Dragon Soul Heroes - Chapter 18: A Surrounding Assault

Cui Die blushed and put on her crimson dress and red skirt. Then she helped Long Hui change his clothes. After the couple were dressed, they walked towards the living room.
Mu Xin'er sat gracefully in the guest seat, while Lin Birou served tea to her. Long Hui bowed and said, "Greetings, Madam Guoyuan."
Mu Xin'er's cheeks flushed slightly, her beautiful eyes sparkling with a mixture of shyness and joy. After a moment of hesitation, she said, "Long Hui, I received a secret report from Ling Yun this morning..."
He then handed a note to Long Hui. Long Hui took it and read the following words: "On the seventh day of the third month, the main force of the army intends to attack south of Cangsou. I hope you will be cautious."
The seventh day of the third month... isn't that the day after tomorrow? Long Hui frowned, assessing the credibility of the secret report in his mind. Just as he was deep in thought, he heard a silvery laugh coming from outside: "Little thief, little thief, I'm back!"
A graceful figure in white came into view. Little Phoenix's scars had disappeared, and she was in a great mood. She used her lightness skill to run straight into the house with her long, slender legs. Wei Xuexin followed behind her, and the two sisters entered the house one after the other.
As soon as Chu Wanbing saw Mu Xin'er, she hurriedly bowed and said, "Master's wife, Bing'er greets you."
Wei Xuexin also bowed to the side, and Mu Xin'er smiled and said, "Bing'er, I heard you were injured a few days ago. Are you feeling better now?"
Chu Wanbing smiled and said, "Thank you for your concern, Master's wife. Bing'er has recovered from her injuries. By the way, Master's wife, what brings you here today?"
Mu Xin'er said, "Ling Yun had someone deliver a secret report to me, and I gave it to Long Hui."
Although Chu Wanbing was suspicious, she remained calm and asked with a smile, "Husband, may I have a look at the secret report?"
Long Hui handed over the note, which Chu Wanbing glanced at but didn't comment on before returning it.
After chatting for a while, Mu Xin'er politely declined to have lunch with them and left.
After Mu Xin'er left, Chu Wanbing said calmly, "Little thief, do you believe me?"
She was referring to the secret report, but this time she was much calmer and at least didn't tear up the note in front of Mu Xin'er.
Long Hui frowned and said, "I'm half-convinced."
Lin Birou said, "When Senior Lu launched a night attack on Cangsuo, he destroyed the south city wall. The city wall is still under repair. It is expected that the enemy will take this opportunity to retake this strategic town."
Long Hui handed the note to Wei Xuexin and asked, "Xuexin, what do you think?"
Wei Xuexin frowned slightly, pondered for a moment, and said, "I feel like it might be true, but I have a strange feeling in my heart, something I can't quite put my finger on."
Chu Wanbing thought to herself, "If Xuexin's feeling is true, then it must be true, but she also said there's something strange about it. What exactly is going on?"
Long Hui said, "Regardless of whether it's true or false, we must strengthen the defense of Cangcheng and never let this important town fall." The military order was issued again; Long Hui ordered Xu Hu to guard Cangcheng and strengthen its defenses, setting up a series of checkpoints and defensive lines in the south. Wang Dong and Liang Ming led their troops to provide support at the junction of Jinling and Cangcheng, waiting for the enemy to return.
On the seventh day of the month, beacon fires were lit again. According to scouts, the enemy had mustered 50,000 troops and set out from Xiangzhu County, intending to recapture the strategic town of Cangcheng in one fell swoop.
Upon receiving news of the enemy's troop deployment, Long Hui gazed at the map of Jiangnan. Xiangzhu County bordered Cangsong and was located in the southwest, but there was a Yuansuo Ridge between the two places. North of this ridge was rugged mountainous terrain, while south of it was flat plains. It would be easy to send troops from Cangsong to attack Xiangzhu, but it would be extremely difficult to attack Cangsong from Xiangzhu.
"Pass on my military order: hold Yuansuo Ridge at all costs, and do not allow the enemy to cross it!"
Long Hui calmly gave the order: Cangsou's southern wall has not yet been repaired, so it is not advisable to get caught up in the war again. Instead, we should use Yuansuo Ridge, a dangerous place, to resist the enemy and keep the war away from Cangsou.
The thunderclouds over Jinling never dissipated, making it difficult for the proud birds to take flight. There was also no waterway connecting Cangsong and Jinling, so the only way to deliver messages was by fast horse.
The Sparrow Shadows, tasked with the important mission of espionage, were equipped with the best warhorses and shuttled back and forth between the two cities.
Xu Hu ordered his general Lu Liang to lead 5,000 troops to guard Yuansuo Ridge. With the help of the terrain, the 5,000 troops were enough to withstand the enemy's 50,000-strong army.
The two sides engaged in a fierce battle at Yuansuo Ridge. Lu Liang had just made a great contribution and was in high spirits. His fighting spirit was high and his morale was high. He took the lead and commanded his soldiers to fight. Rolling logs, falling rocks, arrows and fireballs were used one after another to hit the enemy.
The fighting lasted from dawn till dusk, but the imperial army could not cross the line and was blocked halfway up the mountain by the Dragon Scale Army. However, the imperial army seemed unwilling to give up. As night fell, they set up torches at the foot of the mountain, illuminating the surroundings as if it were daytime, and continued their attack on the mountain.
The imperial army was determined to recapture Cangsuo. Anyone who retreated would be punished according to military law, leaving the imperial soldiers with no way out. They mustered all their strength and rushed towards the top of the mountain. One group of soldiers was driven back, and another group surged up. Those behind stepped on the corpses in front and threw themselves into the battlefield, swarming forward, determined to capture Yuansuo Ridge.
Lu Liang personally climbed the mountain wall, wielded his sword and cut down three enemy soldiers who charged up. He raised his arm and roared, calling on his comrades to fight bravely. The soldiers of the Dragon Scale Army were encouraged and their fighting spirit was even stronger. They used their flesh and blood to repel wave after wave of fierce attacks from the enemy. More and more corpses piled up at the foot of the mountain. Both sides suffered heavy losses. The armor of the Dragon Scale Army soldiers was covered with a thick layer of powder, which was mixed with blood, flesh and mud.
Upon learning of the fierce battle at Yuan Suoling, Cangsong immediately dispatched reinforcements, severely crushing the momentum of the imperial army. However, the imperial army did not give up, retreating five miles to set up camp for rest and regrouping before launching another attack the next day. The two sides then faced off at Yuan Suoling.
Inside Jinling, Chu Wanbing felt uneasy and restless, so she greeted Long Hui: "Little thief, I want to go and take a look at Cangsuo."
Long Hui frowned and said, "Bing'er, there's chaos outside right now, so don't wander around."
Chu Wanbing smiled and said, "It's nothing. I'll just take a walk around the outer perimeter of Cangsun and I'll be back soon."
Long Hui was still shaken by her previous injury, so he said, "How about this, I'll ask Elder Yuan to accompany you." Chu Wanbing stuck out her tongue and said, "No way! Uncle Yuan is so lazy. I'd be too much trouble for him with such a small matter. I won't have any wine for him to drink when we get back."
Just as Long Hui was about to say something, Chu Wanbing interrupted him with a smile: "Relax, relax, he's not a child. Besides, didn't you already amassed two large armies at the border of Jinling and Cangxi? He's just going for a short trip and will be back soon."
Long Hui knew this girl's personality, and since she was so insistent, he couldn't persuade her any further. He could only repeatedly tell her to be careful.
Chu Wanbing left Jinling with the two swords, Wuchen and Fengyan. She still had doubts about the meaning of the note, but because she had clashed with Mu Xiner last time and made Long Hui feel awkward, she learned her lesson this time. To avoid putting Long Hui in a difficult position, she simply said nothing and went to check the accuracy of the secret report first.
Chu Wanbing thought to herself, "Although the little thief will listen to me, without substantial evidence, he will have difficulty explaining to Madam Mu in the future. It would be better to take this opportunity to expose Gao Hong's weakness."
Thunderclouds shrouded Jinling, so Chu Wanbing used her lightness skill to travel. After leaving Jinling, she immediately used her Phoenix Divine Power to spread her wings and fly directly to Cangsuo.
Upon arriving at Cangsong, Xu Hu personally received him, bowing and saying, "This humble general greets the Little Demon Queen."
Chu Wanbing nodded and said, "General Xu, you've worked hard. How is the situation at the front now?"
Xu Hu saluted and said, "Our army has kept the enemy outside Yuan Suo Ridge, and they will find it difficult to cross the line."
Chu Wanbing asked, "Is the enemy army just launching a relentless attack on Yuan Suoling?"
Xu Hu said, "Yes, from yesterday morning until today, they have launched ten general offensives, deploying nearly 70,000 troops."
Chu Wanbing said, "Could it be that the enemy is only attacking from the south?"
Xu Hu said, "The only county town bordering the enemy to Cangxi is Xiangzhu, which is to the south."
Chu Wanbing asked, "Have precautions been taken on the other three sides?"
Long Hui ordered his men to settle Gao Hong in the military camp and find the best military doctor to treat his injuries with the best medicine. When no one was around, Chu Wanbing crossed her arms and sat down sullenly.
Long Hui asked, "Bing'er, are you still worried about Gao Hong's matter?"
Chu Wanbing snorted and pouted, "That kid is obviously suspicious. He only gave half the information, which almost caused Cang Su to get into trouble!"
Having already learned of the battle situation, Long Hui hugged her and coaxed her, "Bing'er, don't be angry. Isn't all of this thanks to you? You showed your skills and cleverly resolved the Cang'er crisis. Even if Gao Hong has a problem, you can't hide it from him."
Chu Wanbing gritted her teeth and said, "I really wish I could kill him right here in the military camp, so he wouldn't cause any more trouble."
Long Hui said with a wry smile, "That won't do. We have no evidence. If we rashly kill his master's wife, it will be difficult to explain to her. Moreover, he is being retaliated against for secretly helping our army. If we really kill him, it will damage the reputation of our Dragonscale Army."
Chu Wanbing said, "This won't work, that won't work, it's really too troublesome."
Long Hui said, "It's already puzzling that a weak scholar like him could break through the encirclement. Since we can't kill him, let's just send him to an outer city and put him under house arrest, so he won't ruin our important plans."
Chu Wanbing hurriedly stopped her, saying, "Wait! If he really is Cang Shitian's spy, then what we're doing might be exactly what Cang Shitian wants."
Long Hui asked curiously, "What do you mean?"
Chu Wanbing said, "A scholar breaking through the encirclement is an obvious flaw. How could Cang Shitian, with his cunning and shrewdness, use such an obvious method? When ordinary people encounter this situation, they can neither kill nor trust such a defector. The best way is to distance themselves from him, prevent him from contacting the high-level core, or put him under house arrest and surveillance!"
Long Hui nodded and said, "That makes sense, and most people would do the same."
Chu Wanbing said, "What would happen if we really exiled him to other cities and counties, keeping him far away from the core area of the Dragonscale Army?"
Long Hui frowned and thought carefully. Chu Wanbing said directly, "Our biggest advantage right now is that we can concentrate our forces to defend a few cities. Other cities are protected by the Earthly Branch Formation, so they are not afraid of enemy attacks. Now that the earth veins of Jinling are damaged, it is difficult to make the Earthly Branch Formation work. Therefore, most of our forces are concentrated in the Jinling area. What if another county city's earth veins are damaged during this period?"
Long Hui took a deep breath and said, word by word, "Then the Dragonscale Army will face a multi-pronged attack from the imperial court, and we will be dragged down by multiple battlefronts!"
Chu Wanbing said, "Therefore, we must not let him leave Jinling; we must keep a close eye on him!"
Long Hui said, "This would increase the risk of the Dragonscale Army's core secrets being exposed."
Chu Wanbing sighed softly, biting her lip as she asked, "Little thief, do you believe me?"
Long Hui nodded and said, "Bing'er is my heart and soul. Not believing you is like tearing my heart out. How could I not believe you!"
Chu Wanbing smiled sweetly, tiptoed and kissed him on the cheek, leaving a light lip print, and said, "Then our Dragon Lord and Demon Emperor will be a little man who listens to pillow talk this once!"
Long Hui laughed heartily, pulled her into his arms, and said, "Bing'er's whispers in my ear are sweet and fragrant, both honest and gentle. I'm afraid I won't be able to resist them!"
Chu Wanbing felt a surge of sweetness in her heart, and her depressed mood was somewhat relieved. However, the various events that had occurred today were still hard to shake off, whether it was Gao Hong's surrender or Duanmu Qiongxuan's marriage... "Although Gao Hong's matter is shrouded in mystery, there is still a direction, but it is the most urgent matter at hand."
Chu Wanbing leaned against Long Hui's chest and thought about it carefully, "Only Sister Duanmu's marriage... Although it doesn't seem like a big deal, I always feel that it might brew up a huge storm."
Recalling Duanmu Qiongxuan's poignant and helpless gaze, Chu Wanbing couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness.
