The Tale of the Imprisoned Consort - Chapter 167, The Person Has Returned (Part 1)

On this first night, Emperor Xuli did not give Mingruo any chance to speak. After Eunuch An left, he held her and slept with her, not allowing her to speak. When Mingruo tried to speak, he would look at her with a cold and indifferent gaze. No matter how much she struggled, she could only swallow the words she wanted to say back down.
Mingruo had never liked going out, only occasionally visiting the Imperial Garden to admire the flowers. She spent most of her time in Panlong Palace or the Imperial Study. But for the past two weeks, Emperor Xuli had been very busy, and aside from forbidding her from refusing to see him when he sought her, he had hardly restricted her movements. Yet, even with this freedom, Mingruo didn't know where to go.
She was seven months pregnant, her belly unusually large. The imperial physician said it was because the fetus was too robust. Ironically, since entering her seventh month, she had begun to lose weight rapidly. Such a large belly paired with such a small body was truly worrying. Emperor Xu Li was even more anxious, forbidding her to be alone. If he couldn't see her for even a quarter of an hour, he would frantically search for her. Ming Ruo knew her body was struggling to cope, but she didn't know if it was because the baby was too healthy or because she was worried about Duanmu Yun.
It has been more than half a month, and Duanmu Yun has still not returned.
She dared not imagine how he would be treated upon his return. Two consecutive defeats, with the loss of nearly a million soldiers. According to custom, he should be executed! Even if Emperor Xuli did not punish him, the civil and military officials in the court would still discuss it, not to mention... the common people had always had unwavering faith in the God of War, Duanmu Yun. His two consecutive defeats would be a sharp blow to their morale!
"Ah—"
Hearing her cry of pain, Emperor Xuli immediately looked up from his desk piled high with memorials, and in the next second, he was standing in front of her. His long, slender hand took her small hand, and looking at the delicate white fingertips from which beads of blood occasionally oozed, his long eyebrows furrowed: "How could you be so careless, lost in thought again?" As he spoke, he placed the needle and thread in Mingruo's hand into a basket to the side, and with his thin lips slightly parted, he took her fingertips into his mouth.
His warm lips and tongue sucked away all the blood beads. Mingruo obediently let him treat her wounds. Seeing the most noble man in the world kneeling in front of her like this, her heart softened, and all the anxiety of the past few days disappeared.
"It's alright, Father. It was just an accidental prick."
“If there’s one, there will be two.” Emperor Xuli glanced at her indifferently, stood up, and took the basket away.
"You're not allowed to embroider anymore."
"Huh?" Mingruo was stunned for a moment, then immediately reacted: "No!" She had only finished embroidering half of that little shoe! "Father, give it back to me!" She stood up, her large belly making Emperor Xuli's heart tremble with fear. He dared not dodge, but he could only raise his hand with one hand, and the little dwarf could not jump over it. He could only puff out his cheeks in anger: "Father—"
"Stop embroidering, we'll talk about it tomorrow." The baby isn't due for another two or three months, and the little thing is doing fine. At first, he didn't mind her embroidering little shoes, bibs, and purses, but as the days go by, she's become more and more obsessed with needlework. What's going on? Even if it's for the baby, she can't just completely ignore him like this! But seeing Mingruo's tearful appearance, he softened: "Alright, alright, don't cry... When you cry, your father's heart breaks."
She looked at him with her big, watery eyes: "Then Father, give me back my things."
"No." He still refused firmly, then his voice was as soft as water: "Ruo'er, be good, eat something and rest for a while. Father will give it back to you when you wake up." As he spoke, he took her little hand, led her to the desk, kissed her cheek, put a piece of plum blossom cake in her hand, and poured her a cup of tea.
Mingruo obediently took a bite. The fragrant, soft texture was different from ordinary plum blossom cakes; this one had a much stronger sour taste than sweet, which suited her palate perfectly. She sat on the dragon throne reserved for the emperor, watching him bustle about for her sake, doing everything himself. After taking a sip of tea from Emperor Xuli's hand, Mingruo was lifted up and placed on his lap. He then sat down and continued reading the memorials. After a while, Mingruo felt uneasy. Looking at Emperor Xuli's impassive face, she asked, "Father, don't you think Ruor'er is heavy?"
Upon hearing this, he curled his lips into a smile: "Of course it's heavy."
Even though she asked that question... he didn't have to be so obvious! Mingru pouted, unhappy.
Emperor Xuli looked at her puffed-up little face, reached out and touched her belly, and said softly, "The whole world is on your body, how can it not be heavy?" He gently stroked her slightly pale face with his large hand, feeling heartbroken, but he didn't say anything.
"Your body needs proper care. You shouldn't do needlework anymore; it's draining your energy." He noticed she needed to rest every now and then, and although he didn't say anything, he knew. With her due date approaching, she needed to be even more careful.
She rubbed her cheek against his large hand. Mingruo knew he was doing it for her own good, and besides, she was aware of her own health, so she nodded and said, "Okay."
"Good girl." Emperor Xu Li kissed her again, pressed her little face against his chest, and untied his dragon robe to wrap her up: "Sleep for a while first, then Father will take you out for a walk later."
"Okay." She obediently agreed.
Emperor Xu Li was very satisfied and kissed her several times before letting her go.
Mingruo slept for about half an hour. Her body felt heavy, so Emperor Xuli changed her position every now and then to prevent her from feeling sore upon waking. Since arriving at the imperial study, Emperor Xuli had been reading memorials, and even now that Mingruo was awake, he was still reading. His purple phoenix eyes seemed casual, yet gleamed with a sharp light, as if nothing in the world could escape his gaze. Warm sunlight streamed into the hall. Mingruo leaned against Emperor Xuli's chest, her small hand reaching for her eyes, about to rub them, when he swiftly grabbed it, saying, "Don't rub." He then took a damp cloth that had been prepared beforehand and wiped her face, focusing on massaging her eye sockets. Mingruo murmured contentedly, her small hands clutching Emperor Xuli's robes. Seeing her cat-like affection, his heart softened and sweetened. He kissed her before softly asking, "Are you hungry?"
All they do is ask her if she's hungry or tired; they really treat her like a pig. Mingruo quickly shook her head: "No."
"Really not?"
She nodded firmly, "No." Her gaze fell on the barely perceptible weariness in his eyes, and she placed her small hand over his eye sockets, her voice low and filled with heartache.
"Father...you are tired."
Emperor Xuli chuckled, took her small hand that she had placed over his eyes, and kissed it: "Would Ruo'er like to rest with Father for a while? Some flowers have bloomed in the Imperial Garden, and Ruo'er will surely be delighted to see them."
"Okay." She obediently nestled into his arms, and he led her down to the ground. To match Mingruo's pace, Emperor Xuli walked extremely slowly. The short journey from the Imperial Study to the Imperial Garden took them more than half an hour. If Mingruo hadn't refused, Emperor Xuli would have wanted to take her there in the imperial carriage. By the time they arrived, Mingruo was panting heavily, unable to even speak, which amused and exasperated Emperor Xuli.
"I told you you could come by imperial carriage, but the little one was so stubborn and insisted on walking." Are you tired now?
Breathing heavily in his arms, Mingruo took a deep breath, drank a sip of the tea he offered, and said haltingly, "It's been so long since I've walked..."
"You don't have to walk this far at once." He gently brushed her sweat-dampened hair from her temples with his large hand and sighed softly. He could never do anything about her requests.
"Look at you, you're exhausted."
Mingruo puffed out her cheeks, buried her face in his chest, and kept acting coquettishly: "But Ruo'er is very happy."
Emperor Xu Li paused, remaining silent for a long while, but his hand stroking her hair became even gentler.
