Heavenly Fate

Today is Sunday. While I was still sleeping in my dorm, I suddenly heard a loud cheer outside.
Not knowing what was happening, I groggily opened my eyes and cheered with delight. The sun was already high in the sky, and the entire dorm was bathed in brilliant sunshine. After
days of rain, seeing the sun again felt like a festival, and my whole being was instantly invigorated. No wonder everyone was cheering! My sleepiness vanished instantly, and my spirits lifted. Today was truly a good day. But what I didn't expect was that good fortune would follow my good mood. First, I won first place in the annual citywide university student software design competition announced today.
Second, shortly after the news spread throughout campus, I unexpectedly received a call from Meina, who invited me out for dinner tonight to celebrate. Everything went so smoothly! I was so happy I could hardly believe it. Winning the championship in such a highly competitive competition, the goal I'd strived for for three years of university, and now I'd won the heart of this beauty! My heart was pounding with excitement, and I couldn't calm down for a long time.
Meina was the undisputed beauty queen of our school. Not only was she naturally beautiful, but she also came from a prestigious family. She had hundreds, if not thousands, of suitors
, but her standards were extremely high. To win her favor and stand out from so many suitors was ten times harder
than winning a software competition. Of course, I was one of her many admirers. Although my poor family background and plain appearance made me feel somewhat inferior, my never-give-up spirit prevented me from giving up easily. Today, I finally succeeded! How could I not be overjoyed?
I instantly became a star. In the dormitory, my classmates surrounded me, all wanting me to treat them to a meal. Although I was short of money, I had no choice but to agree to avoid losing face.
Just then, a classmate came in from outside and said to me, "Zhongyi, you should go downstairs quickly. Someone is looking for you outside. It seems to be your mother."
This news was like a clear sky suddenly being covered by a dark cloud. My mood immediately darkened, and I secretly complained that my mother hadn't come earlier or later, but had to appear at this time
. In short, my good mood was gone in an instant. But since my mother had come, I couldn't refuse to see her, so I went downstairs with a unhappy face.
Under the shade of the trees in front of the dormitory building, I saw my mother. I hadn't seen her for more than half a year because I hadn't been home for the entire summer vacation.
My mother was still the same as before, wearing a dark gray coarse cloth blouse that looked like it had been worn for many years and was covered in dust. Her somewhat messy hair was tied in a bun, and she was carrying a faded bag on her shoulder. My mother saw me too, and her joyful eyes glistened with tears as she walked quickly towards me. Fearing that my classmates would see us, I quickly pulled her to a quiet place.
"Nao'er, I've missed you so much! Let me take a good look at you. Have you grown taller? Nao'er, you seem to have lost weight. Is it because you're too tired from studying, or is the food here not to your liking? Nao'er, don't study too hard. Your health is important..."
My mother held my hand tightly, as if afraid I would fly away. She looked at me with infinite love, as if she could never get enough of looking at me. Her habit of nagging was as always. I was getting impatient and abruptly interrupted my mother, "Mom, please don't call me by my nickname anymore, okay? It sounds awful. Didn't I tell you not to come to school? If you need anything, just ask someone in the village to pass on a message."
"Everything's fine at home."
"Then why did you come all this way?"
"I missed you, I wanted to see you. It just so happened that your Uncle Wang from next door was delivering goods to town, so I hitched a ride with him."
I thought to myself, secretly grumbling about my mother for always causing me trouble. I pulled my hand away from hers and said gruffly, "Mom, now that you're done looking at it, go home quickly. I'm very busy right now and can't spare the time to keep you company."
Mom didn't seem to mind my rudeness at all. She took my hand again and said softly, "I know you're busy, so just seeing you makes me happy. Go ahead and do your thing. I'm going back now. Here are your favorite rice cakes, I just made them. Take them to your classmates to try."
Mom reached into her bag to take them out, but I stopped her. "No need, I haven't liked them for a long time. Who cares about these things now? Mom, go home quickly, I have to go and won't see you off."
Urged on by me, Mom reluctantly let go of my hand, but after taking only two steps, she turned back, as if she had forgotten to say something to me. "Look at my memory, I was so focused on you that I forgot about this."
My mother reached into her clothes and rummaged around for a while before finally pulling out a small bag wrapped in a handkerchief from her inner garment. She untied the two handkerchiefs, took out a wad of cash, and stuffed it into my hand. I could clearly feel the warmth of her body on it.
"Nao'er, take this five hundred yuan. It's money I earned recently. You need money for many things now, so just tell me if you need more."
Of course, I knew how hard it was for my mother to earn five hundred yuan, but I didn't show it outwardly. I just nodded. My mother walked away, turning back every few steps. After walking a long way, she suddenly turned back and said, "Nao'er, you must come back for the Spring Festival!" I waved to her, watching her figure gradually disappear into the distance. It should be said that my mother's sudden arrival made me feel as if I had fallen from heaven back to earth. It reminded me that no matter how successful I became, the mark of shame on my back could not be washed away, and all of this was caused by my mother.
More than a hundred kilometers south of this city, in the Daqing Mountains, lies a place called Danyang. Although the mountains and rivers there are beautiful, transportation is extremely inconvenient, making it very impoverished. I was born there and spent seventeen unbearable years there.
Because it was so poor, people from my hometown flocked to this big city to work. In this city, you could see people from Danyang doing the lowest, heaviest, and most unwanted jobs.
Moreover, many of the thieves, prostitutes, and drug addicts wandering the streets were also from my hometown. Because of this, the residents of this city looked down on the people of Danyang, even though they couldn't live without us for a moment. Living in this city, I always felt inferior, afraid that people would know I came from there, and that my classmates looked down on me
. But what I felt most ashamed of was my mother. I was born without a father because I was an illegitimate child born after my mother was raped. My mother was only fifteen years old that year.
Her name was Li Yulan. Before that day, she was an ordinary rural girl. Although life was poor, she was still happy.
But on her way home from school that day, she was gagged by a pair of vicious hands, dragged into the woods, and brutally stripped of her thin clothes. Then... In that closed and backward rural area, a woman's chastity was even more important than life.
You can imagine how much of a blow this was to my mother's family. My elderly grandparents couldn't bear such a blow and soon passed away one after another. Only my uncle was left to take care of my mother.
From then on, no one wanted to marry a woman like my mother. My mother had no choice but to raise me alone, enduring hardship under the scorn of the villagers. From the time I was old enough to understand, I lived under the pressure of societal norms. I never experienced the joy of childhood.
No other child wanted to play with me; instead, I was constantly ridiculed and humiliated, and subjected to the whispers and gossip of adults behind my back. This harsh environment fostered in me a cold, withdrawn, and never-give-up personality.
I hated almost everyone, even my mother. I hated her for giving birth to me, for making me suffer such hardship from the moment I was born
. At home, I rarely smiled at my mother, and we barely spoke. Everything she did for me was taken for granted. I vowed that when I grew up, I would leave this place, I would make something of myself, and I would live an upright life.
At seventeen, I finally fulfilled my first vow: I achieved excellent results in the college entrance examination and was admitted to the prestigious university I am currently attending.
My mother, who had left Danyang, a place filled with nightmares, could finally hold her head high and stand tall before the villagers for the first time. Of course, her burden became even heavier; my exorbitant tuition fees weighed heavily on her. But my mother never uttered a single word of complaint in front of me.
This was because no matter how hard or tiring life was, as long as I was successful, her heart was filled with joy. I was my mother's greatest and only pride, her whole life.
But at that time, I didn't realize any of this. I still took my mother's hard work for granted, as if it were all my due, while my mother was paying off debts
in this city. I started a new life, trying hard to forget my humiliating past, but my shameful origins were like a ghost, always popping up and causing me unbearable pain.
Just as I was standing there lost in thought, a clear and melodious voice rang in my ears: "Zhongyi, what are you standing here for?"
I turned around and saw a beautiful young woman with bright eyes and white teeth standing behind me. It was Meina. I was a little flustered and stammered, "Nothing, I..."
"Who is that woman? Is she your relative?"
Meina looked at my mother's departing figure with obvious disdain on her face. My face flushed red, afraid that Mina would see through me, and I quickly lied, "She—how could she be my relative? She's our nanny, she came to town to sell things and stopped by to see me."
But I wasn't good at lying, and my expression was very unnatural. I had previously told Mina that I lived in Danyang County and that my parents ran several factories.
Because Mina looked down on people from the countryside, I was afraid that if Mina knew my family background, she would ignore me, so I had to lie to her against my conscience. I didn't know how long I could keep it up, but vanity drove me to grit my teeth and keep going.
"Mina, let's not talk about her anymore. What are you doing here?" "I went to the department to take care of some things and just happened to be passing by. Oh, I have to go now, I won't talk to you anymore. Remember, 7 pm, Wisteria Garden, see you there."
I nodded excitedly. For the sake of tonight's wonderful date, I decided to temporarily forget all my troubles and savor the hard-won success
. I spent the whole afternoon in indescribable excitement. Before seven o'clock, I dressed in my best, holding a bouquet of bright red roses, and excitedly arrived at the Wisteria Garden. This was the most attractive spot in our university, known by students as the "corner of love."
Seven o'clock passed quickly, but Mina was still nowhere to be seen. I waited anxiously, constantly checking my watch until 7:30 before Mina finally arrived.
I rushed to greet her, beaming, and presented her with the roses, my words trembling with excitement: "Mina, you, you're here!" "I'm so sorry, Zhongyi, something kept me waiting. Were you worried?"
"No, no, how could I? Mina, you look so beautiful tonight."
"Am I not beautiful usually?" Mina turned her head and smiled gently, her unintentional charm captivating me. I was mesmerized, completely mesmerized .
Tonight, Mina wore a pale yellow, form-fitting long dress, which accentuated her slender figure, making her even more graceful and charming.
I mustered my courage and took Mina's hand. Mina didn't refuse; instead, she snuggled even closer to me. This was the first time I'd ever held a girl's hand, and I was overwhelmed with excitement. My face flushed, and my heart pounded. Luckily, it was nighttime, so Mina probably didn't notice that
we'd come to a quiet corner surrounded by blooming flowers and sat down. Mina was very close to me, and a faint, sweet fragrance wafted into my heart. I felt as if I were intoxicated.
We chatted for a while, but suddenly we couldn't find anything to talk about, and we both fell into a temporary silence. Just as I was cursing myself for being useless and racking my brains for a way to confess to Mina, Mina smiled and whispered in my ear, "Zhongyi, do you really like me?" I never expected Mina to be so direct. I was caught off guard, my palms were sweaty, and I stammered, my face flushed, "I like you, Mina, I really, really like you."
But Mina's next words were even bolder: "Zhongyi, have you ever kissed a girl?" Mina held my hand tightly, turned her head and looked straight at me. Her big, watery eyes sparkled in the darkness, incredibly alluring.
At that moment, I felt as shy as a little girl, and my heart felt like it was about to jump out of my chest. My mouth was parched, and after struggling for a long time, I couldn't utter a single word. I could only shake my head vigorously.
"Look how scared you are," Mina chuckled. "You're not like a man at all. Do you dare to kiss me?"
My mind was completely blank. Happiness had come so quickly, it was unbelievable. I wondered if I was dreaming.
Those red, alluring lips were slightly parted in front of me, full of temptation. I swallowed hard and mustered up my courage to kiss her.
The moment I touched Mina's cherry lips, before I could even savor the electric sensation, she wrapped her arms around my neck, and our lips pressed tightly together.
This was my first kiss. I was incredibly clumsy, completely passively enveloped by Mina's passion. I didn't dare look into Mina's eyes, my body stiff, not knowing where to put my hands.
Mina hugged me even tighter, almost her whole body falling onto me. Her full, hot breasts pressed tightly against my chest, and my penis was so hard it felt like it was about to burst out of my pants. If this continued, I was practically going crazy. After a while,
Mina said softly, "Zhongyi, let's go somewhere else, to my rented apartment for a while, okay?"
I nodded blankly. At this point, I was completely under Mina's control. She could make me go through fire and water without hesitation.
We left the school gate and soon arrived at Mina's rented apartment. Mina took my hand and sat down on the edge of the bed. Mina smiled at me and asked, "Zhongyi, I'll ask you one more time, do you really want to be with me?"
My face flushed red, and I grabbed her hand, quickly saying, "I swear to God, Mina, I truly love you. I'd do anything for you."
"Look at you, silly thing. Let go, you're hurting my hand. But whether I believe you depends on your performance tonight. You have to be obedient, understand?" I nodded vigorously. Mina started kissing me again, and I just passively responded
as her hands caressed my body, slowly unbuttoning my clothes and taking off my shirt. "Wow, I never expected your body to be so great, so strong!"
Mina exclaimed, stroking me with delight. I just smiled foolishly and remained seated. Suddenly, I felt a jolt in my chest, as if a strong electric current was coursing through my body. It was Mina gently licking my nipple with the tip of her tongue.
As a virgin, how could I withstand such teasing? I groaned, as if enduring the gentlest yet cruelest torture in the world. My manhood stood erect again, my lower body burning like I was on the edge of a volcano.
Mina continued to kiss my chest, occasionally glancing at me with a smile. She began to knead my bulging crotch with her small hands and unbuckle my belt.
With a gasp, I felt a chill run down my spine. My underwear had been pulled down by Mina. "Zhongyi, your endowment is quite nice, isn't it?"
Seeing such explicit and provocative words coming from those red and sexy lips, my inner desires grew increasingly uncontrollable. Mina, instead of adding fuel to the fire, gripped my throbbing penis, her delicate, pearly hands moving up and down, stroking it.
I could no longer bear it. The magma, which had been frozen for centuries, finally erupted with heat, and thick white liquid flew far away, with a few drops landing on Mina's face. "Mina, I'm sorry, I, I—"
But Mina wasn't angry at all. She chuckled and pushed me away, wiping the semen off her face and even sucking on it. I stood naked before her, unsure whether to stand or sit, utterly mortified.
But my gaze quickly froze as Mina slowly undressed, her movements so graceful and alluring.
As each garment fell away, the snow-white flesh of a young girl was revealed to me for the first time, leaving me dizzy and speechless. My recently softened penis instantly hardened again.
Mina smiled triumphantly, came to me, and coquettishly hooked her arms around my neck, pressing her full, hot breasts against my chest.
She pushed me down onto the bed and kissed me wildly, her firm breasts rubbing against my chest, whispering in my ear, "Zhongyi, kiss me, I want you to kiss me hard, caress me."
My primal, latent desires finally erupted. I suddenly flipped over and pinned Mina beneath me, my movements as powerful and stimulating as a revving engine.
Like a thirsty traveler in the desert, I greedily kissed her, caressed her breasts, and stroked her body.
But I was clumsy, like a toddler just learning to walk; everything seemed so childish and laughable. I tried to enter her body like I'd seen in porn, but I just couldn't get it right.
Mina was getting impatient. She grasped my penis, aimed it at her wet, swollen vulva, and gently pushed it in. My entire shaft slid into her overflowing paradise.
The feeling was incredible. My penis was enveloped in a warm, moist, delicate, and tight cavity. I thrust with all my might, just like I used to roam freely on the sports field.
Although this was my first time experiencing sex, I vaguely sensed that Mina wasn't a virgin. But that thought was fleeting; I was quickly overwhelmed by the overwhelming pleasure.
But I was useless; I ejaculated very quickly. However, Mina continued to tease me, and soon I was full of energy again, driving
Mina wild in bed. Under her guidance, my lovemaking skills became more and more proficient. Mina was driven to ecstasy by me, repeatedly saying how satisfying it was.
We continued until we were exhausted before finally calming down. Mina nestled contentedly in my arms, talking to me. "Zhongyi, can you take me to your house sometime?" Of course,
I didn't dare take Mina home, so I just gave a casual reply. Just as I was about to change the subject, I heard Mina say again, "You'd better tell your parents to be careful of your nanny. My aunt used to have a nanny from Danyang, and my aunt treated her very well, but who knew that the nanny would steal a lot of money and jewelry from the house and run away. If you ask me, there aren't many good people from Danyang."
My face turned red, and I could only say yes, quickly changing the subject, afraid that Mina would say something I couldn't face.
As we talked, Mina gradually fell asleep. I gazed at her sleeping form, my heart filled with a multitude of emotions. The wonderful mood I had for the evening had vanished. I was terrified of losing Mina, and I couldn't imagine what she would do if she knew the truth.
My mind was a blank; I dared not think about the future, not even have the courage to face tomorrow. Love and family ties... In the blink of an eye, more than a month had passed. Mina and I grew closer and closer, inseparable. Whenever I saw the envious looks from the boys around us, I felt an indescribable sense of pride.
However, despite my outward success, the lingering shadow in my heart would still occasionally resurface and torment my soul. I lived in constant fear, carefully dealing with Mina, afraid of inadvertently giving myself away.
But even the most careful precautions can slip up, and once, Mina almost discovered my secret. And this time, the person who drove me to the brink was my mother again.
That afternoon, I was playing ball with some classmates on the playground when I suddenly looked up and saw a familiar figure in the distance. I looked closely and realized it was my mother. She was standing at the edge of the playground, looking
around for me. I was furious, but afraid of being seen by my classmates, I quickly made an excuse to go to the toilet and ran towards my mother. When my mother saw me, she was overjoyed and said, "Nao'er, I've finally found you! Playing ball with your classmates?"
Even though I've told her countless times, my mother can't break the habit of calling me by my nickname. I really had no choice but to let her be. "Mom, why aren't you at home? What are you doing here again?"
"Nao'er, how could you forget? Today is your birthday."
"My birthday is October 12th, it's still a long way off."
"You're talking about the Gregorian calendar, I'm talking about your lunar birthday, the eighth day of the ninth month. I already went to the temple yesterday to burn incense, praying to Guanyin Bodhisattva to bless my Nao'er with good health, wealth, and prosperity." I was both angry and helpless after hearing this, and said with a wry smile, "Mom, what era are we living in? You still believe in those gods and ghosts."
"Nao'er, I wouldn't dare say anything offensive to the Bodhisattva. I saw that it's the beginning of autumn, and it's getting colder every day, so I brought you the sweater I made. Try it on and see if it fits."
As she spoke, Mom handed me the sweater. At this moment, I only wanted her to go back quickly, afraid that if she was late, acquaintances, especially Meina, would see her, so I quickly said, "No need to try it on. It's getting late, you should go back quickly, or you might not be able to catch a ride."
"Nao'er, well, I'll head back then. You go ahead with your work, don't see me off." But I could tell that my mother really wanted to stay a little longer, even if she didn't say anything, just looking at me would be enough. She walked very slowly, turning her head to look at me every two steps.
But I couldn't wait any longer. Just as I was about to leave, I heard a "Ouch!" The sound sounded so familiar. I quickly turned around and froze on the spot like a wax figure.
It turned out that my mother, preoccupied with looking at me, had accidentally stepped on a girl's foot, and to make matters worse, that girl was none other than Meina. What a small world! I was so scared that my mind went blank, not knowing how to handle the situation.
My mother was also terrified and hurriedly apologized to Meina. "Girl, I'm so sorry, is your shoe ruined? I'll pay for it."
"Pay for it? Can you afford to pay for it? These shoes of mine are enough for you to eat for half a year in the countryside. Don't you have eyes? It hurts so much!" I
never expected Meina to be so angry. She was like a completely different person. I couldn't imagine her reaction if she found out I was lying. Seeing that there was no way to avoid it, I had no choice but to bite the bullet and walk over
. My mother and Mina saw me too, looking like they'd seen a savior. Before they could react, I shouted at my mother, "What's wrong with you? So careless! I told you not to come, but you insisted. Go back now, don't get in my way."
My mother looked at me in surprise, her mouth opened, but she didn't say anything. Afraid she might say something unpleasant, I winked at her and urged her to leave quickly. My mother probably understood something; to avoid putting me in a difficult position, she turned and walked away quickly
. Only after she was out of sight did I feel relieved. Mina was still somewhat unwilling and said sullenly, "Zhongyi! Why did you let her go? Do you know her?"
"Forget it, Mina, just give me some face. She's our nanny, you met her last time."
"Oh, it's her. It's been so long, who would remember? We can't let her get away with this so easily. Zhongyi, I need you to tell the family to fire her."
To appease Mina, I had no choice but to agree readily. A storm was thus resolved thanks to my wit. A few days later, Mina had completely forgotten about it, but I still couldn't forget it. Every time I thought about it, I felt a chill run down my spine, and I secretly prayed that such a terrifying experience would never happen again.
The Spring Festival was fast approaching, but I remained at school, unwilling to go home. My classmates had all gone home early, full of joy; Mina had left too, leaving me alone in my dormitory.
I dragged my feet until New Year's Eve before finally packing my things, even putting the beautiful crystal flower—Mina's birthday gift—into my bag, and boarding the bus home.
It was snowing heavily that day, with a biting wind blowing, turning the entire earth white. The bus entered the familiar Daqingshan Mountains, and I got off at a mountain hollow. Braving the swirling snow, I slowly and laboriously walked up the rugged mountain path.
Suddenly, I stopped, because I saw my mother. I don't know how long my mother had been standing in the heavy snow. She was almost a snowman, constantly rubbing her hands, which were almost frozen.
My mother was wearing her bright red cotton-padded coat, which she rarely wore, and a thick scarf, but her face and the tip of her nose were already red from the cold.
Looking at my mother, even though I had been resentful towards her, I couldn't help but feel a strange sense of emotion welling up inside me. I quickly took two steps to go to her and called out, "Mom!"
She happily answered, as if this was her most precious New Year's gift. I saw tears welling up in her eyes.
"Nao'er, I was worried you wouldn't be able to come back with this heavy snow. I've been waiting for you here every day these past few days. Okay, that's enough. It's cold, let's go home!"
Although my family was poor, my mother had prepared a lot of New Year's goods for me since I rarely came back
. I was treated like an emperor, while my mother was busy running around, rarely sitting down to rest. Although she was very tired, I could tell that she was very happy.
Three years of city life had made me very unaccustomed to everything at home, and although the pain from that unhealed wound continued to torment me, I decided to forget everything for the next few days, get along peacefully with my mother, and calm my mind that had been in turmoil for a year.
But things didn't go as planned. Just three days later, the surface peace was broken .
That morning, I had just returned from my run and was eating breakfast when I suddenly heard a "crash" from my room
, as if something had broken. I was startled and quickly put down my rice bowl. I went into the house and saw that my most beloved crystal flower, the one Mina gave me, was broken into several pieces on the ground. My mother was frantically picking up the
broken pieces. Looking at the broken crystal flower, my heart felt like it had shattered as well. The anger I had suppressed for twenty years finally exploded at this moment.
I rudely pushed my mother away and picked up the pieces from the ground. My mother didn't understand why I suddenly acted like a madwoman, and could only stand helplessly to the side, watching me in horror.
"Nao'er, it's all my fault. I wasn't paying attention when I was wiping the table. This is very valuable, can it be fixed?" "Fix it, fix it? It's already like this, how can it be fixed!"
I roared at my mother, my face terrifying. My mother was frightened and kept backing away. "Mother, do you know how important this crystal flower is to me? And you destroyed it. Why!
Why are you always like this? Whenever I have a sense of accomplishment, you always have to come and ruin it. Just because I call you Mother, can you hurt me like this!"
"I told you to stay at home and not come to school, but you insisted on coming, making me lose face in front of my classmates. I told you not to always praise me in front of outsiders, but you always talk about me all the time, as if you want the whole world to know that I am your son."
"Nao'er, could it be... could it be that your mother is wrong too?" My mother looked at me, puzzled, seemingly feeling wronged
. I had completely lost my temper. I stepped forward, looked into my mother's eyes, my face contorted, and shouted, "Mother, of course you're wrong! You're wrong for giving birth to me and raising me! Why are you my mother?! Why was I born in this poor mountain village?! I can't hold my head up in front of anyone, no matter where I am! From the moment I was born, people pointed at me behind my back and said—'He's a bastard!'
" The word "bastard" clearly deeply hurt my mother. I ruthlessly ripped open the scars she had buried for twenty years. My mother's lips trembled, and tears fell like broken beads. With a "smack," my mother slapped me hard.
This was the first time my mother had ever hit me. I covered my throbbing cheek, clutching the broken crystal flower, and turned to run away. After hitting me, my mother immediately regretted it and chased after me, crying,
"Nao'er, Nao'er, don't go! It's all my fault, I shouldn't have hit you!"
But I had already run far away. My mother collapsed limply on the doorstep, silently sobbing as she watched my retreating figure. I ran downhill with all my might until I collapsed by the roadside, exhausted, tears streaming down my face. I stayed at home for three days before returning to school. Soon after, school started, and Mina came back to my side. Two months passed quickly, and I gradually forgot about the incident. My mother didn't look for me at school again, only sending me money once.
My relationship with Mina grew even stronger, and we even planned what would happen after graduation. I was full of hope and confidence for the future. But then, a sudden change drastically altered everything—including me.
One day, while I was playing ball with my classmates, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. The pain made me break out in a cold sweat, and I crouched on the ground in agony. Seeing this, my classmates rushed me to the hospital. The doctor diagnosed me with acute appendicitis and said I needed immediate surgery
. The surgery was successful, but I'll have to stay in the hospital for a few more days before the stitches are removed. This was my first time being hospitalized, and I felt quite bored. Fortunately, Mina came to keep me company whenever she had free
time, which made the day a little easier. I was lying in the hospital bed receiving an IV drip, while Mina was peeling an apple beside me, vividly recounting the interesting things that happened to her that morning. Just then, the door to the ward opened, and my mother and uncle walked in one after the other.
My head buzzed; it felt huge. How did Mom know I was hospitalized? And of all times, she came at this crucial moment. I was at a loss, because to make matters worse, Uncle was there too. Uncle has a straightforward and fiery personality, and I'm usually terrified of him.
"Nao'er, why are you in the hospital? Are you feeling better now? You didn't even tell Mom you were in the hospital . If Weidong hadn't told me when he came back from school, I'd still be completely in the dark."
Mom seemed to have forgotten about that incident. As soon as she entered the room, she focused all her attention on me and didn't notice Meina beside me. I was already stunned, and it was too late to stop Mom.
"Zhongyi, what's going on? Isn't she your housekeeper?"
Meina stared at me in disbelief. Under her piercing gaze, I felt like a thief about to succeed, only to have my hand caught trying to steal someone else's money. I felt utterly hopeless.
"Mina, Mina, let me explain! It's all a misunderstanding!"
"Don't say anything! You liar! I hate you! We're over! I never want to see you again!"
Mina wouldn't listen to my desperate explanations. She screamed and ran away. I couldn't bear to lose Mina like this. Ignoring my IV drip, I pulled out the needle and tried to chase after her. But my mother rushed forward to stop me.
"Nao'er, you're still getting an IV. Your health is important."
"Mom, get out of my way! Don't stop me!"
My resentment towards my mother deepened. Her obstruction only fueled my anger. I shoved her aside, but I pushed her too hard, knocking her to the ground.
I acted as if I hadn't seen her, and was about to run after Mina when a large hand grabbed me forcefully. I had barely turned my head when I received a resounding slap. Before I could even react, another slap landed on my face. I saw stars, and my cheek burned with pain. Only then did I realize it was my uncle. His eyes were blazing with fury, his face was ashen, and he looked terrifying.
"I'll beat you to death, you brat! Nao'er, this is your own mother! How can you treat your mother like this? Aren't you afraid of being struck by lightning? Your mother has raised you for nothing! Even a cat or dog would wag its tail at her after all this time. How can you be worse than an animal!"
My uncle got angrier and angrier, waving his fist as if it would hit me at any moment. My mother had already stood up, and fearing that my uncle would hit me, she desperately stepped forward to block him. "Uncle, uncle, Nao'er didn't mean it, please stop hitting me, please stop hitting me!"
I covered my face, hiding behind my mother, feeling extremely wronged. I decided to go all out and shouted, "Why are you hitting me? What did I do wrong? Did I owe you something in my past life? If you hadn't come, Meina wouldn't have left. If it weren't for my mother, I wouldn't be looked down upon everywhere, unable to hold my head up in the village, and having to be careful at school—"
"Slap!" My uncle slapped me across the face again, and even though my mother desperately tried to hold him back, it was no use. My uncle's hand trembled violently as he pointed at me: "Nao'er, are you even human? How can you say such things? How can you face your mother? You can wrong anyone, but you can't wrong your mother. She raised you, enduring so much hardship and suffering. It wasn't easy for her. Do you know how your tuition for the past two years came about? It was all earned by your mother selling her blood!"
These words struck me like a thunderbolt. My head spun, and I was completely stunned. I stood there, dumbfounded, staring at my mother in disbelief, unable to believe it was true.
"Uncle, please stop, I beg you, please stop," my mother pleaded, sobbing. She looked so weak and helpless; if she hadn't been holding onto him, she would have had trouble standing.
"Nao'er, you care about your pride, but doesn't your mother care about hers? If she were like you, she would have died countless times already." She lives entirely for you. As long as you succeed, no matter how much she suffers or how much hardship she endures, her heart will be filled with sweetness. How much she's suffered over the years—have you ever thought about it? I may not have studied as much as you, nor have your knowledge, but I at least understand one principle: filial piety comes first."
Mom wiped away her tears, glanced at me, and said, "Uncle, let's go back. Nao'er's illness hasn't healed yet; let him rest." Uncle, not wanting Mom to be sad, could only glare at me resentfully before helping her out. I stood there, still dazed, my head spinning, utterly confused. The two words Uncle had just spoken seemed to shatter into a thousand pieces, filling my body, swirling, striking deep within my soul, piercing my still-burning conscience: "Sell blood! Sell blood!" I couldn't imagine how much blood Mom's frail body would have to draw to raise enough for my exorbitant tuition fees over the past few years.
