A talented young man, lustful and greedy, squandered his fortune, broke the precept against lust, and was haunted by remorse.

The poem reads:

"Spoiled by affection, she had no freedom;

she lit the beacon fires at Mount Li to amuse the feudal lords;

knowing only that a smile could topple a kingdom,

she was unaware that the dust of the barbarians filled her jade tower. "

This poem is attributed to a foreign monk. Long ago, King You of Zhou favored a concubine named Bao Si. He tried every means to seduce her, but unable to win her smile, he

suddenly lit the beacon fires at Mount Li, used as signals by the feudal lords. The lords, thinking King You was in trouble, all led their troops to his aid. Upon arriving, however, they found nothing amiss

, and Bao Si laughed heartily. Later, when the Quanrong barbarians invaded, they lit the beacon fires again, but the feudal lords did not come to his aid. The Quanrong then killed King You at the foot of Mount Li.

Also, during the Spring and Autumn period, there was Duke Ling of Chen, who had an affair with Xia Ji, the mother of Xia Zhengshu, and spent his days and nights drinking and making merry at her house. Zhengshu, filled with shame and resentment, shot and killed Duke Ling.

Later, Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty also favored Consort Xiao. To see the splendor of Yangzhou, Ma Shumou was appointed commander, mobilizing a million laborers to dredge the Bian River for over a thousand li

, resulting in the deaths of countless workers. Phoenix-shaped and dragon-shaped warships were built, with palace women dragging them along the banks, their music heard for miles. Later, Yu Zhangji rebelled in Jiangdu, beheading Emperor Yang at the Wu Gongtai.

Then, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, infatuated with the beauty of his concubine Yang Guifei, who was having an affair with An Lushan. When Xuanzong caught them, her hair disheveled and hairpins askew, he became suspicious and banished An Lushan to Yuyang

as a governor. An Lushan, longing for Yang Guifei, rebelled. Xuanzong, helpless, could only flee with his officials to Mashan, where soldiers blocked their path, forcing Yang Guifei to commit suicide

. It was only thanks to Guo Jing's heroic battle that the two capitals were restored.

These officials, all because of their lust, lost their lives and their countries. Now, the ignorant masses should be wary of lust. But what is the point of being wary of lust?

I will now tell you the story of a young man who, because of his inability to abstain from lust and his infatuation with a woman, nearly lost his life and his vast fortune. This incident caused a sensation in Xinqiao Market and

became the subject of a local news story.

It is said that in Lin'an Prefecture during the Song Dynasty, ten li from the city was a place called Hushu, and five li outside the city was a place called Xinqiao. In that market lived a wealthy man named Yun Jin, whose wife, Pan,

had only one son named Yunfa. He married a woman named Jin, and they had a four-year-old grandson. Yun Jin's family was extremely wealthy, lending money and accumulating wealth; indeed, their baskets were full of gold and silver, and their granaries overflowing with grain

. Five li from Xinqiao was a place called Huiqiao, where they built a new house and set up a shop. They had their son, Yunfa, hire a manager to help them open

the shop. The silk and cotton they collected were sold in the shop to weavers in the city. Yunfa was intelligent and handsome, knew a little about etiquette, was practical, and not fond of frivolous pursuits. Therefore

, Yun Jin had no reservations about him. Yunfa went to his shop to sell goods every morning and returned home in the evening. The shop only occupied the storefront; the interior rooms were all empty.

One day, due to family matters, he didn't arrive at the shop until noon. With nothing much to do, he went to the riverbank to relax. Suddenly, he saw two boats moored on the riverbank, carrying many

chests, tables, chairs, and other utensils. Four or five people were carrying these items into the empty rooms of his shop. Three women came aboard the boats: a middle-aged, plump woman; an

old woman; and a young woman, all of whom went inside. Because of these women entering the room, Yunfa was destined to suffer:

his body was like the moon rising over the mountain at dawn, and his life like a lamp burning out at dusk.

Yunfa hurriedly returned and asked the steward, "Who has moved into my house without permission?" The steward replied, "She lives in the city. Due to village duties, she has nowhere to stay for the time being

, so she asked our neighbor, Old Fan, to say that she would stay for two or three days. I was just about to inform him when you, sir, came by." Upon hearing this, Yunfa was about to become angry when the young

woman came out, curtsied, and said, "Sir, please calm down. This is not my business. I was in a hurry and did not come to your residence

to inform you first. Please forgive me. Please allow me to stay for two or three days. I will move out as soon as I find a place. As for the rent, I will pay it according to the rules and there will be no debt." Seeing her youth and beauty, Yunfa's anger

subsided , and he said, "In that case, it is fine for her to stay a few more days. Please make yourself at home." After saying this, the woman went to move her trunks and baskets.

Yunfa felt sorry for her and helped her move a few things as well. Both the plump woman and the young woman said, "No need for you to trouble yourself, sir." Yunfa replied, "I have some free time here,

why not help out?" They were both pleased. That evening, Yunfa returned home and instructed the manager, "Tell the new tenants inside to write a deed for the house."

The manager agreed, and that was another story.

Now, Yunfa returned home without telling his parents about the new tenants. That night, he couldn't stop thinking about the young woman. The next morning, he got up,

changed into his best clothes, and dressed neatly. He had his young servant boy accompany him, and he swaggered into the shop. The eight elders inside, seeing the owner arrive,

invited him in for tea and to sign the deed. Yunfa got up and went in. He saw the young woman, smiling warmly, who greeted him with a deep bow and invited him

to sit down . Yunfa sat down in the middle of the room. The old woman and the plump woman came to greet him and sit with him. There was only one woman sitting there, so Yunfa asked, "What

is your surname , madam? Why are there no men in your household?" The plump woman replied, "My husband's surname is Han. He and my son work for an official in the yamen. They leave early and return late,

so we can't meet due to official duties." After sitting for a while, Yunfa lowered his head and looked at the young woman. This young woman, with her beautiful eyes, looked at Yunfa and said, "May I ask, sir, how old are you

?" Yunfa replied, "I've wasted twenty-four years. And you ask, madam, how old are you?" The young woman smiled and said, "We met by chance, sir. I am also twenty-four.

I moved from the city and met you by chance. We are the same age, so it's truly fate that brought us together from afar." The old woman and the plump woman, seeing this, made an excuse

and got up , leaving only the two of them sitting opposite each other. The young woman then began to use flirtatious words to seduce Yunfa. Although Yunfa loved her, he was also horrified, thinking to himself, "

She's from a good family, and they let her stay. Who would have thought she'd turn out to be like this?" Just as he was about to turn and leave, the young woman came over and sat down beside him, acting coquettishly

, saying, "My lord, take off the gold hairpin in your hair, let me take a look." Yunfa took off his hat and was about to remove it when the young woman pressed down on his hair

with one hand , removed the gold hairpin with the other, and stood up, saying, "My lord, let's go upstairs and talk for a bit." As she spoke, she

went straight upstairs. At this moment, Yunfa's heart was moved, and he couldn't restrain himself, so he followed her upstairs, asking for the hairpin back, calling out, "My lady, give me back my hairpin. I have something to attend to at home and

must go back." The woman said, "We are destined to be together from a previous life. Don't pretend to be honest and wish to share your bed." Yunfa said, "I can't!

It wouldn't look good if people found out." He stopped, intending to go downstairs. But the woman exuded a thousand allurees, turning around to embrace Yunfa, her delicate

hands reaching for his trousers. At that moment, even the most hardened heart couldn't resist. Yunfa, his passion blazing, took his hand and went to bed with him, making love.

In an instant, the passion subsided, and the two rose to sit close together. Yunfa, both surprised and delighted, asked, "What's your name, sister?" The woman replied, "My surname is Zhang..."

"My name is Saijin. May I ask what business you engage in, sir?" Yunfa replied, "My parents only gave birth to me. My family sells silk and lends money; we are well-known wealthy people in Xinqiao Market.

It turned out that this woman and her family were a clandestine brothel, also known as a private den. They had no other business; they relied solely on this ledger to make a living. The old woman was the fat

woman 's mother, and Saijin was the fat woman's daughter. Previously, the fat woman had also married into a good family, but because her husband had no other means of livelihood, she had no choice but to engage in

this kind of business. Saijin was beautiful from a young age and could read and write. She had already married, but because she imitated her mother, she engaged in such activities at her husband's house and was sent back to her parents' home by

her husband . Coincidentally, the fat woman was now nearly fifty years old and widowed. Her daughter had taken over her business, so she simply continued in this line of work.

Originally living in the city, she panicked after being reported for this affair and moved here to hide. Unexpectedly, Yunfa stumbled into her trap. Everything was arranged, and she was forced to

enter, leaving no choice but to fall in. Why were there no men? Whenever someone went to her house, her father and son would avoid them. This woman, greedy for her convenience

, had ensnared countless men.

At that time, Saijin said, "We moved here in a hurry and lack travel expenses. Sir, we have five taels of silver to lend you; please don't refuse." Yunfa agreed, got up, and straightened

his clothes. Saijin returned the gold hairpin, and the two went downstairs and sat in the study. Yunfa thought to himself, "If I linger here, the neighbors outside might gossip."

After drinking another cup of tea, he was about to get up when Saijin invited him to stay for lunch. Yunfa said, "I've been delayed long enough; I won't eat. I'll bring you the silver in a little while." Saijin said

, "I've prepared some food and wine for the afternoon; please don't refuse, sir." Having said this, Yunfa went to the shop. Several neighbors came over and teased, "

Congratulations, !" Yun blushed and said, "What's the matter? What's there to celebrate?" It turned out that the neighbors outside had seen Yun go inside. The house was a two-room, six

-oar building. Sai Jin only occupied one room as a room, while the other room, which was the silk shop, was empty. Some busybodies, seeing that Yun didn't come out, had been peeking

through the cracks in the wall of the empty room. They had all seen him clearly when he entered the shop. Seeing his blushing face and stubbornness, the one who had seen him first said, "You're still being

lazy! What are you going upstairs to do after taking off your gold hairpin?" Yun was speechless at his words. He made an excuse, got up, and left the shop to ask his maternal uncle Pan for

lunch.

He strolled to the shop in front of the shop, borrowed a steelyard, weighed out two ounces of the silver he had for buying silk, and put it in his sleeve. He sat idly for a while, waiting until half the afternoon before

returning to the shop. The head steward said, "The people inside were just inviting you to drink." Just then, the Eighth Elder came out and said, "Sir, where have you been lounging around? I've been searching everywhere for

you . We've prepared a special feast and wine at home, only requesting your company, Manager. There are no other guests. Please come in quickly." Yunfa and the Manager went to the pavilion and saw that

the table was already neatly arranged. Saijin invited Yunfa to sit at the head of the table, with the Manager at the side and Saijin facing upwards. After everyone was seated, the Eighth Elder poured wine.

After a few cups of wine and some dishes of food and fruit, the Manager, understanding the situation, excused himself, saying, "I've been embezzling a lot these past few years. It's getting late, I need to go tidy up the shop." He then left.

Yunfa, who was not a heavy drinker, found it amusing that only a woman accompanied him after the Manager left, and began to drink heartily. After drinking more than ten cups, knowing he was too drunk,

he handed the silver from his sleeve to Saijin, then rose and took her hand, saying, "I have something to tell you. The neighbors all know what I did today, and many have come to beat and harass me. What will happen if my parents

find ? Sister, do as I say, find a quiet place to live, and I will take care of you often, how about that?" Saijin said, "That's right,

I'll discuss it with my mother." Having said that, she inevitably had to do some more odd jobs. Yunfa took his leave, instructing, "I won't come back this time. Once you find a place

, tell Eighth Elder to inform me, and I'll come to see you off." Having said this, Yunfa left the shop, instructed the manager to remember him, and went straight home. Saijin

, after seeing Yunfa off, explained the relocation to her parents in detail. That night, they each rested peacefully. The next morning, the plump woman instructed Eighth Elder to quietly

inquire about the neighbors' news. After a while, the Eighth Elder returned home crying, "The neighbors are gossiping so badly; this is no place to live." The plump woman said,

"I was bothered in the city and had no choice but to move here. I was hoping to find a good place to settle down, but who would have thought I'd run into such bad neighbors." She sighed and then told

her husband to go find a house.

Meanwhile, Yunfa, after returning home that day, fearing gossip, kept it a secret from his parents, claiming he wasn't feeling well, and didn't go to the shop. The manager sold the goods himself. Saijin, at home,

again sent the Eighth Elder to attract old customers. At first, the neighbor only knew Yunfa and, fearing trouble from his son, was hesitant to visit. But after seeing a

steady stream of customers, he realized it was a large business. One of the troublemakers said, "We are all good families, how can we tolerate such infighting? As the saying goes, 'Those who are near traitors are near

killers.' If a fight breaks out and someone is injured or killed, it will also harm the neighbors. Let's sound the gong and drive them away!" The eight elders heard this and went inside to tell their

families . Hearing this, the fat woman, feeling utterly humiliated, said to her mother, "You're so old, who are you afraid of? Why don't you go to the door and yell at those short-lived, gossipy

bastards?" The old woman indeed went to the door and yelled, "Which gossipy bastard is spouting nonsense here? If he dares to answer me, I'll risk my

old life to befriend him! Which family doesn't have relatives and friends? How dare you speak ill of others and gossip behind their backs? What kind of logic is that?" At that moment, the neighbors heard this and

said, "That cunning old dog! She doesn't talk about what she does, yet she comes to bully and curse her neighbors!" Among them was Shen Yilang, who ran a general store,

who was about to confront the old woman when Zhang Yiming, a more sensible man, stopped him, saying, "Let her be! Don't argue with this dying woman. We'll get rid of her sooner or later." The old woman cursed a few more times, and seeing

that no one paid her any attention, she went inside. Then the neighbors came to the manager and said, "You didn't understand why this family came to stay, and now you're suffering because of them. They

don't even talk about their own family's affairs, but instead have their old woman yelling and cursing outside the door! You heard it all. Tomorrow we'll go to your master's house and tell Lord Yun, and see what you do then!"

The manager hurriedly replied, "Please calm down, everyone. Don't say anything. We'll let them go sooner or later." After saying this, the neighbors left. The manager then went inside and

said to the woman beside him, "You two quickly find a place to move, don't bother me! Looking at your appearance, it's not a pleasant place for you to live." The plump woman said, "No need to tell me,

I've already found a house in the city, I'll move sooner or later." The plump woman then secretly told the eight elders to inform Lord Yun. She also instructed them not to let his parents know. The eight elders agreed and went to

Xinqiao Market, found Lord Yun's house, and waited at the opposite door. Before long, Yunfa came out and saw the Eighth Elder. He quickly led him to another house and asked, "

What brings you here?" The Eighth Elder said, "My family is moving to the Youyi Camp in the city, to the south of Yangmaozhai Hengqiao Street. They asked me to inform you." Yunfa said, "Is that so?"

"Very well! I'll definitely come to see you off tomorrow." The old man said his goodbyes and left.

The next day, around midnight, Yunfa arrived at the upper shop in Huiqiao Market and settled in. The manager calculated his daily earnings from selling silk, then went inside to chat with Saijin and her son

. He then took out a coin from his pocket and said, "This is 20 taels of silver to help you with moving expenses. I'll come to see you again later." Saijin accepted it, and the mother and son

thanked him profusely. Yunfa got up and looked around, seeing that all the chests and belongings had been unloaded from the boat. Saijin asked, "Sir, when will you come to see me after I leave?"

Yunfa replied, "I need to go home and do acupuncture on a few acupoints, as I do every year. About half a month later, I'll come to visit." Saijin and her son shed tears and bid farewell to Yunfa.

It was truly a case of:

if one place doesn't keep you, another will.

Now, Yunfa suffered from a summer ailment; every hot summer, he would feel weak and his appearance would become gaunt. It was early June, so a doctor was consulted to perform acupuncture on

several acupoints on his back. He stayed home to recuperate and could not go out. Although he missed Saijin, he had to put it aside.

Saijin had moved to Hengqiao Street on May 17th, but the street was full of military families and not a place for ordinary people. It was also remote and secluded, so no one usually

went there. The fat woman said to Saijin, "That day, Young Master Yun promised to come in half a month, but a month has passed and he hasn't come yet." Saijin said, "Could he be ill?

Or did he say he was going to have acupuncture? I guess he's avoiding the heat." So she discussed it with her mother and asked the Eighth Elder to buy two pig stomachs, grind them clean, stuff them with glutinous rice and lotus seeds,

and cook them thoroughly. Saijin then wrote a letter on a seal: "

Your humble concubine Saijin bows again, respectfully informing my beloved Master Yun:

Since parting from you, I have missed you dearly. I had promised to meet you, but you did not come. Your acupuncture is painful, and I am restless and unable to come in your place." " I respectfully present two

pig stomachs as a token of my respect and greetings. I hope you will accept them with a smile.

" After writing this, he folded it into a letter and sealed it. He put the pig stomachs in a box and instructed the Eighth Elder, "Go to his shop and when you see Young Master Yun, give this to him personally

." The Eighth Elder carried the box and the letter, walked out of Wulin Gate, went to the shop outside Huiqiao Market, looked inside but did not see Young Master Yun, so he went straight to Xinqiao Market.

Yun Fa was sitting at the door when he saw his young servant boy come out. The Eighth Elder pulled the boy to a secluded place and said, "I have come to see your husband and speak with him. Could you inform him

?" The boy then turned and went inside. After a short while, Yun Fa came out, and the Eighth Elder hurriedly bowed and said, "My lord, I am pleased that you are in good health." Yun Fa said, "Good grandfather

, what is in your box?" The Eighth Elder immediately understood his purpose. Yunfa then led him to a restaurant, and after they sat down, asked, "Are you doing well where you've moved?" The Eighth

Elder replied, "Very well." He then took out an envelope from his bosom and handed it to Yunfa. Yunfa took it, looked at it, and hid it in his sleeve. He opened a box, took out a belly,

and asked the wine server to cut it into a dish, and ordered two pots of wine to be heated. Yunfa also bought an invitation card, asked for pen and ink, and while drinking with the Eighth Elder, wrote a reply. After finishing

the wine, he took out a silver ingot from his side, about three taels, and handed it to the Eighth Elder, saying, "Please give my regards to my sister. I will definitely come to visit in a day or two.

This silver is for your travel expenses." The Eighth Elder accepted it, got up, and went downstairs. He arrived home late that night and gave the silver and the letter to Saijin. When Saijin opened it, it read: "

Fanfa bows respectfully to my beloved Zhang Saijin:

I have never forgotten your kindness in our previous meeting." I was about to attend the meeting, but due to my illness caused by the fire, I had to break my promise. I am deeply grateful for the generous gift of this delicious meal. Our meeting will take place within two

days. This small gift is a token of my gratitude; please accept it. Yunfa bows again.

After reading this, the mother and son were delighted and will not elaborate further.

Now, Yunfa took a pig's stomach from the inn and returned home. He quietly went to his bedroom and said to his wife, "This cooked stomach was given to

me by a trusted clerk." That night, he and his wife ate the cooked stomach in their room, without letting his parents know.

Two days later, Yunfa got up early and told his parents he was going to check the shop. He planned to ride in a sedan chair, with Shouzhong carrying an umbrella and following him. But this trip would

cost Saijin her life. "

A beautiful young woman of sixteen, so delicate,

yet she wields a sword to slay foolish men;

though no head falls,

her marrow is drained in secret."

Yunfa got into the sedan chair and arrived at Huiqiao Market early. He entered the shop and met the manager. Yunfa, preoccupied with Saijin, sat for a while before rising and instructing the steward,

"I'm going into town to collect some debts from the merchants, then I'll return to settle your accounts." The steward knew where he was going but dared not stop him, only saying, "Sir,

your health has just recovered; you shouldn't wander aimlessly, lest you afflict yourself with another illness." Yunfa ignored him and went straight to his sedan chair. On the way, he instructed the sedan chair bearers to enter through Yinshan Gate, proceed to Yangmao Village

, and then to Nanheng Bridge, inquiring about the Zhang family who had moved from Hushi. Following the shop's directions, Shoutong went to knock on the door. Eight elders came out to open the door, and upon seeing Yunfa, hurriedly sent someone to inform Saijin

, who, along with her son, came to greet him. Yunfa alighted from the sedan chair and said, "It's rare to see such an honored guest; what brings you here today?" Yunfa was delighted. They sat down inside and reminisced about their time apart.

After tea, Saijin said, "Sir, please see my bedroom." Yunfa then led her upstairs to sit down. The two exchanged sweet nothings, then arranged for wine and food, and drank

together . Yunfa's passion burned like fire, and they embraced and went to bed. Afterwards, they got up, washed their hands, drank more wine, and drank several more times. Yunfa had been abstaining from sex for a month due to acupuncture at home,

but now that he saw Saijin, how could he let it end after just one time? Yunfa was also unable to resist; his passion rekindled, and he couldn't get an erection. He pulled Saijin to bed, and they made love again.

It was just as the saying goes:

too much of a good thing can cause illness, and too much pleasure can lead to disaster.

Afterwards, Yunfa felt his mind was scattered and he was extremely sleepy, so he lay down on the bed and fell asleep. Saijin also slept with him.

Now, as soon as Yunfa fell asleep and closed his eyes, he heard someone call out, "Young Master Yun, you're sleeping so soundly!" Yunfa looked and saw a fat monk. Wearing an old, worn-out robe

and barefoot in shoes, with a yellow silk sash around his waist, the monk addressed Yunfa, saying, "This humble monk is Abbot Shuiyue of Sangye Temple. Having lost my disciple, I have come to persuade you, sir, to renounce worldly

life and become a monk. How about becoming my disciple?" Yunfa replied, "You monk, you have no sense! My parents are over fifty and only have me as their child. How can I become a monk?

" The monk said, "You have no choice but to become a monk. If you indulge in worldly pleasures, you will surely die young. As I say, come with me." Yunfa said, "Nonsense! This is a woman's

bedroom . How dare you come here?" The monk glared and shouted, "Are you coming or not?" Yunfa also cursed, "You bald donkey, you have no sense!

Why do you keep bothering me?" The monk was furious and grabbed Yunfa, pulling him away. When they reached the stairs, Yunfa cried out in protest, but the monk pushed him forcefully, sending him tumbling down the stairs. He

suddenly awoke with a start, covered in a cold sweat. When Yunfa opened his eyes, Saijin was still asleep, which surprised him. Saijin also woke up and said, "My lord slept well, so I'll rest now. We'll go tomorrow morning."

"Enough!" Yunfa said. "My parents are worried about me at home. I must go back and come another day." Saijin looked closely at Yunfa and saw that he looked very unwell, so she dared not insist that he stay. Yunfa went

downstairs, thinking about his dream, and felt a chill run down his spine. So he bid farewell to Saijin and her son and hurried away in his sedan chair. As evening approached, his stomach began to hurt more and more, and he could hardly bear it. At this moment,

he felt sorry for himself and just wanted to get home, so he told the sedan chair bearers to hurry.

When he arrived at his own door, the pain became unbearable. He got out of the sedan chair and went inside, rushing upstairs to sit on the toilet to defecate. He would have waves of pain and then burst into tears, and what came out was all bloody water

. When he got to bed, he felt dizzy and lightheaded, his limbs were weak, and his whole body ached. Yunjin saw her son looking pale and ran upstairs. She was shocked and also went upstairs to ask,

"What's wrong?" Yunfa pretended that he had drunk too much at the housekeeper's house, and after sleeping, he was thirsty and drank cold water, which caused his stomach pain and diarrhea. Before he could finish speaking, he clenched his teeth, shivered,

and broke out in a cold sweat, his body burning hot. Yun Jin hurriedly went downstairs to fetch a doctor. The doctor said, "His pulse is about to stop; this illness is difficult to cure." Yun Jin pleaded again, and the doctor

said , "This illness is not due to dryness or diarrhea, but rather excessive sexual activity that has depleted his vital energy, a condition of yang deficiency, which is generally not good. I will prescribe a dose of medicine to help him regain his vital energy. If

his fever subsides and his pulse returns after taking the medicine, then there is hope, and I will come back to treat him." He then took the medicine and left. His parents questioned him again, but Yun Fa remained silent. Around midnight, he took

the medicine and lay down on his pillow. Suddenly, the monk he had dreamed of during the day appeared again, standing by the bed and calling out, "Yun Fa, why are you forcing yourself to stay awake? You might as well come with me!" Yun Fa

did not respond , and the monk, without further ado, put a yellow silk strip around Yun Fa's neck, grabbed him, and pulled him away. Yun Fa grabbed the bed, cried out, and woke up with a start—it was another

dream. When he opened his eyes, his parents and wife were before him. His parents asked, "Why did you wake up so suddenly, son?" Yunfa felt his mind was scattered and knew he couldn't hold on any longer, so
