The Captive Consort's Tale - Chapter 24: Acknowledged

Outside the main hall of the general's mansion, all the servants stood ramrod straight, their eyes fixed straight ahead. Each of them stood there as upright as a stake, not daring to utter a sound. A few of the more timid ones had their legs trembling.
Mingruo also hid behind a pillar outside the door, feeling extremely embarrassed. She held a tea tray in her hand, wanting to go in but not daring to. Her small feet, clad in delicate embroidered shoes, scratched on the ground, unable to muster the courage.
Suddenly, a pair of large hands reached out from behind her, one taking her tea tray and the other pinching her small face. The man's deep, magnetic voice, tinged with amusement, drifted over: "What are you doing hiding here? The Emperor is waiting for his tea!"
Mingruo turned her head away angrily, avoiding Duanmu Yun's restless large hand, her little mouth pouting high: "I know, but, but I'm too scared to go in!"
"Why don't you dare go in?" Duanmu Yun pinched her cheek again with quick reflexes and chuckled in a low voice, "Isn't that Ruo'er's father?"
"That's true... but... but I really don't dare to go in!" Mingruo was very distressed. She grabbed Duanmu Yun's large hand that was squeezing her and shook it. "He just sits there, looking so lazy. I'm so scared! You know, I've always been terrified of Father Emperor." Her face was scrunched up like a bun, and she looked genuinely distressed. It's not her fault, is it? She wasn't one of those foolish concubines and palace maids in the harem who were only infatuated with her father's handsome appearance or his immense power. She was his daughter; how could she not see the cold, wicked aura emanating from him? Although he always looked so lazy, his imposing presence was impossible to hide.
Duanmu Yun found it amusing, took her small hand in his, kissed it, and said with a gentle smile, "I think not." Seeing Mingruo raise her face in surprise, he smiled even more tenderly at her, "Although the Emperor's temperament is unpredictable, my wife can definitely tame him. Ruo'er may not say it, but she still longs for a father-daughter relationship, doesn't she? I've seen Ruo'er call her mother-in-law 'Mother,' so I imagine what she desires most is a carefree and unrestrained rural life." (The Emperor) "He's the Emperor, so naturally I can't lower myself and abandon the throne, but the bond between father and daughter is innate. Ruo'er, just follow your heart; nothing else matters." Seeing her slightly startled face, he couldn't help but lean in and kiss her again. "However, our life as husband and wife is already very fulfilling. I may say nice things, but deep down I don't want Ruo'er to get close to the Emperor, even though he's my father-in-law." He then raised an eyebrow at Mingruo and made a face, instantly making Mingruo burst into laughter.
"Alright, I understand." With that, she took the tray back from her husband and, taking advantage of the moment, tiptoed to plant a light kiss on his handsome face, whispering, "I really did marry a good husband." After saying that, her jade-like cheeks suddenly flushed red, and she turned away, too shy to look at him, and immediately walked towards the hall.
Duanmu Yun paused for a moment behind her, then burst out laughing. He touched the spot she had kissed with his large hand, his handsome face suddenly filled with warmth and tenderness. He then lifted his foot and followed her inside.
No one knew that this scene had been witnessed by everyone.
“...Father, please have some tea.” Mingruo glanced cautiously at Emperor Xuli, who was resting with his eyes closed, and gently placed the tea tray on the table beside him. She wanted to say something, but seeing that Emperor Xuli showed no sign of speaking, her little face immediately became conflicted. She awkwardly glanced at Duanmu Yun, who was walking towards her.
"Your Majesty." Duanmu Yun knelt down respectfully to pay his respects. Emperor Xuli then slightly opened his eyes, a flash of enchanting purple light passing through them. "Rise."
"Thank you, Your Majesty." Duanmu Yun stood up and walked to Mingruo's side. Seeing her bitter face, he couldn't help but find it quite amusing. Just as he was about to speak, he heard Emperor Xuli speak, "Little Fourth, pour me some tea."
"Huh?" Mingruo was taken aback at first, then obediently replied, "Yes."
Emperor Xu Li sat lazily in the armchair, looking languid and carefree, not at all like someone who had suffered a knife wound and been poisoned. He slowly turned his head and watched as Ming Ruo's slender, snow-white fingertips picked up the purple clay teapot, elegantly poured tea into the cup, spun it twice, and then respectfully presented it with both hands.
His purple eyes remained calm, and no one could discern what Emperor Xu Li was thinking. But Duanmu Yun knew perfectly well that this cup of tea was not merely a daughter's offering to her father, but a loyal subject's dedication to the monarch to whom he had sworn to serve. Even he, usually so upright and dignified, couldn't help but feel tense. If the Emperor accepted the tea, it meant he acknowledged Mingruo's status. Conversely, it meant he hadn't cared at all about Mingruo saving him that day. Although the outcome wouldn't affect them, Duanmu Yun couldn't help but look at his wife. Seeing her lowered face, her exquisitely beautiful features, like a breathtaking ink painting, so like a carbon copy of the Emperor, his heart tightened. Although the Emperor was known for his unpredictable temper, Ruo'er was clearly his only purple-eyed offspring. No matter what, he wouldn't ignore Ruo'er; the only remaining question was whether he would acknowledge her or not.
Emperor Xuli remained silent, his bewitching purple phoenix eyes casually surveying Mingruo kneeling before him. His cold gaze swept from her dark temples to the slightly disheveled strands of hair clinging to her forehead, then to her long, fluttering eyelashes. From his vantage point, he could even see the delicate collarbone inadvertently revealed by her robe. His purple eyes flickered slightly, and Emperor Xuli softly hummed in agreement. "Give it to me." He extended his hand, long, handsome, and incredibly elegant.
Mingruo pursed her lips, a hint of trepidation showing in her purple eyes that were exactly the same as Emperor Xuli's. She carefully presented the teacup to Emperor Xuli's palm, nervously watching him lift the lid and take a sip. Only after his expression returned to normal did she secretly breathe a sigh of relief.
Her father's imposing presence was so overwhelming that she was still terrified even though she hadn't done anything wrong.
Duanmu Yun gently raised the corners of his lips, looking at the harmonious scene between father and daughter in front of him. He smiled slightly, and when he saw Mingruo's happy expression, he couldn't help but want to hug her and cuddle her, to pamper her.
