My stunningly beautiful female boss at 29 (37-41)

37.
An Xiaomin shed tears, choking back sobs, "Do you know what happened to me the day you left without saying goodbye twenty-three years ago, and in the days that followed?"
Under her resentful gaze, I was startled, staring blankly at her, my thoughts drifting back to those heartbreaking days.
That summer when I was eighteen, I decided to go to Wuhan with my seventh brother to try my luck in the underworld.
The night before I left, An Xiaomin, who was on summer vacation, came to the small house my parents had left me. I had already moved out of Uncle An's house for some time.
Although An Xiaomin didn't know I was going to Wuhan, she knew I was leaving Wanzhou the next day, not knowing when I would return.
An Xiaomin cried and said to me, "Brother Xingyan, take me with you! Wherever you go, I want to be with you. I don't want to be separated from you."
I cried too, saying, "Minmin, you've just started high school. Your grades are excellent. You'll definitely get into a prestigious university and have a bright future. If you leave with me now, everything will be over."
"I don't want to go to a prestigious university, I don't care about my future, I just want to be with you..."
An Xiaomin cried uncontrollably. My heart shattered into pieces, and I really wanted to take her with me. I told her I was going out to work, and it would be very hard. She said she wasn't afraid of hardship, as long as she could be with me, she wouldn't mind any suffering.
"Minmin, if you leave like this, Uncle An will be very sad. Don't you know how much he expects of you?"
"It's okay, Xingyan-gege, let's work hard together, and when we've built our careers, we can come back to see Dad. He won't blame us then." She smiled at me while crying.
At that moment, I decided to disregard everything. "Okay, I'll take you with me."
"Really? You can't lie to me!" Her tearful eyes were filled with joy.
"Yes, really, I'm not lying to you." I wiped away her tears and nodded solemnly.
She burst into tears of joy and threw herself into my arms. That night, a young couple in love made love for the first time. It was our first time, and it was unforgettable for both of us.
Afterwards, I told An Xiaomin to secretly pack her bags at home and meet me at the long-distance bus station the next morning, and not to let anyone know.
But that night, I changed my mind. Because doing so would undoubtedly ruin An Xiaomin's life. Uncle An had been so good to me, how could I hurt his heart?
The next day, just as dawn broke, I went to the doors of the An and Yang families, kowtowed three times, and bid them farewell with tears in my eyes. Then I found Seventh Brother and took a taxi with him to the passenger terminal.
Seventh Brother asked why I changed to taking a boat. I said the news had leaked, and the family that adopted me was blocking my way at the long-distance bus station.
Halfway there, I told the driver to turn around and go to the long-distance bus station. Seventh Brother was puzzled and asked me what I was doing now. I said don't worry about it.
When we arrived at the long-distance bus station, I sat in the car and silently looked at An Xiaomin, who was waiting for me with her luggage. I will never forget her longing eyes.
My tears immediately fell, and I almost got out of the car, ran over, pulled her into the car, and took her to Wuhan.
Seventh Brother said, "This girl is fucking hot. Why don't we take her with us? Maybe she can even help us make some money." I glared at Seventh Brother fiercely, tears streaming down my face, and told the driver to drive away.
For the next twenty-three years, I recalled that scene countless times in the dead of night, each time my heart ached and tears flowed uncontrollably.
"That day, I waited there for you, and waited and waited, but you never came. I told myself, my Xingyan brother will come, he won't lie to me..."
Listening to An Xiaomin's words now, I felt as if I were back that morning. Tears silently rolled down my cheeks.
“But I waited all day, from morning till night, even the long-distance bus station was closed, and I still didn’t see you…”
An Xiaomin said, tears streaming down her face. “Later, it started raining heavily, and I walked alone in the rain with my luggage, completely soaked. I walked and cried in the rain, until I squatted down on the ground…”
Her tearful eyes looked at me. “Where were you then, Xingyan brother?”
I was speechless, only able to weep, An Xiaomin’s voice still echoing in my ears. “That night, I squatted on the ground and cried for a long time, until my dad rode his bicycle to my side in the rain. Because I hadn’t been home all day, he thought I was with you, so he went to your house, but found you weren’t there either. That’s when he realized that we might have eloped.”
Hearing this, I suddenly understood. It turned out that Uncle An had known about my love for An Xiaomin all those years ago, but in the past twenty-three years, he had not only never blamed me, but still missed me. At this moment, I felt even more guilty.
“Not long after that day, I found out I was pregnant.”
Hearing Ahn Hyo-min’s words, I stared at her in astonishment.
“I was terrified and didn’t dare tell anyone. I wanted to go to the hospital for an abortion, but I was still a minor and couldn’t do it alone. So, I could only go to those private clinics in the back alleys…”
Ahn Hyo-min kept crying as she recounted the hardships of that time, “I was afraid of being discovered, and I was extremely shy. Several times I stood far away, watching the doors of the private clinics, but I didn’t dare to step inside. At that time, I felt so helpless, and I hated you so much…”
She sobbed again as she spoke. I didn’t know what to say to her, so I just cried.
An Xiaomin stopped crying, sobbed for a moment, and said, "Fortunately, I finally mustered up the courage to go in and managed to get rid of the child..."
"After I got into university, Yang Yifan confessed his feelings to me, but I rejected him. Because I can't forget you. Even though you've left me, my heart is still full of you and can't hold any other man."
"Until I was almost finished with my master's degree, my dad said to me, 'Forget Xingyan, right? Yifan loves you very much and is very ambitious. He will make you happy.'"
"I asked my dad, 'Dad, do you want me to marry Yifan?' My dad said, 'Since you were little, I've hoped you would become the wife of either Xingyan or Yifan. Now Xingyan is gone, and he may never come back. I don't want you to keep waiting for someone who will never return.'"
“I married Yifan right after graduating with my master’s degree, and we soon had a son. Because I gave you my virginity and was pregnant with your child, I told myself from the moment I married him that I would treat Yifan well for the rest of my life. I did keep that promise, but I could never forget you, I never forgot you. So Yifan’s infidelity has its reasons. What man can bear to have his wife’s heart filled with another man?”
“Yifan…cheated?” I asked in surprise.
An Xiaomin gave a bitter smile. "Yes! He had a daughter with one of his female assistants..."
Under my astonished gaze, she continued, "If it weren't for both our parents and Yang Anyi, I would have already taken the evidence of his infidelity to court and filed for divorce. We've been separated for over six months now."
She looked at me with tears in her eyes. "Just when I thought I'd never see you again, you suddenly came back after twenty-three years..."
Tears streamed down her face as she choked out, "Why did you come back? Just to torment me? Today, when I saw you and Meimei walking in hand in hand, when I heard you were together, do you know how much it hurt me? Meimei loves you, and I love you too! I've loved you for over twenty years, and that has never changed. Yet you appear before me with another woman, saying you're in love, that you're together. Don't you think that's too cruel?"
“I’ve always been filial to my parents, loved my younger brother and sister, and after getting married, I devoted myself to my husband and children. I’ve hardly ever lived for myself…”
She cried, pointing to her heart, looking at me with teary eyes, “Why is it that I’m the older sister and she’s the younger sister? Why should I bear all this? Why should I give in to her?”
I wiped away my tears and said, “Minmin, don’t be like this… It’s all fate’s arrangement. After I reunited with Meimei, I heard that you married Yifan and had a child. I…”
I choked up, “I was also very sad, but we can’t escape fate…”
After a moment of silence, I said again, “Actually, that day, I went to the long-distance bus station…”
An Xiaomin looked up, staring at me in surprise.

38.
"I was in a taxi, about to go to the passenger terminal with Brother Qi to catch a boat, but we turned around and drove to the long-distance bus station halfway there. I saw you standing outside the station, waiting for me..."
I said, sobbing uncontrollably, and continued, "But I couldn't! I couldn't take you with me; that would ruin your life."
An Xiaomin gently shook her head, tears streaming down her face, and said, "You're wrong. My greatest wish in this life is to be with you. Compared to that, I don't care about anything I have now—a professorship, a doctoral supervisor position, real estate company shares—I don't care about any of it, do you understand?"
I said excitedly, "But do you know what Brother Qi and I went to Wuhan for? We went there to join the underworld!"
She looked at me, tears welling up in her eyes again. I continued, “In Wuhan, we did everything – guarding brothels, fighting for territory, collecting protection money, street brawls. We didn’t even know if we’d see the sun rise tomorrow. Could I let you live that kind of life with me?”
“Later, Seventh Brother was stabbed to death with a watermelon knife in a brawl. I was lucky; I wasn’t hurt, nor was I caught by the police. I escaped to Shanghai…”
“Even in those days, I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I thought about you every single day. I didn’t know if I’d ever see you again. But the thought that as long as you had a bright future, got into a good university, and went on to graduate school, I didn’t care what happened to me. Even if I were beaten to death in the street, imprisoned, or even executed, as long as you were alright, my life would be worthwhile.”
Recalling the past, I couldn’t stop crying. An Xiaomin, tears streaming down her face, cupped my face and wiped away my tears, sobbing, "But why did you have to leave back then?"
I stopped crying and said, "I don't know why I left either. For so many years, I've been asking myself this question. Rather than for the harmony and peace of both families, it was more about escaping my past, escaping that history. So, when I participated in gang fights, I was always at the forefront, always incredibly ruthless, because subconsciously, I either killed the other person or was killed by them, and that would be a relief."
She looked at me for a long time, then hugged me and sobbed, "Xingyan, God has been so unfair to you..." After
crying for a while, she looked up, her eyes blurry with tears, gazing at me. I looked back at her, our gazes gradually becoming hazy, our lips drawing closer...
An Xiaomin suddenly pushed me away, looking at the windshield, and said, "Let's do this? Let's be family for the rest of our lives, like brother and sister..." As
she spoke, she looked at me, "Take good care of Meimei, love her well, okay?"
“Minmin, I…”
she interrupted me, “You go first, I’ll stay a little longer.”
I kept looking at her, my heart aching. She suddenly shouted, “Go!”
I had no choice but to open the car door and get out. As I left, I saw her sobbing, her head resting on the steering wheel. I didn’t
expect that Yang Yifan was driving by slowly in his Land Rover, looking at me with a gloomy gaze.
Walking on the path in the community, my heart was heavy. I never imagined that my departure would cause An Xiaomin so much harm, making her pregnant and having an abortion at such a young age, marrying someone she didn’t love, and suffering for twenty-three years.
The greatest pain a woman could endure was borne by her during those years. Thinking of this, I shed tears again.
When I got home, Yang Yifan was already there. After a while, he called me to the balcony, saying he had something to say to me.
Once on the terrace, Yang Yifan said in a low but impolite voice, "Stay away from my wife."
I looked at him for a moment, then said in a deep voice, "No problem, I'm leaving tomorrow and won't be coming back."
He nodded, staring coldly at me, "I hope you keep your word."
At this moment, everyone in the house looked at us, but they couldn't hear what we were saying. I stared at him and said, "I will, but I also want to remind you..."
Under Yang Yifan's gaze, I continued, "If you really love Minmin, treat her well and don't hurt her anymore. Otherwise, please let go."
He sneered, "What business is it of yours what we two have to do with each other?"
I looked away, sighed, and then looked at him again, "Although we've never gotten along, Minmin is someone we've protected since she was little, so... take care of yourself."
After I finished speaking, I turned and walked into the house. He said softly but clearly behind me, "Is it worth it for such a used woman?"
My blood rushed to my head, and I turned around to stare at him, "What did you say?"
Yang Yifan met my gaze and said in a voice only I could hear, "An Xiaomin slept with you when she was a teenager. Such a frivolous woman, in all these years since you left, hasn't she slept with any other man? Maybe more than one?"
I punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground. The people in the house gasped in surprise.
Aunt Jiang rushed out first, supporting Yang Yifan and shouting at me, "Xingyan, why did you hit him? Are you crazy?"
An Xiaomei also came over and grabbed me, anxiously saying, "Brother Xingyan, what's wrong with you?"
I pointed at Yang Yifan on the ground and shouted angrily, "She's your wife! How could you say that to her, insult her reputation like that? Are you even human?"
Uncle An shouted, "Xingyan, calm down!"
I had no choice but to shut up, glaring fiercely at Yang Yifan. He stood up and pointed at me, saying, "This man is crazy, he's really crazy."
"Yang Yifan, shut up!" Uncle Yang said sternly.
Aunt Jiang panicked and shouted at her husband, "Old man, what's wrong with you? This time, it was Xingyan who hit Yifan, we all saw it."
"Yes! Xingyan, no matter what, you can't hit someone!" Uncle An said, frowning.
Just as things were getting chaotic, An Xiaomin came to the terrace and asked in surprise, "What happened?"
"Xingyan hit Yifan," Aunt Jiang immediately complained to her daughter-in-law.
An Xiaomin glanced at me, walked over to her husband, gently stroked his face, and asked, "Are you alright?" "
I'm fine..." Yang Yifan replied calmly.
"How can you be fine? You're bleeding..." Aunt Jiang said with concern, giving me a reproachful look.
"Mom..." An Xiaomin patted her mother-in-law's arm, signaling her to calm down.
She walked over to me and asked coldly, "Why did you hit him?"
I said, "Ask him yourself."
An Xiaomin then looked at Yang Yifan, and everyone turned to look at him. Yang Yifan said to me, "Xingyan, I know you've had a tough twenty years, you've suffered a lot, we all know that. But you can't keep taking it out on others, can you? That's not right..."
I knew I'd fallen for his trick, and with no way to defend myself, I could only close my eyes.
Yang Yifan continued, "What I said to you just now was entirely out of concern for you, hoping you could have a stable job. I didn't mean to look down on you, much less insult you."
An Xiaomin looked at me coldly, "You should leave. Please leave my house."
I was taken aback and said, "You know what he just said..."
An Xiaomin interrupted me sharply, "Chen Xingyan, what you've experienced over the past twenty years isn't our fault. Neither the An family nor the Yang family has wronged you, and no one here has wronged you."
“Sister…”
An Xiaomei took my arm, about to defend me, when her sister sternly stopped her, “Shut up!”
I nodded and said, “Okay, I’m leaving…”
I walked into the house, and Uncle Yang anxiously said to An Xiaomin, “Minmin, you’ve gone too far…”
Uncle An stopped me, “Xingyan, you don’t need to leave. You and Yifan have been brothers since childhood. Just explain things clearly, won’t that be enough?”
He glanced at his eldest daughter and then said to me, “With me here, don’t worry.”
An Xiaomin suddenly shouted, “This is my house, no one can make decisions for me!”
This stunned everyone. I quickly packed my luggage, went to the living room, and said to the crowd gathered there, “I’m leaving.”
I bowed deeply and said to An Xiaomei, “See you at the airport tomorrow.”
Then I walked out. An Xiaomei called after me, “Brother Xingyan…”
“Meimei,” An Xiaomin stopped her.

39.
After I left, Uncle An sighed and sat down on the sofa. An Xiaomin said to everyone, "It's late, everyone should go back to your rooms."
After everyone dispersed, Uncle An, rubbing his forehead, choked back tears, "Sigh! Did your father-in-law and I do something wrong by so desperately wanting Xingyan to return to our family?"
An Xiaomin sat down and hugged her father, comforting him, "Dad, it's okay, it's okay... I was wrong to yell at you like that, but it was only for my mother-in-law's sake."
She comforted her father for a while, then helped him back to his room. Then they went to the terrace, where An Xiaomei was sitting. The night was getting late, and the lights on both banks of the Jialing River were dim in the distance.
An Xiaomei took her sister's arm and said, "Sister, maybe you've misunderstood Brother Xingyan."
"I haven't misunderstood him. Actually, I deliberately drove him away..."
An Xiaomin looked at her sister, her brows furrowed. "What woman wouldn't protect her husband? I had to do this so that the elders wouldn't see through my act."
She sighed again, "I'm sorry, Meimei, I had no other choice."
An Xiaomei said, "It's okay, sister, I understand."
She hesitated for a moment and asked, "Sister, tell me the truth, do you... still love Chen Xingyan?"
An Xiaomin asked, "Why do you say that?"
An Xiaomei looked at the Jialing River shrouded in night and said softly, "That day, you and he stayed out until very late. Did you... really just run into each other by chance?"
An Xiaomin looked at her sister for a while and said, "We really just ran into each other by chance..."
She then told An Xiaomei everything that day, the things between me, Li Jiaqi, and Sui Jinglei, and that I had Meniere's syndrome.
Under An Xiaomei's tearful gaze, An Xiaomin said through tears, "Meimei, I don't want to hide it from you, I do still love him now, but you have to believe me, no matter whether Yang Yifan and I divorce or not, it's impossible for us to be together, it's never going to be..."
As she spoke, tears streamed down her face, "So, please love him and take good care of him for me, okay?"
"Yes, yes..." An Xiaomei nodded through her tears.
Meanwhile, Uncle Yang and Aunt Jiang leaned against the headboard, sighing and complaining. Aunt Jiang asked, "Old man, tell me honestly, is Xingyan really An Weiguo's son?"
Uncle Yang lightly pounded his forehead and lamented, "Oh dear! Why are you like those gossipy women in the factory? It's been twenty or thirty years, and you're still harping on this issue? I've told you eight hundred times, Xingyan is Chen Ping's son, he's no one else's child."
Aunt Jiang muttered resentfully, "Then why are you two so protective of him? Weiguo even divorced Dongzi's mother because of him, and you beat your own son for his sake..."
She suddenly pointed at her husband and exclaimed, "Oh my! If Xingyan isn't Weiguo's child, then is he yours? Xingyan is actually Yifan's younger brother?" Uncle
Yang was so angry he didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and said sternly, "Jiang Xiu, if you keep talking nonsense like this, I... " "His mother will divorce you, believe it or not?"
Aunt Jiang had no choice but to shut up. After a while, she said again, "This An Weiguo is too protective of Xingyan, even better than his own son-in-law. Tonight's incident clearly shows he's biased towards Xingyan."
Uncle Yang sighed, "After all, Xingyan has been away from home for over twenty years!"
He paused for a moment and said, "Actually, back then, Weiguo preferred Xingyan, not our son."
Aunt Jiang pursed her lips, "Do you need to tell me that? I saw it a long time ago. Do you remember? Back then, Xingyan had been gone for so many years, and when you proposed to Weiguo, he used Minmin's studies as an excuse to refuse. Wasn't he thinking that Xingyan would come back one day and marry his daughter?"
Uncle Yang said, "So, the rumors spread by you gossipy women are completely unfounded. If Xingyan were really Weiguo's son, would he act like this? Who in the world would try to matchmake their own son and daughter?"
"I just can't accept it..." Aunt Jiang pouted. "What does our son lack compared to Chen Xingyan? Why is An Weiguo showing favoritism? Take Yifan for example, isn't he infinitely better than Chen Xingyan in every way? An Weiguo should be secretly happy!"
"Stop being so jealous..." Uncle Yang said. "No matter what, Minmin is your daughter-in-law after all, isn't she? She calls you Mom! And she gave us a big, healthy grandson who's already a teenager. And all these years, how has Minmin treated you and me? Do you have anything to say about it?"
Aunt Jiang said, "Yes! Minmin is indeed a daughter-in-law that's hard to find even with a lantern. She's outstanding in appearance and career, and very virtuous. Although she's a bit strong-willed and always puts our son in a superior position, she's impeccable towards Yifan and us both..."
“That’s right…” Uncle Yang chuckled to his wife, “Why bother bringing up these old grudges with that old man?”
The couple was silent for a moment, then Aunt Jiang sighed, “Sigh! Dongzi’s mother is really something else. Back then, she always argued with Weiguo because of Xingyan, but no matter how much they argued, they never divorced…”
“You have the nerve to say that?” Uncle Yang interrupted his wife, “Why did they argue? Wasn’t it because you wouldn’t let Xingyan stay in our house and insisted on putting him in theirs? They already had three children, and with Xingyan, that would be four. Zhuang Huijuan wasn’t a permanent employee, so her salary was low. How could she not argue with Weiguo?”
“Stop interrupting, that’s not the point I wanted to make…”
Aunt Jiang said, “Xingyan left on his own, and she ran off with another man, neglecting her own child, but she had a daughter with that man, and Dongzi still doesn’t recognize her. Later, she divorced that man and raised the child alone. What was she thinking? She made herself like this… Sigh!”
She sighed heavily as she spoke, "If she hadn't left back then, if she had gritted her teeth and persevered, her three children would be so successful now, wouldn't she be able to enjoy a comfortable retirement? She wouldn't be stuck in a small place like Dazhou, struggling to make ends meet, doing odd jobs at her age. That's what you call 'no zuo no die'!"
Uncle Yang said irritably, "Alright, mind your own business, turn off the lights and go to sleep."
I stood under the eaves of a closed newsstand on the roadside outside the community gate, sheltering from the rain.
It had started pouring rain before I even left the community, so I had to come here for shelter. I'd find a hotel nearby once the rain stopped or lessened.
At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of desolation. I had lived in Chongqing for over ten years. When I divorced Sui Jinglei, I gave her the house. Now, back here, I had nowhere to live.
It was the same in Guangzhou; if I weren't staying with An Xiaomei, I would have to rent a place. As for my hometown, Wanzhou, I haven't been back for over twenty years. The bungalow the factory allocated to my parents back then has probably been razed to the ground during demolition.
In middle age, yet homeless and without a place to call home, a wave of sadness washed over me, reminiscent of Su Shi's lines, "Nowhere to speak of my desolation." Just then
, An Xiaomei texted me, asking where I was and if I'd gotten caught in the rain. To avoid worrying her, I told her I was staying at a nearby hotel. She added that her sister was deliberately putting on a show for the three elders—first, to avoid revealing her broken relationship with Yang Yifan, and second, to appease Aunt Jiang.
I replied that I'd guessed, and wasn't angry, and reminded An Xiaomei not to miss her flight tomorrow.
On An Xiaomin's balcony, An Xiaomin asked her sister, "How is he? Has he settled in?"
"Yes, he's settled in, at a hotel nearby," An Xiaomei nodded.
An Xiaomin sighed, "Xingyan has encountered too many hardships in his life. At this age, he still has no roof over his head and no land to live on..."
She thought for a moment and looked at her sister, "How about the two of us sisters chip in to buy him a house in Guangzhou?"
An Xiaomin's income was quite high. As a university professor and doctoral supervisor, her salary and income from scientific research were already very high. She also held shares in Yang Yifan Real Estate Company and received a considerable amount of dividends every year. It can be said that her economic strength far exceeded that of An Xiaomei.
“He won’t accept it, sister…” An Xiaomei frowned and said, “He has a very strong sense of pride. Ever since we moved in together, he’s taken care of all our daily needs and never asked me for a penny. He said that living in such a nice house without paying a single penny in rent already makes him feel like he’s living off me, so how could he possibly ask me for living expenses?”
The two sisters sighed for a moment, and An Xiaomin said, “Aren’t you on a flight tomorrow afternoon? Ask him to come back for lunch.”
“Let’s forget it. Things have already gotten so messy tonight…” An Xiaomei said with some difficulty.
“That’s why we asked him to come over tomorrow!” An Xiaomin laughed.

40.
The rain was still falling. A young woman in her early twenties ran over in the rain, carrying a backpack on her shoulder and dragging a suitcase in her hand, and ran to the eaves of the newsstand.
She was very pretty, tall, probably over 1.7 meters, wearing a tight-fitting short-sleeved t-shirt and denim shorts, revealing her long legs.
I couldn't help but admire her inwardly, "So beautiful! And a great figure too."
Because she was soaked, her tight-fitting short-sleeved t-shirt was practically transparent, clearly revealing her skin and bra, making her look quite sexy.
Her denim shorts were incredibly short, barely covering her thighs and her buttocks.
I was squatting down, and through the gap at the bottom of her shorts, I could see her pink panties and part of her buttocks sticking out, which made my heart flutter.
"Wow!" the girl exclaimed, wiping the rain from her face and looking at me.
I quickly looked away, glancing at the splashing rain on the street, and stood up. The girl also looked away; she probably realized she had just exposed herself and pulled her shorts down a little.
After a while, she took out a bottle of mineral water from her backpack, took a sip, put it back, and then took out another unopened bottle of mineral water, handing it to me and saying, "Uncle, would you like some water?"
I shook my head and smiled, "No, thank you!"
"You're welcome," the girl said, putting the bottle of mineral water back into her backpack.
I thought to myself, this girl is not only pretty, but also quite warm and generous, and asked, "Young lady, did you just come from out of town?"
"Yes! Just got off the high-speed train," the girl smiled.
"It's so late, why didn't you take a taxi?"
"Taxi is too expensive! I came by subway, but I didn't expect to encounter heavy rain when I got off the subway station."
The girl chatted with me cheerfully. She glanced at my suitcase and asked, "Uncle, are you going out or going home?"
"I..." I didn't know how to answer her for a moment, and gave a wry smile.
She pointed at me and laughed, "Oh! I see, you had a fight with your wife and got kicked out of your house, right?"
I couldn't help but laugh. The girl laughed again, "Just kidding!"
In that instant, I felt the gloom in my heart dissipate thanks to this complete stranger. I asked with a smile, "Do you live here?"
"No, I'm from out of town. My sister lives here, and I'm going to her house," the girl said.
That rainy night, I chatted with this beautiful stranger, as if we were old friends. The girl extended her right hand to me and said generously, "We both came here to take shelter from the rain, so we're kind of fellow sufferers. Let's get to know each other?"
I took her hand, and the line from the Book of Songs came to mind—"Hands like tender shoots, skin like congealed cream." I thought, this hand must be what the ancients meant by tender shoots.
“My name is Zhuang Youting. Zhuang from Zhuangzi, You from Youxiao, and Ting from Tingting Yuli.”
I thought to myself, what a beautiful name, truly living up to her name. “My name is Chen Yu. Chen from Erdong, and Yu from Rongyu.”
“Uncle Chen, you’re an artist, right?” Zhuang Youting looked at me and smiled.
“How did you know?” I asked with interest.
Zhuang Youting seemed thoughtful and said, “Just a feeling! I felt you had an artist’s air about you.”
I laughed, “Actually, I’m unemployed.”
She scoffed, quite unconvinced, “Who are you kidding! I don’t believe you.”
I noticed she was almost as tall as me, so I asked her how tall she was. She proudly said, “1.73 meters.” I thought that was tall enough, only two centimeters shorter than me.
At this moment, the rain lessened, and Zhuang Youting picked up her suitcase, said goodbye to me, “Uncle Chen, I’m leaving now, see you again sometime.”
With that, she strode into the rain. Watching her disappearing figure through the gate of the residential complex, I silently wished this warm and cheerful pretty girl well, "Little sister, I wish you all the best."
Then, I picked up my suitcase and headed towards the nearby hotel.
The An sisters were still talking on the terrace when Zhuang Youting came out of the living room onto the terrace.
"Sister, you're still awake? Are Uncle and Uncle Yang asleep?" she asked An Xiaomin.
"Tingting, weren't you supposed to be back tomorrow? Why are you back now?" An Xiaomin smiled broadly as soon as she saw Zhuang Youting and walked towards her.
This girl was the child Aunt Zhuang had with another man in Dazhou after divorcing Uncle An. Three months ago, she finished vocational school in her hometown and came to Chongqing to find a job. She returned home for a few days during the National Day holiday.
Zhuang Youting smiled and said, "Mom went to the countryside today and bought some fresh wild mushrooms. I thought I'd let you try them, so I came back early."
From childhood to adulthood, she had visited her older brother and sister a few times in Wanzhou with her mother. Over the years, Uncle An and Aunt Zhuang had kept in touch. When Uncle An heard that Zhuang Youting was coming to Chongqing to find a job after graduation, he asked his eldest daughter to take good care of her younger sister.
So, when Zhuang Youting was in Chongqing, she always stayed at An Xiaomin's house. With the access code, she could come and go as if it were her own home.
"Then why didn't you tell me to pick you up at the station? You're all soaked. All these bags and packages, Mom must have brought a lot of things again, right?" An Xiaomin said.
“Yes!” Zhuang Youting smiled helplessly. “I’ve told her so many times that Chongqing has everything, and my family doesn’t lack anything either, but she always insists I bring a lot.”
An Xiaomin smiled and said, “It’s alright, it’s just Mom’s way of showing her love! By the way, have you eaten? I’ll make you something.”
“No need, sister, I ate on the high-speed train, I’m not hungry.”
Zhuang Youting said, then smiled at An Xiaomei, “You must be Sister Meimei? Long time no see, you’re so beautiful!”
The last time she met An Xiaomei was many years ago, and she barely recognized her now.
“Thank you, you’re beautiful too.” An Xiaomei smiled calmly and said, “You two chat, I’m going to sleep.”
She hadn’t seen this younger sister much since childhood and didn’t feel close to her. After hearing about An Xiaomin taking care of Zhuang Youting recently, she was quite disapproving of her sister’s actions.
An Xiaomin pulled her younger sister back. "It's not easy for the three of us sisters to get together, let's chat a little longer, shall we?"
"I'm sleepy, you two chat, I'm going back to my room," An Xiaomei said expressionlessly.
An Xiaomin knew that she held a grudge against the little girl because of what happened to their mother back then, so she didn't want to force her and reluctantly let go of her hand.
Zhuang Youting quickly said, "Sister Meimei, Mom brought you some high-quality soybeans from our area, they're so good! She told you to make soy milk for breakfast, saying you're a very busy person, but you should still eat breakfast properly no matter how busy you are."
An Xiaomei smiled slightly, "Give it to me, I don't like soy milk."
She said, walking away from the two sisters. Zhuang Youting looked at her older sister somewhat awkwardly, and An Xiaomin patted her arm and laughed, "Don't mind her, give it to me, I like soy milk."
Zhuang Youting smiled sweetly. An Xiaomin said again, "Go back to your room first, I'll come find you in a bit."

41.
In An Xiaomei's room, An Xiaomin walked in and sat on the edge of the bed, smiling at her sister who was leaning against the headboard, "What are you doing? Mom offended you, but that little girl didn't offend you, why are you giving her such a sour face?"
An Xiaomei retorted, "I didn't give her a sour face, I was just not enthusiastic enough."
She muttered again, "Who's like you? Always playing the saint, even I, the real brother, don't acknowledge this relationship, but you're rushing to treat that girl like your own sister..."
An Xiaomin gently patted her sister's cheek and laughed, "Don't bring Dongzi into this, I am playing the saint, so what? She's still Mom's biological daughter, she's also our sister."
"What do you mean 'our sister'?" An Xiaomei said disdainfully. "Is she related to you or me by blood? How can she be our sister?"
An Xiaomin said patiently, "No matter how bad Mom was back then, she took care of us for so many years, right? Since she's Mom's daughter, she's our sister. You can't deny it."
An Xiaomei said, "But you don't have to be so enthusiastic, do you? You actually let her live at home, and you keep calling her Tingting so affectionately."
An Xiaomin laughed, "Are you jealous? You're allowed to call her Meimei, but not Tingting? She's only twenty-one years old, and you're so much older than her. Can't you be a little more considerate?"
She paused and said, "Actually, letting her live at home was Dad's idea. Dad has already done this much, what else can you say?"
"Dad is really something. That woman did something to wrong him, and he still repays evil with kindness. He's such a pushover." An Xiaomei didn't understand her father's behavior at all.
An Xiaomin sighed, "Dad just felt sorry for them, mother and daughter, and thought that now that we're better off, we should help them if we can. After all, we were husband and wife, and we were mother and daughter."
"You and Dad are such good people, okay?" An Xiaomei said, "But have you considered brother's feelings?"
An Xiaomin frowned slightly and said quietly, "Yes! When Mom left, Xiaodong was only fourteen, an age when he needed maternal love. He was also going through puberty, quite rebellious and sensitive. This incident left a deep shadow on him."
An Xiaomei said indignantly, "Sister, what was Mom thinking back then? It's one thing for you and me, since we're not her biological children, but what about brother? He's a piece of her flesh that she carried for ten months. How could she bear to part with him?"
Hearing her sister's words, An Xiaomin couldn't help but... De frowned and said, "I think she probably never loved our father, never ever. She married him only because she came from the countryside, and he was a state-owned enterprise employee, someone she could rely on, nothing more. But later, our family's burdens became too heavy, which annoyed her, and coupled with that man's seduction, she abandoned her husband and children to run off with him."
The two sisters sighed for a moment, and An Xiaomin said, "Alright, you go to sleep early. I'll go check on that girl."
Reaching Zhuang Youting's room, An Xiaomin knocked and said, "Tingting, can I come in?"
"Sister, I'm taking a bath, the door's unlocked, you can come in," Zhuang Youting said from inside.
An Xiaomin pushed open the door and went straight into the bathroom. She saw Zhuang Youting soaking in the bathtub and smiled, "Taking a bath!"
She sat on the edge of the tub, gently stroking her sister's face, and said softly, "Don't worry about your sister Meimei. That's just how she is. She's used to being a strong woman in the workplace, so it's inevitable that she brings some of her subordinate-like attitude home. She's really fine."
Zhuang Youting smiled sweetly at her sister, "No, sister, I won't worry about Meimei."
"That's good..." An Xiaomin smiled and pinched her sister's cheek. "It's getting late, go to sleep early."
She was about to get up to leave when Zhuang Youting grabbed her hand. "Sister..."
"What's wrong?" An Xiaomin asked.
Zhuang Youting looked at her and said, "Thank you!"
An Xiaomin smiled gently, "Why are you so polite?"
Zhuang Youting lowered her head and said, "I know that in this family, you're the best to me. Brother Xiaodong dislikes me, and Sister Meimei doesn't like me either, but you still let me live here and treat me like your own sister..." As
she spoke, tears streamed down her face. An Xiaomin wiped away her tears, her eyes filled with tenderness, and smiled, "Am I the only one who's good to you? Isn't your uncle good to you? What about your brother-in-law? Isn't he good to you too?"
For some reason, every time An Xiaomin saw this girl, she couldn't help but feel affection and even doting towards her, as if she were her own daughter. She thought, perhaps it was because this girl came from a poor background, yet was so beautiful, that she felt pity for her?
Zhuang Youting raised her head, nodded, and smiled, "Yes, they're very good to me too. My current job was introduced by my brother-in-law!"
"That's good then," An Xiaomin smiled, "Give your brother some more time, and he'll accept you."
"Hmm! Hehe..." Zhuang Youting nodded a few more times and said, "By the way, sister, Mom not only bought fresh mushrooms today, but also killed one of our own free-range chickens. Shall I cook a meal for you tomorrow?"
"No need for you to cook, I'll do it."
"Sister, just let me cook!" Zhuang Youting grabbed her sister's hand and said coquettishly.
"Okay, okay, you cook..." An Xiaomin smiled, "It just so happens that your sister Xiaomei is going back to Guangzhou tomorrow afternoon, so consider it a farewell dinner for her."
Returning to the master bedroom, An Xiaomin saw that the sofa was empty, and Yang Yifan was fast asleep on the bed.
She sighed inwardly, took out her bedding from the closet, made the bed, and lay down.
So many things had happened in the past few days, making her heart turbulent and unable to fall asleep. Just as she was about to fall asleep, she vaguely realized that someone was on top of her, kissing and touching her.
"What are you doing?" An Xiaomin shouted in shock and anger, pushing away the person on top of her.
Yang Yifan remained unchanged, murmuring, "Baby, we haven't done this in so long, I want you so much, give it to me, I want you..."
"No!" An Xiaomin forcefully pushed her husband away.
Yang Yifan said urgently, "Baby, today you even kicked Chen Xingyan out for my sake, which means you still care about me, you still cherish our marriage, right?"
An Xiaomin sneered, "Don't you really know why I did this?"
"Why? Isn't it for me, for our family!" Yang Yifan said, and then hugged An Xiaomin again.
An Xiaomin pushed him away, whispering, "I did that for your parents..."
She stared coldly at him, "and also for my father. I put on a show to protect my husband in front of them."
Yang Yifan stared at his wife for a long time, then said coldly, "You'd do anything for that Chen Xingyan!"
An Xiaomin also said coldly, "You've hated Xingyan since you were little. You'd do anything to hurt him, to get revenge on him, wouldn't you?"
"What do you mean?"
An Xiaomin sneered, "Why did Chen Xingyan lose control tonight and hit you? Do you think I can't guess? Wasn't it because you said some really nasty things, deliberately provoking him, putting on a show of suffering in front of our parents, so that he could never come back to this family? Am I right?"
Yang Yifan said fiercely, "An Xiaomin, don't forget, I'm your husband, not Chen Xingyan. How dare you slander your own husband to protect another man?"
"Whether I made it up or not, you know it in your heart,"
An Xiaomin said coldly, pushing Yang Yifan away and standing up to walk towards the door. "You go to sleep! I'll go to another room."
Unexpectedly, Yang Yifan grabbed her and pushed her back onto the sofa. She cried out in surprise, but dared not make a loud sound lest the family hear, "What are you doing? Let me go..."
"You're my wife, I can do whatever I want..." Yang Yifan said, forcibly kissing An Xiaomin while undressing her.
Suddenly, he cried out "Ah!" and rolled off the sofa, clutching his bitten shoulder, filled with shock and anger, "Are you fucking crazy?"
An Xiaomin didn't speak, only staring coldly at her husband. Yang Yifan was enraged and lost his temper, slapping An Xiaomin across the face, then pushing her back onto the sofa, straddling her and slapping her head several times.
An Xiaomin could only cover her head with her hands, tears streaming down her face. Yang Yifan hit and cursed, "You bitch, do you think I've been lenient with you because I'm afraid of you? I was only doing it out of respect..."
After he finished hitting her, he stood up, pointed at An Xiaomin curled up on the sofa, and said through gritted teeth, "You want a divorce? Fine, I promise you, as soon as I divorce you, a woman much younger and prettier than you will be in my bed in no time, you believe me?"
After saying that, he changed his clothes, slammed the door, and left. An Xiaomin didn't know where Yang Yifan was going. But she knew very well that he was either going to that woman's place or going to gamble. However, at this moment, she couldn't care less about any of that, and didn't want to care anymore.
She cried silently for a long time, and then sent me three words on WeChat, "Where are you?"
