's not just these problems that trouble Wu'an; an even greater threat is the deeply ingrained power of faith within the hearts of the people. Through the Wind Temple's cultivation in Wu'an over the years, the power of the gods has far exceeded people's imagination. What role they are playing in this chaos is a question that Wu'an should deeply consider.

Perhaps the gods are waiting for an upcoming opportunity, an opportunity to completely change the fate of Wu'an, and even the fate of the entire continent. They have been planning for a thousand years, and now that the continent is in turmoil again, it is the scene they most desire.

That night, in the Puvasha Royal Palace in Wu'an's capital, a seemingly pure and noble woman appeared outside the Wu'an King's bedchamber.

"Who?" A man's voice, filled with surprise and fear, came from within, sounding so weak.

"My king, it is I!" the woman said in a seductive voice, so alluring it could melt one's bones.

With that, she ascended the jade steps and entered the Wu'an King's inner chamber.

When the woman's face was fully revealed to King Wu'an, his expression was that of a devout believer seeing a goddess.

His hair was disheveled, and he leaned against the brocade couch, his frail body lacking any trace of royal authority. His sickly appearance was reminiscent of people during a great famine—sunken eyes, sallow complexion, what a pathetic King Wu'an!

"Who are you? How did you get in?" After a moment of shock, King Wu'an looked at the woman warily.

"Hehe, my king, you don't care who I am or where I come from. You only need to know that I've come to help you solve your difficulties." The woman giggled, speaking to King Wu'an with extreme allure. Her tone was soft, yet it carried an undeniable firmness that was irresistible.

"What can you help me with? What difficulties do I need you to solve?" King Wu'an said weakly, his eyes no longer daring to look at the woman who seemed to radiate light.

"Heh, no problem at all. Why are you, my king, confined to the deep palace, reduced to this state?" The woman made no attempt to conceal the fact that she was facing the ruler of a nation, her words filled with provocation and mockery towards this pitiful man. Perhaps, this was precisely the purpose she intended to achieve!

"Who exactly are you? What do you want? If you don't explain yourself, I'll call for help." King Wu'an was indeed weak and incompetent; his words alone revealed his insecurity. What confident and self-assured monarch would speak in such a tone?

"Do you still want to live like this? Does Dong Ganzheng think that living under the manipulation of a woman has any dignity? Are you King Wu'an, or your sister? If you have no heart for this country, why don't you hand over the throne to her? Since you've taken this position, what have you accomplished? Do you know how many people live in Wu'an? Do you know how the people live?" The woman's gaze suddenly sharpened, and she approached King Wu'an step by step, bombarding him with a long string of questions.

Hearing the woman's harsh question and seeing her aggressive demeanor, King Wu'an shrank back behind the bed like a chick before a hawk, his fear as palpable as that of a terminally ill man.

"Answer me!" the woman demanded, her beautiful eyes blazing with anger.

After a long pause, King Wu'an stammered, "I...I...she is my own sister!"

"Then rightfully pass the throne to her!" the woman roared, her eyes filled with disappointment.

"But...but according to ancestral rules, there is no precedent for a woman to ascend the throne; it would make the whole nation laugh." King Wu'an seemed to have calmed down slightly, managing to finish a sentence, at least somewhat clearly expressing his meaning.

"Do you think the people won't laugh then? Go outside this palace and listen. Do these high walls really block your courage as a man and a king?" The woman's tone remained accusatory; her face was now almost touching King Wu'an's, her piercing eyes radiating a menacing light.

“What can I do? She handles state affairs very well, and the ministers all respect her.” King Wu’an seemed somewhat swayed. Even the most spineless man couldn’t be without masculine ambition. The woman’s provocation earlier had indeed shaken him.

“Do you want to truly gain royal power and bring benefits to the people of Wu’an?” The woman’s tone softened, changing from an interrogative one.

“I…” King Wu’an hesitated, then, seeing the woman’s sharp gaze, immediately said, “I am willing, but how can I truly gain royal power? She currently controls the entire court; it’s probably not so easy to achieve.”

“My king, as long as you make up your mind, you can leave the specifics to us.” The woman smiled alluringly again, speaking softly.

“Then what do you want to do?” King Wu’an stammered.

“Political struggles are cruel. As long as Your Majesty makes up your mind, we will help you do what you cannot bear to do. The greatest enemy facing Your Majesty right now is none other than your own sister, the Seventh Princess. Once she disappears from this world, who else can threaten your throne?” The woman smiled sweetly, casually outlining an assassination plan, revealing how carefree she was in matters of killing.

“You want to kill her? But she is a mother now. Isn’t that a bit cruel?” King Wu’an’s eyes widened, then he hesitated.

“A child? Just a demonic seed. Keeping him in this world will only bring disaster. It’s better to nip it in the bud, lest it become a scourge that harms humanity!” The woman’s teeth clenched as she spoke, showing her extreme hatred for this so-called demonic seed.

“Then so be it. Can you tell me who you really are?” King Wu’an finally relented and turned to ask the woman.

"Hehe, who I am is unimportant. When you truly ascend the throne of Wu'an in the near future, you will naturally know who I am and understand our purpose in helping you. Now, my king, you should take good care of your health and prepare for your future reign!" The woman covered her face and chuckled, gently patting Wu'an King's shoulder. She spoke meaningfully, but a profound and imperceptible light flickered in her eyes, filled with murderous intent!

"Alright, I won't ask anymore. Do as you wish!" Wu'an King, unable to ascertain the identity of the newcomer, had no choice but to give up. From this perspective, he also lacked persistence. Such a puppet sitting on the throne, besides being somewhat pitiful, was indeed hateful.

"Very well, my king, await our good news. I take my leave." Having achieved her goal, the woman lingered, gracefully bowing before tiptoeing out of King Wu'an's palace.

"Alas..." A lonely sorrow flickered across King Wu'an's face. His hand rose halfway before falling heavily to his sides.

The moonlight was intense, and a deep sigh echoed through the cold palace. Who could know what sins would unfold tonight under such bright moonlight?
