Judging a man's health by the smell of semen

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-04-05
Men and women with sexual experience will notice the strong, distinctive odor of male semen. Some find this odor repulsive, describing it as extremely unpleasant; others find it pleasant, even arousing. These two contrasting feelings are closely related to physiological and psychological factors such as the level of libido, the depth of sexual intimacy, and attitudes towards sex. Scientists are interested in the origin of this odor and its significance. Semen,

like saliva, gastrointestinal fluids, and blood, is a bodily fluid, but its odor is the most pronounced. Semen is not as simple as other bodily fluids; it is a mixture. Besides sperm, seminal plasma consists of prostatic fluid, epididymal fluid, seminal vesicle fluid, and various secretions from the urethra and vas deferens.

The normal odor of semen is emitted after the oxidation of a chemical substance called spermine, which smells similar to chestnut blossoms. Spermine is one of the many important components of prostatic secretions. The oxidation of spermine requires the participation of seminal vesicle fluid. Prostatic fluid obtained through rectal massage generally does not possess the odor of naturally ejaculated semen.

Therefore, the odor of normal ejaculated semen originates from the prostate gland, but is only released with the participation of seminal vesicle fluid. The lack of this distinctive odor in semen often indicates impaired prostate function; many men with prostate problems often cannot detect this odor in their semen.

As for the physiological significance of this distinctive semen odor, it is speculated that it may be related to libido and sexual behavior. In lower animals, information regarding sexual activity and selection is primarily conveyed through odor; many mammals emit a specific odor during estrus to attract mates.
