Infiltrating the High School: Prologue ~ 03

Preface

I graduated from university in 2002, coinciding with a nationwide wave of layoffs, and failed to find a job as a recent
graduate . Amidst the immense excitement of watching the 2002 World Cup, which featured the Chinese team,
I hastily bid farewell to the university campus, feeling both dejected and lost. At that time, venturing to Guangdong was a major trend, and I
also chose to do so after graduation. However,

I soon found myself facing a lawsuit upon arriving in Guangzhou. It was my first time in Guangzhou. After getting off the train, I wandered around with my bag, aimlessly walking quite a
distance. Feeling a bit tired, I was about to find a small restaurant when a motorcycle sped past me. The person
on the back suddenly snatched my travel bag from my shoulder.
Snatching a bag in broad daylight on the street! My money and documents were all in that bag. Of course, I couldn't just stand
by the thief and kicked him.

I kicked the motorcyclist on the back in the waist, followed by a loud crash as the motorcycle overturned in
the middle of the road. The two motorcyclists fell underneath it, and a cement truck speeding by
couldn't brake in time and ran them over, crushing all four legs.

Logically, this was self-defense, but both motorcyclists were seriously injured and insisted I
attacked . Many people were present at the time, but it happened so suddenly that no one saw the details clearly, and to make matters worse, my
backpack containing all my identification documents was lost in the chaos. Thus, I couldn't explain myself clearly, and I ended up in a detention center, then
a jail.

My dream of venturing to Guangdong hadn't even officially begun, and I might be sentenced to ten or eight years first. My feelings are
indescribable. I didn't want to just sit idly in the cell; I had to peel garlic, the fumes making my eyes water constantly. If I didn't
complete my assigned tasks, I would face various severe punishments from the cell leader. I was already furious enough, and after only a few days in the
cell , I couldn't control myself and suddenly exploded, beating the cell leader to a pulp for no reason.
It seems you can't be obedient anywhere. After beating the cell leader, I was neither bullied nor forced to work
.

I arrived in Guangzhou in early June and spent nearly three months in the cell without anyone coming to question or
investigate in late August, the guards suddenly "sent" me out
of the detention center—or rather, kicked me out. I was like Pavel in *How the Steel Was Tempered*, suddenly released from prison
, considered a vagrant trying to make a living off the huts.

I walked aimlessly back to the city, penniless and without any identification. After leaving
the detention center , I was truly a vagrant. During the day, I wandered aimlessly, scavenging
leftover food, and at night, I slept on cement pipes at construction sites.

Before I knew it, I'd been a vagrant for a week. One day, I ran into an acquaintance on the street—
a fellow inmate nicknamed Old Duan. It felt like a chance encounter with a former cellmate. Old Duan very warmly
invited me to dinner; my stomach was growling, so I readily agreed.

This Old Duan was in his forties, with a lecherous, sleazy look. He said
he'd been imprisoned for pimping, and had been bailed out a little over a month before my release. However, I never imagined that this
Old Duan, who could play a traitor without makeup, was actually a secret agent.

In a private room at a high-class restaurant, Old Duan first revealed his identity, then said he wanted me to be
his secret informant, posing as a high school senior transferring schools, to infiltrate a high school in Shenzhen.

My first reaction was that Old Duan was teasing me. I chuckled and said, "Damn it, I've already
graduated from university. Pretending to be a high school student and infiltrating a middle school is like having Shao Jianbo impersonate a blacksmith—
the Butterfly Fan would recognize him the moment they meet!"

Old Duan chuckled. "You're naturally youthful-looking, and your voice is quite soft. You haven't entered society yet; you
still have that student air about you. If you said you were a high school senior, no one would be able to tell."

Old Duan continued, "If you could come up with that analogy, you must know that
before , he was a cook. The key to his successful infiltration of Tiger Mountain and deceiving the cunning and ruthless Zuo Shandiao
was that he was born for it. We've lived together in the cell for over a month, and from
the moment , I felt you had Yang Zirong's talent. Talent is the most important thing in any profession. People who are
naturally suited for infiltration don't need special training, and the less trained they are, the less likely they are to be exposed."

Seeing that I still didn't believe him, Old Duan... Duan solemnly said, "After I got out of prison, I
planned to recruit you as an informant. This isn't a movie or a play, so I can't make a hasty decision. Before finding you today,
I had already done a thorough investigation of you, even knowing a lot about your elementary school days. For example,
when you were in fifth grade, a bad kid who had repeated a grade often bullied you, but you often helped him with his homework,
and as a result that unlucky kid had to repeat fifth grade for another year."

He toasted me and lowered his voice, saying, "From now on, your name is Liang Mu, 18
years and 6 months old. Before this year's college entrance exam, you got into a fight and seriously injured someone, so you were expelled from your original school. One of your
distant aunts came to work in Guangzhou in 1989. Your aunt's ex-husband is a businessman with extensive connections in Guangzhou and
Shenzhen . Although he and your aunt are divorced, he has a good impression of you, so he brought you to Shenzhen
to continue your studies. We'll talk about the details later when it's convenient. School starts soon, so you need to memorize every detail within the next two days
."

"Liang Mu?" I muttered to myself, then couldn't help but ask, "Brother Duan,
what kind of mission are you giving me?"

Old Duan waved his hand firmly, "You don't need to know yet! After Yang Zirong went to Tiger Mountain, the first
thing he did was infiltrate the bandits. You should do the same; you need to infiltrate your high school classmates first. Remember, the most
crucial thing for an undercover agent is this: becoming one of them means you've already succeeded more than halfway!"

That night, Old Duan took me to a five-star hotel. My supposedly fictitious second aunt's ex-husband
was him. In less than two days, under Old Duan's strict supervision, I memorized all the details of an undercover agent's identity.
Afterward, Old Duan sent me to Longteng Middle School in Shenzhen. As a transfer student, I was assigned to Class 4 of the third year of high school.

To this day, I still don't know Old Duan's real name or detailed identity; I only know that he has been working in the shadows for many years.
I was a narcotics officer. More than three months after I successfully infiltrated the middle school, Lao Duan
was brutally murdered by remnants of a criminal gang he had dismantled. Only a portion of his body was found after his death. To protect his family's safety,
his true identity was never revealed after his death; the name and photo on his tombstone were fake.

I was Lao Duan's secret informant, and my infiltration of the middle school was arranged by him alone.
Lao Duan was kidnapped and killed suddenly, leaving me like a kite with a broken string, still flying
. Before his death, Lao Duan had met me several times but hadn't explained his specific mission or
objective . His sudden demise meant I not only lost contact with the organization but also didn't know who the enemy was. However,
this wasn't the most tragic part. The most tragic part was the difficulty in recovering my true identity; I could only continue as this tragic undercover
agent.

Lao Duan suddenly sacrificed himself at the end of 2002. It took me a long time to
fully the first semester of my senior year of high school had ended, and 2003 had begun. I could only continue being
this pathetic undercover agent. When the second semester of my senior year began, with no contact and an unclear mission, I
had no choice but to complete the mission Lao Duan had given me, at any cost and by any means necessary. To become my true
self again, this was the only viable option.

The last time Lao Duan met me, due to the unexpected appearance of one of my classmates, he left behind a Zippo lighter he had captured during the Sino-
Vietnamese War at the barbecue stall where we met. This
WWII-era American-made lighter was both the only memento Lao Duan left me and the only proof of my undercover identity
… Chapter One: The Campus Gang

Chapter One: Gang Meeting

Wei Shaodi, a 19-year-old student in Class 3 of the senior year at Longteng Middle School, is the leader of a small campus gang, nicknamed "Little
Landlord." The Little Landlord campus gang has seven core members—oh, right, if you include me, strictly speaking
, eight. On Sunday afternoon, Wei Shaodi gathered all the core members of his gang for
a meeting in dormitory 104 of the "Fourth Floor" high school. The topic was to discuss collecting protection money that evening.

Longteng Middle School was a key high school, and in principle, all students were required to live on campus. Most students lived in the city and could go home after the last class on
Friday , returning to school before Sunday evening self-study. They would live on campus for a week and would
bring some money from home. The term "protection money" was euphemistically used to describe extortion, and there were many
gangs , so the main activity was on Sunday evenings.

Longteng Middle School was originally a dilapidated rural middle school. In the mid-1990s, Shenzhen's urban expansion extended to this area, and it was
completely modeled after Hong Kong's prestigious Royal Noble Schools, rebuilt to standards far exceeding the original. Because
a new junior high school was also built at the same time, the rebuilt school only had a high school section and no junior high school. This dormitory building, known as "High School Building 4,"
was the only one that wasn't demolished and rebuilt, having been constructed less than two years before the school's reconstruction. It
was later specifically used as a dormitory for repeat students, hence the name. The four-story building had entrances on both the east and west sides,
dividing it into two sections: the east half for boys and the west half for girls.

Chen Xian and Chen Chao, the second and third members of the "Little Landlord Gang," were both repeat students and lived in
dormitory room 104 of "High School Building 4." Because it housed repeat students, the building was more loosely managed, so the gang
would gather in Chen Xian and Chen Chao's room.

Compared to the later-built luxurious student apartments, "High School Building 4" was far less luxurious.
Like most high school dormitories at the time, the layout and furnishings were simple: two
bunk , with a narrow space in the middle.

After the core members of the gang arrived, Wei Shaodi announced the start of the meeting, and sat down
on the chair by the window with his girlfriend, Wang Lu. The second-in-command, Chen Xian, and the third-in-command, Chen Chao, sat on
the lower bunks on the east and west sides of the window, respectively. The youngest, Xiao Liang, and Dou Zhen each stood at the doorway holding a baton. Another
girl Chen Shasha, and I sat on the lower bunks on the east and west sides of the doorway, respectively.

It looked a bit like a scene from a gang war, but in reality, this little landlord, Wei Shaodi, was a far cry from the legendary bandit leader Zuo Shandiao in terms of both background and
appearance . This kid was a genuine Shenzhen native,
looking like a giant monkey come to life. He was the son of a fishmonger in elementary school, but with the gradual
expansion , he suddenly became a rich second-generation in middle school.

Despite his unattractive appearance, his academic intelligence was even more disappointing. Wei Shaodi was
a well-known figure at Longteng Middle School. The reason this kid could dominate the school was because his older brother was a legitimate
gangster , quite well-known in the surrounding area, so the teachers didn't dare to discipline him.

Chen Xian and Chen Chao weren't blood brothers, but they were very much like Mu Renzhi's grandson from "The White-Haired Girl"—both were born with
a knack for flattery and cunning, serving as
strategists . Chen Xian, especially the second-in-command, was tall and thin, with a slender waist, and spoke and acted in a very effeminate manner. He
wasn't particularly bright, but he could come up with a bad idea in no time.

At the gang's expanded meeting on protection money, which officially began in a lively atmosphere, Chen Xian was
the first to offer a constructive suggestion: since everyone was gathered in dormitory 104, why not have
those who wanted to pay protection money come to dormitory 104 to do so? Wei Xiaodi immediately adopted Chen Xian's suggestion and ordered
his underlings to find the person who would pay the protection money. The extended gang meeting was thus concluded.

The targets of the extortion were mainly high school boys in their first and second years. Chen Shasha, being a repeat student, used this as an excuse not to
go out and find anyone. Wang Lu, being the boss's girlfriend, naturally wouldn't do errands. I also excused myself, saying I was new, and didn't go
either. Xiao Liang was about to leave when Wei Xiaodi stopped him. After the extended gang meeting,
only Chen Xian, Chen Chao, and Dou Zhen went out to deliver the protection money notice.

Wei Xiaodi's girlfriend, Wang Lu, was also a wealthy second-generation from Shenzhen, a naturally promiscuous girl. Although she was
Wei Xiaodi's girlfriend, she had affairs with several men.

Nearly half the gang went out, and the scantily clad Wang Lu immediately became intimate with Wei Xiaodi. Wei Shaodi glanced at
me and Chen Shasha, who were sitting on the lower bunks near the door, pushed away Wang Lu who was sitting on his lap, took out
two packs of "555" cigarettes and gave them to me, and gave Chen Shasha fifty yuan, telling us to go out for dinner first.

Wang Lu wanted to get intimate with him, and Wei Shaodi, clearly intentionally, sent Chen Shasha and me away temporarily, but
didn't let Xiao Liang leave as well.

There was still quite a while before dinner. As we walked out of the east gate of the "Senior Four Building," Chen Shasha gave me a mischievous
smile and said she needed to go back to her dorm to change, inviting me to her dorm for a while. I immediately agreed excitedly
. We walked to the west gate, and as if suddenly remembering something, I said I really wanted KFC
. Then I suggested that since the school gates weren't closed yet, we should go outside and buy some. Chen Shasha nodded in agreement,
gave me the 50 yuan Wei Shaodi had given her, and ran back into the west gate of the "Senior Four Building."

50 yuan was quite a lot of money in 2003; it was enough for a KFC meal for two.

I lit a cigarette, humming a tune as I strolled towards the school gate. After circling around, I returned to the "Senior
4 Building ," pretending to need to urinate, and ran to the north side of the building. Seeing no one around, I quietly approached
the window of dormitory 104.

Having lost contact and not knowing the specifics of my mission, I had no choice but to remain undercover at Longteng Middle School,
but I hadn't forgotten the mission Old Duan had entrusted to me.

The small-time landlord gang, led by Wei Shaodi, besides engaging in activities like collecting insurance premiums, also sold
cigarettes on campus—the "555" cigarettes Wei Shaodi had just given me. However, they weren't selling ordinary
cigarettes ; they were cigarettes laced with drugs, and the drugs were very unusual.
This was precisely why I joined the small-time landlord gang.

Just now, Wei Shaodi sent Chen Shasha and me out of dormitory 104, but didn't let Xiao Liang leave as well.
I immediately felt something was strange. As I followed Chen Shasha out the door, I secretly glanced
back out of and saw that as soon as Chen Shasha and I stepped out, Wei Shaodi impatiently told Xiao Liang to open
his backpack and take out a black plastic bag. But before I could see what was taken out of the plastic bag, Wei
Shaodi hurriedly came over and locked the door from the inside.
