"Stroking the Jade" - Chapter Fifty

Qingwen thought of his gentle and charming appearance in the past, and then looked at him now, half-mad. Her heart ached more and more, so she forced back her tears and coaxed him to sleep. Tianxi was indeed exhausted, so after a while, he fell into a deep sleep.
Emperor Wu went to Yaoguang Palace, where Consort Zhu already knew about the matter. She told him directly, "This was not done by me. I have served Your Majesty for nearly thirty years, and Your Majesty knows my character well. I am pragmatic by nature and never do anything meaningless. Emotionally, although I dislike Consort Qin, I deeply appreciate her service to Your Majesty, so I never intended to make things difficult for her. Logically, I speak frankly, and I believe Your Majesty understands that even if Consort Qin bears many more princes, she poses no threat to me. Therefore, why would I do something so insidious and shorten my lifespan? It is neither morally nor logically necessary for me to do it. These are my heartfelt words; please, Your Majesty, understand!"
Emperor Wu was speechless. He had known Consort Zhu for decades, and he knew her true nature well. She was certainly not kind, but such insidious and pointless acts, which would only bring trouble, were certainly not something a shrewd person like her would do. Besides, even if Consort Zhu was a suspect, how could he really harm her? Therefore, he simply ordered Consort Zhu to hand over the person who delivered the bird's nest and send him to the Imperial Palace for interrogation.
The Imperial Household Department couldn't find out the truth either. It was true that the bird's nest was sent from Consort Zhu's palace, but the accompanying shipment didn't contain senna leaves. The palace servants involved in the entire process were subjected to severe torture, and some, unable to withstand the torture, gave incoherent confessions, only to be found completely undetectable by the investigation. For a time, no results were obtained. Instead, the palace was in an uproar, and panic gripped the people. Seeing that the commotion had indeed become too great, Emperor Wu ordered the Imperial Household Department to release the detained palace servants and conduct a more clandestine investigation.
Weiwei secretly rejoiced that she had handled everything herself, from gathering the herbs to grinding them into powder, all on her own that day. Moreover, it was she and Tianxi who shared the bird's nest and both were poisoned. In the eyes of others, it was thanks to her sharing half that the poison dosage was halved, preventing Tianxi's life from being in danger. In other words, she was Tianxi's savior. Therefore, no matter how much they investigated, they couldn't trace it back to her. However, she never expected that what she intended to do was cause Tianxi some abdominal pain and diarrhea, but instead, it resulted in a miscarriage. The situation had almost spiraled out of her control, and she secretly warned herself that she must be more careful next time and never make such a mistake again.
Tianxi has been resting in bed for the past few days, and the miscarriage has not caused too much damage to his body.
He was young, and his recovery speed even amazed the imperial physicians. However, his spirits had always been low, and upon hearing the news that the Imperial Household Department had released the palace servants, he immediately became agitated: "Why? Why did His Majesty stop the Imperial Household Department from continuing the investigation?"
Weiwei sat to the side and sighed, "There was no other way, Tianxi. After all, Consort Zhu and several high-ranking empresses are involved. His Majesty was afraid that the repercussions would be too great and cause unrest among the people. So he had no choice but to make this decision."
Tianxi was already emotionally fragile and depressed, and hearing this confirmed his suspicions. He became even more agitated: "His Majesty actually thinks like this? Doesn't he think about how his own flesh and blood have been lost so inexplicably? Consort Zhu and the others are important, but what about my child? That's his own flesh and blood too! How can he be so heartless? No, no, I have to tell him. I must beg him to continue the investigation. We must find the murderer."
As he spoke, he recklessly jumped off the bed barefoot and tried to rush out. Qingwen and Weiwei quickly grabbed him and tried to pull him back, repeatedly saying, "Your Majesty, please don't be impulsive. Let's discuss this further."
Tianxi was far from certain; the commotion was so intense that she didn't even hear a single announcement from outside the palace that Emperor Wu had arrived.
As soon as Emperor Wu stepped into the inner palace, he saw that the room was in complete chaos, with Tianxi, whose clothes were disheveled, in the middle.
He frowned and asked, "What happened?" Then he noticed that Tianxi was barefoot on the floor tiles, and felt a pang of sympathy. He walked over and gently and affectionately complained, "Why did you come down without shoes? You just suffered a great ordeal, and the imperial physician said your energy hasn't fully recovered yet. Go back to bed and lie down."
He then blamed the palace servants for their poor service, and Qingwen humbly apologized. Emperor Wu reached out to carry Tianxi back to bed, which was already a rare act of tenderness and consideration from him, but Tianxi, blinded by anger, was no longer sensible.
Now, the mere sight of Emperor Wu reminds him of his heartless cruelty. An unprecedented and intense resentment towards Emperor Wu has gripped his heart, a resentment that has consumed all his reason. This leads him to shake off Emperor Wu's hand and coldly say, "Is Your Majesty showing concern for Tianxi? There's no need to waste your time. My heart is dead; those who fear death will not live much longer."
Emperor Wu was taken aback by his reaction. After regaining his composure, he felt a surge of displeasure. However, understanding that Tianxi had just survived a life-or-death ordeal and lost her unborn child, he calmed his anger. He smiled and said, "Look at what my little Tianxi is saying! Is my darling throwing a tantrum?"
He stood in front of Tianxi and teased her, but Tianxi turned away, her face ashen, and didn't utter a single word from beginning to end.
Emperor Wu chuckled awkwardly for a long time, but his expression didn't change. In front of a group of palace servants, he suddenly felt extremely embarrassed. His face darkened, and he said to those around him, "You may all leave!" Qingwen and the others knew the situation was bad, but they didn't dare stay, so they could only quietly take their leave. Weiwei wanted to stay, but after thinking it over, she realized it wasn't appropriate. She followed them out.
Emperor Wu felt slightly better after they left.
He looked at Tianxi's pale and haggard face, and finally couldn't bring himself to get angry. He stepped forward and pulled him aside, saying, "Go back to bed first, we can talk about it slowly!"
Tianxi shook him off once again. This time, Emperor Wu was truly angry and shouted sternly, "How dare you!"
Tianxi glared back at him fearlessly, and said defiantly, "Your Majesty, please grant me death!"
