Holding a candle and having a guilty conscience 1-4

Chapter 1: Theft

The world was burned to ashes.

It was a bizarre fire, burning relentlessly without a source, expanding outwards relentlessly. Water couldn't extinguish it, earth
couldn't cover it; whether it was a fortified steel structure, a base in the deep sea, or a spacecraft in the sky, none
could escape the fate of being reduced to ashes. To this day, no one has been able to find the cause of that fire, as if it were
a divine punishment sent down by God.

But as legend has it, fate left humanity with one last glimmer of hope:
the Nazca Lines in South America. For some reason, the raging flames could not cross the faint white lines of the Nazca Lines,
and this place became humanity's final resting place.

Whether it was fortune or misfortune, the fire destroyed too many people, yet the not-so-large Nazca
Lines managed to contain them all. For the remaining people, barriers of nationality, race, and language were
irrelevant; the most important thing was to survive.

The survivors soon discovered that within the area depicted in the Nazca Lines, countless vibrant green aloe vera plants grew. These
were no ordinary aloe vera; they not only quenched thirst and provided sustenance while maintaining health, but also possessed medicinal properties stronger and more comprehensive than
any medicine . If this plant had been present during the fire, it would have undoubtedly
caused bloodshed and endless wars. For those lacking resources, however, it was a tremendous miracle.
This new variety of aloe vera was named "Miracle Aloe."

It seemed humanity's bad luck had finally ended. After the remaining people began to use the Miracle Aloe to survive
and rebuild their civilization, the heavenly fire gradually diminished, eventually
disappearing completely as if it had never existed, leaving only the dark earth as its testament.

Overjoyed at this discovery, the people believed they could escape the Nazca Lines and rebuild their homes in a
wider land. However, fate played an even bigger joke on them.

At the horizon, a colossal candelabra appeared, like a towering mountain, visible
to all the survivors. The flames on its candles burned eternally, as if
an extra sun had appeared in the sky. The terrifying thing was that once outside the Nazca Lines' perimeter, everyone
was drawn to the candelabra like moths to a flame, ignoring the calls and attempts to stop them,
struggling forward even when attacked, their bodies mangled, or dehydrated, until their life
force was extinguished.

Worse still, humanity discovered with horror that after the candelabra appeared, even within the Nazca Lines,
if a single flame appeared, those who saw it would, like those who had left the Nazca Lines,
follow the candelabra until they died.

Humanity was gripped by despair. They found themselves trapped within the miniature Nazca Lines, their previously
established way of life negated. From this day forward, they would depend entirely on the Miracle Aloe for survival.
Many unable to bear such despair, went mad. Some committed suicide, others desperately fled
outside, and still others believed the Miracle Aloe was evil and sought to destroy it all. Of course, these individuals were quickly
subdued by others. Regardless of the true nature of the aloe, it was their last hope for survival.

Gradually, people accepted this reality. They abandoned open fires and instead built
a system around the Miracle Aloe. Fortunately, this aloe possessed a vitality
even more . Picked one day, it would soon grow back in lush abundance. Even though it
had been nearly wiped out by the madmen, a large patch would spring back within a week. It was this powerful reproductive ability that prevented
new conflicts from arising among the growing population, allowing a fragile harmony to be maintained.

Two hundred years passed in this way. Many things happened during this time, enough to change the entire human
race . For example, humans built a social system that relied entirely on aloe vera, not fire.
The terror outside the Nazca Lines was etched into their very bones. Except for a few who refused to believe in the supernatural, no one dared to step
outside . Although the people living within the Nazca Lines lived on the same land, they were divided into isolated islands,
with no communication, gradually forming vastly different cultures.

The story takes place within one of the Nazca Lines.

It was a pitch-black night. Because fire could not be used, and the light from the distant giant candelabra was
blocked by the Nazca Lines, people finished their day's work early and quickly went to
sleep. Even the most playful children had no interest in playing in such a dark place.

However, while everyone kept their doors closed, at the edge of the Nazca Lines, two small figures
peered out from among the tall aloe vera bushes, looking extremely tense.

"Hey, Urudi, is this really okay?" one of the figures said. It was a
girl who looked about fifteen or sixteen years old, with long, black hair cascading down her back. Although she was wearing rough linen clothes, it
still couldn't hide her youth. Her delicate face was full of unease about the other person.

"What does it matter, Asriabe?" another figure said nonchalantly, though a hint of nervousness lingered in his
voice . He was a boy of about seventeen, his face still bearing a touch of
childishness. "I'm just sticking my hand out a little bit, it should be fine."

"But the elders said that everyone who went out..."

"Eh, I was there when the elders were saying that. Everyone who went out of the giant painting died. I'm just sticking out one hand,
what's the problem?"

"But..." the girl hesitated for a moment, unsure how to respond, and could only say timidly, "Actually, you
don't need to pay attention to that guy. He's just deliberately trying not to agree..."

"I already said I came here of my own accord, it has nothing to do with him!" Uldi said
angrily In reality, if she hadn't been provoked by her neighbor's peer and impulsively agreed,
she wouldn't be in this predicament. "Alright, just like I said before, I'm just sticking out one hand.
If anything goes wrong, pull me back right away!"

"Ugh, I know..."

"Alright, then I'll..." Urudi walked to within half a meter of the edge of the Nazca Lines. One more
step forward, and he would face death like those before him. He took a deep breath, then shakily stretched out...
He made his move, and then…

“Ah!” Suddenly, Ulti’s hand, which had been extended from outside the painting, was engulfed in flames. Ulti was startled and screamed in
terror , even forgetting to pull back for a moment.

“Come back quickly!” Luckily, he had called the girl for help. Although the girl was also shocked, she quickly
recovered and grabbed Ulti’s free hand, pulling it back sharply.

“Ugh—” Ulti was pulled hard, lost his balance, and fell to the ground. Before he could say anything,
the girl rushed over and anxiously asked, “Are you alright! Do you want to go outside?”

“I…” Ulti, who had fallen to the ground, scratched his head and said after a long while, “Why would I want to
go outside? You know what will happen if I go outside.”

“Phew… That’s good, you’re alright.” Hearing Ulti’s words, the girl breathed a sigh of relief, but then
she became nervous again, “What about your other hand? Is it hurt?”

"Right, my hand... Huh?" Ulti stretched out his right hand, which he had just extended, and found that his hand was still
intact, without any burn marks. Moreover, on his palm, a flame
was slowly burning in mid-air. "This is... the legendary fire?"

Ulti couldn't be sure. People hadn't used fire for hundreds of years because those who saw fire would become
like the people who walked out of the Nazca Lines. To Ulti, fire was the
most terrifying demon passed down from generation to generation, not this... seemingly fragile thing in his hand.

Moreover, Ulti discovered that this flame could be ignited or extinguished at his will,
burning or flickering like a spark, as if it had become a part of his body. Although he hadn't tried it,
Ulti's instincts told him so, even though he didn't know what it was for.

"So this is what we end up with..." Ulti muttered with mixed feelings before turning to
extinguish the fire. "It's getting too late, shall we... feed it?"

At that moment, Ulti looked up and noticed that Asliabe's eyes were fixed on the flame in his hand
. The liveliness in her eyes had vanished, replaced by a blank stare reflecting the burning flame.
Confused curiously moved his right hand, and Asliabe's head followed his movement, her eyes
still fixed on the flame.

"Hmm?" Ulti thought Asliabe was too engrossed to hear him, so he simply hid his hand
behind his back to bring her to her senses. But to his surprise, Asliabe quickly moved closer, plopping down
on Ulti's lap, her upper body pressed against his, her small hands gripping his shoulders,
head bowed , staring blankly at the flame in his hand.

"Ugh...!" Uldi was speechless for a moment, suffocated by the sensation. The soft touch and faint fragrance of Asliabe's newly developed
breasts were something he had never experienced before, causing
a small tent to rise in his lower body. The friction between his genitals and the rough linen made him uncomfortable.

"Get...get up!" After struggling for a while, Uldi finally managed to utter a sentence. To his surprise
, Asliabe quickly stood up, staring straight at him without a word, making Uldi
feel a little uneasy.

"What...what was that all about?" Uldi asked Asliabe, puzzled. She had never done
anything like this .

"Because...the flame...is warm...I want...to get closer..."

"You mean you care about this flame?" Uldi reached out his hand, and the flame flickered in his palm once more.
Asliabe 's gaze quickly focused on it.

"Yes..."

"Then why did you agree so quickly when I called you? You used to have
to struggle for a long time before agreeing to things you didn't want to do."

"Because... you are the... wielder of flame..."

"Hmm..." Ulde was stunned for a while before she could figure out her thoughts. "Because the flame is mine. If you
want to feel the flame, you will listen to me and let me release the flame."

"Yes..."

"Hey, I thought it was something serious!" Ulde slapped her thigh and said nonchalantly, "We're
such good friends, and you're willing to come to a place like this with me at night. Want to see the flame? It's easy.
Just come find me when you have time."

"Yes... I know... when I have time..."

"Speaking of which, the way you talk seems a little strange. Is that okay?" Ulde suddenly changed the
subject. Could it be that the flame had caused some change in her?

"Then I... I'll turn back..." Asriabe closed her eyes, and when she opened them again,
the liveliness had returned. Only Uldi could barely see a tiny flame flickering in her eyes.
"See, is that alright?"

"No problem, no problem." Uldi stood up and patted himself. "Then let's go back.
It'll be troublesome if the adults wake up later."

"Okay~"

After walking a dozen steps, Uldi noticed that the girl was still following him and couldn't help but ask, "
Why are you following me? Your house isn't around here."

"Didn't you say I could come see the flames whenever I had time?" Asriabe said matter-of-factly.
"Now that I have time, I can just go to your house, right?"

"Eh? Eh? Eh?"
