Looking out to the ends of the earth

In room B03 on the
eighth floor of the Jihong Building, Gao Shili had been waiting for a long time. He was confident that Zhang Meiyao would come to their appointment. He was absolutely certain that he had never failed to get the woman he wanted, and the women he slept with were always completely submissive.
Sure enough, not long after, a fashionable and revealing young woman arrived at room B03. She was no stranger; she was the woman Gao Shili was waiting for.
Zhang Meiyao was indeed a first-rate beauty. As soon as she entered the room, she threw off her high heels, and her already very short skirt was easily pulled off, leaving only sheer pantyhose covering her alluring lower body.
"Hey! How long have you been here?" She had already sat down beside him.
"It's okay! You're here now, aren't you?"
Gao Shili pulled her into his arms, and Zhang Meiyao deliberately struggled for a moment before lunging forward to kiss him. Her body exuded an alluring perfume scent, not too strong, but just right.
The kiss was deep; their tongues intertwined, exploring and merging within each other's mouths, as if reluctant to part. Soon, Gao Shili pushed her away.
"Meiyao, let's go to the inner room on the bed; it'll be more comfortable."
Meiyao winked seductively, feigning coquettishness, and said coquettishly, "I want you to hug me!"
Without hesitation, Gao Shili immediately picked her up and placed her on the bed in the inner room. As he undressed, he directed her. "Meiyao! I want what's inside your pantyhose."
"You rascal!" Meiyao sneered, finally stripping herself naked and lying on the bed, waiting for him.
He didn't hesitate, immediately launching his attack. He held Zhang Meiyao's breasts, kissing her nipples. Her breasts were so full that his hands couldn't grasp them all, only squeezing and kneading them. He sucked on her nipples.
"Ah! Ouch... Oh... Oh..."
Zhang Meiyao felt an unbearable itch all over her body, as if ants were crawling all over her, and her delicate body trembled.
"Oh...oh..."
His hand had already reached her vulva, the lush, crescent-shaped mound nestled between a gently flowing stream. He tried inserting his middle finger into her vagina. "Oh! Such a tight hole." Then his index finger went in too.
"Ah...ah...darling...mmm...so itchy...mmm..."
His thumb pressed precisely against the clitoris above the vaginal opening, and with a series of rubbing motions, Zhang Meiyao went wild.
"Ouch...ouch...ouch...yeah...yeah..."
Zhang Meiyao, her breath sweet as orchids, was intoxicated, experiencing ecstasy, her juices flowing freely. His fingers were all there; he was truly a master of seduction. Seeing her eyes half-closed, her lips slightly parted, uttering soft moans, he knew she was overflowing with desire, and he didn't stop for a moment.
"Ah...Shili, I...want to change...positions..." At this moment, Gao Shili finally stopped.
So Zhang Meiyao took the initiative. She made Gao Shili stand on the ground, and then she squatted in front of his large penis. Gao Shili, of course, knew what she was going to do, so he remained silent and waited for her. Sure enough, Zhang Meiyao extended her long tongue and began to lick his genitals.
She licked his testicles first, and they immediately became sensitive and swollen. He looked down and saw her greedy eating, and countless ripples stirred within him. At this moment, Gao Shili's penis was already erect, like an 18th-century cannon, thick and long. Zhang Meiyao grasped his shaft and began to stroke it up and down.
"Ah..." he couldn't help but cry out.
Zhang Meiyao knew he was unbearably excited, so she took his penis into her mouth, abandoning her previous action of eating his testicles. His penis felt incredibly good in her mouth, and soon slippery semen flowed from the glans. Zhang Meiyao didn't hesitate and ate it all.
"Ah..." he cried out again.
Only after she was satisfied with stroking it did she ask him to play with her vagina.
"Okay! Baby, just lie on the edge of the bed, I'll fuck you."
Zhang Meiyao obeyed and lay down, and Gao Shili immediately launched his counterattack. He gripped his long spear, aimed it at Meiyao's vagina, and thrust in.
"Ah...ah..." Meiyao's plump buttocks trembled twice as the large penis entered, reaching right to her core.
Gao Shili showed no mercy and began to thrust, as if he had found a treasure.
"Hmm...hmm...ah...good...my...mmm...give...me..."
"Harder...harder...harder...oh...beautiful...I'm so...beautiful...hmm..."
"Don't...stop...please...please...ah...hmm..."
Meiyao was covered in fragrant sweat, feeling as if she had ascended to heaven, experiencing extreme pleasure. Gao Shili felt more and more comfortable as he fucked her, becoming like a fierce lion, sometimes grabbing her large breasts, sometimes pulling her long hair, and sometimes slapping her beautiful buttocks. These were actions designed to stimulate sensitivity and increase sexual desire.
"Ah...Meimei...Ugh...My...good...husband...yes...harder..."
She was being fucked to the point of ecstasy, panting heavily. Her juices flowed more and more, like the overflowing tide, flooding the grass beneath the hillside. With a spasm, Zhang Meiyao climaxed again, screaming wildly. He was having a great time, thrusting and shouting as if he were in a world without a care.
"Good girl...are you comfortable?"
"Mmm!" Gao Shili answered simply. He continued.
"When...when...you...come...out..."
"Oh...I...want...I want...to...come...ah..."
Before Gao Shili could finish speaking, he couldn't control himself anymore; his body surged, and his hot semen shot deep into Zhang Meiyao's core, a lot...a lot.
This time, both of them were exhausted from playing and soon fell into a deep sleep, embracing each other…
When Zhang Yao opened her eyes, four or five hours had passed. She had intended to wake Gao Shili beside her, but found he was gone.
“Maybe there’s another mission!” she murmured to herself…

II.
Gao Shili was reminiscing about the women he had been involved with. In fact, he had been with hundreds, if not thousands, of women. These alluring, sexy women had all been with him. And there were countless others. The ones mentioned above were just the best that came to mind first. Before each job, or after completing a mission, he had enjoyed countless kisses, breasts, and thighs—he couldn’t even remember them all.
Some might ask: How can one person be both a ruthless hunter and an invincible flirt? However, Gao Shili now felt his days were numbered, and disaster was imminent. This wasn't because someone had a gun pointed at him, but because of what the doctor had told him.
On Dr. Qiu's desk lay a registration card, charts, and several sheets of paper. The charts were written in words Gao Shili couldn't understand.
Dr. Qiu invited Gao Shili to sit down and said, "Mr. Gao, there are some things I need to discuss with you."
Dr. Qiu picked up the registration card and examined it for a moment, then said to Gao Shili, "Mr. Gao, you want to know your true health condition, don't you?"
"Of course, that's precisely why I've come to see you."

"You did the right thing, Mr. Gao. To be honest
, I've long suspected you have intermittent heart disease, and the test results confirm my diagnosis."
Dr. Qiu picked up the registration card again, pointed to it, and said, "You are thirty-five years old and weigh 165 pounds. For someone who is six feet tall, this is a very standard weight, which is beneficial to your health. Fortunately, I diagnosed your condition in time. From now on, as long as you pay a little attention to your body and follow one or two rules, you will be able to enjoy a normal, happy, and long life."
Gao Shili said somewhat uncomfortably, "So, are my shortness of breath and those pains all fake?"
Dr. Qiu said, "Not at all. I will explain it to you in detail. My purpose is just to dispel your concerns, not to make you think you will become disabled."
Dr. Qiu continued with a smile and asked, "Mr. Gao, what do you do? It doesn't seem to be written on the registration card."
"I work for an oil company."
"Do you work in an office?"
"Yes, but I sometimes travel."
"Does your mood get affected by work? I mean, does your work make you too mentally exhausted, even when you should be resting, you're still thinking about work?"
"Sometimes, that's true."
"That needs to be corrected immediately. Aside from normal professional needs, you absolutely cannot allow your mind to be overly stressed or stimulated; otherwise, I won't be able to help you recover."
Dr. Qiu said sincerely, "In short, Mr. Gao, you absolutely must change your lifestyle. You must live a quiet life, otherwise your heart will suffer even greater damage, which is tantamount to self-destruction."
Half an hour later, Gao Lishi took the escalator downstairs alone. Gao Lishi often prided himself on his decisiveness, and when he left the escalator and walked out of Park Avenue, he was already confident.
Gao Lishi certainly didn't want to die within a year or two, so he had to stop working; it was the only way. However, when he turned onto Third Street, Gao Lishi frowned. It was good to quit this line of work, but what about the money?
Gao Lishi carefully climbed the stairs and entered his apartment. He picked up the phone and dialed a number.
"Good morning, this is Sun City Design Company," a clear female voice came from the receiver.
"Is the chairman in?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Ma isn't here today. May I have someone speak with you?"
"No, please tell me where I can find Mr. Ma?"
"I'm sorry, I don't know..."
"Thank you." Gao Lishi hung up the phone.
Afterward, he dialed another number, spoke a few words to the butler, and then connected to the extension next to Ma Guihua's indoor swimming pool. Through the receiver, he could still hear the splashing of water and the woman's laughter.
After Ma Guihua answered the phone, Gao Lishi said, "Boss Ma, this is Gao Lishi. Regarding the business deal we discussed last week, I've changed my mind. I'm willing to handle it for you."
"I thought you really only did two things a year! Didn't you say it wasn't very safe?" Ma Guihua's voice carried a hint of smugness.
"Didn't I say I changed my mind? Do you still want me to handle it for you?"
"Of course, I want you to handle this for me. So, when should we meet?" "We
can meet anytime once the price is agreed upon. This time, I'll be charging double."
"Two hundred thousand? Why the sudden price increase?"
"I'll explain when we meet. In short, it has to be two hundred thousand, or forget it. I need this money, Boss Ma. If you don't agree, then you'd better find someone else."
Ma Guihua was silent for a moment, then a woman's voice came from the receiver, calling for someone to bring drinks.
Then, Ma Guihua snorted and said, "Damn it, I agree. You know I never hire second-rate stuff."
"Great, I'll definitely do my job."
"That's it. This matter should be resolved quickly. I'll contact you again later."
Gao Lishi hung up the phone, went into the bedroom, opened a box, and sat on the edge of the bed. He thought: Can I do this? Can my heart take it? Finally, he hardened his heart. Whatever, what other options are there? I have to find some money first. So, he quietly took out the pair of revolvers and began to oil them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
III.
Gao Lishi left Lagarde by plane on Thursday morning. Due to heavy fog, his plane arrived in Chicago two hours late. His watch showed eleven o'clock, and he had three hours to move around.
Gao Lishi went outside, hailed a car, and drove to the district. Forty-five minutes later, the driver dropped him off at the Midi Bar on XX Street. Gao Lishi entered the bar, put down his coat and hat, and found the person he was looking for. The man was sitting on a round stool in the bar. Gao Lishi walked over and sat down on the stool next to him, greeting him, "How are you, Long Feiyun?"
Long Feiyun was about thirty years old, with black hair, dressed elegantly, and a carnation tucked into his lapel.
After shaking hands, Long Feiyun said, "My friend, it's been years since we last met."
Gao Lishi ordered a whiskey.
Long Feiyun said, "When Ma Guihua told me on the phone that he had hired you, I was really happy. He's managed to hire someone as skilled as you; I think things will be handled much better."
Ignoring the doctor's advice, Gao Lishi downed the whiskey in one gulp and then said, "This isn't the place to talk. Let's find a quiet place! I have to catch my 2 PM flight."
Long Feiyun paid for the drinks, instructed the waiter to take them to a small private room, ordered food, and then the waiter left.
Long Feiyun said, "Boss Ma told me you have a heart condition, which is truly unfortunate. I heard you're going to retire after this job, is that right?"
"That's what I plan to do."
"Good, then I wish you every success."
The waiter brought the food and simultaneously retrieved a large envelope from the cloakroom for Long Feiyun. He then left and closed the door.
Long Feiyun patted the envelope and said, "Everything's in here. Should I tell you now?"
"The sooner the better."
"That's more like the tone of a professional assassin."
Long Feiyun smiled and said, "Have you seen the news in the newspaper about the Senate setting up a committee to investigate slot machine gambling?"
"Of course I have."
"Do you know Wu Dawei?"
"So you want me to deal with Wu Dawei?"
"No, it's a relative of his. If we get rid of Wu Dawei, how will he understand that we're punishing him? Our target is his family member, his only relative."
Long Feiyun pointed to the envelope and said to Gao Lishi, "This contains all the information about your target. There's also a third of the deposit, and everything we can gather is in here. In addition, there are some suggestions from my men on how to proceed."
Gao Lishi said, "I have my own action plan."
"Of course, I know you have your own methods, but this information can be used as a reference and will save you a lot of time."
Long Feiyun took out a photograph from the envelope and said, "Take a look first."
It was an eight-inch photograph, a full-body portrait of a woman. She looked to be about nineteen or twenty years old, with a bright and radiant appearance, a full figure, and wearing black clothes; she looked like a college student.
Long Feiyun said, "This little girl is quite something, isn't she? I'd really like to teach her a lesson myself!"
Gao Lishi frowned and asked, "Is it her?"
"Yes, it's her. Wu Dawei only has this one daughter."
"What's her name?"
"Meizhen,"
Gao Lishi said. "I've never dealt with such a young girl before!"
Long Feiyun's sharp eyes immediately flashed, and he pressed, "What's wrong? What do you mean?"
"Nothing, I just mean she's really young, probably still a minor."
"Even if she's not a child, so what? She'll still die just like everyone else, won't she?"
"That's not the point," Gao Lishi said, studying the photograph.
"I don't care where the problem lies, anyway, Boss Ma told me that you'd have to pay us 200,000 yuan to deal with this little..."
Gao Lishi immediately stopped him: "If you want to hire a bastard, you'll only make things worse. Do as you please."
Long Feiyun retorted defiantly: "So, you don't even care about 200,000 yuan?"
Gao Lishi said: "Forget it, what are we arguing about anyway? I just said I've never dealt with such a young girl before, am I wrong?"
"I just don't understand why you say that. Did this little whore really bewitch you with just a photo?"
Gao Lishi's heart skipped a beat, but he said, "Damn it, whatever I say, I'll do it. You want me to deal with this girl? I'll deal with her then. Stop the nonsense."
Long Yanyun breathed a sigh of relief and said, "That's more like the tone of a professional assassin."
Before leaving, he told Gao Lishi, "Once you get to Moores, you'd better stay at the Rainbow Hotel. My men might have some new information for me this afternoon; I'll let you know then."
As Gao Lishi rode the streetcar to the airport, thinking about his argument with Long Feiyun, he felt a growing sense of unease; but soon, he stubbornly thought: Forget about heart disease; he couldn't compromise his reputation as a professional assassin. Could that minor ailment have softened his heart?
Gao Lishi's plane arrived in Peola in just one hour. He rented a car in Ding Daping's name and drove towards Moores in the storm. It was 3:15 p.m.
Moores was 45 miles from Peola, and Cole estimated that in the wind and rain, without speeding, it would take a little over an hour to reach it. He relaxed and drove at a leisurely pace, passing cornfields and farms along the way.
At 4:15 p.m., Cole reached a housing construction site, and from the billboards, he learned that it was only three miles from Moores. By then, the rain had lessened, and it was just a drizzle. Cole drove about a mile further, and as he approached a sloping road near the city, he noticed a convertible parked on the side of the road, about a hundred yards across from a small restaurant. A man in a blue leather jacket was bending over, inspecting the car's left rear tire.
Cole looked up; there were no gas stations nearby. As Cole drove past the broken-down car, he lazily glanced back at the unfortunate fellow. He didn't look at her, but upon glancing at her, he was startled and instinctively slammed his right foot on the brake, bringing the car to a stop.
It turned out that the owner of the car with the flat tire wasn't anyone else, but the beautiful young woman he had just seen in the photograph, Wu Meizhen. Gao Lishi wondered: was what he was doing appropriate? However, he still pulled the car over to the side of the road, got out, and walked towards Meizhen in the misty drizzle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV.
Gao Lishi was already contemplating whether he should deal with her now.
He touched the brim of his hat as a polite greeting, then smiled at Mei-zhen and said, "Is there any trouble, Miss?"
Mei-zhen gave a helpless smile: "One tire is flat, and the other is stuck in the mud."
"Let me help you change the tire." After saying that, Gao Lishi walked around to the other side of the car, looked at the wheel stuck in the mud, and then said to Mei-zhen, "It doesn't seem too serious. After the tire is changed, you can start the engine from the front, and I'll give it a push from the back, and we can drive the car out."
He added politely, "Or I can drive up ahead to find someone to fix it for you, that's also an option."
Mei-zhen said, "No. But I'm really sorry to trouble you to fix the car for me." As she spoke, she gave him a charming smile.
As Gao Lishi sized up her beautiful figure, he said, "I'd be happy to help you with that. It's not a big deal, it'll be done in five minutes. Why don't you go to that little shop and have a coffee while I change the tire, then we'll drive the car out together."
Meizhen said, "Thank you."
Gao Lishi watched Meizhen walk into the snack shop, then assessed the situation. He couldn't help but curse his own stupidity, because if someone saw him and Meizhen together now, wouldn't it be very dangerous for his future actions?
The rumble of a large truck came from the road. What if the truck driver was questioned later and remembered him as the man who had been with Meizhen? But it was too late now; the situation didn't allow him to back down. To avoid arousing Meizhen's suspicion, he had to quickly start repairing the car.
Gao Lishi first removed the ignition key from the car. The car smelled of perfume. The back seat was piled high with luggage and boxes of fashionable hats. On the side window was a gold sticker with the characters "kao" on it.
As Gao Lishi changed the tire, he thought: "These 'kao' characters probably represent some kind of student fellowship." How ridiculous, the infamous assassin Gao Lishi, being completely fooled by a female student.
Gao Lishi quickly finished changing the tire and put his tools back in the trunk. He hurried to the small eatery, peeking through the window before entering. Fortunately, there were no other customers, only Meizhen.
"All done," Gao Lishi said, handing the car keys to Meizhen. His eyes lingered on Meizhen's face until the owner came out of the kitchen, at which point he sat down beside her and ordered a coffee.
The two sat there in an awkward silence. Finally, Meizhen broke the ice. She took a pack of cigarettes from her handbag, lit one, and said, "I'm so sorry to trouble you with such a difficult task."
"It's nothing, it's nothing."
"Was the tire punctured by a nail?"
"Yes, it was a nail. I put the spare tire in the trunk."
"I'm driving home from school for vacation." "
I don't think the two of us can drive the car out of the mud; the wheels are quite deep! Why don't I take you to the nearest gas station and have them tow your car out?"
Gao Lishi said, trying his best to appear nonchalant. Once she's in his car, things will be easier, he thought.
Mei-zhen glanced at the telephone on the wall and said, "I can make a call..."
"Of course, go ahead. But I'm driving to Morse City anyway, so a ride would be nice."
Gao Lishi carefully rolled up his sleeves, glanced at his watch, and said, "I have to go now. Sit for a while; I almost forgot I have an appointment."
"Oh, did I make you miss your appointment?"
"It's alright, I still have ten or twenty minutes."
"Do you travel often? Are you a salesman?"
"Yes." He added, "My name is Deng Shicai."
"My name is Wu Mei-zhen." She smiled and said, "What a bad day. I didn't even want to go home for vacation; Morse City is a boring place. Luckily, I met a kind person like you."
Gao Lishi: "No need to say anything, anyone would help you. Oh, I have to go now. How about you, want to come with me?"
Mei-zhen glanced at the telephone on the wall again and said, "Okay, I'll come with you."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gao Lishi breathed a sigh of relief. Now, the only danger was the owner of the small restaurant. Si recognized him, but if he could complete the task now, the risk was worthwhile.
He was almost impatient. However, Meizhen stopped a few steps after walking out. Gao Lishi looked down the slope and saw a large black car parked behind her car, with three men and a woman getting out. One of the boys was inspecting the wheels stuck in the mud; he was wearing a sweatshirt with a gold "D" on the front. The girl had also seen Meizhen and waved to her.
Gao Lishi swallowed the curse that was about to escape his lips and asked, "Who are those people?"
"Classmates from school. I forgot they were going home today too. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had to delay your appointment; they would have been able to help me get the car out."
The boy in the sweatshirt carefully sized up Gao Lishi. Gao Lishi pretended not to see him, turned his head and walked to his car with Meizhen, then shook hands with Meizhen and said goodbye.
Cursing under his breath, Gao Lishi drove to Moores.
The Rainbow Hotel was located on the main street of this small town, a dark, dusty building. When Gao Lishi checked in at the hotel counter, the clerk handed him a telegram, saying, "This was sent to you not long ago, Mr. Gao."
Gao Lishi thought: Something must have gone wrong, otherwise Long Feiyun would never have sent him a telegram before he arrived at the hotel. Because this gave him another chance to be noticed; the clerk would definitely remember him.
In the past, if there was even the slightest sign of trouble, Gao Lishi would cancel his mission to be on the safe side. But this time was different; for that money, he had to bite the bullet and go through with it.
Upon entering the room, Gao Lishi immediately opened the telegram. The telegram contained about eleven or twelve sentences, written in the tone of a wife calling her husband, saying that their child was sick. After reading the telegram in one breath, Gao Shili was greatly troubled. It turned out that there was a coded message hidden within the seemingly ordinary sentences.
The message said that Wu Dawei had hired special bodyguards. Who were they? How many were there? The telegram didn't specify. In short, it was clear that Long Feiyun's intimidation operation had been leaked. Gao Shili tore the telegram to pieces and burned it in the ashtray. He thought: I've dealt with even more formidable bodyguards; what could I possibly be afraid of?
Standing by the window, watching the raindrops outside, Gao Shili suddenly felt a strange sensation: he didn't want to kill Meizhen. Why? He couldn't understand it himself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
V.
Gao Shili stayed in Moores for two days, accomplishing nothing. The hotel room walls were covered with rose-patterned wallpaper. Having been bored for so long, by Friday night, Gao Shili had counted every single rose on the four walls—a total of nine thousand three hundred and twelve.
He read six detective novels, taken from the bookshelf in the hotel lounge. He ate six boring meals at the small restaurant on the corner from the Rainbow Hotel. He summoned the hotel's prostitutes, but those vulgar women couldn't interest him. One late night, he drove past the house of his target, Wu Dawei, but it was pitch black and he couldn't see anything.
Aside from these activities, Gao Shili spent two days like a prisoner in jail. It rained all day Friday, and the rain stopped on Saturday, though the weather was still gloomy and damp. Gao Shili waited for night to fall. According to the information he had, Wu Meizhen went out with her boyfriend every Saturday night.
Gao Shili didn't eat dinner that day because his stomach couldn't stand the hard sweet potatoes and rough steak at that small restaurant anymore. He took out a revolver, put on the silencer, placed the gun in a hidden pocket inside his specially tailored jacket, and left the hotel.
Gao Shili walked to the parking lot, drove to an intersection in front of the Wu family's house, stopped, turned off the headlights, turned on the radio, lowered the volume, and waited patiently.
At 8:10, car lights appeared on the street. Gao Shili sat up and saw a white, two-seater sports car speeding towards the large iron gate in front of the Wu family's house. Twenty minutes later, the sports car came out, turned a corner, and headed towards where Gao Shili had stopped. Gao Shili lowered his seat and moved to the side closer to the sidewalk. The sports car brushed past him, and out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of a pretty woman's face, laughing and joking with the young man driving.
As soon as they passed, Gao Shili started the engine and turned the car around. He had just completed the large turn when he saw the headlights in his rearview mirror. Immediately after the sports car, another car drove out of the large iron gate of the Wu family's house.
Gao Shili paused for a moment, realizing his heart was racing, and remembered the doctor's warning to avoid cardiac stimulation. Gao Shili could see that the car was a large black sedan, and he could only make out one person inside. The black car slowed down for a moment before accelerating to catch up with the sports car in front. Gao Shili knew that the driver of that car must be a bodyguard, and that he had already seen his car.
Gao Shili waited until the black car had driven about two blocks before accelerating to catch up. He turned right at the first intersection, then left, entering a street parallel to the one he had just crossed. Gao Shili searched the area but couldn't find any trace of the black car. He finally spotted the white sports car at the last motel, "Baiyang Motel."
The "Baiyang Motel" was a dilapidated two-story building with a row of six identical small bungalows behind it—these were the rooms for car-driving tourists.
Gao Shili circled the row of small and large bungalows, carefully examining them, but apart from the white sports car, the black car he had been following wasn't among the thirty-odd cars parked there.
Gao Shili parked his car and sat smoking for ten minutes, but the black car still hadn't appeared. He felt something was wrong, but he couldn't wait any longer. He patted the revolver in the hidden pocket of his suit jacket, got out of the car, and walked towards the main building of the
Baiyang Hotel. Before going in, he glanced at both sides of the road; there wasn't a single car in sight. The lobby of the Baiyang Hotel was incredibly dim; the only lighting came from a few shaded lamps in the bar and a few lamps on the small tables.
Above the dance floor, a multi-faceted silver ball spun, shimmering. A mediocre five-man band was playing popular music. The dance floor and the surrounding tables were crowded with couples, mostly teenagers who appeared to be barely adults or underage. The damp air was thick with the smells of sweat, perfume, and tobacco.
Gao Shili walked around the music stage, found a stool in the bar, ordered a drink, and began searching for his targets. His keen eyes quickly spotted his prey; the two of them were sitting at the small table closest to one end of the bar.
Mei-zhen had a ribbon tied in her long hair and wore a tight wool sweater, a short skirt, nylon stockings, and high heels. Her boyfriend was a thin college student in a leather jacket; in front of him were three empty glasses and a full glass. Mei-zhen only had a half-full glass in front of her.
Gao Shili glanced around again. At one end of the bar, two young men in leather flight suits, their eyes fixed on the group of girls sitting at the table next to the music stage, were not really interested in the drinks. The bartender was engrossed in a comic book.
Gao Shili picked up his glass to take a sip, but seeing a half-lipstick stain on the rim, he carefully put the glass down and turned back to look at his prey. For some reason, he felt a strange, inexplicable hatred for Mei-zhen's partner. The guy was leaning to one side, talking animatedly, but Mei-zhen just kept shaking her head. Then she stood up, picked up her handbag, and walked down the aisle.
This was the first time Gao Shili had a chance to see Meizhen's figure. Her full, firm breasts stretched taut over her white wool sweater, and her narrow skirt hugged her round, full hips, swaying from side to side. He watched her walk into the restroom.
Just then, Gao Shili caught a glimpse of Meizhen's boyfriend tucking what looked like a hotel key under a napkin on the table; the key was tied with tape.
Gao Shili picked up his wine glass and slowly strolled over, glancing around as he went. Up to this point, he hadn't spotted anyone resembling a bodyguard. Based on his years of experience, he was absolutely certain. If there really was a bodyguard, he would have recognized him immediately.
Gao Shili walked to Meizhen's boyfriend's table and secretly peeked down. The guy was staring intently at his wine glass. A small section of the tape from the key peeked out from under the napkin, and Gao Shili could clearly see a "crane" and a "3".
Soon Meizhen returned, and the young man spoke at length to her again, but Meizhen still shook her head. Later, the young man gave another impassioned speech, patting the key under his napkin. Meizhen stared at the key, silent, then looked at her boyfriend for a long time before nodding slightly and indicating she was going to dance.
This made the young man very excited; he enthusiastically put his arm around her slender waist and led her into the dance floor.
Gao Shili downed his drink in one gulp, his mind made up. He thought the time was almost here.
After the dance, Meizhen returned to her seat.
Gao Shili thought to himself, "You won't be going home tonight. You'll never see the sunlight again."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Six.
Five minutes later, the band took a break, putting down their instruments and filing out through a small door. Meizhen nervously grabbed the key from under her napkin and secretly slipped it into her handbag. Her boyfriend pointed to his watch and said something; she nodded again.
Meizhen picked up her velvet coat from the back of the chair and walked away. The young man stared intently at her round buttocks swaying under her skirt until she disappeared into the darkness. Afterward, a sly smile spread across his face as he contentedly finished the rest of his drink.
The meaning of this pantomime was quite simple and obvious, and as it unfolded, Gao Shili had already devised a temporary plan of action. The first step was to get rid of the young man so he wouldn't get in his way.
He went over and greeted the boy, saying, "Hello."
The pale-faced, half-drunk young man glanced at Gao Shili and said, "You've mistaken me for someone else, friend."
Gao Shili ignored him and raised his voice, "We haven't seen each other in a long time."
Someone at the next table turned around but then turned back. Gao Shili sat down opposite the young man.
The young man looked at Gao Shili with disgust and said, "Are you drunk?"
Gao Shili laughed for a while, then lowered his voice and said to him, "Stand up and come outside with me, or I'll blast a hole through you." He then walked to the young man's side, put an arm around his shoulder, and whispered in his ear, "Move closer. Did you touch me? That's it. It's a handgun. If you know what's good for you, nothing will happen."
The boy stammered, "Who...who..."
Gao Shili said softly, "Stop arguing. I'll give you five more seconds, kid."
The young man struggled to his feet, knocking over a glass in the process. Gao Shili smiled, affectionately putting an arm around his waist, and led him outside, saying, "Don't try anything funny. Pretend we're old friends."
As they passed the bar, the bartender glanced at them, and Gao Shili quickly called out to the young man, "Buddy, you've had way too much to drink this time." As soon as they were outside
, the boy tried to run away. Gao Shili grabbed him, slammed him against the wall, and held him tightly.
The young man stammered, "What do you want? Who...who are you?"
Gao Shili stared at him with cold, ruthless eyes and said, "Don't make a sound, you bookworm. I'm asking you, not the other way around. What's your name?"
"Wang Qun."
"Okay, now I want you to walk over to the trees over there in the parking lot. See them? If you see them, nod. Good! You can do something this simple, right?" "
Of course I can, but what are you going to do with me?"
"I want you to rest for a while. If you don't make a sound, nothing will happen. If you try anything funny, I'll shoot you through the hole, understand?"
Wang Qun bit his lip and remained silent.
Gao Shili frowned and said, "Did you hear what I said? Kid! Do you think I'm joking?"
"No...no."
"Look at me, do I look like I'm joking?"
Wang Qun looked up at his cold eyes, a look of terror on his face, and said, "You...you're serious."
"Fine, then stop talking nonsense and get going."
"You...who exactly are you?"
Gao Shili gritted his teeth and said fiercely, "Kid, if you don't know what's good for you, I'll shoot you to meet Wang."
He looked around; it was quiet, no cars were passing by, and no one was around. He raised his left hand and punched the young man in the cheek, saying, "My pistol has a silencer; it only makes a tiny sound when I fire. If you say another word, I can kill you anytime and no one will hear it, understand?" Wang
Qun said, "Don't hit me, and I won't ask you any more questions."
"Let's go, walk in front of me, don't go too fast."
So the two of them crossed the sandy area of the parking lot one after the other and came to the bushes. Under Gao Shili's threat, Wang Qun led forward into the bushes for about ten steps before stopping.
Gao Shili said, "That's enough, turn around."
After Wang Qun turned around, Gao Shili took two steps forward and asked, "Now I have a few questions for you. Where did Meizhen go?"
"Meizhen? You weren't going to assault her..."
Before he could finish, Gao Shili picked up the barrel of his revolver and struck him on the left cheek, saying, "What else do you want me to do to you before you'll obey?"
"You want to assault Meizhen? Who are you, a pervert or..."
Gao Shili raised his revolver again and struck him hard, causing Wang Qun to stagger back a step.
"Now you believe me, kid? Now listen carefully."
"I...yes, I'll listen carefully."
"Where is Meizhen?"
"In...in the little house behind the Baiyang Hotel." "
In room number three, isn't she?"
"How...how did you know?"
"Never mind how I knew. She's waiting for you in that room, isn't she?"
"Yes."
"You convinced her to agree to meet you tonight, didn't you?" "
Did you?" Gao Shili repeated.
"Yes." "
Alright, kid. Now turn around, it'll be easier for you that way."
"Oh my god, you're not going to..." the kid cried out weakly.
"If you don't behave, I'm really going to kill you."
As soon as Wang Qun turned around, Gao Shili immediately raised his pistol and struck him hard on the back of the head with the butt of the gun. Wang Qun's knees buckled, and he immediately knelt on the ground. Gao Shili stepped forward and knocked again, causing Wang Qun to fall to the ground covered in leaves.
Gao Shili put his pistol back in his pocket and knelt on the leaves. He first unbuttoned Wang Qun's coat, removed his belt, and used it to tie his hands behind his back. Then, he took a handkerchief from Wang Qun's suit, crumpled it into a ball, and stuffed it into his mouth. He then untied his tie and tightly gagged him to prevent the handkerchief from slipping out. As Gao Shili tied the last knot, he suddenly realized something was wrong. But by the time he reached for his pistol and turned around quickly, it was too late.
Standing before him was a tall, hatless man, his back to the light of the Baiyang Hotel sign, only his silhouette visible, his face indistinct.
For about half a second, the shadow remained motionless. Then, he spoke: "Don't move, Gao Shili, or you'll be dead immediately."
Gao Shili's mind immediately raced, trying to recall when and where he had heard this voice before, and who it belonged to.
The dark figure took a step forward. Now, with the hotel lights, he could see more clearly; the man was holding a small pistol.
He slightly shifted his body, and Gao Shili was startled. This slight shift made him recognize the man's face. Yes, it was him. Gao Shili almost wanted to run away, but he couldn't. He could only ask, his throat dry, "Are you Guan Dongren?"
The man smiled cheerfully and said, "That's right, I am."
Gao Shili was speechless for a moment, and could only continue to stare at Guan Dongren. His face was still the same as before: a bullet-shaped pointed head, short hair, curled ears, and an ugly little mouth.
Guan Dongren sneered, "What's wrong, Gao Shili? Why aren't you saying a word? Aren't we old friends?"
"You...you can't possibly be working here anymore!"
"That's right, you guessed it. I'm no longer a Chicago detective."
Guan Dongren's face was filled with hatred as he said, "That was two years ago. The chief wasn't happy with my use of torture to coerce suspects into confessing, so he dismissed me."
Gao Shili asked listlessly, "Wu Dawei hired you?"
"Yes, the guy who paid you must have already told you Wu Dawei hired bodyguards. Your employers are all top-notch, capable people."
"I thought..."
"You thought you'd hire those useless bastards? This is a matter of life and death; of course he'd hire the best bodyguards, especially to guard against someone like you."
"You're the one who drove the black car?"
"Of course. I saw you following me a long time ago. Later, I drove the car onto the side road, turned off the lights, and waited for you. As soon as you arrived in Baiyang, I kept an eye on you. If you wanted to shoot this young man, I would have shot you first. But now the situation is different, and I can take my time."
Guan Dongren paused, then continued, "You just shot Wang Qun, and I just happened to be hired to protect Miss Meizhen and the boy she was traveling with. If I kill you, I'm just following orders; it's my duty, understand?"
"I guess I made a mistake."
"You really did make a mistake, Gao Shili. Damn it, I never thought you'd have such a day."
"I knew you'd noticed me all along?"
Guan Dongren waved the small pistol in his hand and said, "You didn't expect that in such a remote place, someone would know your past, did you?"
Guan Dongren's words were filled with malice and pride. He slightly shifted his grip on the gun and said, "Looks like you're doomed this time, old friend."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VII.
Gao Shili still held the revolver, only the barrel was drooping and the muzzle was pointing at the ground. He could hardly believe what had just happened and was happening was real.
Guan Dongren didn't take any further action immediately; this ruthless retired detective seemed to want to slowly torment Gao Shili like a cat playing with a mouse, rather than rushing to execute him.
"It's been eight or nine years since we last broke up. Look at you, still in that expensive suit, doing quite well, old friend!"
Gao Shili remained silent.
"Are you still a 'hitman,' Gao Shili?"
Gao Shili said angrily, "Of course!"
Guan Dongren's hand, gripping the gun, suddenly made an unnatural little movement, as if his finger had twitched. Gao Shili noticed it. He secretly wondered: Could this be a sign of Guan Dongren's nervousness? If so, he had a glimmer of hope.
Guan Dongren spoke again: "Hmph! Gao Shili, do you want me to tell you how big your hitman position is, how much you're worth?"
Gao Shili said calmly, "Whatever."
"Do you still remember Ah Xiang?" he said with a smug smile.
"Isn't Ah Xiang that little girl from the Jieshi dance troupe?"
Guan Dongren roared, "Don't talk nonsense. You hid Ah Xiang away for two years, and she was still a minor. You think you're so great, don't you? Ah Xiang told me everything about you. She said you're a disgusting old man. She even described how funny you always looked when you sat down and frantically rubbed your handgun..."
"Enough, Lao Guan."
"That's not all. What if I told you that after Ah Xiang abandoned you, she moved in with me? What if I told you that Ah Xiang is already married to me, and now Wu Dawei is paying for her expenses, and she's also living in the Rainbow Hotel in the district? What would you think then?" "Are you bragging?
" Gao Shili said.
"Is that so? Believe it or not."
"How could Ah Xiang be interested in such an ugly devil like you..."
"In fact, it was me she was interested in." Guan Dongren said smugly.
Gao Shili grew angrier the more he thought about it. He remained outwardly calm, but inwardly he was already plotting. He confidently asked, "What are you planning, Lao Guan? Are you going to kill me right here?"
This was a psychological tactic. Guan Dongren hesitated briefly, but that was enough to bolster Gao Shili's confidence.
Guan Dongren said, "I'll release this kid first, then take you back to the Wu family's house. Before you die, Wu Dawei might want to ask you some questions. The Wu family's house is big enough, as you've seen. I can kill you there without anyone knowing. Although the Wu family isn't entirely sure whether to retaliate with force, I can easily persuade them when I get back. Alright, now hand me the gun, Gao Shili, and stand in..."
Before Guan Dongren could finish, Gao Shili said, "Excellent, Lao Guan." In a flash, Gao Shili's pistol, which was originally pointed downwards, was raised without him even raising his arm; he simply used his wrist to raise the muzzle and fired at Guan Dongren from his spot. Guan Dongren reacted quickly
as well; his small pistol fired a shot, almost as loud as Gao Shili's silenced revolver. But by then, Gao Shili had already dodged to the side, and his bullet struck a tree trunk behind him. After the gunshot, Guan Dongren fell. He had been unfortunately hit by Gao Shili's revolver.
When Gao Shili dragged Guan Dongren by the collar into the bushes about ten yards away, Guan Dongren was already dead. Gao Shili picked up some leaves and covered his face.
Wang Qun, lying on the ground nearby, began to groan weakly. Gao Shili cautiously looked towards the parking lot to see if the two low gunshots had alerted anyone. But the rain continued to fall, and he couldn't see anyone. Gao Shili
bent down, struck Wang Qun again with the butt of his gun, and dragged him deeper into the bushes, close to where Guan Dongren had been. Then, he leaned against a tree trunk, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and relaxed his muscles.
Gao Shili had won another round. Long ago, Gao Shili had already learned to use a rapid-fire gun. His marksmanship was swift and accurate, which was the main factor in his success.
A sense of satisfaction welled up in Gao Shili's heart. However, he suddenly remembered what Guan Dongren had said about A Xiang, and immediately made another decision. Gao Shili's plan was: first, kill Meizhen; second, go find A Xiang and teach her a lesson. He estimated that he needed to finish these tasks before midnight. Time was rather tight, only a little over two hours. But with that kid there, and Guan Dongren lying there dead, he had to hurry.
Gao Shili carefully put his revolver into his pocket and then walked to the row of low houses behind the Baiyang Hotel. He hoped that Meizhen wouldn't become suspicious because she had waited so long without her lover arriving.
The word "lover" gave Gao Shili a strange feeling. He didn't want to imagine Meizhen naked in bed with that young man. Gao Shili forced himself to stop thinking wildly, telling himself: Don't worry about Wang Qun anymore. She's just my target.
Thinking and thinking, he had already arrived between room number three and room number four. He looked around, but saw no one. He then gently turned the doorknob of room number three, slipped inside, and quietly closed the door, making a soft creaking sound.
Gao Shili stood in the darkness for a moment, his nose catching the musty smell of wallpaper mixed with the scent of whiskey. Through the cheap sheer curtains of the window at the front of the room, the faint light of the hotel's neon sign shone through. In one corner of the room, a gas stove had a pale blue flame flickering inside.
Now, Gao Shili's eyes were gradually adjusting to the darkness. He saw an almost empty bottle on the bedside table. Suddenly, there was a rustling sound from the bed, and Gao Shili immediately pulled out his revolver. He saw a crystalline, white body turning on the bed.
"Wang Qun, is that you?"
There was no answer.
"Wang Qun, is that you, darling?"
Gao Shili had his finger on the trigger, but after a while, he couldn't pull the bolt. He didn't understand why he didn't take the opportunity to shoot; he just felt a dryness in his throat and the air in the room felt stifling.
Meizhen lay naked on one side of the double bed, the dim light from the window casting a beautiful, alluring pattern on her full breasts. She turned her head to look at him, one hand clutching a nightgown.
She asked again, "Wang Qun, why aren't you saying anything?"
Gao Shili let out a soft "uh" as an answer.
Meizhen said, "I did as you said." She pointed to the wine bottle on the table: "I drank that."
Gao Shili realized she was facing imminent destruction. He wanted to shoot, but the revolver in his hand felt like lead, completely unresponsive. His mouth was parched, but his eyes couldn't leave Meizhen's snow-white, full body.
Meizhen's firm breasts appeared even more beautiful in the shadows, and a glimmer of light shone from her golden hair. With each movement of her body, Gao Shili spat.
After a while, Meizhen raised her hand and said in a soft voice, "Wang Qun, why aren't you coming over?"
Only then did Gao Shili realize that Meizhen was completely drunk, almost unconscious.
"Wang Qun, darling, why aren't you coming? Don't be afraid, I... I'm ready."
Gao Shili felt a lump in his throat, a general discomfort. He hesitated slightly, put his revolver in his pocket, and sat down beside Meizhen. In the dim light, he saw that her eyes were closed.
Meizhen reached out and stroked his hair. Gao Shili also reached out, first placing his hand on her shoulder, then sliding it down to teasingly caress Meizhen's smooth, silky body.
Meizhen's other hand encircled his neck, and she whispered, "Darling, don't be too rough."
"Wang Qun... oh... ah..." In the darkness, only Meizhen's soft moans could be heard.
His eyes seemed to blaze with passion, his blood surging. Both of them had the same intense need, and she, like a ball of fire, threw herself into his arms, trembling as she cried out, "Kiss me! Love me! Love me fiercely!" Their four lips pressed tightly together.
Wu Meizhen's hand moved down, quickly releasing her inexplicably aroused penis, making it even easier for Gao Shili to deal with her. He couldn't help but suck on her nipples, his fingers disappearing into the grass. Wu Meizhen trembled violently, her legs involuntarily parting, making Gao Shili's hand feel as if it were in a hot spring.
"Ah! I want..." she murmured wantonly, her hand caressing the snake's body.
He, too, was overcome with excitement. As he released her swollen nipples, he lifted her beautiful buttocks, and she let out a soft cry. The petite woman then wrapped herself around him like a monkey. His large penis slid in smoothly, and she moaned again
, dazed. Just rushing into the flesh, riding the waves of pleasure! She was so wet and hot. And Gao Shili was so impatient and excited! Dry wood and raging fire, once they touched, they were unstoppable. Her emptiness was instantly dispelled by him. That pleasurable fullness made her involuntarily let out a series of moans that were both painful and pleasurable. Her beautiful legs wrapped around his back.
"Oh...you're so hard!" she cried out, lost in her own world, her lips gripping his shoulder.
His passionate fingers explored every inch of her bouncy skin, every round, full moon. Her body was incredibly supple, especially her most prominent breasts, which resembled a thick, fleshy cushion. Combined with the dense pubic hair, Gao Shili's thrusts were met with a subtle, irresistible rebound, driving him to ecstasy.
Gao Shili, unable to contain his own urges, cried out, "Oh...oh...I'm so happy! I...I'm as happy as an angel!"
With a series of moans, she parted her cherry lips, biting wildly against his shoulder, reaching a climax. Gao Shili, equally unable to restrain himself, yearned for release, a volcanic eruption of desire! Only in this way could his extremely tense nerves relax and unwind. So, without hesitation, he declared, letting the heat of life spray into every excited cell of hers…

VIII.
“How is it you?” Mei-zhen asked as soon as she woke up, “Where did Wang Qun go?”
“Don’t ask.” Gao Shili said, “It’s a long story. Let’s eat something first, and then we’ll escape quickly. Someone wants to kill us.” With that, he got out of bed. Mei-zhen didn’t say anything more. Anyway, she was already Gao Shili’s woman. He pulled up a blind and looked outside.
After night fell, Gao Shili and Mei-zhen cleaned the villa, tidied up the place, and made the bed so that the house looked as if no one had been there since last summer. Before leaving, Mei-zhen put on another fleece shirt as an outer garment and wrapped a floral towel around her head.
Gao Shili asked her, "Do you know where the farm is?"
"Go straight along this road, around the lake, then turn to the opposite side of the lake, and you'll see the farm."
"Okay, let's go that way."
They went around the lake, turned left, and after walking for a while, they indeed saw a farm in the distance. Gao Shili took out his revolver and carefully checked if it was fully loaded.
They passed two houses, each time Meizhen stayed behind to scout ahead, but each time he returned shaking his head, saying, "There are four or five people in the kitchen, let's find a second house!"
When they reached the third house, Gao Shili smiled and returned to tell Meizhen, "This house only has one light on, and there's only a boy about your age inside. Come with me."
They passed through the farm and walked to a dilapidated car. Gao Shili looked at it and said, "No key, what a pity, otherwise things would be much simpler."
They passed through the granary and the back door of the house. Gao Shili saw the door was only an inch or two away. He held his gun, hoping it wasn't bolted. He swiftly jumped over, kicked the door open, and rushed into the kitchen, coldly saying, "If you know what's good for you, don't move, kid."
The boy in the kitchen, who had been sitting and drinking a glass of milk, stood up and slowly raised his hands above his head. The boy didn't show any sign of panic, which made Gao Shili uneasy. Then he realized that the boy was watching Meizhen behind him.
After looking at him for a while, he said, "Oh, I recognize you. You're Wu Dawei's daughter!"
Gao Shili said to Meizhen, "Stop, ignore him." Then he said to the boy, "What's your name?"
"My name is Zhao Yu."
"You live in this house alone, right?"
"No."
Gao Shili took a step forward and said angrily, "Then tell me!"
"Tell me what?"
"Who else lives here?"
"My dad and mom, they're not here right now."
"Whose old car is that behind the house?"
"Mine."
"Can it move? Don't lie, or you'll regret it."
Zhao Yu looked at Meizhen and said, "Of course it can move."
Gao Shili said fiercely, "Look at me. Give me the car keys."
"What's going on? You...you're kidnapping her, or what?"
"Shut up, kid. Give me the keys. Do you want me to shoot you in the face a few times with this gun before I take the keys?"
Zhao Yu's eyes flashed with anger, but he immediately shook his head, took a bunch of keys from his pocket and handed them to Gao Shili, saying, "That square one is it."
Zhao Yu was now staring at Meizhen. Gao Shili noticed a strange, embarrassed expression on her face. He frowned, raised his pistol, and said to Meizhen, "You go out first and wait for me in the car."
Zhao Yu looked at Gao Shili nervously.
Meizhen hesitated and said, "I can help you wake him up." "
I don't want to wake him up, I want to shoot him."
Zhao Yu's throat tightened.
Meizhen ran to Gao Shili in a panic, grabbing his arm and saying, "Why? You didn't need to kill him, did you?"
"Have you forgotten who he is?"
"He knows me, but he doesn't..."
"Shut up, this is my business, you don't need to interfere."
Ignoring his anger, Meizhen continued, "No, I can't let you just kill him like this."
Gao Shili said viciously, "Who is he to you? Why are you so concerned about him?"
"Nonsense, I've never seen him, at the very least I don't remember ever seeing him,"
Zhao Yu interjected. "She's telling the truth. The fact is, everyone here knows Wu Dawei and his daughter."
Gao Shili said to Meizhen, "Let's go out, we don't want to waste any more time."
But Meizhen's hand remained tightly gripping his arm. Gao Shili tried his best to avoid looking at her, instead focusing on Zhao Yu along the barrel of his pistol. Zhao Yu pressed himself stiffly against the refrigerator.
Gao Shili kept reminding himself: I am a "professional killer," and this guy in front of me is just a target. But as he raised his gun to aim, he involuntarily glanced down at Mei-zhen beside him. Her voice echoed in his ear: "You've killed too many. Don't kill him, there's no reason for it."
He cried out, "For God's sake, please stop bothering me!"
Mei-zhen cried as she said, "How could you... kill him for no reason?"
Gao Shili shouted, "What do you mean 'can' or 'can'? My life is in this kid's hands. Yes, my life. Don't you think I should give up all my efforts and leave this kid to tell the police he saw you and me?"
Mei-zhen thought for a moment and said, "Then, take... take him with you. But don't kill him."
"Take him with you? What kind of reason is that?"
"We... we might need him as a hostage or something," she said, using that as an excuse.
Gao Shili was about to yell at her, but then changed his mind. He looked at the terrified Zhao Yu, took a deep breath, and felt a dull ache in his left chest again. He thought to himself: Haven't I been dragged down by her enough? Must I continue to be controlled by her; her face, her lips, her body, her breasts, and her irresistible eyes? Damn it!
Gao Shili gritted his teeth, his finger on the trigger, but he lacked the final, most important resolve.
Finally, after staring at Meizhen for a minute, he said dejectedly, "Young man, turn off the light, then go ahead of us and get in that old car." Zhao Yu silently followed his instructions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IX.
Gao Shili was the last to leave the house. Before leaving, he stood at the door for a while, looking at the starlit night sky, and took a deep breath of the fresh field air. A funny thought suddenly flashed through his mind: he would rest in this quiet environment for the night.
The car door slammed shut, and Gao Shili immediately crossed the yard and went to the car. He felt it was inappropriate to leave Meizhen alone with Zhao Yu. He weighed his current situation: the advantage of keeping Zhao Yu alive was that he could use him as a hostage if necessary, using his life as bargaining chips. The disadvantage was that Zhao Yu might snatch Meizhen away from him. Zhao Yu was a threat to him.
Gao Shili opened the back door of the car, telling Meizhen to switch seats with Zhao Yu. He said to Zhao Yu, "You sit in the front so I can keep an eye on you." Gao Shili then started the engine and drove the car along the route he had just planned.
"I understand why you're involved in this kind of thing," Zhao Yu said softly to Meizhen.
Meizhen replied, "It's better if you don't know..."
Gao Shili immediately interrupted her, "Neither of you are allowed to say a word!"
He was pondering Meizhen's words; did this indicate that she was dissatisfied with what would happen later? His anger rose.
He said to Zhao Yu, "Listen carefully, I will not kill you as she asked, but you are not my honored guest. You are just a hostage. I just want you to sit there quietly, not ask any questions, and not talk loudly."
Zhao Yu said softly, "Okay."
Gao Shili glanced at the fuel gauge on the car indifferently and cursed. He asked, "Is this clock not broken?"
"I don't think so."
"The damn hands are almost at zero. Why didn't you tell me there was no gas in the tank?"
"I forgot, I..."
"Fuck you. How much further can we go? Looks like we don't even have two gallons left."
Zhao Yu licked his lips and said, "We can probably go another mile."
"Ten miles? Two gallons for ten miles?"
Zhao Yu mustered his courage and said, "Not two gallons, we only have one. Look, the needle's dropped even lower. And this car is a huge gas guzzler."
Gao Shili looked at the road and fields ahead, suddenly feeling a sharp pain in his chest, his pulse quickening. He couldn't suppress the tension and despair. Things always have to come to an end; if something went wrong again, his fate would be unimaginable.
Gao Shili made up his mind; the only way now was to make the most of this one gallon of gas until he couldn't go any further, and then figure out what to do next. He drove onto a busy highway. A large truck was approaching from the opposite direction, and the headlights of another vehicle appeared in his rearview mirror. Gao Shili's hands were already sweating.
The road was winding, requiring slow driving. After rounding the last bend and entering a straight section, Gao Shili looked ahead and gasped. The road ahead was flat and straight. However, about a mile ahead, judging from the number of headlights and taillights, there were at least six cars parked together.
Meizhen pushed forward and asked, "What's that?"
"A checkpoint. Looks like we have to turn onto another road."
"Can't we just turn around?"
"No, they'll see us then." He thought to himself that if they couldn't find a side road to turn onto before reaching the checkpoint, things would get unpredictable.
Meizhen said, "Maybe that checkpoint isn't for us. We can try..."
"What if it is for us? Besides, it's definitely targeting us. Is there a broken bridge on this road?" He had barely finished speaking when he glimpsed a "T" sign on the other side of the road, indicating a crossroads ahead. Soon, the crossroads appeared, and Gao Shili immediately drove the car into them. At this point, the car was only about half a mile from the checkpoint. Perhaps they had already been spotted, but this was the only way. Turning back would only cause more trouble; they might even be chased.
It was a very bad dirt road, the surface uneven. Gao Shili had to place the left wheel between his knees and drive with both hands.
From the back seat, Meizhen let out a soft sigh. Gao Shili heard her sigh and wondered: Had his treatment of Zhao Yu angered her? He had relied on her support all along, and it was because of her that he had reached this point. If he lost her now, if she left him and joined forces with Zhao Yu, what would he do?
Thinking this, the car rounded another bend, and a gas station appeared prominently on the side of the road ahead.
Gao Shili said to Zhao Yu, "After I park, you go get gas, and I'll deal with the people at the gas station."
"Okay,"
Meizhen said hurriedly, "You're not going to kill anyone, are you…?"
"I'll decide what to do later," Gao Shili replied arrogantly. However, when he heard Meizhen sigh, he felt a pang of regret. He thought, at this critical moment, did she expect him to be a polite gentleman? But on the other hand, the less he controlled himself, the more he exposed his brutality and cruelty, the more likely he was to drive Meizhen to approach Zhao Yu, or even escape with him...
As the car gradually slowed down, Gao Shili carefully examined the gas station. Next to it was a small shack with only one room, the light on inside. When Gao Shili parked the car beside the gas station, he saw only one person in the shack, a boy younger and thinner than Zhao Yu, wearing a dark green shirt stained with oil. There wasn't a single car outside the gas station.
The boy ran out of the shack when he saw a car approaching. Gao Shili carefully looked around; it was pitch black before gently lifting his revolver.
The boy approached the car and asked Gao Shili, "What do you need, sir?"
Gao Shili raised his pistol, pointed it at the boy's face, and said, "Go stand over there."
The boy obeyed in a panic. Gao Shili got out of the car, nimbly stepped forward, and approached the boy. The boy panicked and covered his head with his hands. Gao Shili pulled his hands away and brought the butt of the gun down heavily on his head. The boy staggered back a step, and Gao Shili struck him again, knocking him unconscious and causing him to fall to the ground.
Gao Shili waved the gun in his hand and ordered Zhao Yu, "Get out and fill up the car. Meizhen, you watch him." Then, he bent down, picked up the boy by the ankle, and dragged him into the small hut. His eyes remained fixed on Zhao Yu so that he could continue to monitor Zhao Yu's movements. He saw Zhao Yu holding the tube and bending over at the back of the car, working.
However, just as he felt smug, thinking he had taught Zhao Yu a lesson, Gao Shili suddenly heard a strange hissing sound. He blinked, trying to guess the source of the hissing sound.
